Priti Patel, 48, joined Susanna Reid, 50, and Piers Morgan, 55, to discuss the latest developments regarding the coronavirus pandemic. As the UK is in the midst of the third lockdown since the global health crisis emerged last year, the presenter wanted to clarify comments made by the Home Secretary about how people can exercise under current measures. With confusion rife over whether members of the public could exercise on their own or with others, the pair clashed on Good Morning Britain as the politician declared she wasn’t “getting muddled” with the facts.

During a press briefing she held last week, Ms Patel told the public they needed to “exercise on their own” and not use it as an excuse to “socialise” but Downing Street’s rules contradicted this statement.

Number 10 stated people can either exercise on their own, with members of their own household or those they are in a support bubble with.

Following the backlash, Reid asked the Home Secretary to add more clarity and whether she would like to refute her earlier remarks.

The politician replied: “It’s very well to take snippets of what I said out of context,” going on to add she was simply “emphasising we desperately need people to follow the rules.”

The presenter commented: “On This Morning last Thursday you said people in England should be exercising on their own.

“Now, do you acknowledge that’s not the case, that you can exercise with one other people outside of your household?”

“And the reason I say this is because I’m asking you have sympathy with people who are still a little bit confused about the rules,” Reid continued.

“And when you say they are very clear and very simple, if you yourself are getting them muddled up, that’s not the case, is it?”

The politician then proceeded to shut down her interviewer as she replied: “Well, first of all, I’m not getting them muddled up.

“When I’ve spoken about exercise and recreation, I’ve put it within that context and it is a fact, again, when I was asked questions about exercising specifically, it was about running and cycling.”

One viewer wrote: “This interview is boring, going over and over the same old stuff,” as a second added: “Let’s be clear about this, Patel was talking rubbish!”

A third commented: “She was muddled up. She came across like she didn’t have a b****y clue what she was talking about and every time she was on the ropes she looked to one side and read from pre-prepared notes. Anyone could do that #GMB.”

“Another car crash interview from a Government minister. How pathetic are this Government’s representatives?” a fourth asked.

“The lockdown rules are so simple that @pritipatel has to read them from a prompt during her @GMB interview #GMB,” a fifth posted.

According to the latest figures, another 33,355 people tested positive for COVID-19 yesterday, bringing the total number of cases since March to 3.47 million.

The number of fatalities also increased, with a further 1,610 people dying within 28 days of contracting coronavirus.

It has been explained by scientists the number of deaths will continue to rise despite lockdown having an impact on the rate of new infections.

Currently, over four million over 80s and health care workers have been vaccinated against the virus.

Priti Patel squirms as Piers calls for her resignation after losing ‘400,00 crime records’ https://briefnews.eu/priti-patel-squirms-as-piers-calls-for-her-resignation-after-losing-40000-crime-records/ https://briefnews.eu/priti-patel-squirms-as-piers-calls-for-her-resignation-after-losing-40000-crime-records/#respond Wed, 20 Jan 2021 10:42:58 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/priti-patel-squirms-as-piers-calls-for-her-resignation-after-losing-40000-crime-records/

On Tuesday, it was reported that 400,000 criminal records have disappeared from the police national computer following a technical issue. As this falls under the Home Office’s jurisdiction, Piers Morgan quizzed Priti Patel on whether she would step down from her cabinet position with the UK Government if the problem is not resolved.

Mr Morgan said: “400,000 crime records have disappeared from the police national computer on your watch.

“Can you give us some assurance because we know that in at least one instance a DNA profile from a suspect in custody did not generate a match to a crime scene as expected?

“This has potentially impeded the investigation into the individual’s involvement in the crime.

“Some serious criminals are going to get away with it because of the incompetence of this process.”

He continued: “Just to clarify you do know where they are?

Ms Patel replied: “They are on the systems.”

The GMB host asked: “Which system, which ones?”

The Home Secretary said: “I have already said I cannot tell you the name of those particular systems.”

Mr Morgan responded: “So you are saying as a fact as Home Secretary that these 400,000 crime records which we have all assumed have disappeared, you know with 100 percent certainty that they exist elsewhere and therefore there is nothing to worry about?”

The Home Secretary said: “We are working night and day to bring these records back.”

