  • Saudi Arabia’s human rights record has come under intense scrutiny in recent months.
  • Earlier this year, the country detained dozens of prominent women’s rights activists — most without access to communication and many who were never formally charged with a crime.
  • Award-winning campaigner Samar Badawi was arrested in August, which sparked a massive feud between Riyadh and Ottawa over the Kingdom’s human rights record.
  • In October, journalist Jamal Khashoggi was murdered by Saudi agents, possibly at the order of the Saudi crown prince, which thrust the country’s human rights violations back into the spotlight.
  • In November, testimonies from detained human rights activists emerged detailing torture, interrogation, and sexual abuse at the hands of Saudi authorities in prison.

Saudi Arabia’s human rights record has come under intense scrutiny in recent months — even before the murder of Jamal Khashoggi made international headlines.

Earlier this year, the country detained dozens of prominent women’s rights activists — many without formal charge or access to communication — most of whom still remain in custody.

  • CBS has hired two law firms to investigate the sexual misconduct allegations against its CEO, Leslie Moonves.
  • Six women alleged that Moonves had accosted them sexually without their consent, according to a New Yorker article published last week.
  • Covington & Burling and Debevoise & Plimpton, two top-flight legal entities, will handle the matter and “conduct a full investigation of the allegations,” according to CBS’s board of directors.

Two different law firms will investigate allegations of sexual harassment levied against CBS CEO Leslie Moonves, the company’s board of directors said Wednesday evening, part of a process that will likely determine the fate of the well-known Hollywood executive.

Covington & Burling and Debevoise & Plimpton, two top-flight legal entities, will handle the matter and “conduct a full investigation of the allegations in recent press reports about Chairman and CEO Leslie Moonves, CBS News and cultural issues at all levels of CBS,” the board said in its statement.

3 prominent Russian journalists killed in Central African Republic – reports https://briefnews.eu/3-prominent-russian-journalists-killed-in-central-african-republic-reports/ https://briefnews.eu/3-prominent-russian-journalists-killed-in-central-african-republic-reports/#respond Tue, 31 Jul 2018 16:48:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/3-prominent-russian-journalists-killed-in-central-african-republic-reports/

A three-man crew of Russian journalists was killed in the Central African Republic, with colleagues saying they were shooting a film about mercenaries in the country. Local police say they may have fallen victim to a robbery.

The three men have been named as journalist Orhan Dzhemal, director Aleksandr Rastorguyev, and cameraman Kirill Radchenko. Dzhemal was a well-known war correspondent, who had been wounded while reporting from Syria; while Rastorguyev had been awarded multiple prizes for his documentaries. Russian embassy officials are currently traveling to the country to identify the bodies.

AFP initially reported that the men had been ambushed at a roadblock 23km from the central town of Sibut, located inside one of the world’s poorest and most unstable countries, which is divided between warring fiefdoms. A local police source told Interfax news agency that robbery was the suspected motive of the attack.

The nature of the journalists’ assignment in the CAR, which rarely makes international headlines, has not been officially confirmed. Aleksandr Venediktov, the chief editor of Ekho Moskvy radio; and Maksim Shevchenko, another well-known journalist who said Dzhemal was his closest friend, said the crew was reporting on the private Russian military company known as the Wagner Group.

China fired a prominent professor in a major win for the country’s growing #MeToo movement https://briefnews.eu/china-fired-a-prominent-professor-in-a-major-win-for-the-countrys-growing-metoo-movement/ https://briefnews.eu/china-fired-a-prominent-professor-in-a-major-win-for-the-countrys-growing-metoo-movement/#respond Tue, 16 Jan 2018 09:18:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/china-fired-a-prominent-professor-in-a-major-win-for-the-countrys-growing-metoo-movement/ metoo chinaGuang Niu/Getty Images

  • A Chinese university announced it had removed a prominent professor after hearing multiple allegations of sexual misconduct against him.
  • The professor’s firing has become a major win for China’s #MeToo movement, which has struggled to gain traction in a traditional and largely conservative society.
  • Sexual misconduct has long been taboo subject in China, but the movement is slowly bringing the topic to the national agenda.

The #MeToo movement spread like wildfire on social media across the globe this year, with several countries creating their own version of the saying on social media.

But China’s version, #WoYeShi, has struggled to gain traction in a traditional and largely conservative society that still struggles to accept that sexual harassment is still an issue.

