Ridley Scott admits that he was “wrong” on Prometheus.

The much-maligned Alien prequel was a stumbling block for the renowned director, who had planned to launch a second coming for his Alien franchise to flesh out the origins and backstory of the terrifying Xenomorphs. His upcoming film Alien: Covenant continues the thread that Prometheus started, taking place long before the 1979 Alien film. Scott had intended to make at least four more sequels which would lead up to or take place concurrently as the original Alien movie. But negative reactions to Prometheus has him rethinking his plans.

Following the backlash to Prometheus, which explored astronauts’ discovery of an ancient humanoid civilization whose actions led to the birth of the first Xenomorph, VFX supervisor Neil Corbuld said that Scott “listened to the audience” and learned “that they want more aliens” in the upcoming movie.

Hence Alien: Covenant becoming a semi-remake of the original Alien, bringing the series back to its sci-fi horror roots — and even bringing back forgotten elements from the first movie like the spaceship’s MUTHUR A.I.

In an interview with Yahoo, Scott spoke about the negative reactions to Prometheus and how that changed his approach for Alien: Covenant.

“….we discovered from it that [the fans] were really frustrated. They wanted to see more of the original [monster] and I thought he was definitely cooked, with an orange in his mouth. So I thought: ‘Wow, OK, I’m wrong. The fans, in a funny kind of way — they’re not the final word — but they are the reflection of your doubts about something, and then you realize ‘I was wrong’ or ‘I was right.’ I think that’s where it comes in. I think you’re not sensible if you don’t actually take [the fans’ reaction] into account.”

There’s probably something to be said here about fans dictating art, or whether the artist should prioritize their creativity over criticism, but I trust Scott as a director to marry his vision with fan demands.

Those fan demands are already making an impact on Scott’s planned Alien: Covenant franchise, which he originally planned to last for up to three more sequels. Plans for the next film, tentatively titled Alien: Awakening, are already in progress, with Scott planning to start production in no less than 14 months. But Scott will probably dial back the number of sequels after that, giving a noncommittal response when asked by Yahoo:

“I don’t know. [I’ll make] maybe two more [films], or maybe one more, I don’t know.”

Alien: Covenant hits theaters May 19, 2017.

At the end of Prometheus, Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) either makes a very brave or very foolish decision. After the doctor’s search for humanity’s creators goes horribly wrong, leaving most of the Prometheus crew dead, she continues to seek answers. Based on Shaw’s lack of presence in the promotional materials for Alien: Covenant, her minimal role in the film, and the fact she’s with David (Michael Fassbender), we’re presuming her post-Prometheus mission doesn’t go so well.

In a new Alien: Covenant prologue, titled “The Crossing,” you can see Elizabeth and David hitting it off on their journey.

David has plenty of contempt for his makers. He doesn’t think highly of humanity, but he respects Shaw (and her survival instincts) more than her now dead Prometheus crew members. At the end of the Prometheus, the two of them take off on an Engineer’s vessel, which is the sole setting of the new prologue.

David did kill Elizabeth’s boyfriend (Logan Marshall-Green), which, yes, did lead to Elizabeth being impregnated with a deadly little alien – it’s all good now between her and David. The two get along just fine in the new Alien prologue, which has quite an ending:

Alien: Covenant Prologue

Those high-angle and low-angle shots of David get him to look almost like a God. Presumably, this is the planet the Covenant crew are going to, so perhaps David is the one who laid waste to it before their arrival. He seems to be up to no good on the planet, possibly experimenting and, maybe as he appears in this prologue, playing God.

The prologue is a reminder of how fantastic Michael Fassbender is as David. He’s sinister and yet sometimes childlike. David is part T. E. Lawrence, part Roy Batty, but all Michael Fassbender. Does the droid grow closer to Elizabeth in the prologue, or is he playing her for whatever plan he has up his sleeve? We’ll know come May 19th, once Alien: Covenant hits theaters.

Here’s another look at the film, courtesy of HBO, which features a bold claim from Fassbender:

Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created with Alien: Covenant, a new chapter in his groundbreaking Alien franchise. The crew of the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world. When they uncover a threat beyond their imagination, they must attempt a harrowing escape.

