One will hurry over, smiling, and hand you a flyer with a map of directions to the spot every lost-looking tourist walking past the gates is likely looking for: the Shanghai Propaganda Poster Art Centre.

But it’s worth the search expedition. Because one of the best things about Shanghai is not the Bund, Pearl Tower or Nanjing Road, but this museum tucked away in the basement of an unassuming building, spread out over three modest rooms filled with what is possibly the largest collection of Chinese propaganda posters anywhere in the world. Dating as far back as 1949, the 6,000-odd posters are a fascinating glimpse into 20th century China.

It started as a hobby for the museum’s founder, Yang Pei Ming, who began collecting the posters in the ’80s when China was in the early stages of opening up to the world. Posters that had long graced the walls of government organizations, museums, libraries and cultural centers were being discarded. Yang found the bulk of his posters around Shanghai, where the majority of them had originally been printed. “No other country has produced so many and such beautiful propaganda posters as China did,” Yang explains.

This extended glimpse into China’s past also lays bare the murkier side of history.

The vast collection can be divided into three main eras. First, the Maoist era after the founding of the People’s Republic of China, when Chairman Mao Zedong called upon artists to produce work that reflected the nation’s transformation. Then the years of the Great Leap Forward in the late ’50s, and the unexpected disaster that was the Great Famine. Mao had declared that artists must paint aspirational pictures for the nation. This resulted in poster art moving away from themes of Soviet socialist realism and embracing specifically Chinese elements. Posters focused on milestones like the wildly disastrous Four Pests Campaign, opposed U.S. imperialism — with cartoon depictions of the country as a shrunken, green villain — and declared ownership of Tibet.

The third era — the Cultural Revolution and after — is when Chinese propaganda art skyrocketed, with woodcut posters and bold and expressive imagery. Themes included everything from the youth heading to work in the countryside to the country’s progress in science and technology to the “triumph” of human will over nature.

This extended glimpse into China’s past also lays bare the murkier side of history. A particularly eerie example: the reproduction of a 1953 poster depicting the “grand ceremony to mark the founding of the People’s Republic of China.” The original features Mao with a group of party leaders. However the 1956 reproduction features the exact same scene, but without party leader Gao Gang (who had been among the casualties of the first major purge within the Chinese Communist Party).

Each poster is accompanied by detailed information, mostly in English — visitors to the Shanghai Propaganda Poster Art Centre are predominantly foreign. The museum is featured in a couple of Western guidebooks and travel websites, but it’s not well-known at home — none of my Chinese co-workers in Beijing had heard of it. Yang says the interest among internationals is higher because local people are familiar with poster art. Nonetheless, I still consider it a small victory that I managed to coerce a co-worker to visit the museum on his latest trip to Shanghai. “It’s very interesting,” he said, scratching his chin thoughtfully. “But why so hard to find?”

They also asked investigators to take measures so that the sale and future minting of the coin are prevented and the people behind the stunt are found and brought to justice.

The Communists of Russia is a relatively small group that apparently started as a spoiler project in a bid to draw voters away from Russia’s largest opposition group – the Communist Party of the Russian Federation. The new leftists claim their primary objective is the return of the Soviet Union to its previous borders and to put the nation back on the socialist track with real, old-school communism as the ultimate objective.

However, the Communists of Russia were so adept at attracting media attention that it eventually allowed them to register as a political party and even put forward their leader, Maxim Suraikin, as a candidate in the 2018 presidential election (Suraikin finished seventh with less than one percent of votes, while the candidate from the other, ‘real’, communist party came in second with over 11 percent).

The failed assassination attempt against Vladimir Lenin by Fanny Kaplan (real name: Feiga Roytblat) took place in Moscow on August 30, 2018. The leader of the Bolshevik Revolution delivered a speech to a group of workers and was walking to his car when Kaplan approached and fired three rounds at him point blank.

The woman was immediately detained and put on trial, during which she explained that she wanted to kill Lenin because he had banned her party, the Socialist-Revolutionaries (SR), and she considered him a traitor to the working people’s cause.

The trial lasted just three days, after which Kaplan was executed and her body was burnt in a barrel.

Lenin survived the hit but the wounds seriously undermined his health and many researchers believe them to be the main cause of his subsequent stroke and death.

  • The US Department of Justice is reportedly investigating the tech company Huawei on accusations of breaching sanctions on Iran.

  • Last week the US slapped restrictions on another Chinese smartphone maker, ZTE, for numerous infractions including breaching Iran sanctions.
  • But China appears to be just as angry at ZTE as it is at the US, slamming the company in reports and even pulling a much-lauded documentary celebrating the company’s innovations.

The US Department of Justice is reportedly investigating Huawei Technologies, a move that could jeopardize the company’s reputation in China.

Since 2016 the Department of Justice has been looking into whether the smartphone supplier breached sanctions by shipping US products to Iran, according to two sources who spoke with Reuters. The probe is reportedly being run out of the US attorney’s office in Brooklyn.

The news comes less than a week after the Department of Commerce banned American firms from selling products and technology to Chinese smartphone maker ZTE for seven years, in part for breaching sanctions against Iran and North Korea.

While the Chinese government was unsurprisingly angered by the US decision — “The move should be regarded as part of the US tactics in its trade friction with China. Targeting technology is like throttling the neck of the Chinese enterprises,” an editorial in the state-run China Daily read — it also slammed ZTE, which could set a worrying precedent for Huawei.

China’s top regulator of state-owned enterprises called ZTE’s US interactions “stupid and passive” in a recent report.

“Many domestic enterprises are paying a terrible price for ZTE’s short-sightedness and dishonesty. Our country’s diplomatic layout and image will inevitably be affected,” it said.

But an even bigger indicator of China’s anger over the situation could be the mysterious disappearance of its much touted propaganda film “Amazing China.”

The nationalistic film, produced by the state broadcaster and released nationally, celebrated China’s advances in innovation and infrastructure since President Xi Jinping took office five years ago. Students and Communist Party members around the country were instructed to watch the film which glorified the achievements of Chinese companies, including ZTE.

But four days after the US announced its ZTE decision last week, a memo was sent to websites hosting the film and some cinemas to take the film down “until further notice.”

“Please follow the instruction seriously,” the leaked memo reportedly said.

The instruction appears to have originated from the government’s propaganda department, which had hoped the documentary would bring in 1 billion yuan ($158 million) in ticket sales.

It hasn’t been a good year for Huawei and ZTE in the US. First, intelligence chiefs said they wouldn’t recommend citizens use the Chinese phones as they could be a conduit for foreign surveillance, and then large US retailers, including Best Buy, decided to stop stocking Huawei.
