According to Wired, glass-maker Corning is “working on ultrathin, bendable glass that’s 0.1 millimeters thick and can bend to a 5 millimeter radius” that may be usable for smartphone displays within two years. Corning produces Gorilla Glass used in Apple’s iPhones, as well as in phones made by other manufacturers like LG, Asus, OnePlus, Nokia, Samsung, and more.

Developing Gorilla Glass that can bend or fold like the materials used for the Samsung Galaxy Fold display or other foldable phone concepts could address some shortcomings endemic to these early designs.

The folding phones you see in headlines and gadget blog galleries today rely on plastic polymers that may scratch easier or have other undesirable properties. Generally, smartphone-makers that have announced foldable phones have not allowed us to test-drive these phones, which is otherwise normal practice for traditional smartphone product unveilings. That may be primarily because the software is not there yet, but it could also be that the companies anticipate negative reactions to the plastic displays, which have not been standard in flagship phones for a decade.

LONDON — A cross-party group of anti-Brexit MPs has published draft legislation for creating a route to a referendum on Theresa May’s deal as MPs prepare to vote on the prime minister’s agreement with Brussels.

MPs including senior Conservative backbencher Dominic Grieve, Lib Dem leader Sir Vince Cable, and Labour’s Chuka Umunna are backing two pieces of proposed legislation designed to force a so-called People’s Vote.

Apple has lined up another partnership to boost its video-content offerings. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, Apple signed a deal with A24 studio, a New York-based production company responsible for movies, including the 2017 Oscar winner for Best Picture, Moonlight.

Details of forthcoming projects haven’t been disclosed, but Apple reportedly signed a “multi-year partnership” to make “independent, feature-length films” with A24. Apple has numerous production partnerships and deals in the works already, but most are for serialized shows and other video content.

For the past year, Apple has focused on gleaning talent for its original content offerings. It began with the Carpool Karaoke and Planet of the Apps series, both of which are exclusively available on Apple Music.

Chris Williams, the co-director of Disney’s wonderful Big Hero 6, is making his solo directorial debut with a CG animated film produced by Netflix. Williams is penning and directing the animated adventure movie Jacob and the Sea Beast, which Netflix will produce for release on its streaming platform.

Netflix continues to be one of the most ardent streaming supporters of animation, throwing its weight behind Disney animator and screenwriter Williams for his solo directorial debut. The streaming giant announced that it would produce Williams’ Jacob And the Sea Beast for a planned release in 2022.

The Canadian American animator has worked as a writer and story artist for Disney since 1998’s Mulan, making the leap to co-directing with 2008’s Bolt and 2016’s Moana. But Williams’ first time as a solo director on an animated film will be Jacob and the Sea Beast, which tells the “epic story of a charming seafarer who sails into uncharted waters and discovers an unlikely ally in a sea monster,” according to Netflix.

Williams said in a statement accompanying the announcement:

“Jacob and the Sea Beast is the kind of story I’ve always wanted to take on. It’s a tale of high adventure where our hero leaves the known world and ventures out into uncharted waters. As it turns out, I’m doing the same thing. I’m grateful for the opportunities provided by my former creative home and am excited to leap into a new environment. I feel a great energy at Netflix, as amazingly talented artists from a wide variety of backgrounds are coming together to build something new.”

“Chris is one of the most talented filmmakers working in animation today and his distinct voice comes through in this touching tale of ancient hunters who struggle to capture a beautiful, mythical sea creature on the high seas,” Melissa Cobb, vice president of kids & family at Netflix, added. “His is precisely the kind of grand, adventure-filled story with smart and nuanced characters that we look for in family animated projects at Netflix.”

A swashbuckling sea adventure? A new film from one of the talents behind Moana and Big Hero 6? Sign me up. Despite its box office success and multiple award nominations, I’ve often felt like Big Hero 6 is overlooked when it comes to Disney’s catalogue — it’s a gem of a film that delivers on both heart and superhero-tinged action. Williams is a name that I’m not totally familiar with, but seeing his work on Moana and Big Hero 6, I look forward to what he has prepared for us with Jacob and the Sea Beast.

