The blare of police sirens. The tilt and lift of stern voices giving stern speeches. You hear and begin to see it all when you walk into the visitor center of the Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site. The incident in 1957, when National Guard troops were sent to protect nine African-American students who originally were barred from enrolling at the previously all-white school, enshrined Arkansas in the racial injustice hall of shame.

But it did not have to be that way. “In Arkansas there is a lot of navel gazing — asking, ‘What are we like?’ And the real scar was Central High and becoming the poster child of resistance to racial integration in schools, which is such a terrible irony,” says Janine Parry, a University of Arkansas-Fayetteville political scientist. Comparing Arkansas to the rest of the South in the 19th century, she says, “There wasn’t as much of a history of lynching. Everyone was so poor. There weren’t [as many] plantations. We had this racial tolerance and indifference.” For a short time less than a century before Central High, the state that calls itself the Land of Opportunity really appeared to be one — for all people, regardless of race or creed.

[Arkansas] is the state for colored men who wish to live by their merits.

Bishop Henry M. Turner, African Methodist Episcopal Church, 1889

Part of that sentiment is embedded in the geography of Arkansas. While called Southern, it is not the Deep South. The northern part of the state, today as in earlier eras, is marked by Midwestern manufacturing, and its west taps into the cowboy mind-set of neighboring Oklahoma and Texas. Most important, it shares the Mississippi Delta — a fertile region familiar to Black farmers but with less racial tension than in the Magnolia State on the east bank of the river. Despite trying to enslave free Blacks on the eve of the Civil War, writes Fon Gordon in Caste and Class: The Black Experience in Arkansas, 1880–1920, “many Blacks in the Deep South came to regard Arkansas as a ‘promised land.’ ”

Heard(1898) 46 bishop h.m. turner

The state had plenty of motivation to encourage that image … whether or not it held up to scrutiny. While plantations had never quite taken root here, after the Civil War, planters started developing the Arkansas side of the Delta for cotton and rice production. Scores of labor agents made their way throughout adjacent Southern states, trying to lure farmhands who would toil in the fields. As Gordon recalls in her book, a former South Carolinian remembers his parents moving to Arkansas in 1888 after an agent described the state as “a tropical country of soft and balmy air, where coconuts, oranges, lemons and bananas grew. Ordinary things like corn and cotton, with little cultivation, grew an enormous yield.”

Prominent African-American leaders joined the recruitment effort, convinced that they had at last found a land to call their own. “Arkansas is destined to be the great Negro state of the country,” said Bishop Henry M. Turner of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in January 1889. “The meagre prejudice compared to some states, and opportunity to acquire wealth, all conspire to make it inviting to the colored man.” The Georgia-based leader of the United States’ prominent Black denomination continued, “This is the state for colored men who wish to live by their merits.”

Black Americans began to heed the call. The population of the state tripled from 1870 to 1890. Blacks formed a majority in two towns, Helena and Pine Bluff, where they developed a “small but successful” middle class, Gordon writes. From 1868 to 1893, every state general assembly had at least one Black legislator, helped in part by the Republican Party’s decision to strategically elevate minority voices. Ironically, considering the later desegregation fight in Arkansas, this era saw the creation of the first state public schools and the passage of an 1873 civil-rights law that made it illegal to bar Blacks from public institutions.

In Arkansas, attorneys, dentists and other Black professionals emerged at a time when in some states, such as Florida, doctors still had a whites-only entrance on Main Street and Black patients had to enter in the back. “In Arkansas, at least, one would not have to endure that kind of humiliation and degradation,” Gordon tells OZY. “You went to see a physician, and he had only one waiting room for everybody.”

In time the state’s promise of opportunity proved illusory. If Arkansas had seemed different from its Southern neighbors, it was because the Black population was significantly smaller — a quarter of the population, compared to majorities and near majorities in Mississippi and Louisiana. “The Black demographic was considered less of a threat,” Gordon says. But as the population grew, so did the turmoil. From 1889 to 1918, there were 214 cases of racial violence in Arkansas. Nevertheless, leaders like Bishop Turner continued to call for Black settlement, partly out of wishful thinking. “African-Americans certainly wanted to believe there was some place in the South they could call home,” Gordon notes. “In a system of oppression, they were trying to make the best of a bad situation.”

