What do you do when you have a broken 3D printer? Throw it away? Tear it down for the parts? Felix has a better idea: repurpose the old Makerbot Replicator with a microscope to make a controlled, precision microscope machine. Using the Beaglebone Black and Replicape as the basis for the control circuitry, Ben Heck and Jason Kridner from Beagleboard.org lend their assistance to get Felix up and running. Have you used a Beaglebone Black? Or repurposed a 3D printer? Let the team know what you’d do differently over on the element14 Community.

If you’re a photo enthusiast ready to make the leap to creating your own gallery-quality prints at home, the most flexible option is an inkjet printer. After spending a total of 76 hours of research and side-by-side testing during various iterations of this guide, we think the best inkjet printer for making long-lasting, high-quality photographic prints up to 13 inches wide is the $ 800 Epson SureColor P600.
If you already own a 13-inch-capable photo inkjet printer, you should probably sit tight. Photo printer technology is so mature that you won’t see much (if any) difference in print quality between a printer made today and one released even five years ago.
If you don’t already own a photo inkjet printer, the first thing you should know is that getting one is not about saving money. Our pick is $ 800, a full set of replacement inks runs more than $ 280, and you also have to factor in paper costs (and, of course, your time). If you’re a casual hobbyist who occasionally wants to create physical mementos of life’s special moments and milestones, there are many in-store and online print services available, many at very low prices.
But home printing is a great option for photographers who print at least a few times a month, want the flexibility of printing at any time that’s convenient, enjoy selecting from an incredibly wide range of papers on which to print, and revel in the ability to make finely tuned adjustments to an image after evaluating an initial print.

To find the best inkjet photo printer, I spent hours poring over spec sheets and reading reviews from authoritative sources. Starting with a list of dozens of photo printers, I quickly narrowed the candidates to inkjet models capable of printing up to 13 inches wide. These printers are wide enough to give you the option of a larger print, have at least six ink colors (in individual cartridges) and let you print on both matte and glossy photo papers.
We printed on both glossy and matte papers up to 13 inches wide using paper stock and ICC profiles provided by the printer vendor. We used each printer’s default resolutions and viewed prints using professional color-corrected viewing booths. We also set up each printer on a home Wi-Fi network and compared speed over cable connections and wireless. Finally, we compared our photo inkjet prints with those from two online print services using identical image files. Please see our full guide to photo inkjet printers to learn more details about our testing methods.

The Epson P600 consistently delivers outstanding, long-lasting color and black-and-white photos with great image detail and accurate colors. These are truly gallery-quality prints that can provide many years of viewing pleasure. The printer accepts a wide range of inkjet-compatible media up to 13 inches wide, from photo lab-quality glossy paper and fine-art-oriented sheets that mimic classic darkroom prints to CDs/DVDs and even sheets of metal up to 1.3 mm thick.
Its newly formulated pigment-based UltraChrome HD inkset offers noticeably richer blacks than previous Epson models when printing on fine-art matte papers and comes in nine individual large-capacity cartridges. The nine-color ink set is able to print dots as small as two picoliters (two trillionths of a liter), and in addition to the standard CMY (cyan, magenta and yellow) inks, the printer uses Light Cyan, Vivid Magenta, Vivid Light Magenta, Photo Black (for glossy media), Matte Black (for matte papers), Light Black, and Light Light Black.
The P600 uses large 25.9 mL cartridges. With a current street price of $ 32 per cartridge, this works out to an ink cost of $ 1.28 per mL—not quite as cheap as our alternate pick, the Canon Pro-10.
You can connect the P600 to your computer via USB or wired Ethernet. The printer also has built-in Wi-Fi (helpful if you need to share the printer among multiple computers in separate rooms), and comes with a mobile app for direct printing from iOS and Android devices. These wireless options are much slower than wired printing, however, nearly doubling your print times.
If the P600 costs more than you’re willing to spend (it was $ 800 at time of writing), we recommend the dye-ink Canon Pixma Pro-100 (currently $ 380). This is a great choice if you’ll be making prints only for personal use, as opposed to selling editions of your work. It makes vibrant, professional-looking prints faster than any other 13-inch photo inkjet we found. At less than half the cost of our top pick, users who may occasionally skip a month between making prints can more easily justify the up-front expense. Because it uses dye inks, however, its prints won’t stand up over time as well as those from a pigment inkjet, and the Pro-100 can’t handle the superthick sheets that our top pick can.
The Canon Pixma Pro-10 is a great alternative to our top pick if you’ll be printing primarily on glossy papers. It’s solidly built, has a lower ink cost than our top pick and delivers great print quality, falling just slightly short of our top pick in highlight and shadow details when printing in black-and-white mode (because it has fewer black ink dilutions). With a $ 700 street price, the Pro-10 doesn’t offer any significant benefits over the P600—but we’ve seen occasional price drops of more than $ 250, and at that much of a discount, it’s a compelling alternative.

