After four seasons of high school — and a lengthy shooting delay due to the coronavirus pandemic — the Riverdale teens are getting ready for their last dance at Riverdale High as Season 5 premieres this Wednesday (The CW, 8/7c). And even the actors got sentimental, star KJ Apa (who plays Archie) tells TVLine. “I remember shooting those scenes, and really thinking, ‘Man, this is going to be the last prom of Riverdale, you know? Where we’re all together, and also in high school.’ So I do remember really wanting to hold onto that feeling and live in that as much as I can and be as present as I could on that day of shooting, just because I knew we wouldn’t be able to shoot something like that again.”

Riverdale Season 5 Episode 2 Archie KJ ApaIndeed, Riverdale is taking a bold step forward later in Season 5, with a time jump of seven years that picks up with the gang now grown up and at very different points in their lives. Apa admits that he and his co-stars were “pretty excited” to get a chance to leave high school behind and play more mature storylines. “I feel like this is the kind of thing the show needed to kind of freshen up all the characters,” he says, adding that “the new world of Riverdale, now that we are playing older characters, has changed a little bit.”

That might actually be an understatement, because Apa goes on to lay out in detail just how much Riverdale has changed after the time jump. “We learn that everyone kind of went their separate ways. Archie enlisted in the Army after graduation, and when he returns, after all that time in the Army, he discovers the town is on the verge of becoming a ghost town, thanks to Hiram.” So we can expect the old rivalry between Archie and Hiram to be renewed, it seems.

Archie and his high school friends all return to their hometown after years apart, he hints, “and they talk about how they can revive the town again. Archie very much takes the lead on this. He came back and saw Riverdale turning to s–t pretty much, and he’s like, ‘There’s no way I’m going to let this happen.’ So he wrangles the whole team in, and they figure out ways to revive the town, and the best way to do that is through Riverdale High.”

Hmmm, Riverdale High, you say? So can we expect to see Principal Andrews and new English teacher Jughead Jones, maybe, with a fresh crop of high school students bringing their own drama and conflicts? The future of Riverdale is looking bright after all.

Riverdale fans, grab a booth in the comments below and give us your thoughts on what’s coming after the time jump.

The Prom: 10 Questions to Ponder After Watching the New Netflix Musical https://briefnews.eu/the-prom-10-questions-to-ponder-after-watching-the-new-netflix-musical/ https://briefnews.eu/the-prom-10-questions-to-ponder-after-watching-the-new-netflix-musical/#respond Sat, 12 Dec 2020 00:46:16 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/the-prom-10-questions-to-ponder-after-watching-the-new-netflix-musical/

When it comes to Netflix’s star-studded production of The Prom, one thing’s universal: this movie is a lot of fun. And mostly for the right reasons!

Based on the short-lived Broadway musical, The Prom tells the story of Emma (newcomer Jo Ellen Pellman), an Indiana high schooler who isn’t allowed to attend the dance with her girlfriend Alyssa (Hamilton‘s Ariana DeBose). Well, that’s part of the story, at least. The movie is mostly about a quartet of washed-up actors — Dee Dee (Meryl Streep), Barry (James Corden), Trent (Andrew Rannells) and Angie (Nicole Kidman) — who decide to advocate for Emma in a last-ditch attempt at relevancy.

What ensues is a musical clash of ideologies, with school principal Tom (Keegan-Michael Key) joining the celebs in their fight against sinister PTA president Mrs. Greene (Kerry Washington), who also happens to be Alyssa’s mother. The plot, it is thick!

Two hours and 17 minutes later, everything turns out OK — it is a musical, after all — but that doesn’t mean we aren’t left with a few questions. To that end, here are 10 follow-up thoughts we have about The Prom:

1. First things first: Why Corden? Critics’ biggest complaint across the board is Corden’s “offensive” performance as a gay man. Frankly, we’re surprised that Murphy — who recently brought us a Broadway production and film of The Boys in the Band featuring an all-gay cast — would put a straight man in the role of Barry, considering how much more weight a gay actor could have brought to the performance. (Bonus question: Which out gay actor would you have liked to see as Barry?)

