The 2019 Nissan Altima midsize family sedan will be revealed soon at the New York Auto Show. We’ve seen it in spy shots, and we’ve seen an early sketch, and now we know one of the features that will be available. The new Altima will have ProPilot Assist as an option.

In case you haven’t heard of ProPilot Assist or just forgot about it, the feature is a semi-autonomous driving system that provides steering, acceleration and braking assistance on highways. It can bring the car to a complete stop and resume accelerating up to speed, it recognizes other cars and adjusts speed, and it keeps the car in its lane. It does require the driver to continue paying attention and to keep hands on the steering wheel. Also, while it can handle some corners on highways, there are limits to how tight a corner it can manage.

The feature is currently available on the Nissan Roguecrossover SUV and the new Leaf EV. This will make the Altima the third Nissan-badged vehicle to get the technology. Our experience has been that even with ProPilot’s limitations, the feature works simply and reliably and is handy for long, boring highway journeys. So it should be a tempting feature on the new family sedan.

A road trip with Nissan ProPilot Assist https://briefnews.eu/a-road-trip-with-nissan-propilot-assist/ https://briefnews.eu/a-road-trip-with-nissan-propilot-assist/#respond Thu, 15 Feb 2018 01:10:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-road-trip-with-nissan-propilot-assist/

By Joel Stocksdale

We’ve had a bit of experience with the Nissan ProPilot Assist system here at Autoblog. I was the first to try it out with a Rogue prototype during a press test drive, and we later got one to test for the 2018 Tech of the Year award. In each instance it managed to impress us with its ease of use and general effectiveness. It did so enough to merit a spot as a Tech of the Year finalist.

However, every experience we had with the technology was fairly brief, with only short highway jaunts to demonstrate how it works. Long highway jaunts is really what ProPilot is meant for, so to find out just how helpful it is, I drove a 2018 Rogue equipped with its new ProPilot Assist option to the Chicago Auto Show.

Overall, ProPilot Assist really is a boon for long-haul drives. It all comes down to how it takes care of the minute corrections and adjustments that have to be made on highways. There are always some imperfections, wind, changing road markings or minuscule curves that demand input from the driver to stay centered and on-course. They don’t seem like they would be that taxing, but over the course of three, four, even five hours, to say nothing of the 13-hour journeys I did in college, it adds up fast.

ProPilot Assist handles all that for you, keeping the car centered, even through mild highway curves. It became so effective on straight sections that I relaxed my hand to the point the steering wheel no longer detected my presence and the car warned me to put my hand back on the wheel. And yes, like other adaptive cruise control systems with steering assist, ProPilot Assist does make you commit to this token gesture of control.

For good reason, too. There are times that the system starts to get a little too close to one side or the other. And of course, there are some turns in which the car doesn’t turn enough to stay in the lane and needs additional driver input. This is why you’re required to keep a hand on the wheel, and why you have to still pay attention. Yet, keeping a guiding hand in place for minor corrections is less tiring than doing the job entirely yourself. As I discovered, I arrived in Chicago feeling more relaxed, less tired, and generally comfortable than I would’ve expected in a regular do-it-yourself car.

The other thing that’s great about ProPilot is that it’s still so easy to use. Provided that you have the steering assist setting on, it comes on when setting the cruise control. It starts handling the steering as soon as it recognizes the lane markings, which only takes a few seconds. When you want it to stop, just switch off your cruise control. And if you want just cruise control without ProPilot steering assist, simply press the button on the dash with a little steering wheel icon.

One caveat regarding ProPilot is that although it’s a great feature that works well, the 2018 Rogue it’s attached to is not the strongest crossover SUV. It has a comfortable ride and plenty of space, but when I was actually operating the steering, I found it dead and oddly weighted. The engine is also fairly coarse and the handling is lackluster. Yet, if I was staring down constant long trips or daily stop-and-go gridlock, it might be easy to forgive those shortcomings for ProPilot Assist.