HP has been working on bringing voice control to its printers, introducing Cortana and Google Assistant skills last year that let users tell their virtual assistants to print a variety of different documents for them. Now, as of this week, Alexa-enabled devices can also connect to HP home printers.
Alexa can follow through on a number of different commands. Users can ask her to print games like sudoku puzzles or bingo cards, their to-do or shopping lists, coloring pages and even graph paper, blank calendars or notebook paper. You can see instructions on how to set up your printer to connect with Alexa here.
The Cortana and Google Assistant skills allow for similar commands, though each assistant has capabilities that the others don’t. For example, you can use the Google Assistant to print your Google Calendar or Alexa to print your Amazon shopping list. The Google Assistant HP skill launched last May while the Cortanta skill became available in October.
Anneliese Olson, HP’s head of home printing, says that connecting printers with voice assistants is convenient and useful though in the future, HP printers will likely be responsive to voice commands on their own. “Integrating voice into the home printer is an undeniably useful application of the technology,” Olson said in a statement. “For busy families, the virtual assistant ecosystem makes a lot of sense and connecting a printer to it is a natural extension within the smart home.”
]]>A transgender-diversity consultant was left “gobsmacked” after a devout Christian printer turned down her order for business cards, saying he did not want to promote a cause that might harm fellow believers.
Joanne Lockwood sought the promotional material for her firm SEE Change Happen, which offers companies advice on equality, diversity and inclusion, the Times reports.
Nigel Williams, a married father of three based in Southampton, refused to take the contract because it would “make pressure worse” on Christians who he believes are being forced to accept transgender people in society.
He wrote to her in an email: “The new model of diversity is used (or misused) to marginalize (or indeed discriminate against) Christians in their workplaces and other parts of society if they do not subscribe to it.
“Although I am quite sure you have no intention of marginalizing Christians it would weigh heavily upon me if through my own work I was to make pressure worse for fellow Christians.”
Campaign group Christian Institute jumped to his defense.
“It is a fundamental tenet of free speech and freedom of belief that people should not be forced to help promote causes flatly contrary to their own deeply held views,” the group said in a statement.
Lockwood, 52, who has been living as a transgender woman since January, told the Times she was “gobsmacked” by the response.
“I was not expecting a lecture. I disbelieved this could happen in 2017. I have been distraught and cried and my wife consoled me,” she said.
“I think a point of principle is at stake. He wanted to make a point to me deliberately for his own motives. I have been the victim of some discrimination.”
Christian Institute also backed a staunch Christian family in Northern Ireland last year who refused to make a cake in their bakery for a same-sex wedding.
A human rights barrister who advised on the “gay cake” case said at the time that if the baker lost, Muslim printers could be forced to produce cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.
The Court of Appeal upheld a ruling in October 2016 which found that Ashers Bakery in Co Antrim had discriminated against the gay couple.

It’s safe to say that we’re all familiar with the term “3D printing” by now, but “2.5D printing?” As silly as it sounds, this may be a game changer for all the industrial designers out there. At CEATEC, Casio demoed this Mofrel printing technology that adds a range of textures to ordinary-looking sheets, before giving them the final touch with a 16-million-color inkjet.
The printed samples looked and felt surprisingly convincing with a great level of detail — down to the uneven surfaces plus puffiness of leather, the subtle bumps on stitches and even the coarseness of embroidered fabrics (especially for kimono designs). Hard materials like wood, stone, brick and ceramic can also be mimicked, though some of these may require additional coating for hardness or shininess.
The secret behind this trick lies within Casio’s “digital sheets.” These appear to be slightly thicker sheets of paper, but in fact, they contain a layer of micro powder between the inkjet layer and the paper or PET substrate. Each powder particle consists of a liquid hydrocarbon coated with a thermoplastic resin (acrylonitrile), and such combination expands when exposed to heat, then the structure is retained when heat is removed, thus leaving behind the mimicked texture on the sheet.

