If you’ve seen any of the recent Star Wars shows, you’ve heard the work of Respeecher. It’s a Ukrainian startup that uses archival recordings and a “proprietary AI algorithm” to create new dialogue featuring the voices of “performers from long ago.” In the case of Jones, the company worked with Lucasfilm to recreate his voice as it had sounded when film audiences first heard Darth Vader in 1977.

According to Vanity Fair, Jones had signed off on Disney using recordings of his voice and Respeecher’s software to “keep Vader alive.” Lucasfilm veteran Matthew Wood told the outlet that James guided the Sith Lord’s performance in Obi-Wan Kenobi, acting as “a benevolent godfather,” but it was ultimately the AI that gave Vader his voice in many of the scenes.

While there’s something to be said about preserving Vader’s voice, Disney’s decision to use an AI to do so is likely to add fuel to disagreements over how such technology should be used in creative fields. For instance, Getty Images recently banned AI-generated art over copyright concerns. With Jones, there's the possibility we could hear him voice Vader long after he passes away.

Since November, Uber users in nine US cities have been able to earn points and claim incentives through the company’s loyalty program, Uber Rewards. Now, customers across the country can earn the ability to, say, jump the line of people waiting for rides home from the airport, which may frustrate everyone else just enough to get them to sign up.

Uber Rewards, which launched on the heels of a similar program by Lyft, gives users an incentive to spend on both ridesharing and take-out thanks to Uber Eats. Each dollar spent helps you meet one of four membership levels: blue, gold, platinum and diamond. At any level, you’ll get a $ 5 credit for every 500 points earned, and as you move up the ranks, you’ll gain access to perks like priority airport pickup, flexible cancellations and price protections.

While Uber has expanded beyond ride-sharing to including bike and scooter options, the company isn’t rewarding people who choose those modes of transit just yet. (But the personal satisfaction and health benefits that come with biking to work are their own reward.) For now, you’ll earn one point for every dollar spent on UberPool and Uber Eats; two points for UberX, UberXL, Select, and WAV; and three points for Black and Black SUV. The next step will likely be to roll this out internationally, but Uber has yet to make any announcements hinting at that.

This week, Tesla introduced a new wall charger that can plug directly into a NEMA 14-50 standard American wall outlet. The new wall charger is similar to the company’s second-generation mobile wall connector but with the ability to provide 40 amps (9.6kW) to long-range Model S, X, and 3 vehicles. Mid- and standard-range vehicles still charge at 32 amps, much like the mobile wall connector.

The new wall charger can be used wherever an applicable wall charger exists, without the need for an electrician to come out an install the charger. Both the new wall charger and the electrician-installed wall connector cost $ 500, but the new charger that is NEMA 14-50-compatible obviously won’t require electrician’s fees if you have an accessible outlet. Still, Tesla recommends its electrician-installed wall connector “for new installations.”

The Tesla Wall Connecter offers the fastest charging speeds, but according to Tesla, this new wall charger is 25 percent faster at charging than the Gen 2 mobile wall connector. As far as charging speed, it seems to sit somewhere between the high-end hardwired charger and the mobile charging kit.

Valery Ryumin has had a long career as an engineer and cosmonaut: he was twice named a Hero of the Soviet Union, a veteran of two long stints on the Salyut-6 space station (remarkably, he spent 175 days there in 1979 and returned again in 1980 for another 180 days), and eventually a crew member of space shuttle Discovery‘s mission to the Mir space station in 1998.

Now 79 years old but still a respected figure in Russian space circles, Ryumin has given a highly critical interview about the present and future of Roscosmos and the Russian space program. The interview was published on Pravda.ru, a pro-government news website with a nationalistic bent that is not related to the long-time newspaper of the Russian Communist Party, Pravda. It seems significant that this publication would feature such a negative view of Russia’s activities in space.

As part of the interview, Ryumin is asked about Russia’s stated plans to send humans to the Moon in the 2020s. “On what money?” he replies. “In recent years, the leaders are blowing more smoke than doing anything substantive.” (A translation of the interview was provided to Ars by Robinson Mitchell.)

NASA announced Thursday that it has partnered with nine companies to enable the delivery of small scientific payloads to the lunar surface. No money was exchanged up front, but the space agency said these companies would now be eligible to “bid” for contracts to deliver select experiments to the Moon.

The space agency made the lunar announcement with considerable fanfare, devoting an hour-long ceremony to questions from children, an astronaut in Houston bouncing on a wire to simulate lunar gravity, and other activities.

Beneath the pomp and circumstance, however, two factors stood out. One is that the science arm of NASA, the Science Mission Directorate, is getting more involved in funding lunar science experiments through this program. “The Moon is full of secrets that we don’t know yet,” Thomas Zurbuchen, who oversees scientific activities for NASA, said Thursday. And secondly, the government is taking a concrete step toward funding commercial activities on the Moon.