Alien: Covenant stars Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, Demián Bichir, Carmen Ejogo, Amy Seimetz, Jussie Smollett, Callie Hernandez, Nathaniel Dean, Alexander England, Benjamin Rigby, and James Franco.

P.S. Happy Alien Day, everybody!

A new Alien: Covenant prologue connects the film to Prometheus https://briefnews.eu/a-new-alien-covenant-prologue-connects-the-film-to-prometheus/ https://briefnews.eu/a-new-alien-covenant-prologue-connects-the-film-to-prometheus/#respond Wed, 26 Apr 2017 19:47:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-new-alien-covenant-prologue-connects-the-film-to-prometheus/

20th Century Fox has released a new clip from Alien: Covenant and it shows off how the film connects to the last entry in the franchise, Prometheus. While the movie’s trailers have gone to great lengths to make viewers forget about Scott’s disappointing side film, this clip shows that Prometheus will have a role to play in this year’s film.

This is the second prologue that we’ve seen for Alien: Covenant. In February, the studio released a clip that introduced us to the colonists bound for this film’s planet, which happens to also be home to the android known as David, who we last saw as a disembodied head in the last film. It serves as a foreboding look at what we can expect from the next entry, including a callback to one of the franchise’s most iconic moments.

This new clip is designed to bridge the gap between this film and Scott’s underwhelming side entry for the franchise. Prometheus ended with the entire expedition to LV-223 getting killed off, save for David, and the expedition’s archeologist, Elizabeth Shaw. They escaped the world by commandeering the Engineer’s ship, and Shaw explains that she doesn’t want to go home: she wants to look for the Engineer’s homeworld.

That’s pretty much what happens in this clip: we see Shaw reattach David’s head to his body and their work to fix the ship and figure out the location of the Engineer’s homeworld. David puts Elizabeth into stasis for the journey, and he is left with plenty of time to learn more about the advanced aliens, as well as the ship’s deadly cargo. The clip closes with the two arriving at what’s presumably the Engineer’s homeworld, and David’s poised to drop a whole lot of canisters on them. As we saw in Prometheus, this isn’t going to go well. There’s a lot of material crammed into just a couple of minutes, and I can’t help but wonder if this is what the film would have been, had the reaction to Prometheus been a bit more positive.

Alien: Covenant will hit theaters on May 19th.

Arrow Recap: The Chase Is On, as Prometheus Arc Shifts Into High Gear https://briefnews.eu/arrow-recap-the-chase-is-on-as-prometheus-arc-shifts-into-high-gear/ https://briefnews.eu/arrow-recap-the-chase-is-on-as-prometheus-arc-shifts-into-high-gear/#respond Thu, 16 Mar 2017 01:43:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/arrow-recap-the-chase-is-on-as-prometheus-arc-shifts-into-high-gear/ The unmasking of Prometheus, almost as if with the flick of a switch, got The CW’s Arrow back on track in a big way this Wednesday.

Wasting no time since we the audience became privy to who is beneath that gauzy mask, Arrow looped in Oliver by sending him to a heavily CGI’d monastery where Talia has erected a Mini Parbat. Confronted there by her onetime padawan, she cops to training Adrian Chase for his mission of vengeance, if only because Oliver felled her (admittedly estranged) father, Ra’s. Yes, I’m an al Ghul she reveals.

Alas for Oliver, but great in the name of dramatic tension, there is precious little he can do with that intel, as he quickly learns upon demanding face time with the D.A. after blinking himself back to Star City. After all, Adrian has Susan held hostage… somewhere. So to kill Adrian would be to kill Susan, and, as later reiterated later, and often, it would basically kill Oliver.