From the Silver Screen to the Highway: We Try Out Nissan’s New ProPilot Assist and e-Pedal Driver-Assist Technologies https://briefnews.eu/from-the-silver-screen-to-the-highway-we-try-out-nissans-new-propilot-assist-and-e-pedal-driver-assist-technologies/ https://briefnews.eu/from-the-silver-screen-to-the-highway-we-try-out-nissans-new-propilot-assist-and-e-pedal-driver-assist-technologies/#respond Thu, 21 Dec 2017 14:17:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/from-the-silver-screen-to-the-highway-we-try-out-nissans-new-propilot-assist-and-e-pedal-driver-assist-technologies/ NissanLEAF30

Interstellar transport, force fields, and carbonite freezing are just a few of the wild and futuristic technologies that drive the story line in the Star Wars works of fiction. Here on planet Earth, when Nissan isn’t working up tie-ins to that fictional universe, it’s busy working on solutions to real-world transportation problems.

–

The company’s Leaf electric car, all new for 2018, features two such pieces of tech. Neither is new to the industry, but both are new to Nissan. The e-Pedal feature is simply Nissan’s name for substantially increasing the amount of regenerative braking that happens when the driver lifts off the throttle, while ProPilot Assist is a radar- and camera-based driving aid that is available on the 2018 Nissan Rogue SUV.

–

Like the Leaf’s main rivals, the Chevrolet Bolt EV and the Hyundai Ioniq EV, this braking using the electric motor allows energy to be recaptured into the battery when the vehicle is coasting or slowing to a stop. The new e-Pedal feature allows Leaf drivers the luxury of avoiding the brake pedal as lifting off the throttle pedal alone results in strong deceleration. Nissan estimates this feature—when activated by a console-mounted switch—should allow for one-pedal driving for 90 percent of an average trip. The feature also will hold the vehicle at a stop even on a steep grade.

In practice, the system works quite well, and it doesn’t require the use of steering-wheel paddles or the selection of a specific mode as do rivals from Chevrolet and Hyundai. On a recent drive around downtown Los Angeles, we noted smooth transitions between acceleration and deceleration despite the system’s aggressive energy-regeneration mission. Driving with just one pedal does take some acclimation, but the learning curve seems low. For those who are interested in driving range—and we’d wager that includes almost all Leaf buyers—the e-Pedal is a welcome component, making Nissan’s decision to turn the feature on manually at each ignition cycle seem questionable.

–

Nissan’s new ProPilot Assist system is another feature that works impressively well. We were offered a chance to try this out during the same drive in and around Hollywood in both a new Leaf and a Rogue SUV. Using a centrally mounted radar module and a single camera behind the windshield, the system elevates the vehicle’s adaptive cruise control feature to new heights, allowing for automatic lane centering and accelerating and braking in response to the vehicle ahead.

–

Nissan likens its ProPilot Assist system to that of Star Wars characters R2-D2 and BB-8, droids who assist pilots such as Luke Skywalker and Poe Dameron. And indeed, the system does facilitate safer driving while reducing driver fatigue. On both the Leaf and the Rogue, the sole camera finds lane markers and communicates with the active steering to center the vehicle in the lane—something other rivals such as the Tesla Model S require more sensors to accomplish. When activated, the steering wheel has added heft to provide feedback to the driver that it’s in control, but the technology is easily overcome in the event the driver needs to make an emergency maneuver. Nissan’s goal is to minimize said events, however, and the radar—housed behind the large Nissan logo on the front of the vehicle—senses objects and other vehicles traveling ahead and can maintain a set following distance and apply brakes in the event of an emergency.

–

ProPILOT Assist, available on the 2018 Rogue SL with the Platinum Package, reduces the hassle of stop-and-go driving by helping control acceleration, braking and steering during single-lane highway driving.

–

It turns out that Los Angeles traffic is an ideal place to sample ProPilot Assist. The regular stop-and-go highway traffic there provided many opportunities to allow the system to showcase its competence. Unlike the Leaf’s e-Pedal, ProPilot Assist requires more getting used to; the first few times it’s left to steer, accelerate, and brake in heavy traffic are downright cringe-worthy. Once you’ve learned to trust the system and are more comfortable, its potential for reducing accidents and alleviating stress-induced road-rage incidents comes into focus.

