Python is one of the most popular languages for coding in the world.
The majority of top U.S. colleges even use Python in their introductory coding classes: teaching students to use Python to build simple games, parse information from web pages, and even conduct language processing!
Still, many parents and students alike often wonder — how is Python actually used in companies or various fields?
Read on to learn how Python powers today’s leading industries, and plays a major role in numerous computer science disciplines.
Python is a high-level and general-purpose coding language — meaning that it’s easier to understand and can be used to solve a variety of problems!
With its simple syntax, high readability, usability across operating systems, Python is a valuable language to both learn and use for a variety of applications.
It’s therefore not surprising that Python is prevalent in not only today’s job market, but also in common technology we use everyday.
Python programming is a skill that can be used in virtually any industry, as well as in positions far beyond just software development. From industries like finance, healthcare, and insurance, to fields like aerospace to entertainment — Python-based tech is driving innovation and new solutions.
In our What is Python 101 guide, we introduced Python as well as a few of the fields Python is used in such as tech, finance, and biotech. But in this article, we’ll be taking a deeper look at even more of Python’s broad uses — specifically in the following areas:
While HTML, CSS, and Javascript may be the common choice of tools when it comes to web development, Python is also a great choice.
Web development refers to the building of websites on the internet, from static, plain text pages to dynamic ecommerce sites and interactive internet applications.
Coding is crucial in web development to build out site functions, optimize user experience, and ensure that that information is organized properly. Python’s web frameworks such as Django and Flask have become popular options for website development.
Python is a great option for backend web development, and is used by many companies today.
These open-source frameworks allow users to build web applications more efficiently due to Python’s ability to handle vast amounts of data and automate tasks. In fact, companies such as Instagram, Pinterest and Google incorporate Python in their backend web development.
Python is also a major language of choice when it comes to data science and data analysis.
In the age of big data, we come into contact with data frequently in our everyday lives, with technology such as navigation (GPS), online shopping, energy use, and wearables such as smart watches.
The average household contains around eleven devices and that number is likely to increase in the future! With so many devices, there is a vast amount of data that businesses need to process in order to provide their services.
Python-based tools are often used to visualize, process, and analyze large amounts of data.
Data science relates to processing data and inferencing trends — and Python is incredibly useful in this area due its intensive packages like scipy, numpy, and pandas.
Additionally, the matplotlib package can be used to build data visualizations. This makes Python a popular choice in fields like bioinformatics that also involve a lot of data and modeling.
These Python-based tools have become popular due to their ease of use and scalability. For example, Netflix uses scipy and numpy for numerical computing to manage user traffic across the platform.
By analyzing vast amounts of data, machine learning algorithms can find patterns and apply those patterns to make sense of future behavior.
The most obvious use of machine learning in products is recommendation systems. Companies such as Netflix, Spotify, and Youtube collect user activity to make predictions and suggest playlists and videos.
Scikit-learn and tensorflow are Python libraries that enable the use of algorithms for classification, clustering, and regression on large data sets. The high performance and extensive functionality of these libraries make them essential in any exploration of machine learning.
Machine learning is actually just one facet of artificial intelligence. AI refers to the intelligence of machines and the development of computer systems to perform human-oriented tasks such as perception or decision making.
One prominent example of artificial intelligence is in ridesharing apps, like Uber and Lyft.
Python is used in artificial intelligence for apps like Lyft or Uber. The AI system can then predict things like user demand and estimated arrival times.
Uber utilizes AI for predicting user demand and estimated arrival times (among other features) and much of this is accomplished through Python.
In addition to some of the previously mentioned Python libraries, AI functionality such as prediction models and neural networks can be created through other libraries like keras and pytorch.
Among popular programming languages, Python is one of the most diverse in its applications. Moreover, it’s deeply integrated within our everyday life as well as today’s leading companies.
The range of careers that involve Python include software engineer, web developer, data scientist, product manager, business analyst and more. Regardless of industry, companies in this technological age rely on data-driven decision making and Python is the perfect tool to do just that.
If you or your child are interested in the fields or roles listed above, then learning Python is a great choice!