What follows is a game of… well, Oliver isn’t exactly sure, though he is repeatedly reminded, sometimes verbally, that he is 10 steps behind his cunning adversary. Literally everyone is fit to be tied, including Lance and Rene as they lock horns with Prometheus mild-mannered alter ego within the halls of City Hall. Even when they get the location of Susan’s whereabouts (thanks to Felicity’s sketchy Helix hook-up), they are only met by bombs (for Dinah and Rene) and beatdowns. Oliver thinks he has an ace up his sleeve, when Diggle arrives with Adrian’s wife Doris in tow, aghast to learn of the hub’s extracurricular activities. But rather predictably — but still damn cold — Adrian guts her, lest she be used as leverage. As Dig runs her outside for help, Oliver gets into an extended fight with Adrian and eventually gains the upper hand… only to get taken down by an arrow from Talia al Ghul.

The episode closes with Oliver held captive in a cellar somewhere, shackled, as Talia gloats (throwing Oliver’s taunted about sure-to-be-disappointed fathers right back in his face) and Adrian reveals what game is at hand: just as Oliver helped him discover who he truly is, Adrian will now do same for Oliver. Which is a bit psycho-babbly of a game for my liking, but let’s wait and see how it actually manifests itself. Maybe there’s a thimble token?

Elsewhere in the episode:Arrow Recap Season 5 Episode 16

* As mentioned above, Felicity laid eyes upon Helix’s impressively appointed HQ — only to be told there is a price for admission. So no, she can’t just use them and their gizmos for her pet projects; she needs to offer some pro quo for every quid. To that end, she helps them hack into a DHS drone, which raises all kinds of questions and eyebrows from Curtis. But for right now, whatever helps them find their latest missing friend, right?

* Felicity was able to deflect Oliver’s own concern about her welfare and the secrets she is keeping by producing Adrian’s real name, Simon Morrison. Oliver then tried to do an end run on Chase by tasking Pike with investigating the D.A.’s fradlent identity, but that only got the captain stabbed into a coma. (Hope he doesn’t end up like this.)

* Surely met by cheers from some out there, Oliver at one point uttered, “I never should have gotten involved with Susan. I don’t know what I was thinking.”

* In flashbacks, Oliver introduced a skeptical Anatoly to his hooded, gravely voiced alter ego as they launched an assault on Gregor at his ice rink HQ. It mainly served to have Gregor echo Adrian Chase’s warning, that to kill him is for Oliver to kill himself.

Arrow's David Ramsey Previews the End of 'Sad Diggle,' Return of OTA Moments and Spartan vs. Prometheus https://briefnews.eu/arrows-david-ramsey-previews-the-end-of-sad-diggle-return-of-ota-moments-and-spartan-vs-prometheus/ https://briefnews.eu/arrows-david-ramsey-previews-the-end-of-sad-diggle-return-of-ota-moments-and-spartan-vs-prometheus/#respond Wed, 08 Feb 2017 17:13:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/arrows-david-ramsey-previews-the-end-of-sad-diggle-return-of-ota-moments-and-spartan-vs-prometheus/ Tonight on Arrow (The CW, 8/7), John Diggle aims to embrace his (latest return to) freedom and a shinier/happier self, only to discover that one of his teammates is heading down a dark path.

TVLine invited David Ramsey to preview Diggle’s vengeance against General Walker, his concerns about Felicity, a personal face-off with Prometheus and more.

TVLINE | Youre out from behind bars, again. Can we keep it that way?
No, let’s make it three times! How about I just go back in?

TVLINE | I joked to Wendy Mericle that when you learned of Dig getting thrown back into prison, you must have been like, “Really?”
Yeah, a little bit. A little bit. But you gotta run with that. That was a bit of a loose end with that character, in terms of the general. And it was a great way of using that to torture Oliver, to show Oliver that [Prometheus] has control, that he can make his life into whatever he wants to make it. But I’m out now!

TVLINE | What is Diggle’s mindset now that he has been sprung, with regards to Walker? To deliver what is due the general?
I think so. And not just that, but he’s full throttle with the team now. We’ve seen “internal, sad Diggle” for long enough — but for good reason. It isn’t every day that your dead brother comes back to life, who you then kill! Also, there’s a direct line between his choice to trust Andy and the death of the Canary. ArrowTheres a straight line there, so his grief and guilt was well-placed. But I think he’s on the other side of that now. Now it’s time to get back to business, and he does. It’s about getting Prometheus, and for this [week’s] episode particularly there’s a crisis in terms of what Felicity is doing. Diggle will call Felicity out on where she’s going, emotionally and morally.