2. Did anyone else feel like they were watching a really long episode of Glee? We swear we’re not just asking this because it was directed by Ryan Murphy. The vibrant colors, the podunk town that’s clearly getting money from somewhere, Trent’s entire backstory… it all felt extremely Glee-ful. And not in a bad way.

3. Where has Washington been hiding that voice?! If you happened to catch the former Scandal star’s performance of “Joy to the World” during ABC’s Disney Holiday Singalong, then Washington’s impressive pipes probably didn’t take you by surprise. So this one’s for everybody else: “What the what?!” Seriously, they should have written a new song just for her, runtime be damned. (Honorable mention to Key, whose last name perfectly matches his beautiful singing voice.)

4. How long did it take you to figure out that the first prom was a fake? Seriously, what gave it away for you? Was it when they cut to the real dance and it looked nothing like a high school gymnasium? Or was it when Emma’s truck was clearly the only vehicle in the parking lot? Either way, it took far too long for these characters to put the pieces together. How any of them even manage to get out of bed in the morning without hurting themselves is beyond us.

5. Did we get enough of Emma? We’re just going to say it — the story focuses too much on the Broadway actors and not enough on Emma and Alyssa’s relationship. Even after multiple viewings, it feels like they’re given the same amount of screen time as their bullies. Actually, let’s talk about those jerks for a second…

6. How are we supposed to feel about all these homophobic teens? We understand that they change their ways in the end, but we were subjected to so many musical numbers involving Emma’s happy-go-lucky bullies — from the promposals to the dance itself, and beyond — that I have to ask: Were we supposed to care about them? And on a related note…

7. For a town full of raging homophobes, wasn’t there a surprising amount of well-choreographed musical numbers? Just saying.

8. How did anyone even know that Emma wanted to take a girl to prom? Maybe things have changed since we went to high school [mumble] years ago, but we weren’t asked who we were taking as our date when we bought our prom tickets. And if they did ask Emma, what did she say? Her secret girlfriend?

9. Does the PTA really have that much power? Or any power, really? Parents, please correct me if I’m wrong, but does the head of the PTA usually walk around like they’re the mayor of the town? In her defense, Washington does technically own any room she’s standing in, but I’m talking about real life. For once.

10. Most importantly: This actually happened?! The Prom is loosely based on the story of Constance McMillen, a Mississippi student who fought to go to prom with her girlfriend in 2010. In response to her courage, several celebrities — including Lance Bass and Green Day — pitched in to throw an inclusive prom for everyone. Is it not wild (and heartbreaking) to think that was just 10 years ago?

OK, your turn to talk: What did you think of The Prom? And which burning questions (rhetorical or otherwise) would you add to our list? Grade the movie, then drop a comment below.

The Prom, Ryan Murphy’s Netflix Musical, Sets December Premiere Date https://briefnews.eu/the-prom-ryan-murphys-netflix-musical-sets-december-premiere-date/ https://briefnews.eu/the-prom-ryan-murphys-netflix-musical-sets-december-premiere-date/#respond Sun, 13 Sep 2020 18:34:27 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/the-prom-ryan-murphys-netflix-musical-sets-december-premiere-date/

Prom season is kicking off a few months early.

Ryan Murphy took to social media Sunday to announce the official release date for his upcoming film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, The Prom. The movie, which stars Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman, will hit the streamer on Friday, Dec. 11.

The executive producer and director wrote on Twitter, “Let Netflix take you to The Prom you didn’t get this year,” in a nod to the heaps of events cancelled by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Prom, which opened on Broadway in November of last year, centers on four down-and-out theater actors — played by Streep, Kidman, Andrew Rannells and James Corden — who head to Indiana, where they help a teen (Jo Ellen Pellman) whose prom was cancelled when she tried to bring her girlfriend as her date. The cast also includes Kerry Washington, Keegan-Michael Key and Ariana Debose.

