After watching the latest Star Trek: Discovery episode, “What’s Past is Prologue,” consider me mad.
Me being mad is actually a good thing! Once again, I’m irritated we have to wait a full seven days for a new episode to come out. The writing is just that tight! This episode concluded with me holding my breath again. I can’t take the stress anymore! But before I get ahead of myself, let’s establish one clear outcome of this episode…
I’ve been waiting all season for a captain to fill the void left by Georgiou. Georgiou had all of the elements that made my favorite Star Trek captain, The Next Generation’s Picard, so awesome. She was patient, stern yet fair, compassionate, and knew how to get the maximum out of her crew. She was just the best, and the space left by her absence has been hanging over the show ever since her death. I had hoped that we’d find someone to carry on her spirit and legacy, and it looks like the right person for that job is Saru.
Saru studied under Georgiou longer than Michael and while Michael quickly outpaced him in terms of daringness, Saru mastered Georgiou’s ability to responsibly wield power for good and not for gain. Do I think Michael could make a great captain? Sure. Do I think now’s her time? No. That might surprise some of you out there who have read my reviews over these past few months. As much as I love Michael, she’s just too impulsive. That impulsivity showed once again when she made one of the most careless decisions someone with Vulcan training could have made: knowingly alter the timeline by bringing back Mirror Georgiou.
But back to Saru. Saru is an officer who never acts before he thinks, unlike Michael. His ability to make calculated decisions – even calculated risks – gives him the edge. He also knows the power of teamwork and inspiration and how make both a vital part of his command. It was this episode that finally offered the cerebral think-tank atmosphere I’ve loved about other Star Trek series. It also offered an inspirational pep talk that only a true captain can make – it feels like it’s been so long since I’ve heard a Star Trek captain rally their crew the way Saru rallied his. These attributes make him worthy to carry on Georgiou’s legacy. I think she’d approve.
Now, let’s talk about Michael.
Michael knows better than to take Mirror Georgiou back with her. What can Mirror Georgiou do for Michael? She can’t become her Georgiou, just like Michael can’t be Mirror Michael. This was the first time I’ve been truly angry with Michael’s actions. Like, couldn’t you leave well enough alone, girl?
But…I get it. She couldn’t allow another Georgiou to get killed. She didn’t want to relive seeing her captain die in front of her. However, Michael put so much emphasis on remembering that each Mirror counterpart wasn’t the same person from the Prime Universe. You’d think Michael wouldn’t have let herself slide like this. Now, all she’s got is an angry Mirror Georgiou, who expected to die with honor. Since we saw Sarek in next week’s preview, I’d love to know if he’s going to chew Michael out over this rash decision. (I’ll feel bad if he does, but in all honesty, she has it coming.)
Of course, Mirror Georgiou will serve a purpose now that our crew managed to make the jump back to the Prime universe. However, now there’s another problem.
The crew jumped forward nine months in the Klingon-Federation War, and it turns out the Klingons are well on their way to winning the whole conflict. I’d like to know how they did that, since both their precious T’Kuvma and Voq are dead (or, in the latter’s case, subsumed).
If the Klingons were still able to win, does that mean Voq’s sacrifice – him turning into Tyler – was all in vain? Where did the Klingons get the advanced tech to beat the Federation? Was the Discovery really that crucial to the entire Federation’s fleet? The Federation of Planets couldn’t have been relying on one ship to take out the Klingons, right? If so, the Federation proved Lorca right in one way – they relied too much on idealism and not enough on a plan for domination.
I should temper that statement, lest anyone start thinking I’m on the Terran Empire’s side with this. It’s clear the Klingon success is, once again, an overt nod to Trumpism. Star Trek has always held a mirror to our world, and in our world, it feels like Trumpism is reigning high and low. But where there’s still even just 20 percent of a chance – just like there’s 20 percent of Federation controlled space left – there’s still room enough for unity and peace to win out. We all know the Discovery crew and the Federation will find a way to restore order (and probably even make some alliances at the end of the day). But right now, they have to get through the messy part.
I’m gonna miss ‘ol Lucius Malfoy on Star Trek: Discovery. Mirror Lorca was always circling the drain and he finally kicked the bucket in this episode, with Mirror Georgiou stabbing him through the chest with her awesome sword after an awesome battle staged by her, Michael, and the Discovery crew.
Isaacs is such a brilliant actor and it was such a treat to see him make Lorca unlikable in the truly, well, likable Isaacs fashion. Am I glad the Lorca threat is gone? Yes. Do I hope a Prime Lorca shows up somewhere? Most definitely. I don’t want this to be the last we see of Isaacs on this show. That’s a testament to his acting, but it’s also a testament to Star Trek: Discovery. You know a show is good when you miss the villains.