Mr Morgan responded: “That was not my question, my question was if you do not find them will you resign?”

Ms Patel said: “I have already told you Piers we are working night and day.”

The GMB host asked for a final time: “I know but if you don’t find them will you resign?”

The Conservative MP concluded: “It is my imperative that we secure this data.”

This Morning viewers furious with Priti Patel’s domestic abuse response ‘So heartless!’  https://briefnews.eu/this-morning-viewers-furious-with-priti-patels-domestic-abuse-response-so-heartless/ https://briefnews.eu/this-morning-viewers-furious-with-priti-patels-domestic-abuse-response-so-heartless/#respond Wed, 15 Apr 2020 11:28:10 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/this-morning-viewers-furious-with-priti-patels-domestic-abuse-response-so-heartless/

“And I do want to emphasise as well Ruth, this money, I speak to organisations every single day and I’ve spent a lot of time in recent weeks as well pressing this in government and directly with the organisations – the domestic abuse commissioner, the victim commissioner and the frontline charities themselves.

“This is the resource they have asked for, we are getting the money to them, we’ve been working with them, the police are also part of this national effort as well,” she continued.

Patel added: “I speak to police every single day as part of our operational discussions because of covid, and it’s clear right now we are seeing a small uptick from a policing perspective.

“But because people are stuck at home – trapped at home – they [domestic abuse victims] are using other means of communication, such as the helpline, such as the online services to seek support.

Piers Morgan CLASHES with Priti Patel during awkward first interview since May's ‘sacking' https://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-clashes-with-priti-patel-during-awkward-first-interview-since-mays-sacking/ https://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-clashes-with-priti-patel-during-awkward-first-interview-since-mays-sacking/#respond Mon, 22 Jan 2018 08:57:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-clashes-with-priti-patel-during-awkward-first-interview-since-mays-sacking/

Patel resigned from her role as international development secretary in November last year after it emerged that she was not candid about unofficial meetings with Israeli ministers.

The 45-year-old caused chaos for Prime Minister Theresa May who lost two cabinet members in the same week, causing some to question the power she has over the country.

Patel gave her first interview since the resignation, and was instantly faced with a barrage of awkward questions from Morgan, 52.

He asked: “Lets be honest, you were invited to leave… You’re a straight talker, you were sacked.”

Patel instantly went on the defensive, saying: “I left government. I apologised for my actions.”

“As a politician, we all know other politicians across the world, I think it would have been amiss to not visit other politicians I know.

“I caused difficulty for the government and I left.”

However, towards the end of the interview, it seemed to be as awkward as they battled over questions of leadership.

Morgan insisted that her ambitions nature would set her up well to stand for the role of PM.

Patel argued: “I haven’t got a crystal ball, no one knows what’s coming.”

Morgan fought back: “I am chillingly ambitious, are you?”

Patel said: “I’m ambitious for our country and of course I want to secure Britain’s place in the world.”

This comes after Piers Morgan himself joked about leading the country, after describing Theresa May’s recent cabinet reshuffle as “shambolic”.

He said on Good Morning Britain earlier in the year: “Trump kept saying, ‘I’m going to be President,’ so, I’m going to be British Prime Minister, I’m going to be British Prime Minister, I’m going to be British Prime Minister.

“And you know what? Already people are at home going, ‘Is Piers Morgan going to be Prime Minister?’

“And before you know it, I issue a statement denying obviously that I have any inspiration to be Prime Minister and lead the country, which everyone knows I mean to do, and before you know it, the bookies are out.”

Conservative MP SLAMS BBC for 'distracting' Priti Patel media circus during ITV interview https://briefnews.eu/conservative-mp-slams-bbc-for-distracting-priti-patel-media-circus-during-itv-interview/ https://briefnews.eu/conservative-mp-slams-bbc-for-distracting-priti-patel-media-circus-during-itv-interview/#respond Thu, 09 Nov 2017 08:25:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/conservative-mp-slams-bbc-for-distracting-priti-patel-media-circus-during-itv-interview/

His appearance came in light of Patel’s resignation yesterday after admitting to two previously undisclosed meetings with Israeli politicians on top of another alleged breach of protocol.

The Tory MP gave an interview on Good Morning Britain and took the opportunity to express his sorrow over what he called “a great loss”.