In announcing the project, Murphy said, “The Prom is one of the most uplifting, heartfelt and special musicals I have ever seen on Broadway. It’s truly an original that celebrates the underdog and says in a loving spectacular way that LGBTQ rights are human rights. I feel a special connection to it because it’s set in Indiana, and that’s where I grew up, too.”

Producers Bill Damaschke, Dori Bernstein and Casey Nicholaw, songwriter Matthew Sklar and book writers Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin are also on board.

Riverdale Boss Teases Season 5 With Cheryl and Toni Prom Night Photo https://briefnews.eu/riverdale-boss-teases-season-5-with-cheryl-and-toni-prom-night-photo/ https://briefnews.eu/riverdale-boss-teases-season-5-with-cheryl-and-toni-prom-night-photo/#respond Wed, 19 Aug 2020 11:59:25 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/riverdale-boss-teases-season-5-with-cheryl-and-toni-prom-night-photo/

It’s been a long year, Riverdale fans… but prom is just around the corner.

The CW teen drama’s showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa posted a photo on Instagram on Tuesday from the upcoming Season 5’s prom episode, with Madelaine Petsch’s Cheryl and Vanessa Morgan’s Toni dancing and smiling together. (Red really is Cheryl’s color, isn’t it?) Aguirre-Sacasa confirmed that Riverdale High’s senior prom will be “our first episode back” (aka the Season 5 premiere) and added: “Rest assured, ALL the queens will [be] reigning SUPREMELY next season!”

Riverdale had to cut Season 4 short due to the global coronavius pandemic, with the final three episodes — including the teens’ prom and graduation — being pushed to the start of Season 5, which is set to debut on The CW in January. In a tweet on Tuesday, Aguirre-Sacasa announced that the Riverdale production offices are open, “and we are in pre-production on Season 5.” (Filming hasn’t gotten underway yet, though; the above photo is from the original Season 4 shoot that was cut short.)

The prom and graduation episodes are “big, emotional episodes,” the EP told TVLine back in May when the Season 4 finale aired, “and there’s a lot of stuff with the characters that we’re still playing out, so it felt like maybe what we’ll do is start with the last three episodes. After being with the kids at the high school for four years, you kind of don’t want to take graduation away from them. So what we’re doing is picking up right where we left off for the first three episodes.” Riverdale will then do a significant time jump several years forward, TVLine reported first back in May, picking up with Archie and the gang after high school.

And about that “ALL the queens… reigning SUPREMELY” quote: Morgan made headlines in June by calling out Riverdale writers for reducing Black characters (including Toni) to mere “sidekicks” on the show. Aguirre-Sacasa responded by apologizing and vowing to “do better to honor her and the character she plays… as well as all of our actors and characters of color.”

Drag Race All Stars Recap: Which Prom Queen Was Snatched From the Game? RELATED STORIES

The highly anticipated Snatch Game of Love finally arrived on Friday’s Drag Race All Stars, even if there wasn’t much love to be felt in the workroom. From some shady predictions to a possible conspiracy, the real challenge was being played behind the scenes.

It all began with the dramatic Ru-veal that everyone voted for Mayhem Miller to be sent home — including Mayhem. “You never give up on your dreams!” Shea Coulee fumed. Miz Cracker then shifted the conversation to a discussion about the season’s top three, asking her fellow queens to weigh in with any clear frontrunners. Based on performance, Cracker was named the likely winner, with Jujubee and Shea following closely behind. (As I’ve said, I agree with those queens being the top three, but I’m not sure I’d put them in that order.)

Going into the Snatch Game, the queens’ emotions were all over the map. Self-described “power bottom” India Ferrah was feeling the pressure, promising the viewers, “I still have a ton of tricks up my sleeves… and my pant slit.” Cracker, meanwhile, was arguably too cocky. “Even if I bottom today, y’all can’t get rid of me,” she said. “I just won!” And speaking of being all over the map, that’s probably the best phrase to describe the outcome of this Snatch Game. Let’s see how the final six queens fared:

JUJUBEE (EARTHA KITT) | Fully aware of this iconic actress’ place in Snatch Game herstory (previously done by Chi Chi DeVayne and Valentina), Jujubee made the conscious decision to “stand out by serving up this piece of p–sy.” I’m not even sure what she meant by that, but I feel like it’s exactly what she ended up giving us. Her voice was spot-on, her mannerisms were hysterical and she played off other contestants surprisingly well. (I especially enjoyed when she called out Blair St. Clair’s awkward, joke-free Ellen DeGeneres rants: “Back in the day, we called this white noise.”)