At the end of Prometheus, Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) either makes a very brave or very foolish decision. After the doctor’s search for humanity’s creators goes horribly wrong, leaving most of the Prometheus crew dead, she continues to seek answers. Based on Shaw’s lack of presence in the promotional materials for Alien: Covenant, her minimal role in the film, and the fact she’s with David (Michael Fassbender), we’re presuming her post-Prometheus mission doesn’t go so well.
In a new Alien: Covenant prologue, titled “The Crossing,” you can see Elizabeth and David hitting it off on their journey.
David has plenty of contempt for his makers. He doesn’t think highly of humanity, but he respects Shaw (and her survival instincts) more than her now dead Prometheus crew members. At the end of the Prometheus, the two of them take off on an Engineer’s vessel, which is the sole setting of the new prologue.
David did kill Elizabeth’s boyfriend (Logan Marshall-Green), which, yes, did lead to Elizabeth being impregnated with a deadly little alien – it’s all good now between her and David. The two get along just fine in the new Alien prologue, which has quite an ending:
Those high-angle and low-angle shots of David get him to look almost like a God. Presumably, this is the planet the Covenant crew are going to, so perhaps David is the one who laid waste to it before their arrival. He seems to be up to no good on the planet, possibly experimenting and, maybe as he appears in this prologue, playing God.
The prologue is a reminder of how fantastic Michael Fassbender is as David. He’s sinister and yet sometimes childlike. David is part T. E. Lawrence, part Roy Batty, but all Michael Fassbender. Does the droid grow closer to Elizabeth in the prologue, or is he playing her for whatever plan he has up his sleeve? We’ll know come May 19th, once Alien: Covenant hits theaters.
Here’s another look at the film, courtesy of HBO, which features a bold claim from Fassbender:
Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created with Alien: Covenant, a new chapter in his groundbreaking Alien franchise. The crew of the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world. When they uncover a threat beyond their imagination, they must attempt a harrowing escape.
Alien: Covenant stars Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, Demián Bichir, Carmen Ejogo, Amy Seimetz, Jussie Smollett, Callie Hernandez, Nathaniel Dean, Alexander England, Benjamin Rigby, and James Franco.
P.S. Happy Alien Day, everybody!

20th Century Fox has released a new clip from Alien: Covenant and it shows off how the film connects to the last entry in the franchise, Prometheus. While the movie’s trailers have gone to great lengths to make viewers forget about Scott’s disappointing side film, this clip shows that Prometheus will have a role to play in this year’s film.
This is the second prologue that we’ve seen for Alien: Covenant. In February, the studio released a clip that introduced us to the colonists bound for this film’s planet, which happens to also be home to the android known as David, who we last saw as a disembodied head in the last film. It serves as a foreboding look at what we can expect from the next entry, including a callback to one of the franchise’s most iconic moments.
This new clip is designed to bridge the gap between this film and Scott’s underwhelming side entry for the franchise. Prometheus ended with the entire expedition to LV-223 getting killed off, save for David, and the expedition’s archeologist, Elizabeth Shaw. They escaped the world by commandeering the Engineer’s ship, and Shaw explains that she doesn’t want to go home: she wants to look for the Engineer’s homeworld.
That’s pretty much what happens in this clip: we see Shaw reattach David’s head to his body and their work to fix the ship and figure out the location of the Engineer’s homeworld. David puts Elizabeth into stasis for the journey, and he is left with plenty of time to learn more about the advanced aliens, as well as the ship’s deadly cargo. The clip closes with the two arriving at what’s presumably the Engineer’s homeworld, and David’s poised to drop a whole lot of canisters on them. As we saw in Prometheus, this isn’t going to go well. There’s a lot of material crammed into just a couple of minutes, and I can’t help but wonder if this is what the film would have been, had the reaction to Prometheus been a bit more positive.
Alien: Covenant will hit theaters on May 19th.

The cross-pollination of the Disney empire will be in full effect, with a five-minute preview of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales possibly getting attached to screenings of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 when it opens in May.
And while we’re here, let’s also watch the new international trailer, which reveals a huge surprise from the movie.
Trailer Track is reporting that the BBFC, the U.K.’s movie rating board, have rated a five-minute piece of footage from the fifth installment of Pirates of the Carribean, titled “Trailer Y.”
Trailer Track suggests that “Trailer Y” could be additional movie footage or an extended scene from Dead Men Tell No Tales that could play in front of select U.K. screenings of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, most likely in 3D or IMAX screenings. Why are we guessing that this scene is the prologue to Pirates 5? FirstShowing’s Alex Billington reported that he saw “a long escape scene (with Jack)” from Pirates of the Caribbean when he attended a press screening for Guardians.
No news yet on whether this footage would play in front of U.S. showings of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but with the superhero sequel premiering in the U.K. first — on April 28, a week before the U.S. premiere on May 5 — it’s a possibility.
Wasn’t Pirate of the Caribbean supposed to end two movies ago? With only Johnny Depp‘s Jack Sparrow returning, and with the unproven Brenton Thwaites getting shoehorned into another blockbuster as the next potential bland male lead, it feels like Disney is keeping this franchise alive for longer than it’s worth. But early buzz around the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean is surprisingly positive, with critics saying it manages to capture the magic of the original film.
And the new international trailer for Dead Men Tell No Tales show that Depp is not the only returning face to the franchise.
Yes, that’s Keira Knightley, returning to the franchise and the corset that made her famous. We only see a brief shot of Elizabeth Swann, the governor’s daughter and wife of the captain of The Flying Dutchman, and we don’t know what part she’ll play in the newest film. Along with Knightley, we know that Orlando Bloom‘s Will Turner will make a return as well. It’s promising to see the non-Depp cornerstones of the Pirates series back in action again.
Here’s the synopsis of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales:
The rip-roaring adventure finds down-on-his-luck Captain Jack feeling the winds of ill-fortune blowing strongly his way when deadly ghost sailors, led by the terrifying Captain Salazar, escape from the Devil’s Triangle bent on killing every pirate at sea—notably Jack. Jack’s only hope of survival lies in the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but to find it he must forge an uneasy alliance with Carina Smyth, a brilliant and beautiful astronomer, and Henry, a headstrong young sailor in the Royal Navy. At the helm of the Dying Gull, his pitifully small and shabby ship, Captain Jack seeks not only to reverse his recent spate of ill fortune, but to save his very life from the most formidable and malicious foe he has ever faced.
Directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg from a script by Jeff Nathanson, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales stars Depp as eccentric Captain Jack Sparrow and Javier Bardem as the villainous supernatural Captain Armando Salazar, as well as Thwaites, Kaya Scodelario, Kevin McNally and Geoffrey Rush. The film sails into theaters May 26.