TVLINE | With regards to the dark net and her new Helix buddies?
That’s correct. Who are they? Who are these people? Obviously that’s a running theme on our show, the team members helping others who can’t see through the fog. There are blinders, as Felicity called them when Oliver was helping Black Siren,  trying to find redemption. That theme is repeated with Diggle and Felicity, as she taps into her dark side, the way John did last season, the way Oliver does every Wednesday, to try to find a way of gaining an edge for the team. Diggle is the one that calls her out on that, for good reason.

TVLINE | Wendy said that coming ut of his latest ordeal, Diggle won’t have the same level of fatalism. So if he ends up “in a room” with Walker, how might that go down? Whats the dilemma before him?
Well, Diggle is a highly moral character, right. And I think he’s done putting bullets in people as a way of delivering justice. He’s learned from that with his brother. Se, he will see it to the end, doing whatever he can to see this man behind bars, by the letter of the law. That’s who Diggle is at this point. There’s also a new member of our team, in Dinah [Drake], and Diggle is the one that really welcomes her. He brings her into the fold and helps her get a job, get a place, with training. It’s Diggle who takes her by the hand; that’s where he is right now.

TVLINE |Why do you think he assumes that “welcome committee” role, as he did with Rene/Wild Dog?
It’s a place that he wants to go, needs to go. I don’t think it’s any secret, most people feel this way, that Diggle is the most evolved in the group. He’s had his demons, he’s fought in several wars, many tours. He’s been a civilian, he’s been a soldier, he’s been married, twice, to the same woman, he has a child. The only time we’ve seen Diggle at a place of true compromise was when he was faced with the “rebirth” of his brother, and his brother’s brainwashing.

TVLINE | Which as you said is a most incredible situation–
–that doesn’t ever happen. So we don’t really ever see Diggle shook in that sense, the way we’ve seen Oliver going back and forth with a number of things. So I think that he’s the one to [help the newcomers]. Number 1, Dinah needs a welcoming committee, someone to help her find her place. She’s still dealing with what she went through, so there’s an adjustment that she has to make and Diggle’s the one to help her through it. Same with Rene.

TVLINE | The sooner he can help these self-made vigilantes get into the right head space, the better.
And the better they can be more functional members of the team. There’s also that. That’s most important to him as a soldier.

Arrow

TVLINE | When we saw you on set in the fall, you were hoping for more “OTA” moments, with Original Team Arrow. Will we get some of those in episodes coming up?
That is the plan. We hadn’t seen much of that this season in general, and much of that is because we have new team members, and those stories facilitate the Big Bad more so than anything else. But now that John is out of jail, thankfully, you’ll see more OTA.

TVLINE | Safe to say that Adrian Chase scored some points there with Diggle?
Without a doubt. Adrian Chase is incredibly sharp, and I think he’s earned the respect of Diggle, which isn’t easy. They will be getting closer, you’ll see more of that.

TVLINE | Will we be seeing Lyla and his son anytime soon?
That’s a six-episode arc right there, isn’t it? The “new Amanda Waller” of ARGUS and the second in command of Team Arrow, married. With a child that they found out used to be a girl through Flashpoint. His wife, who has her finger on the pulse of the Suicide Squad. I mean, what does that dinner look like? For me, that’s a story.

TVLINE | Give me that on CW Seed. Dinner With the Diggles.
The Diggles! Pitch it!

TVLINE | Any other last teaser about what’s coming up?
There’s a nice little moment between John Diggle and Prometheus, in terms of a fight. It’s all about him, it’s all about finding out who this guy is and how he manipulates Oliver and the rest of the team. Showing Oliver that he doesn’t have to kill him, he can just take every piece of his life away. That’s a very interesting way that the story is told.

TVLINE | And more painful that just whaling on a guy physically.
Which he also does! It makes for an interesting storytelling, so I’m very interested to see how we stop this guy.