SHEA (FLAVOR FLAV) | What else is there to say? Shea became Flavor Flav in this game. A mind-blowing 180 from her previous Snatch Game character (she recognizes that Naomi Campbell was a “safe” choice), Shea’s take on this musician-turned-reality icon was so good, it was almost frightening. The voice, the physicality, the “14-inch… clock” joke. It was just perfection.

ALEXIS (WALTER MERCADO) | Much like guest judge Jeffrey Boweyer-Chapman, I have no frame of reference for who Walter Mercado is, but I feel like I know him intimately after watching Alexis’ fully realized portrayal. I loved the way she handled Cracker accidentally stealing one of her questions (“It was my question, dumb bitch!”), one of several cutting interactions with her fellow contestants. Sure, she relied a little too heavily on the old “I didn’t see that one coming” routine, but it was giving me Jaida Essence Hall/”Look over there!” energy, so I enjoyed it.

INDIA (JEFFREE STAR) | “Many people love him, many people hate him — kind of like my life story,” India said, justifying why she chose to portray the controversial beauty mogul. I can’t say she did a poor job of portraying Star, as she nailed his signature spooky look, but I can say with confidence that she failed to find the jokes. Not a single one.

BLAIR (ELLEN DEGENERES) | As I said earlier, Blair’s portrayal of the legendary daytime host was as uncomfortable as it was completely devoid of humor. She nailed the hair and clothes, but that’s about it. And what was with that thick Southern accent? Blair has really impressed me in the acting challenges this season, so maybe my expectations were a little higher than they should have been, but this was objectively bad.

CRACKER (LADY GAGA) | Cracker remained quick on her feet in this challenge, as always, but this may have been the most boring Gaga impression I’ve ever seen. Why would you choose to portray an eccentric musician with an endless catalogue of iconic looks… only to settle on such a basic red carpet gown?

The questionable decisions carried through to this week’s “Prom Queen Fantasy” runway, which found Cracker battling some prom night pimples, Alexis giving us quinceañera eleganza, India paying tribute to Morticia Addams, Blair serving “gender-bent illusion” in a pink tuxedo gown, Juju living out her ’80s crimped hair fantasy, and Shea giving her Season 9 elimination ensemble a Carrie-themed makeover. That last look was truly a stunner, so it was no surprise to hear Shea announced as this week’s winner, especially when you factor in her spot-on Snatch Game performance.

Then things got interesting. Shortly after Ru announced that anyone not named Shea was up for elimination (“If you’re not the top All Star, you’re in the bottom”), India decided to get something off her chest. Two weeks ago, Alexis and Mayhem allegedly tried to get India to join them in voting for Shea. (Mariah Paris Balenciaga was ultimately the one who went home.) None of the queens wanted to believe India’s story, but Jujubee raised a good point: If India was lying, that would mean she was a good actress… and she would have done better at Snatch Game. Harsh, but accurate. Alexis, meanwhile, offered this solid rebuttal: “India is the queen of stunts. She should have a show in vegas called The Stunt Queen.”

All Stars Miss VanjieAfter hearing both India and Alexis’ sides of the story, Shea took on this week’s lip sync assassin (Alexis’ drag daughter Miss Vanjie!) in a high-kicking, death-dropping display of ferocity to the tune of Madonna’s “Open Your Heart.” And after what was clearly an exhausting win, Shea admitted to the judges that India’s Ru-veal was weighing heavily on her mind. “I don’t know if I can allow someone like that continue competing against me,” Shea said, before revealing that she chose to send home… India Ferrah?! (I guess that plan didn’t work out.)