In the aftermath of the Roaring Twenties, all-Black or nearly all-Black towns emerged in the South, which led to some economic gains. It was akin to the “lace-curtain Irish,” Gordon says, referring to those who rose from working class to middle class and developed economies in which minorities did business with each other, independent of the dominant white economy. “While there wasn’t a comparable term for African-Americans, [the same types of gains were] achieved in parts of all the Southern states,” Gordon adds. But the advent of Jim Crow laws derailed the journey to equality for decades.

Still, there was a chance that Arkansas could have avoided its wrong turn in history. Born poor in the Ozarks, Orval Faubus grew up as a liberal socialist who appointed the first African-Americans to state boards and commissions in the ’50s and, during his 1954 campaign for governor, promised not to interfere with federal education decisions.

But by 1956 Faubus could not avoid the race issue. Ultimately, his choice became whether to stick to his principles at the risk of losing the biannual gubernatorial contest and being forgotten, or to abandon those principles, win the election and be remembered. When he chose the latter, he indeed was remembered, along with his state and a high school in Little Rock — for being on the wrong side of history.

The first paid online service for Nintendo Switch, simply named Nintendo Switch Online, is set to arrive at some point later this month, and we’re still waiting on a few key details. One surprise about the service emerged on Friday via Nintendo’s official site, and it’s not a great one: there will be limits to the service’s promised cloud-save support.

Nintendo Switch Online’s $ 20/year cost includes a promise to “save your data online for easy access”—which, for the uninitiated, will be the only way to back up your Switch games’ save data when it launches. Currently, should your Nintendo Switch be lost, stolen, or damaged, your progress in games like Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is toast, as you can neither move save data from one console to another nor personally back it up to a hard drive.

An eagle-eyed member of the ResetERA gaming community noticed on Friday that Splatoon 2‘s newest listing at Nintendo’s official site, for its upcoming “starter pack” version, includes a new piece of warning text: “This game does not support Save Data Cloud backup.” It’s unclear exactly when this text was posted, but a quick Internet search for that exact phrase, limited solely to the nintendo.com domain, brings up the same warning for the following current and upcoming Switch games:

  • The director of “Crazy Rich Asians” is in talks to make a movie about the rescue of 12 boys and their coach who were rescued from a Thai cave.
  • Jon M. Chu has pledged to make a film that won’t be a “white wash,” indicating Asian actors would be front and center of his film.
  • Chu said it is important this story is told “correctly and respectfully” and so that “history doesn’t get it wrong.”

There is a second film about the Thailand cave rescue in the works, this time from the director of “Crazy Rich Asians” who has pledged to not “white wash” the cast.

Earlier this week, Christian film studio Pure Flix announced it was on the ground in Thailand and seeking exclusive rights to the stories of rescuers, divers, and the families of the 12 boys and their coach who were trapped in a cave for up to 17 days. The managing director, who is married to a Thai woman who knew the former Navy SEAL that died on the mission, said it could be a movie that “inspires millions” and that he sees it being a “major Hollywood film with A-list stars.”

AT&T is raising the base price of its DirecTV Now streaming service by $ 5 per month, despite promising in court that its acquisition of Time Warner Inc. would lower TV prices.

AT&T confirmed the price increase to Ars and said it began informing customers of the increase this past weekend. “The $ 5 increase will go into effect July 26 for new customers and varies for existing customers based on their billing date,” an AT&T spokesperson said.

The $ 5 increase will affect all DirecTV Now tiers except for a Spanish-language TV package, AT&T told Ars. That means the DirecTV Now packages that currently cost $ 35, $ 50, $ 60, and $ 70 a month will go up to $ 40, $ 55, $ 65, and $ 75.

A wireless update of antilock braking software improved the stopping distance of Tesla’s electric Model 3, prompting Consumer Reports to reverse course and give the car its “Recommended Buy” rating.