Zahawi told ITV hosts Susanna Reid and Ben Shephard: “Priti Patel is a great loss to the cabinet and I’m sure she’ll be back and she will make sure she helps get aid to where it needs to get to.

“The Prime Minister acted correctly – even exemplary – by asking Priti to come in to cabinet and explain herself.

“I think the feeding frenzy from many of your colleagues, and especially the BBC, hiring a helicopter to follow Priti’s motorcade or car from Heathrow to Downing Street created such a distraction for Priti and her own work for the government.

“She will be back, I’m sure of it,” he explained.

However, Shephard, 42, didn’t see it the same way, insisting that it was Patel herself who started the “frenzy”.

“It’s interesting you say that they’ve created the distraction, it was Priti that created the distraction by going in the first place to these meetings without telling her Prime Minister that she was going to be doing it!” the Good Morning Britain host interjected.

Zahawi, 50, snapped back: “Well what we do know is that Priti was on holiday that she paid for and she did have meetings with senior politicians but also with charities in her sector, in her work.

“The foreign office did know that, but they should have maybe known weeks in advance so they could coordinate and so the ambassador could be with her and that was her mistake.

“She admitted it and she apologised for it, but then further information was released and clearly her position was in danger and she needed to resign so the government could focus on [Brexit] negotiations,” he defended.

One viewer was in favour of Zahawi’s position, tweeting in support: “Thank goodness helicopter-gate was mentioned. Not impressed that the BBC is spending money this way.”

However, another posted that he should “give it a rest now, defending the indefensible”.

Priti Patel resigns amid row over secret meetings with Israeli politicians https://briefnews.eu/priti-patel-resigns-amid-row-over-secret-meetings-with-israeli-politicians/ https://briefnews.eu/priti-patel-resigns-amid-row-over-secret-meetings-with-israeli-politicians/#respond Wed, 08 Nov 2017 20:58:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/priti-patel-resigns-amid-row-over-secret-meetings-with-israeli-politicians/

Priti Patel resigned from her post as international development minister moments after her meeting with Theresa May on Wednesday. Patel was summoned to Downing Street from Africa, after further details emerged over secret meetings while she was on a family holiday, this summer.

The Tory MP was recalled to the UK as she headed to Uganda, after she was caught taking the secret, off-diary meetings which she later claimed Boris Johnson was made aware of.

The Foreign Secretary denied he was warned ahead of time.

Patel resigned as a cabinet minister but said she will continue to act as a voice for her constituents from the bank bench.

“Whilst my actions were meant with the best of intentions, my actions also fell below the standard of transparency and openness that I have promoted and advocated” Patel said.

“I offer a fulsome apology to you and to the Government for what has happened and offer my resignation.”

Theresa May was offered an apology from the minister, but as further details emerged Patel’s cabinet career looked finished.

On Tuesday, details of two further secret meetings with Israeli officials emerged on top of the 12 previously revealed. As well as meeting with Israeli politicians when she was on “holiday” in August, it is now claimed she met with public security minister Gilad Erdan at Westminster and foreign ministry official Yuval Rotem in New York in September.

It is understood Downing Street was told about the New York breakfast with Rotem when she disclosed the details of her Israel trip, but Number 10 only learnt on Tuesday about the meeting with Erdan. No British officials were present and, as with her meetings in Israel, she did not report them to the government or Foreign Office in the usual way.

Before these extra meetings were revealed, Downing Street insisted May had confidence in Patel, who was in Africa with International Trade Secretary Liam Fox. She travelled back from Nairobi on Wednesday at the request of Prime Minister Theresa May.

It was also revealed Patel had tried to divert British taxpayer’s money to the Israeli Army. Officially, Britain accuses Israel of occupying in the disputed Golan Heights illegally.

Names in the frame as a potential replacement for Patel’s cabinet post include Rory Stewart and Alistair Burt, both of whose current jobs straddle the Department for International Development (DfID) and the Foreign Office, and junior defence minister Tobias Ellwood.