–

The system isn’t a full-on autonomous driving system, though, as the driver is required to remain focused with his or her hands on the steering wheel. If the driver’s hands are off the wheel for too long, ProPilot will sound a loud alarm, activate the hazard flashers, and slow itself to a stop. Nissan has really gone all in on the “pilot” theme by mimicking an airplane’s Ground Proximity Warning System with the beep strategy (see video below)—in the event the driver does not respond to more subtle warnings that it’s time for the human to take control.

–

–

The e-Pedal is offered as standard across the entirety of the 2018 Leaf lineup, which starts at $ 30,875 before federal and local tax incentives. ProPilot Assist is offered as an option as part of the Technology package ($ 2200 on SV and $ 650 on SL trims). ProPilot Assist comes only on the Rogue SL when equipped with both the $ 1820 SL Premium package and the $ 790 SL Platinum package.

Nissan announces pricing for 2018 Rogue, which gets ProPilot Assist option https://briefnews.eu/nissan-announces-pricing-for-2018-rogue-which-gets-propilot-assist-option/ https://briefnews.eu/nissan-announces-pricing-for-2018-rogue-which-gets-propilot-assist-option/#respond Tue, 17 Oct 2017 18:32:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nissan-announces-pricing-for-2018-rogue-which-gets-propilot-assist-option/

Nissan’s Rogue crossover utility vehicle will come with the option of its ProPilot Assist driver-assistance and other technology perks for the 2018 model year when it goes on sale later this month starting just under $ 25,000. The Rogue is Nissan’s top-selling vehicle for the 2017 model year.

ProPilot Assist is Nissan‘s foundation for future fully autonomous vehicles, providing assisted steering, braking and accelerating during single-lane highway driving, all with a two-button operation. It will come with the 2018 Rogue’s SL grade as part of the Platinum Package. Coming standard on all versions is NissanConnect integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus navigation services, via a 7-inch color touch-screen display. Also available are moving-object detection technology, radar-based blind spot warning, lane departure warning and standard automatic emergency braking.

The company is upgrading its Midnight Edition Package, introduced earlier this year, with a black V-motion grille and black front and rear fascias, plus additional “blackout” features available later. It’s offered on the SV grade in Magnetic Black, Gun Metallic and Pearl White exterior colors.

Inside, the 2018 Rogue gets the EZ Flex seating system and Divide-N-Hide cargo system for storage, plus optional premium tan leather seats with special quilted leather inserts.

The Rogue will come with standard front-wheel-drive or optional all-wheel-drive configurations. All models get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 170 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque, the same as in previous models. It’s matched with Nissan’s Xtronic transmission in a standard Sport Mode and Eco switches. Fuel economy maxes out at a projected 26 mpg city, 33 mpg highway and 29 mpg combined for the front-wheel-drive versions, and slightly lower for AWD.

Nissan last redesigned the Rogue for 2014 with three rows. The 2018 model goes on sale Oct. 24.

Nissan’s ProPilot Assist definitely isn’t an autopilot, but is still quite useful https://briefnews.eu/nissans-propilot-assist-definitely-isnt-an-autopilot-but-is-still-quite-useful/ https://briefnews.eu/nissans-propilot-assist-definitely-isnt-an-autopilot-but-is-still-quite-useful/#respond Fri, 21 Jul 2017 07:48:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nissans-propilot-assist-definitely-isnt-an-autopilot-but-is-still-quite-useful/ When the next-generation Nissan Leaf is launched in the near future, it will feature Nissan’s ProPilot semi-autonomous technology. The system was already available in Japan on the Serena minivan, but the Leaf will be the first Nissan in America to feature it. Fortunately, we didn’t have to wait for the launch of the Leaf to try it, since Nissan fitted the system to some Roguecrossovers for the press to experience (Nissan’s representatives did say that it has no plans to offer it on the Rogue, yet, though the implementation here seemed close to production ready).

