Monday’s episode of The Good Doctor not only addressed racial profiling in modern medicine, but forced one of the residents to take a good, hard look in the mirror and confront her own preconceived notions. After misdiagnosing a patient, Claire made a disconcerting discovery about certain practices at the hospital. When it comes to pain management, data showed that St. Bonaventure has been under-treating African American and Latinx patients by a considerable margin, and they’ll need to do better. The numbers were crunched after Claire used pattern-processing techniques taught in medical school to treat Zara Norton, a 34-year-old Black female who was rushed to the ER following a cardiac event. Based on her preconceived notions about this “loud and messy” patient, Claire administered an ACE inhibitor to bring down Zara’s blood pressure. Because the result supported Claire’s hypothesis that this was a standard case of hypertension commonly diagnosed among Black women, she nearly missed a diagnosis of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, where the heart muscle becomes abnormally thick. After the surgery, Claire confronted Zara and admitted she was at fault. When Zara arrived at the ER, Claire had made assumptions based on race, not realizing that those assumptions were based on her own experience with racial profiling. “When I got to med school, people took one look at me and thought they knew who I was: ‘Black girl on financial aid,’” Claire said. “‘She must not be that smart. She must’ve gotten a lot of breaks, will probably need a lot more…’ I worked so hard to prove them wrong, that I wasn’t who they thought I was, that I deserved to be there, that I fit in… When you came into the ER, loud and messy, I saw everything I have tried hard not to be. I think it made me angry, and I’m ashamed of that. And I’m really sorry.” In response, Zara told Claire that she “used to be that way,” but she got “tired of working that hard to make white people comfortable.” That’s when it clicked for Dr. Browne. And when she discussed the matter further with Enrique, the two bonded over how exhausting it had been to prove themselves and get where they are now. As for Lim: After weeks of vehemently denying that she needed help to combat her post-traumatic stress disorder, one final episode in the OR doubled as her come-to moment. Once Rio was out of surgery, Lim returned to her office and fetched a prescription from her desk. She later told Andrews and Claire was taking Sertraline (aka Zoloft) to treat her condition. What did you think of The Good Doctor Season 4, Episode 9? Drop a comment with your full review. RELATED STORIES
When Zara learned that Claire administered the ACE inhibitor based only on assumption, she asked that Dr. Browne be removed from her case. She even requested to be transferred to another hospital for her corrective procedure, but Dr. Glassman convinced her that she’d receive the best possible treatment if she stayed put. During the open-heart surgery, Andrews, Asher and Enrique faced an unforeseen complication. From the observation deck, Claire verbally intervened and saved Zara’s life.
Elsewhere this week, Lim was challenged by the unique circumstances surrounding a pregnant patient with an aggressive pituitary tumor. The patient was Rio Gutierrez, a trans man whose recent lapse in testosterone injections made it possible for him and his fiancé Eli to conceive a child. His decision to carry the child to term and undergo an alternative procedure nearly cost him his vision, but the chief of surgery saved the day. Rio would make a full recovery.
Meanwhile, after teasing a potential obstacle for Shaun and Lea in the form of second-year radiology resident Dr. Cintia D’Souza, Monday’s episode revealed the big kiss seen in the coming attractions was part of a dream sequence. Despite Park and Jordan advising him otherwise, Shaun told Lea about his work crush. Lea wasn’t fazed, but she needed to help Shaun understand that his sexy dream did not signal a problem in their relationship. In order to make Dr. D’Souza less desirable to her boyfriend, Lea exposed Shaun to the resident’s “irresponsible salad bar practices” — hence the episode’s title. Relationship crisis averted!

Three students have sued two Israeli airlines over what they claim was an ethnically profiled strip search amounting to sexual assault.
The three masters students of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem are Palestinian citizens of Israel and were on their way back from Belgrade in October 2016 when they were told they couldn’t board the plane to Tel Aviv unless they agreed to be strip-searched.
“I overheard the chief security officer tell [a woman officer] that if I did not take off my bra I will not get on the plane,” one of the girls told Al Jazeera. “I couldn’t speak. It was a shock. I completely undressed the upper part of my body. It was painful.”
One of the women fainted during the screening, which lasted two hours and was conducted by Israeli security personnel.
The students are suing El Al and Arkia airlines, alleging ethnic profiling adding that the search “went well beyond a pat-down and amounted to sexual assault.”
The women bought their tickets from Arkia Airlines, while EI AI handles security checks for Israeli airlines.
“The search was unwarranted,” Anwi Bana, the students’ attorney said. “The women were not acting in a suspicious manner and there was no intelligence suggesting that the women posed a security threat”
“Every action taken by any El Al security employee is closely monitored and debriefed. It goes without saying, that El Al does its very best to keep every security procedure respectful and tolerant,” El Al said in a statement.
The airlines have until October 20 to answer the charges, after that the court will set a trial date. RT.com has contacted both airlines for comment.
The Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) has collected the testimonies of several passengers who have experienced similar discriminatory practices at Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport.
The ACRI asked the Supreme Court in 2007 to rule out ethnic profiling at airports. In 2015, the Court annulled the petition.