The first thing that may come to your mind will be what you usually see in your vehicle just above the steering. However, that isn’t the type of dashboard being referred to here. We are referring to dashboards used by different kinds of businesses and industries for data visualization.
Dashboards display metrics which are very important in helping us understand particular areas of interest. A good dashboard has the ability to give you an understanding of events at a glance. A dashboard is characterized as a timesaver based on the fact that it displays vital information efficiently.
Most people mistake dashboards for reports, and this is a very big misconception. They see a dashboard as a report because it is displaying the info being reported on. A report is a one-time thing, can be long, and can require a lot of time to put together.
Dashboards, however, are tools for connecting to info. Unlike reports, dashboards change as the information changes in real-time. Dashboards can be used to dive into reports and extract vital information in details.

Dashboards are created for the representation of data as well as causal relationships which are already known in order to enhance monitoring seamlessly with little or no effort. A dashboard is usually displayed on a purpose-built screen and basically contains just essential data which is needed for the achievement of organizational goals as well as providing solutions to problems faced by the intended user. Dashboards are built to give you the ability to quickly monitor critical information in just a single glance. It offers sufficient contextual and analytical detail and gives you a quick way of extracting the relevant details.
This means that dashboard effectiveness relies on the quality of its design and how that design connects with the intended audience. You will find dashboards being more interactive today. However, its effectiveness is mostly determined by the level of time and work needed to get insights.
Different kinds of visuals can be used on dashboards. The truth is that your dashboard can contain anything you want it to. The dashboard might even come with a video. Check out these two usual suspects that may be seen on typical dashboards:
Gauges are one of the visuals used when it comes to data visualization and dashboards. When you think of a dashboard, this is one of the first visuals that come into your mind. Gauges are basically utilized to display actual vs. Performance targets.

In contrast with gauges, sparklines happen to be mostly preferred by data visualization professionals. Sparklines are basically small line charts and are used in displaying trends over time. Sparklines have certain features which make them highly desired by the experts. One of the reasons is that they are very good at saving space. Another reason is that they can be used to tell a story which gives the viewer a context that is very useful. They are data-intense, small sized graphics that come in a simple design. If you are looking to show data over a period of time, a sparkline can be a perfect visual. You might wonder why sparklines come in handy for designing dashboards.
The reason is that this visualization element has the ability to save both space and time. A lot of data can be packed into such small space with the addition of vital contextual info. They, therefore, provide a quick understanding of events at just a simple glance. This makes it easier to identify issues to be addressed as well as actions to be implemented.

Just how does a great dashboard design idea get realized in your web application? That is where a program or data visualization expert comes in to take your functional requirements and needs and translate them using a charting library or dashboard framework. They will be sure to consider a responsive design so your dashboard looks as good on mobile devices and phones as it does on desktops, laptops, and tablets. They can select javascript chart tools using SVG or scalable vector graphics with HTML5 to ensure the charts on your dashboards are crisp and clear even when zooming or printing. Data will be loaded from your databases and other sources and passes to your dashboard page through JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) which is a lightweight data-interchange format.

Whatever the technical tools used, the end result must be a dashboard that works for you and your customers that will help convey key metrics about your business quickly and efficiently. With an efficient modular design, you will be able to update and customize your dashboard as your business and needs grow so it can be an asset for years to come.

Last year, a group of dedicated volunteers launched Codewarz, an online coding “capture the flag” (CTF) contest originally developed as an on-site competition for colleges and training events. Paid for entirely out of their own pockets, the competition included 24 challenges—challenges that could be taken on in one of 14 supported programming and scripting languages. There were over 1,000 participants in last year’s event, with only one completing all the challenges.
The team behind Codewarz has continued to do on-site events, including a Python workshop held at BSides Augusta this year focused on tackling CTF-style problems. But the open competition is back this weekend—bigger, better, and with a whole new domain. Re-dubbed RunCode, the contest is now backed by a newly-formed nonprofit funded by sponsors.
That sponsorship has made it possible to scale the event up—RunCode will have 180 coding challenges, including security-focused ones. And now there are prizes for top competitors, including an Intel NUC kit, Raspberry Pi and Arduino kits, and a one-year VIP subscription to the Hack The Box penetration testing lab.