But last week, the movement had a major victory. Beihang University announced late Thursday that it had removed a prominent professor after hearing multiple allegations of sexual misconduct against him, according to the Washington Post.

In its investigation, the university found that Professor Chen Xiaowu “did sexually harass female students,” the Post said. The university added that Chen would be fired from his post as vice president of the university and had his teaching license revoked.

Luo Xixi, a Chinese academic living in the US wrote on Chinese social media that as Chen’s former student many years back, the professor lured her to his sister’s house home and made unwanted sexual advances, according to reports. She managed to escape in tears, according to her post, and five other students came forward with allegations after Luo went public.

According to the Post, Luo called the news an “initial victory” in a statement.

The movement’s initial victory came out of a grassroots push for survivors of sexual misconduct to find their voice, particularly on university campuses.

According to the South China Morning Post, students and alumni from dozens of Chinese universities launched online petitions in the last several weeks urging their schools to put policy into place that would prevent sexual harassment on campuses.

But the movement faces many challenges

Sexual misconduct has long been taboo subject in China, apparent by the fact that the movement has struggled to gain its footing in the conservative country. Besides for the trauma of assault, victims are also up against the state’s crackdown on activism and an inefficient legal system, according to the Post.

“Some women have come out … [but] what’s really striking is how few,” Leta Hong Fincher, an expert in China’s feminist movement told the Guardian.

Fincher told the Guardian that China’s Communist party censorship has facilitated a culture of censorship, making it all the more difficult for women to come forward and share their story.

Hong Fincher also believes Chinese media has been told to avoid aggressive coverage of sensitive issues, leaving issues like sexual misconduct out of the public agenda.

“There is a history of the Chinese government being really worried about political upheaval outside its borders affecting its own population and there is no question whatsoever that the #MeToo movement is seen by the authorities as potentially posing a threat,” she says.

Huang Xueqin, a Freelance journalist, shared her story of sexual assault with the South China Morning Post and voiced her frustration with the movement’s slow burn.

“This is such a serious problem, but why is it so quiet here? It’s like the #MeToo movement never created ripples in China,” she said.

Huang created a social media platform called Anti Sexual Harassment for victims to come forward in a safe space and gather the tools necessary to prosecute perpetrators.

Despite the challenges, Huang told the Post that she is determined to catapult the movement forward.

“If the government asks me to stop, I will negotiate with them. But I don’t want to and I want to keep going, because I am doing the right thing.”

The growing list of female Russian presidential hopefuls has received a new addition. A Muslim journalist who is the wife and adviser of a Russian mufti is the latest to submit her bid.

Aina Gamzatova, a successful journalist and the head of Russia’s largest Muslim media holding, submitted her registration papers to the Central Elections Committee on Monday. She was nominated as a presidential candidate by a local initiative group in the Russian Republic of Dagestan in late December and is running as an independent.

Gamzatova is the wife of the chief mufti of Dagestan, and also his government and public relations adviser. In addition, the 46-year-old runs several charity organizations.

Running as an independent contender without the backing of a party means that Gamzatova still has to collect and submit as many as 300,000 signatures from supporters from all Russian regions. Candidates representing parliamentary parties do not have to collect any signatures, while those backed by parties not represented in the Russian parliament have to garner the support of 100,000 signatories.

Russia’s first female Muslim presidential candidate has not yet unveiled a detailed election program, sticking to broad appeals for national unity and cohesion. She has, however, already gained some support from Russian Muslims and even caught the attention of international media, including Al Jazeera, as well as German, Iranian, Indonesian, and Bosnian outlets, among others.

Earlier, Russian socialite Ksenia Sobchak, head of the Russian edition of the international fashion magazine L’Officiel, submitted her presidential bid to the Central Elections Committee. The list of the female Russian presidential hopefuls includes other public figures and politicians, as well as some more unusual candidates, such as crane operator Natalya Lisitsina, who represents leftist movement the All-Russian United Labor Front.

The Russian presidential election is scheduled for March 18. So far, Vladimir Zhirinovsky, the veteran leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR), is the only fully-fledged candidate. Current Russian President Vladimir Putin will run for a new term as an independent, even though his election bid has been endorsed by several parties, including the parliamentary majority United Russia party and the leftist parliamentary opposition Fair Russia party.

According to the head of the Central Elections Commission, Ella Pamfilova, 21 Russian political parties and 30 independent politicians and activists have declared their intention to run in the 2018 election.