How does it work?

Nissan’s ProPilot Assist is classified as an SAE Level 2 semi-autonomous driving feature. What this means is that it offers only partial automation, and the driver still has to maintain attention and engagement with the task of driving. Nissan emphasized this, too, saying that this is not something where you can take your hands off the wheel. However, what automation it does have is fairly comprehensive. While remaining in one lane, the car will manage the steering to keep the car in the center. The adaptive cruise control can bring the car to a full stop, and then resume acceleration when the vehicle in front of it begins moving again. This automated steering relies on a single camera, which on our test Rogue was mounted in the windshield ahead of the rear view mirror. The adaptive cruise control uses radar sensors behind the front fascia.

Operating the system is extremely easy. It hardly takes any more input than setting cruise control. In fact, turning on the cruise control is the first step. After that, the driver presses the Nissan “Safety Shield” button, which has an icon of a car surrounded by radiating circles. On the instrument panel screen, this will bring up grayed-out icons of a steering wheel in the upper left corner and lane markers on either side of the car icon. Then you set your cruise control speed, and within a second or two, the camera will recognize the lane markers and provide steering assistance. Turn on cruise, turn on Safety Shield, set cruise, and you’re done. If you need to change lanes, switching on the turn signal and turning will temporarily disable the steering assist, but once you’ve changed lanes, it will automatically turn back on once it finds the lane marks again. Hitting the brakes will also shut all aspects of assistance and cruise control.

What’s it like?

First off, it really is as easy to activate as described above. It’s no more complicated than any other adaptive cruise control on the market. And the automatic resumption following a lane-change makes it a breeze to use even when traffic is flowing and you need to move around other vehicles. And if you ever switch it off manually or by hitting the brakes, you simply hit the resume button for cruise, and the whole system comes on again.

Nissan ProPilot Assist

The steering can handle fairly aggressive interstate corners, too. The test loop was a section of I-696 in Michigan between the Nissan technology center in Farmington Hills and Woodward Avenue in Royal Oak, and almost every tight turn was navigated without additional input from the driver, and at speeds of right around 70 miles per hour. The ability for the car to slow to a stop worked very well, bringing the car to a halt smoothly and safely, and holding it at stops. It also accelerated up from a stop smoothly, and, unless traffic was moving more briskly than usual, generally kept up.

These abilities mean that ProPilot Assist should be a serious boon for people dealing with gridlocked traffic, or making long jaunts across the country on interstates. I personally would have appreciated this feature in college on my long drives between Indiana and Kansas. Thirteen hours of endlessly straight interstate can wear you out, and having this assist would’ve really helped with fatigue. And in traffic jams, just the thought of not having to gently feather the accelerator and jump between it and the brake should bring relief to ankles nationwide.

It does of course have limits, and these limits are why drivers still have to pay attention and intervene at times. While we were testing on the inside lane of one of the highway curves, the car started drifting outward, and went far enough that the lane departure warning triggered and I had to add some steering input. This is not a fully autonomous system. Nissan’s representatives warned us that the adaptive cruise control can’t overcome some speed differentials (i.e. going from highway speed to a stop in a short period of time). So if traffic comes to a slow or a stop very quickly, the driver may have to provide stopping power manually. Additionally, while the automated steering generally does a good job of keeping the car centered, there were a number of times that it drifted farther to either side than I would go driving in full manual.

Is it worth it?

This all depends on your driving situation and what’s important to you in a car. If you’re dealing with lots of slow-moving and stop-and-go traffic, or really long interstate commutes, Nissan’s ProPilot semi-autonomous technology is definitely worth your consideration. It would be extremely useful for those conditions. If not, this feature likely won’t make a big difference in your daily driving. As useful as it can be, it still shouldn’t be the only thing that drives your car purchase. If you decide you don’t like whatever Nissan the feature is fitted to, you shouldn’t get that car, because this feature won’t outweigh the parts you dislike. So it’s a cool technology for those who find it useful, but not necessarily a deal-maker.
