We know that Abbi is headed to Colorado to pursue her art career, leaving best friend Ilana behind in New York City, so Thursday’s finale will feature an on-screen goodbye as well. And according to stars Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer, shooting the series finale was just as emotional off-camera. “We’ve been working with a lot of people on our crew for the entire series, so it was extremely bittersweet,” Jacobson tells TVLine. But also, “everybody involved was so proud of the show and the way we were ending it, so it was very celebratory.”

Broad City Final Season Abbi IlanaThe final scene of the series was actually shot last, Jacobson reveals, to take advantage of the poignant atmosphere on set: “Usually we block shoot, and it was a little tricky, but we shot it last… It was appropriate: The way we were feeling was equivalent to the way the characters were feeling.” But it still hasn’t really hit her and Glazer yet that the Broad City era is ending, she adds: “I think it won’t be until the show has finished airing and we start writing again that it’ll kick in feeling like it’s actually over.”

Broad City‘s ending marks a new beginning for Jacobson and Glazer: They’ve signed a development deal with Comedy Central, and already have three new shows in the works as executive producers. “We’ve really earned ourselves space to make our own stuff, and we’re really excited to occupy that space,” Glazer says. But they don’t plan to star in any of those projects. “For right now, I think we have to take a break” from acting together, Jacobson says, “just because we are so associated with these two characters.”

That doesn’t mean we can’t hold out hope for an on-screen reunion someday, though. “I can’t imagine a world in which we don’t ever act together again,” Jacobson shares. “That’s the saddest part for me of ending the show, not getting to act opposite Ilana as them. It’s so fun.”

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

  • Jayme Closs, 13, has been found alive in rural Wisconsin nearly three months after a man allegedly murdered her parents and kidnapped her.
  • Former kidnapping victims Elizabeth Smart and Katie Beers said Jayme has a long, challenging healing process ahead of her.
  • They said the best way for people to handle Jayme is to give her time and space to discuss her trauma on her own terms.

CHICAGO (AP) — Katie Beers’ joy quickly turned to deep concern when she learned 13-year-old Jayme Closs had been found alive in rural Wisconsin nearly three months after police say a man shot and killed her parents then abducted the girl from their home.

“She is going to have to grieve the loss of her parents and also come to terms with the fact she was abducted, escaped and whatever (other) hell she went through,” said Beers. “And it’s not going to be easy.”

Millions of Canadians rely on surgically implanted medical devices in order to function — to do everything from walk without pain to pump blood through their veins. But a new CBC investigation reveals some devices are approved with scant scientific evidence to show they are safe and effective.

'Fantasy gone wild’ – Moscow sighs as Bellingcat claims FSB tried to influence UK visa process https://briefnews.eu/fantasy-gone-wild-moscow-sighs-as-bellingcat-claims-fsb-tried-to-influence-uk-visa-process/ https://briefnews.eu/fantasy-gone-wild-moscow-sighs-as-bellingcat-claims-fsb-tried-to-influence-uk-visa-process/#respond Sat, 17 Nov 2018 18:45:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/fantasy-gone-wild-moscow-sighs-as-bellingcat-claims-fsb-tried-to-influence-uk-visa-process/ Claims by “investigative” website Bellingcat that the FSB pressured a UK visa center to facilitate the issuance of travel permits to the alleged Skripal poisoners is a self-exposing joke, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

“Great! There are certainly no limits to the imagination of our partners,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova wrote on Facebook, commenting on another report by the controversial Bellingcat group claiming that Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) had tried to infiltrate the British visa center system in Moscow to organize entry papers for “a couple of guys who need to visit the UK.”

The authors hint that the “guys” were Aleksandr Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov, who London accuses of being Russian Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) agents, responsible for the chemical poisoning of double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury in March. The two men denied the accusations and said they only visited the UK as tourists. The GRU stated that they have never employed them as agents.

The new report includes a story by a man claiming to be “a highly proficient Russian IT specialist,” who has applied for political asylum in the US.

Vadim, as he’s called in the report, says that in 2016, when he was working at a firm that provided visa application processing services to British and other consulates, he was recruited as an “undercover collaborator” by the FSB in order to breach and compromise the British consulate visa issuance system. Of course, there were no mentioning of the names, but Vadim thought it was relevant to the Skripal affair and contacted Bellingcat.