One of the most prominent sites calling out fake news may shut down because it’s being held ‘hostage’ by advertisers https://briefnews.eu/one-of-the-most-prominent-sites-calling-out-fake-news-may-shut-down-because-its-being-held-hostage-by-advertisers/ https://briefnews.eu/one-of-the-most-prominent-sites-calling-out-fake-news-may-shut-down-because-its-being-held-hostage-by-advertisers/#respond Tue, 25 Jul 2017 02:39:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/one-of-the-most-prominent-sites-calling-out-fake-news-may-shut-down-because-its-being-held-hostage-by-advertisers/ snopesSnopes

Fact-checking website Snopes said it may shut down over a dispute with a vendor that is withholding advertising revenue.

The 23-year-old site announced on Monday said it was “in danger of closing its doors” over a dispute with Proper Media, whom Snopes founder David Mikkelson claimed is holding Snopes “hostage” by barring the site from making modifications, placing new ads, and receiving revenue from existing ads.

A GoFundMe set up by Snopes to fund its staff of 16 and operating costs had raised over $ 200,000 within hours of launching on Monday.

“In a general sense, I’m chagrined, because we have always been a self-supporting company, and I don’t like asking the public for money,” Mikkelson told Business Insider in an interview. “But we’ve been boxed into this position, we’ve been cut off from what we usually get, we don’t have any other way.”

Snopes’ fundraising drive caps what is a contract and partial-acquisition gone wrong.

In 2015, Mikkelson contracted with Proper Media to provide web development services to help grow the site and add advertising revenue. But when Mikkelson and his wife divorced in 2016, the five individuals who own equity in Proper Media became more involved by purchasing his ex-wife’s 50% share of Snopes’ parent company, Bardav, which they financed by taking out a substantial loan.

But in the months since the purchase, Mikkelson clashed with the company, which he felt was siphoning off too much advertising revenue from Snopes, and which he claimed was not performing essential services like sharing ad revenue in a timely fashion and sharing web traffic information.

Earlier this year, Proper Media shareholder Vincent Green resigned from the company and joined Snopes, which Mikkelson claims gives the two of them majority control of Bardav, and allowed them to terminate the contract between Proper Media and Snopes.

For its part, Proper Media claimed that Mikkelson and Green are in breach of contract, saying Green’s share of the company did not travel with him when he joined Snopes.

The site suggested that Mikkelson has “repeatedly engaged in fraud upon Proper Media” in an “effort to obtain approval for Bardav to pay Mikkelson a sizable salary and large sums of Mikkelson’s personal expenses,” including a $ 10,000 company traveling expense to pay for Mikkelson’s honeymoon with his wife Elyssa Young, who is also a Snopes employee.

And counter to Mikkelson’s claim, last week, Proper Media released $ 100,000 to Bardav recently with a judge’s stipulation that Mikkelson would not be allowed to manage the money.

“This case involves unlawful jockeying for ownership and control of the fact-checking website Snopes.com,” Proper Media said in a May complaint filed in San Diego. “But while Snopes is built entirely around the concepts of transparency and truth, its founder, Defendant David Mikkelson, has engaged in a lengthy scheme of concealment and subterfuge to gain control of the company and to drain its profits.”

Proper Media attorney Karl Kronenberger told Business Insider that Mikkelson could also move his site over to another content management system.

“He can move it at any time, and he hosted the site for years,” Kronenberger said. “The problem is he wants proper media’s expertise, but he doesn’t want to pay for it.”

According to the Snopes founder, Proper Media has not honored its contract, which allows Snopes’ parent company Bardav to move its web development, CMS, and other services away from Proper Media if it decides to terminate its contract.

Meanwhile, several Proper Media founders relocated to Puerto Rico, which Green said is part of a tax avoidance scheme, and which Kronenberg said is a business development strategy.

Mikkelson claimed that Proper Media was regularly late with sharing its ad revenue with Snopes, and has not shared any revenue with the site since February, several weeks before Mikkelson gave notice to terminate Snopes’ contract with Proper Media.

A court is set for August 4 to hear competing motions from Proper Media and its two majority equity holders and Mikkelson and Bardav. Proper Media is aiming to remove Mikkelson from the company, while Mikkelson said he is seeking to allow Snopes to stop using Proper Media for web services.

Snopes has long been a site that’s dedicated to fact-checking urban legends. Since its inception in 1994, it has grown to become one of the most prominent website to fact-check conspiracy theories and “fake news” online. Snopes formed a partnership last year with Facebook to begin vetting some viral news stories to ensure that Facebook’s newsfeed become more accurate.