Palestinians see Priti Patel’s secret Israeli meetings as further proof Britain isn’t their friend https://briefnews.eu/palestinians-see-priti-patels-secret-israeli-meetings-as-further-proof-britain-isnt-their-friend/ https://briefnews.eu/palestinians-see-priti-patels-secret-israeli-meetings-as-further-proof-britain-isnt-their-friend/#respond Wed, 08 Nov 2017 18:58:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/palestinians-see-priti-patels-secret-israeli-meetings-as-further-proof-britain-isnt-their-friend/ While the UK collectively holds its breath to see whether International Development Secretary Priti Patel will emerge from 10 Downing Street unscathed, Palestinian activists and academics have denounced the Tory MP’s deceptive conduct.

Patel was recalled from Africa Wednesday morning by Prime Minister Theresa May after fresh evidence emerged of Patel participating in off-diary, unauthorized meetings with prominent Israeli politicians.

Some have called Patel’s secret meetings with Israeli officials (while ‘on holiday’) “disappointing” and “a matter of grave concern,” while others have been much harsher on the embattled MP.

Academic Dr Ghada Karmi, research fellow at the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies at the University of Exeter, said Patel’s actions have reminded Palestinians they have no friends within the British government – just as things were a century ago.

“The current government marked the Balfour centenary on November 2nd ‘with pride’ – as if dispossessing the native population of Palestine in 1948, or supporting the apartheid state that was created then were causes for pride,” Karmi said.

“And now that the British secretary of state for International Affairs Priti Patel has been caught out making unauthorized contacts with members of the Israeli government… Israel’s interest in Patel has to do with cutting off British aid to the Palestinians through her department, and also to fighting the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) campaign, both of which Patel is in a position to bring about.”

Dr Karmi went on to question Patel’s motives, speculating whether her shady meetings were merely a prelude to a leadership power-grab.

“It seems what is in it for her is a leg-up in her bid to become the next British prime minister,” the Palestinian born academic and author said.

But Dr Karmi wasn’t alone in questioning if Patel’s secret dealings were an attempt to strengthen her future in politics . A statement released by the Palestinian Mission to the UK echoed the same concerns.

“It may be that the minister is also trying to strengthen her own political career with such formidable friends who may have been disheartened by the Foreign Secretary’s recent talk of the unfinished business of the Balfour declaration and his support for the establishment of a Palestinian state,” the statement said.

“We urge the government of Prime Minister Theresa May not to add insult to injury after the celebratory ‘marking’ of the Balfour declaration and to make a public statement about this scandalous affair to assure the international community that Britain is still firmly committed to the two-state solution,” the statement by the Palestinian Mission to the UK added.

Patel’s tangled web of secrets has unravelled even further, with details emerging of another two secret meetings with Israeli officials revealed in addition to the 12 already exposed to the public.

It is now claimed that she met with Israel’s Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan at Westminster and foreign ministry official Yuval Rotem in New York in September.

A Jews for Justice for Palestinians spokesperson told RT that working towards peace between Israel and the Palestinians is fraught enough without a British government minister potentially subverting established UK policy.

“As Jewish opponents of the occupation, JJP is concerned that… Patel has cut aid to the Palestinian territories, where the population is often impoverished as a result of the occupation. Instead, she seems to want to channel UK aid to projects involving the Israeli Defence Forces. We question the financial sense and moral purpose of her actions.”

A Number 10 spokesman confirmed that a conversation had taken place between Patel and Israeli officials, after it was reported that she had suggested funneling money to Israel’s armed forces to assist with medical support for wounded Syrian refugees.

“The Israeli army runs field hospitals there to care for Syrians wounded in the civil war,” the prime minister’s spokesman said.

“But there is no change in policy in the area. The UK does not provide any financial support to the Israeli army.”

Palestine Solidarity Campaign director Ben Jamal said Patel’s aid proposal is far worse than breached protocols, but called for the complete disclosure of her off-the-book meetings.

“That she would conduct a visit to occupied territory and propose giving aid to support the illegally occupying military force in that area, whatever the intended usage of the money, is worse,” Jamal said.

“But scrutiny also needs to be given to the fact that two of the secret meetings were with Gilad Erdan. He has no developmental brief. His ministerial brief is to suppress activism for Palestinian human rights on Israel and abroad. The purpose of Patel’s meetings with him and the full agenda need to be disclosed.”

Patel is currently meeting with May, where it’s expected she will be sacked.
