Hawaii’s decommissioned nuclear attack sirens will get another chance to warn Americans of impending atomic doom. After collecting dust for three decades, the warning system has been reinstated amid growing fears of war with North Korea.

The state’s emergency management officials announced that the vintage air-raid sirens will be tested for the first time in nearly 30 years on Friday. The drill will last for 60 seconds and the system’s signature wail will be heard in more than 400 locations across the central Pacific islands.

The public is asked to “get inside, stay inside and stay tuned” if they should hear the sirens.

The potential threat of North Korean missile launches has prompted monthly tests of the warning system, Hawaiian authorities said.

“Emergency preparedness is knowing what to expect and what to do for all hazards,” Hawaii Emergency Management Agency chief Vern Miyagi said in a video message posted online, according to Reuters.

Hawaii is believed to be within range of North Korea’s intercontinental ballistic missiles, and would be a likely target if war between Washington and Pyongyang broke out. Washington has adopted a hardline stance on North Korea, which has been exacerbated by an uptick in US military activity around the Korean Peninsula.

US President Donald Trump has often used incendiary language when discussing North Korea and its leader, Kim Jong-un. In one notable case, he chided US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson for “wasting his time trying to negotiate with Little Rocket Man,” his derogatory nickname for Kim.

Both Moscow and Beijing have warned Washington against unilateral action to halt Pyongyang’s nuclear program, advocating instead for a diplomatic approach that won’t jeopardize regional security.

Speaking at a press briefing at the UN General Assembly in September, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov described the verbal sparring between Trump and Jong-un as “a kindergarten fight between children.”

The missile defense system is in fact a crucial part of Washington’s planned “prompt global strike” contingency, which could target any US adversary in the world, potentially including Russia or China, the colonel explained.

Thus the “unlimited deployment” of the elements of the US global missile defense system around the world poses a “threat to humanity” and is a “major challenge” to global security.

“A link between the deployment of the missile defense elements and the development of the prompt global strike system is evident,” said Emelyanov, adding that such a concept could involve launching a “disarming strike” against Russia’s or China’s strategic nuclear forces, the missile defense system being subsequently used to protect the US from any retaliatory move.

The development of such a system is just “further evidence proving that Washington is seeking to disrupt the existing balance of power and achieve global strategic dominance,” the colonel added. He also warned that further expansion of the US missile defense system poses a grave danger to international security, as it would significantly lower the threshold of a potential use of nuclear weapons by the US and its allies.

The US is in fact building up its missile defense capabilities in an effort to build a capacity to use nuclear weapons with “minimal costs,” Emelyanov stated.

“The global missile defense system lowers the threshold of the use of nuclear weapons as it creates an illusion of impunity in case of a surprise [US] attack, using strategic offensive weapons under the ‘missile defense umbrella’,” he said.

Emelyanov warned that the US continues to misinform the international community about its true capabilities, even though the sheer number of the US ABM interceptor missiles is expected to exceed the number of warheads mounted on the Russian ballistic intercontinental missiles at some point.

“The US specialists use explicitly unrealistic scenarios and basic data” in their assessment of the missile defense systems’ capabilities, thus providing misleading information about their true potential, he said.

Meanwhile the deployment of US missile defense does little to protect the countries where its elements are stationed, but on the contrary puts them at risk instead as it makes them targets for potential strikes while still defending primarily the US territory and its interests, Emelyanov stressed.

“It is Washington that will decide, whom these systems will protect,” Emelyanov said, adding that the countries hosting the elements of the US ABM in fact become “hostages” of the US policies.

Trump’s comments were the latest salvo in an ongoing battle between the president and the outgoing senator, who is set to retire after the 2018 midterm elections.

Last week Corker, who is the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, criticized Trump for contradicting Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s efforts to ease tensions with North Korea through diplomacy. He also singled out Tillerson, Defense Secretary James Mattis, and White House chief of staff John Kelly as the “people that help separate our country from chaos,” seeming to deliberately omit Trump.

After Corker made the “chaos” comments, Trump claimed that the senator sought his endorsement before deciding against seeking reelection in 2018, an assertion that Corker’s office said was untrue, noting that the president himself offered to endorse the senator just last week.

Corker responded quickly, saying the White House was an “adult day care center,” and told the New York Times that Trump’s actions could start the US down a path to World War III.

Despite lobbying from top Republicans including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Corker ruled out a bid for running for reelection as some on the right, such as former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon, considered backing a primary challenger to the Tennessee senator, who has been increasingly critical of the president’s conduct in office.

Vigilante mobs have begun summarily executing people suspected of being “blood-sucking” vampires, leading the UN to recall several staff members from both the Phalombe and Mulanje districts of Southern Malawi. Five people have been killed since mid-September.

“While His Excellency President Arthur Peter Mutharika was attending the 72nd United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York recently, he received reports of very distressing and agonizing allegations of blood-sucking incidents in some parts of the country,” a statement from the office of the President of Malawi read, as cited by The Malawi Voice.

“The President also received reports of very disturbing instances of mob justice carried on persons suspected to be connected to the alleged blood-sucking incidents.”

Both belief in and a fear of witchcraft is still widespread in Malawi, which remains one of the world’s poorest countries. Vigilante violence also gripped the country back in 2002 after a similar vampire scare.

“These districts have severely been affected by the ongoing stories of blood-sucking and possible existence of vampires,” the UN Department on Safety and Security (UNDSS) said in a security report on the Phalombe and Mulanje districts as cited by Reuters.

“Some UN staff have relocated while others are still in the districts depending on locations of their operations,” acting UN Resident Coordinator Florence Rolle told Reuters in an emailed statement.

“UNDSS is continuing to monitor the situation closely to ensure all affected UN staff are back in the field as soon as possible,” Rolle added.

It is unclear how many UN staff had been relocated as a result of the violence thus far.

The report recommended a “temporary suspension of UN activities in the area until the situation is normalized,” adding that the rumors allegedly began in neighboring Mozambique.

Meanwhile, the AFP previously reported a total of six fatalities in “vampire”-related violence in Marawi since mid-September.

Two people were beaten to death by a violent mob who “suspected the two (victims) of being blood suckers,” said police spokesperson James Kadadzera, as cited by AFP.

“There is no evidence of blood-sucking and nobody has come to police to complain.”

Showtime was hit with a federal class-action lawsuit amid reports that it delivered shoddy or non-existent $ 99 streams of the Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor fight Saturday. This is contrary to Showtime’s promise of 1080p resolution at 60 frames per second.

“Instead of being a ‘witness to history’ as defendant had promised, the only thing plaintiff witnessed was grainy video, error screens, buffer events, and stalls,” declared the lawsuit (PDF) filed in federal court on behalf of a Portland man named Zack Bartel. The suit seeks to represent “thousands of other consumers” unable to stream the Mayweather fight in HD as Showtime advertised.

Defendant intentionally misrepresented the quality and grade of video consumers would see using its app, and knowingly failed to disclose that its system was defective with respect to the amount of bandwidth available, and that defendant’s service would materially fail to conform to the quality of HD video defendant promised.

Bartel bought the service from the Showtime PPV app to stream on his Apple TV, the suit said.