The magazine said Wednesday that the update cut 19 feet off the car’s stopping distance from 60 miles per hour. A previous test — the results of which were released a little more than a week ago — found that it took 152 feet for the Model S compact car to stop from 60, the longest braking distance of any modern car the magazine has tested.

Consumer Reports says it will retest Tesla Model 3 after promised brake fix https://briefnews.eu/consumer-reports-says-it-will-retest-tesla-model-3-after-promised-brake-fix/ https://briefnews.eu/consumer-reports-says-it-will-retest-tesla-model-3-after-promised-brake-fix/#respond Tue, 22 May 2018 22:18:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/consumer-reports-says-it-will-retest-tesla-model-3-after-promised-brake-fix/

Consumer Reports has said it will retest the Tesla Model 3 it purchased to confirm that a promised firmware update to the braking system corrects the poor and inconsistent emergency stopping distances the publication reported.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk promised the fix this morning after it was widely reported that Consumer Reports would not be recommending the Model 3 in large part due to the braking problems.

“If Tesla can update the brakes over the air – an industry first – we’d be happy to retest our Model 3,” said Jake Fisher, Consumer Reports‘ director of automatic testing.

The rather doubtful tone of Fisher’s response echoes our own skepticism of how an over-the-air software update will change braking distances. Nevertheless, if Tesla can do it, then Consumer Reports will be in a position to indicate whether it was successful. Remember, the publication purchased its Model 3, just as any other consumer might.

Another publication that purchased a Model 3, Edmunds.com, did not experience the same braking distance inconsistency, but its reported emergency stop from 60 mph in 130 feet is still longer than average.

Frankly, the question of whether an over-the-air update can correct a braking problem glosses over the fact that there was such a fundamental flaw with a vital vehicle system in the first place. The brakes are not the same as a touchscreen infotainment system. It’s fair to ask how Tesla’s own vehicle testing didn’t reveal the issue, since it was experienced in two different Model 3s that Consumer Reports tested as well as a third tested by Car and Driver. It’s also fair to ask if Tesla owners are effectively conducting the extensive vehicle testing car manufacturers normally do before a car is brought to market.

We definitely want to know what this over-the-air update will correct and what difference it will make when Consumer Reports‘ car has it installed.

‘Westworld’ Creators Release Season 2 Spoiler Video As Promised, But There’s a Twist https://briefnews.eu/westworld-creators-release-season-2-spoiler-video-as-promised-but-theres-a-twist/ https://briefnews.eu/westworld-creators-release-season-2-spoiler-video-as-promised-but-theres-a-twist/#respond Tue, 10 Apr 2018 08:09:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/westworld-creators-release-season-2-spoiler-video-as-promised-but-theres-a-twist/ Westworld season 2 spoiler video

This afternoon, Westworld creators/showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy made a daring promise: in order to avoid having Redditors guess season 2’s major plot beats before the show itself revealed them to its audience, the showrunners said they would release a detailed video online ahead of its premiere that went ahead and spoiled everything up front. According to them, the plan was to release this information to a select group of gatekeepers who would then be able to better control the flow of spoilers out into the larger world of the internet.

Tonight, Nolan and Joy followed through on their promise to release a spoiler-filled video. But as you might expect from the people behind such a mind-bending show, there’s a twist.

In the interest of protecting those who truly don’t want to know anything at all about the second season of Westworld, I’ll drop a brief spoiler warning right here. Now is your last chance to avoid discovering what this video contains.

You can read the full backstory of this zany plot right here, but after his initial post met their requirement of 1000 upvotes, Nolan returned to Reddit with this post, linking to the video below and saying, “All right guys. We left this in your hands. Some may feel this is a drastic step, but I, for one, love and trust this community.”