Fox Searchlight Pictures, the Fox Entertainment Group distribution company which specializes in releasing independent movies, has announced the creation of a new television division called Searchlight Television. What does this new company mean for the TV landscape in the coming years?

A press release explains that the new division will make the company “a 360-degree hub for creative talent and broadening the variety of projects produced under the Searchlight banner.” Executives David Greenbaum and Matthew Greenfield will serve as the presidents of production for both the film and TV sides of the company, and Searchlight Television will “produce original material as well as utilize the studio’s rich library of feature films for adaptation in broadcast television, cable and streaming with forays into scripted series, limited series, documentaries and more.”

More Adaptations Are On The Way

While we certainly could see our fair share of original ideas make their way through this new division, the idea that the studio is looking to mine its library of movies for small screen adaptations very likely means that trend will continue. Fox Television has already turned movies like Lethal Weapon and The Exorcist into TV shows, so we’re probably not far off from a Little Miss Sunshine show.

Could Searchlight Television be brazen enough to make a The Shape of Water TV show in order to capitalize on its recent Oscar win? I hope not, but hey – maybe the deal Fox Searchlight just signed with Guillermo del Toro can extend to the TV world as well. Personally, I’d also like to see this new division take a movie with a promising premise like Whip It or The Way Way Back and mine that for its weekly episodic potential.

What Does Disney Make of All This?

I wonder what Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger and his team are thinking about this. With the deal for Disney to purchase Fox (and therefore Fox Searchlight) looming and awaiting regulatory approvals, one might think Disney would be raising an eyebrow at the idea of Searchlight launching a whole new division before that deal officially closes. But last we heard, Iger doesn’t plan to rebrand Fox Searchlight if the deal goes through. Last month, he said:

“We don’t have any plans right now to change what they do. We have every intention to maintain the business of Fox Searchlight. We think they’re in the business of making high quality films. We think there’s ample opportunity for us as a company to support those efforts.”

I have to assume that if Iger is OK with letting Fox Searchlight maintain its autonomy, he’ll be fine with Searchlight Television operating on its own as well.

Good news, everyone. The extremely funny and talented Amy Poehler is getting in on that sweet Netflix original action. Poehler will produce, direct and star in the Netflix film Wine Country. And in case you were wondering – yes, Tina Fey is involved. More on the Wine Country movie below.

Amy Poehler is one of the funniest people on the planet, yet her film career has been a little wobbly. Despite continuously killing it for seven seasons on Parks and Recreation, Poehler’s unique brand of comedy never quite transferred to the big screen. Perhaps the problem was that the comedian and actress was working with other people’s material. And perhaps Wine Country is the solution. Poehler will make her feature directorial debut with Netflix’s Wine Country. Poehler will also produce and star in the film, with a script by Parks and Rec writer Emily Spivey.

The Hollywood Reporter says “Wine Country tells of longtime friends who go to Napa for a weekend getaway to celebrate a 50th birthday.”

Rachel Dratch, Ana Gasteyer, Paula Pell, Maya Rudolph, Emily Spivey and Poehler’s long-time friend and frequent Golden Globes co-host Tina Fey will also star. That’s a whole lot of funny people, folks.

While Wine Country will be Poehler’s feature film directorial debut, she’s been behind the camera before. The actress helmed three Parks and Recreation episodes, including the fantastic season 4 episode “The Debate.” Here’s an excerpt from a Paley Fest talk with Poehler talking about directing.

Amy Poehler on Directing

I’m a big fan of Poehler’s work. I watched Parks and Recreation religiously, and was sad to see it end. I also loved her work on the Upright Citizen’s Brigade show and SNL. That said, I’ve been continually disappointed by her recent film output. I want to like the films she appears in, but more often than not I come away let down. I’m very optimistic about Wine Country, though, just because it’s clear she’ll be calling the shots on the film. Principle photography on Wine Country begins this month.