“I can leave with my head held high because I got to show all the sides of India,” the eliminated queen said on her way off the runway, also stopping to tell Shea, “I didn’t lie to you.”

Do you agree with this week’s elimination? And do you believe that Alexis conspired with Mayhem to send Shea home? Vote for the queen you would have sent home below, then drop a comment with your thoughts.

Practice pinning your corsages and reserve your limousines: Ryan Murphy is bringing The Prom to Netflix.

The American Horror Story producer is turning the Broadway musical comedy into a “movie event” for the streaming giant, Murphy announced via his Instagram on Tuesday.

“The Prom is one of the most uplifting, heartfelt and special musicals I have ever seen on Broadway,” Murphy gushed in a caption. “It’s truly an original that celebrates the underdog and says in a loving spectacular way that LGBTQ rights are human rights. I feel a special connection to it because it’s set in Indiana, and that’s where I grew up, too.”

The musical, which just opened on Broadway in November, centers on four down-and-out theater actors who head to Indiana to help a teen whose school prom was cancelled when she tried to bring her girlfriend as her prom date. Producers Bill Damaschke and Dori Bernstein, director Casey Nicholaw, songwriter Matthew Sklar and book writers Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin will join Murphy for the Netflix production.

Murphy has a number of other Netflix projects in the works under his new development deal, including The Politician, starring Ben Platt and Gwyneth Paltrow, and Ratched, a prequel to One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest starring Sarah Paulson as the titular nurse.

WATCH: Shocking moment two yachts COLLIDE during high school prom https://briefnews.eu/watch-shocking-moment-two-yachts-collide-during-high-school-prom/ https://briefnews.eu/watch-shocking-moment-two-yachts-collide-during-high-school-prom/#respond Sat, 02 Jun 2018 16:44:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/watch-shocking-moment-two-yachts-collide-during-high-school-prom/

The viral video was captured last week during a New Jersey high school prom.

While docked in Hoboken, a chain reaction in the water ended up pushing the larger boat into the smaller one.

In the video, the large boat is full of people on the very top deck.

Suddenly, it pushes into the smaller boat in front of it that is also docked.

It pushes up and damages the back of the yacht.

The smaller boat then crashes into the pier in front as well, damaging it further.

The captain can be heard yelling “I have no control” in another video of the event.

Onlookers gasp at the scene, as windows are smashed and the railings bend under the pressure from the larger ship.

The larger boat, called the Cornucopia Destiny, had 95 passengers and 11 teaching staff on it.

It is unclear how many were on the smaller boat, called the Cornucopia Sundancer.

Thankfully no-one was hurt and students were taken back to the school.

Local reports state that the prom was then cancelled and will be rescheduled at a later date.

The Weehawken Schools’ superintendent Robert R. Zywicki tweeted at the time: “Weehawken High School students disembarked the Destiny at 9:50pm.

“The students are en route to the Weehawken Elks via @WeehawkenTSD school bus.

“Students may continue the evening at the Elks until midnight.

“Every effort will be made to hold another prom before graduation.”

It isn’t the first time a boat crash has been caught on camera.

One ship was caught speeding towards a harbour that was full of people.

As they realise the ship is not slowing down, people begin to flee in an attempt to escape.

Suddenly the ship slams into the pier, causing damage as it fails to stop.

No-one was injured and an investigation was launched.

  • Riley Papile and her girlfriend Abby Creneti took their prom pictures at Taco Bell.
  • Papile, a senior at Hatboro-Horsham High School in Pennsylvania, said she chose the spot because she’s a big fan of the restaurant, she told INSIDER.
  • The couple got some weird looks while at Taco Bell, but they were having fun so they didn’t care.

Like many teens, Riley Papile wanted something special to remember her senior prom by. So the Hatboro-Horsham High School decided to enlist photographer Rachel Beck to take photos of her and her girlfriend Abby Creneti in iconic locations around their hometown.

As they wrapped up their day of picture taking, Beck surprised the couple by taking them to a final location that’s especially meaningful to them: the local Taco Bell.