Westworld Season 2 Spoiler Video

The video begins with voiceover from Jeffrey Wright, narrating what appears to be a few very real plot points about his character, Bernard. He wakes up on a beach, is questioned by Delos’s head of security, and slowly starts to remember what happened to him. There’s even a reference to “The Door,” which is the “secret” title for the second season that the showrunners used internally on the production. We know from a previous interview with Wright that this all sounds legitimate: “He’s got some cognitive challenges as we enter the first episodes of season 2 and he has additional challenges that come up as he goes on board in terms of him being able to process,” he said.

But right around the 1:30 mark, we find out the true purpose of this video: it was an elaborate Rickroll, as actresses Angela Sarafyan (who plays Clementine) and Evan Rachel Wood (who plays Dolores) begin serenading the audience with a piano rendition of Rick Astley‘s “Never Gonna Give You Up.” Reddit loves this song, and considering Nolan is a longtime Redditor, it makes sense that he’d cater to that specific audience with this gag. (The remainder of the video is black and white footage of a dog sitting in front of a piano while the score plays in the background.)

While the showrunners’ announcement about their controversial plan to release spoilers may have sounded interesting in theory, there was no practical way to ensure that the revealed information didn’t spread far and wide. Nolan and Joy knew this, of course, so they just decided to have a little fun with everyone as a way to get people talking about Westworld before it returns to HBO. Mission accomplished.

And not to gloat (because it seemed pretty obvious), but we predicted something like this would happen. Here’s an excerpt from my write-up about the creators’ proposed plan from earlier this afternoon:

And remember, Nolan co-wrote The Prestige. He’s all about misdirection and pulling off the magic trick. Releasing a fake video that tricks fans into thinking they know where the show is going, only to pull the rug out from under everyone when it does the exact opposite? Now that seems much more in line with Nolan’s M.O.

Westworld season 2 premieres on April 22, 2018.

$500mn crypto heist: Coincheck hack victims promised compensation https://briefnews.eu/500mn-crypto-heist-coincheck-hack-victims-promised-compensation/ https://briefnews.eu/500mn-crypto-heist-coincheck-hack-victims-promised-compensation/#respond Thu, 08 Mar 2018 16:42:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/500mn-crypto-heist-coincheck-hack-victims-promised-compensation/

A Japanese exchange is to begin compensating customers who had their cryptocurrency stolen in a heist worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Coincheck announced that it would reimburse all 260,000 users affected.

Hackers entered its systems and plundered $ 500million worth of the NEM coins in January this year. Coincheck froze all withdrawals of yen and cryptocurrencies following the heist. The company said it would offer customers compensation worth around 80 percent of the digital token’s original value. The theft is thought to be one of the biggest robberies in history and has given rise to serious questions about the security of cryptocurrency exchanges.

Japan’s Financial Services Agency (FSA) conducted a crackdown on the exchanges in the aftermath of the attack. On Thursday, the FSA ordered Coincheck to improve its system and penalized six other exchanges for failing to implement stringent anti-fraud measures. Two exchanges were ordered to halt operations for a month, according to Forbes.

Some of stolen Coincheck funds were later traced to an exchange in Canada where they were converted to other cryptocurrencies and then sent back to Japan, according to researchers at BIG Blockchain Intelligence Group. “We felt it was a significant amount that warranted looking into,” Shone Anstey, president of BIG, told Bloomberg. “They are trying to move it before the door is closed, but there is a lot to move.”

Japan was also the scene of the largest previous hack. Online thieves made away with bitcoin worth $ 450million in the Mt Gox attack in 2014. The CEO of the exchange, Mark Karpeles, faces charges of embezzlement related to the hack. He has since been released on bail.

The push to regulate the market has seen cryptocurrencies lose their values in recent times. On Wednesday, bitcoin fell to a one-and-a-half-week low on Bitstamp after the US Securities and Exchange Commission issued a warning that some digital currency trading platforms are “potentially unlawful.”

In a statement posted on its website, the SEC said that if a platform offers to trade digital assets and operates as an “exchange,” it must also register with the regulator as a national securities exchange. “Many platforms refer to themselves as ‘exchanges,’ which can give the misimpression to investors that they are regulated or meet the regulatory standards of a national securities exchange,” the statement read.