ICE deports prominent Irishman after appearing on television, immigrant communities anxious https://briefnews.eu/ice-deports-prominent-irishman-after-appearing-on-television-immigrant-communities-anxious/ https://briefnews.eu/ice-deports-prominent-irishman-after-appearing-on-television-immigrant-communities-anxious/#respond Fri, 07 Jul 2017 05:50:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ice-deports-prominent-irishman-after-appearing-on-television-immigrant-communities-anxious/ The deportation of a well-known Irishman on an expired visa sparked outrage from immigrant communities who fear federal immigration officers are now targeting all undocumented immigrants, not just those convicted of serious crimes.

John Cunningham, 38, was deported to Ireland Wednesday night after US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers showed up at his home on June 16.

Federal immigration officials called Cunningham an “enforcement priority” since he had overstayed his 90-day visa by more than 18 years.

“His significant overstay was cause and reason enough,” ICE spokesman Khaalid Walls said, according to the Associated Press. “Someone who overstays a visitor visa is flagrantly violating the granted benefit.”

Cunningham has been in ICE custody since the time of his arrest a month ago. Officials said he was not entitled to a hearing under the terms of his visa.

“It’s actually imprisonment. We use the word ‘detention’ but these detention centers are prisons. It’s hard to prepare yourself to think you’ll get home and then the next day you’re in prison,” Ronnie Millar, the executive director of the Irish International Immigrant Center in Boston, said, as reported by the Dorchester Reporter.

Cunningham’s arrest and deportation sparked outrage among the Irish community in Boston, which is estimated to house 12,000 of the nation’s 50,000 undocumented Irish. Cunningham was a prominent and well-liked member of the community and the chairman of the local Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), which organized Irish sporting competitions for young people.

“If they’ll go after John Cunningham, they’ll go after anybody,” Millar, told the Boston Globe. “John is so well-known and so well-liked. If John Cunningham is not safe, no one is safe.”

According to President Donald Trump’s “Enhancing Public Safety in the Interior of the United States” executive order, federal immigration officers should prioritize deportations for immigrants who have been charged or convicted of a crime.

Cunningham had a warrant for his arrest for failing to show up in court to settle a $ 1,300 dispute with a customer.

“You would think a guy like him, with no criminal convictions, would not be a priority,” Chris Lavery, Cunningham’s lawyer, told the Boston Globe.

Before being arrested, Cunningham appeared on Irish national broadcaster RTE to share his experiences of living as an undocumented immigrant in Trump’s America.

“When you’re young, it’s all great, but the years go fast,” Cunningham said in the interview, according to the New Boston Post. “And then all of a sudden you end up with commitments here, you have a home, your job, and your work — it just becomes your home.”

(Reuters) – President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and adviser, Jared Kushner, has hired a prominent trial lawyer to help represent him in inquiries linked to Russia, the New York Times reported on Monday citing another member of his legal team.

Kushner took on Abbe D. Lowell, the newspaper said, joining other senior administration figures including U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Vice President Mike Pence and Trump himself in hiring private attorneys.

The White House has come under increased scrutiny since Department of Justice Special Counsel Robert Mueller and a number of congressional committees launched investigations into whether there were ties between Russia and Trump’s 2016 election campaign team.

Trump and his key aides have repeatedly denied any collusion with Moscow.

Mueller is examining Kushner’s meetings with the Russian ambassador and a Russian banker as part of a broad enquiry, the New York Times said. But there are no signs that Kushner is the target of an investigation and Kushner has promised to cooperate, the newspaper added.

The 36-year-old Kushner, a real estate developer with no previous government experience, had at least three previously undisclosed contacts with the Russian ambassador to the United States during and after the 2016 presidential campaign, seven current and former U.S. officials told Reuters in May.

When Mueller became special counsel in May, he left a job at WilmerHale, a legal firm that also employs another lawyer for Kushner, Jamie Gorelick.

“When Bob Mueller left WilmerHale to become special counsel and three of our colleagues joined him, we asked Mr. Kushner to get independent legal advice on whether to continue with us as his counsel,” Gorelick said in a statement to the Times.

“He engaged Abbe Lowell to advise him and then decided to add Mr. Lowell to the team representing him in the various inquiries into the Russia matter,” she said.

Trump on Monday demanded that investigators apologize for looking into Russian interference and possible collusion with his election campaign, accusing predecessor President Barack Obama of having “colluded or obstructed,” but he did not provide evidence.