Twitter’s quest for video dominance isn’t confined in the US or even in the West, and its team up with a bunch of new partners prove that. At a conference in Singapore, the platform has revealed a bevy of content partnerships that would bring hundreds of hours of livestreams and other videos to the platform in the Asia-Pacific region. Just like Twitter’s deals in the US and in other places, its new deals will give users in the Asia-Pacific access to more sports, news and entertainment content.
Its teamup with Sony Music will give users access to custom content and behind-the-scenes clips from major music acts. Twitter has also signed a partnership with India’s Red Chillies Entertainment production house to produce Bollywood content with superstar Shah Rukh Khan, as well as with NBCUniversal to bring its E! programming to the social network.
To boost its sports offerings in the region, Twitter has signed deals with FMA Indonesia for UEFA Champions League highlights, Fox Sports Asia for Formula One videos and Stadium Astro Malaysia for the English Premier League. Its new teamup with Vice Media will provide APAC users access to the company’s documentaries and original reporting. Finally, its partnership with Network18 and NET TV will bring news and current affairs content about India and Indonesia, respectively, to the platform.
As you can see, the company’s content deals in Asia-Pacific echo its partnerships in other regions, including its teamup with Fox Sports for the World Cup and with ESPN for SportsCenter Live. If you’ll recall, it also landed its original Formula One deal back in April. The platform believes the shows its new partnerships will bring to the website will appeal to users in the region, enough to reach a billion video views in APAC alone by 2020. Twitter global VP for content partnerships has clarified, however, that it’s not hoping to compete with traditional media companies in the way Netflix does: “Our unique and strategic value proposition that positions Twitter as a complement, not competitor to traditional media companies, has delivered great success.”

The service has confirmed months-long rumors that it hired Spotify’s hip-hop programming head Tuma Basa (pictured at left) to become its urban music director. The music industry veteran will use his “deep knowledge” to help connect “artists and fans,” according to YouTube’s music lead Lyor Cohen (shown at right).
Basa is best known for curating Spotify’s legendary RapCaviar playlist, both fueling its popularity (over 9 million followers to date) and providing exposure to artists. YouTube is clearly hoping for a similar effect, whether it’s with its recently launched YouTube Music service or its videos. If YouTube breaks a hot new rap star or otherwise becomes extra-relevant to the urban music community, you’ll know why.
This isn’t the first high-profile poaching incident. Spotify recruited Apple Music’s hip-hop programming lead in April, for instance, and likely for similar reasons to those that prompted YouTube’s move. Streaming music services thrive on both discovering new artists and creating compelling playlists — a top curator could easily be worth the expense if they encourage millions of people to switch services.

]]>Reminiscent of a cross between Human Resource Machine and SpaceChem, Prime Mover has you transporting input values to waiting output ports, creating circuity paths and using a number of tools to alter routes and change inputs. A premium of space means you’ll need to carefully design paths so timing is perfect without resulting in interceptions or wrong turns.
In programming game fashion, your tools let you flip between paths, create gates and if-then loops by sorting incoming values by zero, positive, or negative, among other manipulations. Some can only be activated by switches, forcing you to rethink your path construction, but the most powerful tool adds another layer of complexity…literally.
Recursive circuit boards let you build circuitry within circuit boards, transforming a single tile into a complex processor. Whether your solution is functional or elegant, histograms allow you to compare your solution with other players in the quest for optimization.