It’s unclear how the scheme could even work as the decisions on granting visas is made in London.

“TLScontact has a purely administrative role, while all the visa and immigration issues are handled by the Home office,” a source in the Home Office told RBC.

Maria Zakharova called the UK-based Bellingcat’s investigation a “new joke” that simply includes all of the acronyms of Russian security agencies known to the authors in the same article.

“So the FSB agents helped the GRU agents get visas without checks by the British visa center… They should’ve added that the agents of the SVR (Foreign Intelligence Service) were on the lookout outside, much to the envy of the Russian National Guard,” she wrote.

Since being established by Eliot Higgins in 2014, Bellingcat has become a darling of the mainstream media, which rarely questions the authenticity of its research.

It’s not surprising as the website’s investigations, claimed to be based on open sources, are usually targeted against governments that don’t share the Western agenda, such as those in Russia, Syria, and Iran.

Many Bellingcat revelations have been refuted and the website has been repeatedly slammed for bias, questionable handling of facts, and reliance on fakes.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov previously said Higgins’ website was cooperating with Western intelligence agencies and releases its ‘investigations’ in order to influence public opinion.

Waymo’s excruciatingly gradual launch process, explained https://briefnews.eu/waymos-excruciatingly-gradual-launch-process-explained/ https://briefnews.eu/waymos-excruciatingly-gradual-launch-process-explained/#respond Wed, 31 Oct 2018 13:44:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/waymos-excruciatingly-gradual-launch-process-explained/

Last Thursday, Waymo dropped something of a bombshell: it has begun commercial operations of its self-driving taxi service. And it made the announcement in the most anticlimactic way possible. Ruth Porat, CFO of parent company Alphabet, announced the news in answer to a question during Alphabet’s quarterly earnings call.

“We moved into very early days of commercialization,” in the third quarter, Porat said. “We do now have people paying for rides.” The company subsequently confirmed to Ars that it is now charging customers directly for rides—and it has been for a few weeks. Waymo has also earned some revenue from retailers, like Wal-Mart, which offers customers the option to order groceries online and then come pick them up in a Waymo vehicle.

The news comes with important caveats, however. Waymo says that cars with paying customers still have safety drivers behind the wheel (some other vehicles are fully driverless). And the program isn’t fully open to the public—you have to be one of Waymo’s hand-picked early riders and agree to strict non-disclosure rules.

Setting up the committee to draft a new Syrian constitution is a priority, but eliminating the remaining “radical elements” in the country remains an important objective, Russia’s Vladimir Putin said at the Istanbul summit.

“While the degree of violence in Syria has been greatly reduced, elimination of all the radical elements is still an important task,” President Vladimir Putin said, speaking after the four-way Syria summit with leaders of Turkey, France and Germany. “We cannot allow the battle-hardened bandits to carry on with their illicit activities, to create “sleeper cells” in our countries, recruit supporters and spread extremist ideology and terror.”

Opening Banter: HT talks about doing an interview with a translator.

In The Mailbag:

  • Chris from Ohio writes in: What are your plans for Halloween?”
  • Britton from Louisville KY writes in: “What is the difference between a producer and an executive producer? Do they both get best picture oscars if their movie wins?”
    • Peter explains:
      • An Executive Producer is the top executive of the operations, whereas the producer is the manager of the operations.
      • The executive producer prepares the budget and acquires the investors, while the producer makes sure how the budget is properly utilized.
      • The producer hires the people with the right talents and skills for the movie where the producer himself is hired by the Executive Producer.  For the most part, the executive producer has very little to do with the hiring process, aside from hiring the producer.
      • The producer is on set for the entire production (although some films have multiple producers, technical producers and a creative producers), the executive producer is not on set all the time but is used in more of an advisory capacity, overseeing the scripts and marketing.
      • A producer is always eligible for awards in the industry, on the other hand, the Executive producer is not eligible for awards.
      • Sometimes an executive producer is more of a credit than a job.
  • Damon P. from St. Louis, MO writes in “I was wondering, since many of the team reads books that are movies or will eventually be movies, if they believe that breaking up a film into two parts (think Deathly Hallows, or Mockingjay) to make a book more complete in film format is a good thing.  So many times we hear “The book is better” why is that? Is that because the movies are limited by time, to incorporate additional plots points or anything like that. Would it be better to break a movie into two (or three) parts in order to give the source material it’s due?”
  • Leanne R. from LA writes in “Here’s a quick mailbag question that occurred to me as I was listening to the 12/21 episode: what are the best films directed by & starring the same person? (or to widen the field, including the director as a minor role? e.g., Tarantino or Mel Gibson films)”
    • Peter: Well first of all I think we should discount cameos (M Night, Tarantino…etc). Ben Affleck (Town, Argo) although I feel when hes not in the movie his films are better (Gone Baby Gone)
    • HT: Citizen Kane, Life is Beautiful
    • Chris: Unforgiven, A Star Is Born, Dick Tracy, Do The Right Thing
    • Jacob: Citizen Kane, Unforgiven, lots of Buster Keaton/Charlie Chaplin movies
    • Ben: The Outlaw Josey Wales, High Plains Drifter, A Quiet Place, Rocky sequels
  • Drew from Houston, TX writes in “Hey /Film Daily team,  I really enjoyed the conversation about becoming a film writer. I had another question taking that one step further for those on the site who write reviews: what is your process? Obviously it’s hard to take notes when watching a film in theaters. Do you create an outline before diving into a review? Does Chris take notes when reviewing tv shows or blu-rays before writing his review? Just curious to hear a little more about the process.  Thanks!”

Piers Morgan GRILLS Richard Branson for trying to overturn democratic process of Brexit https://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-grills-richard-branson-for-trying-to-overturn-democratic-process-of-brexit/ https://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-grills-richard-branson-for-trying-to-overturn-democratic-process-of-brexit/#respond Tue, 04 Sep 2018 17:33:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-grills-richard-branson-for-trying-to-overturn-democratic-process-of-brexit/

Speaking to the ITV host on Good Morning Britain, Mr Branson claimed will be a “disaster” for the UK and that Britons are “shooting themselves on the foot” voting to Leave.

But Piers Morgan grilled the arch-Remainer arguing he should feel uneasy about trying to overturn the democratic process of choosing to leave the European Union.

The ITV veteran asked: “As somebody who believes in freedom, believes in democracy – it’s been the bedrock of your entire life – don’t you feel a little uneasy that the country voted and it voted the opposite way you would have liked but that now there is a concerted effort to overturn Brexit and almost pretend the referendum didn’t happen.

“Do you not as a freedom fighter to your bones feel a little uneasy that the democratic process may not be respected here?”

The anti-Brexit business mogul claimed Britons had been misled during the June 2016 referendum campaign and deserved a second vote on the final deal reached by Theresa May with Brussels.

He said: “What I feel, and what I have felt ever since the referendum, is that the British public were misled on anything from the bus promising a vast amount of money into the NHS etcetera, etcetera.

“And none of us knew what was going to be negotiated and once this negotiation is at a close the British people should decide whether or not they like what’s on offer.

“We didn’t know what was on offer during the referendum.

“We will know what’s on offer in a few months time and I think what’s going to be on offer is not going to be very nice for Britain.

“By the GDP in Britain we were the best in Europe, we’re now the worst.

“If Brexit happens it will be a disaster for Great Britain, so I think it would be very, very unwise for business leaders to not speak out when they can see people shooting themselves in the foot.”

Mr Morgan promptly hit back arguing that if the Remain side won a second Brexit referendum it would only be fair for Brexiteers to ask for a third vote then.

He pointed out: “If we had a People’s Vote and we voted against and it reversed the referendum, would have any problem in principle if the Brexiteers then demanded a third vote?

“A sort of winner takes all. Is there anything to stop them from having the right to ask for a third vote?”

Billionaire Branson then tried to argue “Brexit would not see the light of the day” if there was another general election in five years time as Brexiteers would probably no longer be around, he claimed.

He said: “I think there if there was another election for instance in five years time, a lot of the people who voted for Brexit wouldn’t be around, there would be a lot more young people and I think Brexit would not see the light of the day.

“Young people want to be able to live and work in Europe, they want to be able to travel where they want.

“They don’t want to pay tax every time they send goods to and from Europe.

“And I think overwhelmingly people would come out in rich numbers to ensure they can stay part of Europe for generations to come.

“So I wouldn’t be fearful if there was a further referendum in a few years to come.”