Russia has said it did not interfere in the vote.

New Orleans is starting to remove prominent Confederate statues and monuments https://briefnews.eu/new-orleans-is-starting-to-remove-prominent-confederate-statues-and-monuments/ https://briefnews.eu/new-orleans-is-starting-to-remove-prominent-confederate-statues-and-monuments/#respond Mon, 24 Apr 2017 08:19:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/new-orleans-is-starting-to-remove-prominent-confederate-statues-and-monuments/ Monument Confederate Robert E. Lee Statue New Orleans LouisianaREUTERS/Jonathan Bachman

Workers in New Orleans began removing the first of four prominent Confederate monuments early Monday, the latest Southern institution to sever itself from symbols viewed by many as a representation racism and white supremacy.

Trucks arrived to begin removing the first memorial, one that commemorates whites who tried to topple a biracial post-Civil War government in New Orleans, around 1:25 a.m. in an attempt to avoid disruption from supporters who want the monuments to stay, some of whom city officials said have made death threats.

Workers who were inspecting the statue ahead of its removal could be seen wearing flak jackets and helmets. Police officers watched the area from atop the parking garage of a nearby hotel.

Three other statues to Confederate Generals Robert E. Lee and P.G.T. Beauregard and Confederate States of America President Jefferson Davis will be removed in later days now that legal challenges have been overcome.

“There’s a better way to use the property these monuments are on and a way that better reflects who we are,” New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said in an interview Sunday with The Associated Press.

Nationally, the debate over Confederate symbols has become heated since nine parishioners were killed at a black church in South Carolina in June 2015. South Carolina removed the Confederate flag from its statehouse grounds in the weeks after, and several Southern cities have since considered removing monuments. The University of Mississippi took down its state flag because it includes the Confederate emblem.

New Orleans is a majority African-American city although the number of black residents has fallen since 2005’s Hurricane Katrina drove many people from the city.

The majority black City Council in 2015 voted 6-1 to approve plans to take the statues down, but legal battles over their fate have prevented the removal until now, said Landrieu, who proposed the monuments’ removal and rode to victory twice with overwhelming support from the city’s black residents.

People who want the Confederate memorials removed say they are offensive artifacts honoring the region’s slave-owning past. But others call the monuments part of the city’s history and say they should be protected historic structures.

Robert Bonner, 63, who said he is a Civil War re-enactor, was there to protest the statue’s removal.

“I think it’s a terrible thing,” he said. “When you start removing the history of the city, you start losing money. You start losing where you came from and where you’ve been.”

Since officials announced the removals, contractors hired by the city have faced death threats and intimidation in this deep South city where passions about the Civil War still run deep.

Landrieu refused to say who the city would be using to remove the statues because of the intimidation attempts. And the removal will begin at night to ensure police can secure the sites to protect workers, and to ease the burden on traffic for people who live and work in the city, Landrieu said.

“All of what we will do in the next days will be designed to make sure that we protect everybody, that the workers are safe, the folks around the monuments are safe and that nobody gets hurt,” Landrieu said.

Landrieu said the memorials don’t represent his city as it approaches its 300th anniversary next year. The mayor said the city would remove the monuments, store them and preserve them until an “appropriate” place to display them is determined.

“The monuments are an aberration,” he said. “They’re actually a denial of our history and they were done in a time when people who still controlled the Confederacy were in charge of this city and it only represents a four-year period in our 1000-year march to where we are today.”

The first memorial to come down will be the Liberty Monument, an 1891 obelisk honoring the Crescent City White League.

Landrieu has called the Liberty Monument “the most offensive of the four” and said it was erected to “revere white supremacy.”

“If there was ever a statue that needed to be taken down, it’s that one,” he said.

The Crescent City White League attempted to overthrow a biracial Reconstruction government in New Orleans after the Civil War. That attempt failed, but white supremacist Democrats later took control of the state.

An inscription added in 1932 said the Yankees withdrew federal troops and “recognized white supremacy in the South” after the group challenged Louisiana’s biracial government after the Civil War. In 1993, these words were covered by a granite slab with a new inscription, saying the obelisk honors “Americans on both sides” who died and that the conflict “should teach us lessons for the future.”

The Liberty Monument had been the target of a previous lawsuit after the city removed it from a location on the main downtown thoroughfare of Canal Street during a federally-financed paving project in 1989. The city didn’t put the monument back up until it was sued, and moved the monument to an obscure spot on a side street near the entrance to a parking garage.