It’s been six months since we learned Apple decided to get serious about producing its own television shows, but it’ll be another year before we get to see the fruits of the company’s labor. A new report says Apple’s original TV programming is being targeted for release sometime between March 2019 and summer 2019 – but we still don’t know how those shows will be distributed to audiences.
The New York Times wrote a brief profile of Apple’s attempt to enter the Hollywood fray, and while much of the information consists of things we’ve written about already, there were a few bits of info that stand out.
Apple has not been afraid to drop some serious cash to work with big-name talent. They’ll be working with actress/producer Reese Witherspoon on multiple shows, and they paid her well enough for her morning show drama with Jennifer Anison that Witherspoon was able to use that deal as a bargaining chip with HBO for season 2 of Big Little Lies. (Witherspoon’s negotiating tactics led to a $ 1 million per episode payday for her and co-star Nicole Kidman.)
We’ve written about how Apple planned to spend about $ 1 billion per year on original content, but this new report says “it is becoming clear that the company will blow well past that figure.” I doubt they’ll reach Netflix levels right out of the gate (that streaming service is dropping $ 8 billion on content this year alone), but any company that’s able to blow past a billion in spending during its first big year should be considered a force to be reckoned with.
We heard a rumor back in October that the fledgling TV player was looking to avoid nudity, foul language, and violence in its shows, and the New York Times now confirms that mentality. “Producers and entertainment executives who have met recently with Apple executives said the company has been leaning toward programming in keeping with its bright, optimistic brand identity,” the report says. The outlet assumes that to mean that Apple could “shy away from projects that are gratuitously dark or heavy on social issues”, which aligns with the earlier rumor that every show they make must be suitable for display in an Apple Store. Can Apple survive and thrive in this crowded marketplace without producing edgy content? It’ll be interesting to see if they stick to this plan in the long run or eventually decide to adopt a more lenient policy in terms of the types of shows they produce.
The report also sheds light on a couple of projects that are slowly but surely making their way down Apple’s road to the small screen. Showrunner Bryan Fuller left Apple’s planned reboot of Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi anthology series Amazing Stories earlier this year, but as the NYT puts it, “seven weeks after [Fuller’s] departure, he hadn’t been replaced.” That’s not exactly encouraging news. And though the aforementioned morning show drama that stars Witherspoon and Aniston was the first high-profile show Apple officially signed four months ago, it still doesn’t have a finished script. (A draft is scheduled to arrive sometime this week.) The 2019 timeframe for when these projects are supposed to roll out gives them plenty of time to bring that show to life, but the idea that they didn’t have a script in place yet still caused me to raise an eyebrow.
And of course, there’s still the biggest question of them all: how the heck are people going to be able to watch these shows? The latest report says Apple has still not shared that information with any of its business partners, but suggests (as many others have suggested) that distribution through Apple’s TV app could be a likely option. They also speculate (as many others have speculated) that some of these shows could end up behind a paywall that requires a subscription to access, but that information has yet to be confirmed. Since it’ll be another year – or longer – until these shows make their debut, they still have some time to figure it out.
You can check out a list of shows in the works at Apple right here.

Developer Q&A site Stack Overflow performs an annual survey to find out more about the programmer community, and the latest set of results has just been published.
JavaScript remains the most widely used programming language among professional developers, making that six years at the top for the lingua franca of Web development. Other Web tech including HTML (#2 in the ranking), CSS (#3), and PHP (#9). Business-oriented languages were also in wide use, with SQL at #4, Java at #5, and C# at #8. Shell scripting made a surprising showing at #6 (having not shown up at all in past years, which suggests that the questions have changed year-to-year), Python appeared at #7, and systems programming stalwart C++ rounded out the top 10.
These aren’t, however, the languages that developers necessarily want to use. Only three languages from the most-used top ten were in the most-loved list; Python (#3), JavaScript (#7), and C# (#8). For the third year running, that list was topped by Rust, the new systems programming language developed by Mozilla. Second on the list was Kotlin, which wasn’t even in the top 20 last year. This new interest is likely due to Google’s decision last year to bless the language as an official development language for Android. TypeScript, Microsoft’s better JavaScript than JavaScript comes in at fourth, with Google’s Go language coming in at fifth. Smalltalk, last year’s second-most loved, is nowhere to be seen this time around.