Poehler is just the latest big name to join Netflix’s constantly-growing line-up of talent. Netflix wants their original content to grow – what better way to thrive than by owning your own programs rather than purchasing them from others? In recent months, the streaming giant has signed deals with American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy  and TV mega-creator Shonda Rhimes. Comic book writer Mark Millar also joined the Netflix business last year, and a few weeks ago, indie producers and filmmakers The Duplass Brothers re-upped their previous deal with Netflix to distribute more films. Luc Besson and his EuropaCorp are also mulling over a deal, and then there’s Martin Scorsese’s highly anticipated The Irishman, which is currently filming and racking up a hefty production budget in the process. Dope director Rick Famuyiwa is also crafting a superhero movie for Netflix, with Keanu Reeves possibly starring. Netflix deals for everyone!

Fresh off his powerhouse performance in Black Panther and coming off his ascent as the internet’s latest boyfriend, Michael B. Jordan is jumping behind-the-scenes.

Jordan will produce The Liberators, a World War II drama about the all-black combat unit who helped lead to military desegregation, through his Outlier Society Productions. However, it’s uncertain if he will star in the film.

The Liberators has enlisted Jordan as its producer, according to Variety.

Based on a spec script written by Madison Turner, The Liberators tells the story of the 761st regiment in World War II, an entirely African-American combat unit whose bravery paved the way to desegregation of the armed forces.

Fittingly, the 761st regiment were known as “Black Panthers,” after the unit’s insignia. They were famous for being one of the most effective tank battalions in World War II, winning a Medal of Honor, 11 Silver Stars, and 300 Purple Hearts for their heroism. The Liberators wouldn’t be the first time the unit has been dramatized — they have been receiving the small screen and documentary treatment over the course of 50 years. However, this would be the first feature film depiction of these historic soldiers.

Jordan is producing The Liberators through his production company Outlier Society, which was launched in fall of 2016. The company hasn’t yet overseen any big feature film projects, though it made headlines recently when Jordan pledged that Outlier Society would be adopting inclusion riders in its contracts — a clause that encourages diverse hiring in front of and behind the camera.

Outlier Society Productions’ other projects include Netflixs’s sci-fi family drama series Raising Dion, a The Thomas Crowne Affair reboot starring Jordan, an untitled project with Tarell Alvin McCraney for OWN, and an adaptation of the bestselling YA book The Stars Beneath Our Feet, with which Jordan will make his directorial debut.

Jordan’s Outlier Society will be producing The Liberators with Safehouse Pictures. Warner Bros. finalized the deal for the script package late last week.

  • Former President Barack Obama is in talks with Netflix to provide shows for the streaming platform, according to a New York Times report published Thursday night.
  • The deal, which is not yet final, would bring exclusive content from Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama to Netflix’s 118 million subscribers.
  • The Obamas, still fresh out of the White House after two presidential terms, are looking for ways to cement their global legacy.

Former President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama are negotiating a major production deal with Netflix, The New York Times reported on Thursday night.

The pending deal would bring exclusive content from the Obamas to the streaming site’s 118 million subscribers. It was not immediately clear what types of content they would deliver to the site, but Eric Schultz, a former adviser to the president told the Times: “President and Mrs. Obama have always believed in the power of storytelling to inspire.”

Humans figure out whether to develop as males or females based on the presence of a single gene on the Y chromosome. But that’s just one of a dizzying number of ways that plants and animals determine their sex. A large group of reptiles, including crocodilians and many species of turtles, use the ambient temperature. If the eggs are above a certain temperature during a critical period in their incubation, the animal will be likely to develop as a female; below that temperature, you’re more likely to get a male.

And that, in a world where temperatures are rising, is a problem.

A new study of sea turtles that live near the Great Barrier Reef has found that populations closest to the equator, where the temperatures are warmest, have been producing over 99 percent females for two decades. While turtles have obviously weathered changing climates in the past, the current rate of change, coupled with sea turtles’ long life span, raise concerns about how well they’ll cope with our current warming.