In a 4-2 decision Monday, a depleted bench of Supreme Court justices ruled on a civil-rights lawsuit that was filed by a group of Muslim, Arab and South Asian non-citizens in 2002. The plaintiffs, among hundreds arrested and detained after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, accused high-level executive officials of violating the US Constitution by allowing illegal detention policies to be implemented.
The ruling reversed an earlier decision by the Second Circuit Court of Appeals that allowed claims to go forward against three former officials in the Justice Department: former Attorney General John Ashcroft, former FBI director Robert Mueller, and former Immigration and Naturalization Service Commissioner James Ziglar. The three officials risked being on the line for personal liability if the court ruled against them.
The six plaintiffs were seeking damages for alleged violations of their constitutional protection to due process. They also argue they were detained as terrorism suspects based on their apparent race, religion, or ethnicity in violation of the equal protection rights component of the Fifth Amendment.
In the wake of the 9/11 attacks, the FBI arrested and detained more than 700 non-US citizens of Muslim, Arab and South Asian heritage on immigration charges. The lawsuit charges that those immigrants were detained in harsh conditions, despite only being charged with civil immigration violations.
The plaintiffs were allegedly subjected to live in tiny cells for 23 hours a day, where they were denied access to “most forms of communication with the outside world” and were held at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, New York for three to eight months. Since they were in the country illegally at the time, all the plaintiffs were deported from the country upon their release.
On Monday, the Supreme Court decided that the suit for money damages could not proceed without authorization from Congress.
“After considering the special factors necessarily implicated by the detention policy claims, the Court now holds that those factors show that whether a damages action should be allowed is a decision for the Congress to make, not the courts,” Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote for the court.
Writing the dissent, Justice Stephen Breyer compared the detention of Muslims after September 11 to the internment of more than 70,000 American citizens of Japanese origin after the attacks on Pearl Harbor.
“History tells us of far too many instances where the Executive or Legislative Branch took actions during time of war that, on later examination, turned out unnecessarily and unreasonably to have deprived American citizens of basic constitutional rights,” Breyer wrote.
Rachel Meeropol, Senior Staff Attorney for the Center for Constitutional Rights, the advocacy group that represented the detainees, said they were “very disappointed” with the court’s dismissal of their clients’ claims.
“The Court’s decision allows for high-level officials to violate the Constitution without fear of personal accountability—a dangerous message in this time of rampant state-sponsored discrimination against Muslim and immigrant communities,” Meeropol said in a statement.
Benamar Benatta, one of the plaintiffs, also called the decision “a total failure of justice.”
“It is only by holding high-level officials to account when their policies are ineffective or discriminatory that a country can properly heal and look forward to the future,” Benatta said.
The justices, however, did allow claims against detention facility warden Dennis Hasty to be argued in a lower court. The suit accuses Hasty and the facility of subjecting detainees to punitive strip searches in violation of the Fourth and Fifth Amendments.
Justices Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor recused themselves, because they dealt with the case in previous jobs, and Justice Neil Gorsuch was not on the bench when the case was argued.

Joe Williams has called out the Footy Show and one of its hosts for “racial profiling.”
INDIGENOUS former rugby league player Joe Williams has called for a host of The Footy Show to be sacked claiming “racial profiling” of an audience member.
Mr Williams called for Paul “Fatty” Vautin to be stood down and apologise after a segment in which he suggested an indigenous audience member would spend his prize money on alcohol for his family.
“Do you see how we see it we see it as racial profiling???” he said on Twitter.
“Point being, we are sick to death of being labelled as drunks — I haven’t had a beer nearly 12 yrs, when’s his? Preach positive words.”
Paul Vautin should be stood down @NRLFootyShow & made to publicly apologise to all @IndigenousX ppl. Racial profiling is racism @Channel9

The outburst came after a segment on the show called Pass the Pesos in which Mr Vauntin, dressed in a Mexican outfit, handed a $ 6,600 cheque to Mr Romelo.
He then said: “All of your relations in Cairns just went ‘how good, I can’t wait until he gets back, we’re having a drink’.”
The comment was met with silence in the studio while Mr Romelo looked at him blankly. Mr Vautin quickly moved to change the topic but the issue was picked up online by comedian Michael Vincent who asked for Mr Williams’ views.
A spokesman for Channel Nine defended Mr Vautin, telling Mail Online he makes the “same comment or variation on it to everyone who wins that competition no matter where they are from.”
Opinions online ranged from people saying Mr Williams had “taken it the wrong way” to agreeing with his calls of “racism”
I think perhaps you have really taken this the wrong way.

Good grief! This is terrible! On all levels. Cultural appropriation and blatant racism. @TheFootyShowNRLhttps://t.co/u8TzYBCUGy

If he was doing that then he needs to be panned for it. But how do we 100% know he was doing that? You’d have to ask him.

It’s not the first time The Footy Show has sparked controversy, with rugby league legend Wally Lewis joking about oral sex earlier this year, when a contestant said she would read her answer with “no teeth.”
“It always feels better that way,” Lewis replied, smiling.

At its I/O 2017 developer conference, Google today unveiled Android Studio 3.0, the latest version of its integrated development environment (IDE). You can download the new version for Windows, Mac, and Linux now directly from developer.android.com/studio. The latest release isn’t yet ready for all developers, but you can get a preview of the first feature now in the Canary channel. The big news is Kotlin support, but even if you’re not interested in that, there’s plenty more as well.
Google released Android Studio 2.3 in March. As denoted by the major version number bump, today is a preview of a big new release (work started in the version 2.4 Canaries, but Google renumbered the release because of the many significant features).
Indeed, this Canary version brings over 20 new features to the IDE:
Again, this is a very early preview of Android Studio 3.0. The good news is that you can install it alongside your stable version. That’s important because if you want to target Android O, create an Instant App, start developing with Kotlin, or use the latest Android app performance tools, you’ll need Android Studio 3.0.

“Although the [German] constitution guarantees equality, bans racial discrimination and enshrines the inviolability of human dignity, these principles are not put into practice,” the statement released by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said, following the group’s seven-day visit to Germany.
The group visited Berlin, Dessau, Dresden, Frankfurt, Wiesbaden, Düsseldorf, Cologne, and Hamburg from 20 to 27 February in order to collect first-hand information on the difficulties racial minorities face in Germany.
An alarming practice of racial profiling when police stop and search is widespread in Germany, the statement continues.
“The repeated denial that racial profiling does not exist in Germany by police authorities and the lack of an independent complaint mechanism at federal and state level fosters impunity.
“The Working Group found that racial profiling by police officials is endemic. Stop and search and controls by police are usually targeted at minority groups including people of African descent. Boys and young men experience day-to-day confrontation with law enforcement with high risk of imprisonment,” the statement said.
The group reported on violations taking place during investigations of “cases of racial discrimination and violence against people of African descent by the state, in particular by the police.”
According to the data, in 2005, an African asylum-seeker died in custody in the city of Dessau. This may have been caused by poor treatment and the use of physical force by the police, triggered by racial bias. Other examples include the death of an asylum-seeker in police custody in 2012, police shooting at an African woman at a job center in Frankfurt am Main in 2011, and the fatal stabbing of a North African woman in Dresden’s high court in front of her 3-year-old son and a judge.
People of African descent are also frequently targeted by far-right extremists, the statement added.
Germany suffers from a “serious lack of race-based data and research that could inform policy to improve the situation of people of African descent,” the UN experts noted.
The Working Group has called on Germany to come up with a national action plan to bring the situation under control. The possible measures suggested by the UN are to “undertake impact-oriented activities,”“fund African organizations working for people of African descent,” “legally recognize people of African descent in Germany as a minority group,” “increase the representation of people of African descent in law enforcement,” and others.
The roots of racism in Europe, particularly in Germany, can be traced back even before World War II, and should be taken into account as well.
“Germany’s colonial past, the genocide of the Ovaherero and Nama peoples, and the sterilization, incarceration, and murder of Black people during Nazi Germany, is not adequately addressed in the national narrative,” the experts said.
However, the German government has not yet addressed the issue nor discussed reparations with representatives of the minority groups.
The group, however, welcomed the readiness showed by the German government “to engage in dialogue, cooperation and action to combat racial discrimination” and expressed hope that their recommendations will be taken into account.
In Germany, the UN experts worked in cooperation with the German Federal and State authorities and local human rights groups.
The report, with the findings and final recommendations, will be presented to the UN Human Rights Council in September 2017.
In December 2016, the group issued a similar report on the problems of racial discrimination faced by people of African descent living in the US, where racial crimes were predominantly linked to the “legacy of colonial history, enslavement, racial subordination and segregation.”