To better control the texture formation, the texture pattern is first printed onto the sheet’s top microfilm using carbon, then these infrared-absorbing carbon particles focus the heat onto the desired areas of the micro powder layer. According to Casio Digital Art Division’s Executive Officer Hideaki Terada, the sheet’s expansion is currently capped at 1.7 mm thick for the sake of stability, but 2mm to 2.5mm is also technically possible albeit with difficulty. The microfilm is then peeled off so that colors can be printed onto the textured surface i.e. the inkjet layer.

The entire process takes around three to five minutes for a single-sided A4 “digital sheet,” with each sheet costing around $ 10 (Terada might have been referring to the PET-based version for this). This may seem steep compared to ordinary sheets of paper, but considering the vast range of textures that this technology can simulate, it’s actually a lot cheaper — and faster — than prototyping with the real materials. This is a dream come true for pretty much all sorts of designers. The printer also supports A3 sheets, and you can get double-sided sheets for both sizes (A4 would take about nine minutes to process), though prices for these are unknown.
As for the Mofrel printer, the current version costs around a whopping five million yen or about $ 44,400, and it’ll be available as a B2B solution some time next year. That said, I was told that some top automobile makers as well as electronics companies got early access to Mofrel, and they are already using it for research and development. It goes without saying that this price point is a bit too much for us mere mortals, but Terada hinted that his team is already prototyping a consumer version, though we’re still one to 1.5 years away from its debut.

A printer is the back-to-school tech accessory you might not be sure whether to bring with you to college. Professors are moving toward paper-free classrooms by allowing online paper submissions, and many schools now offer free or cheap printing in their computer labs.
However, as I discovered many times to my panic and dismay, school printing cannot be relied on. Computer labs operate at limited hours and the people running them are not sympathetic to the twilight hours at which you finally complete your paper. Fighting 30,000 other students to access one of the few printers on campus is also not a walk in the park — I wouldn’t wish this plight on my worst enemy.
Reliability and convenience aren’t the only reasons to seriously consider getting a printer for your dorm room or apartment. I had the opportunity to try the Canon PIXMA TS6020 Wireless All-in-One Printer, and as the name suggests, it’s a printer suitable for any use: not only the documents and presentations you’ll need to print for classes, but also the photos and paper crafts you can use to decorate your walls. This printer makes it easy to exercise your creative chops and produce nice prints without having to buy another device or make the out-of-the-way trip to a photo shop.
I’ve had my fair share of printer struggles, but to my relief and surprise, the instructions for this one were clear and easy to follow. It took me about half an hour to set up the printer, insert the five individual ink tanks (included), and install the necessary software on my laptop.
In addition to the printer, I received 8.5″ x 11″ Matte Photo Paper to try out. Unlike an ordinary printer, this one can handle thicker and textured papers.
I was impressed. The printer did not compromise the quality or colors of my photos at all. The inks effectively captured the vivid sunset colors, glowing jellyfish, crisp food details, and soft beach landscape very well. Another nice surprise: the photos didn’t take an agonizingly long time to print; instead, they were in my hands within 30 seconds. Having tested this printer’s quality and speed, I was excited to finally be able to get to work on an art project I’ve had in mind for awhile using these photo prints.
DIYers around the Internet used this Canon PIXMA printer to similar success in their creative ventures:

Floral Iron-on Alphabet Banner by Something Turquoise
The printer is also a scanner and copier, both of which worked well and produced clear, sharp copies, and you can toggle between these functions using the touch screen on its front.
The printer measures 14.7″ x 12.5″ x 5.5″ and was a little heavier than I expected at 13.6 pounds, but its compact size, sleek design, and absence of pesky wires made up for the weight. Because of its built in WiFi, you can use this printer from anywhere in your dorm or apartment on a computer, or by downloading Canon’s PRINT app on your iOS or Android device.
I always hated taking the extra step of emailing myself documents or photos from my phone so that I could print them from a computer. The app eliminates that step and was easy to navigate.
Overall, the printer was easy to use and produced great prints without taking a lot of time. It’s just as reliable for anything else you print, scan, or copy, whether it’s a textbook diagram, report, or presentation, and at under $ 100 it’s budget-friendly for college students.

Yahoo stockholders today approved the terms of the acquisition of the company’s Internet business by Verizon for $ 4.48 billion. What once was Yahoo’s primary business will be merged with Verizon’s AOL unit to create a business to be called “Oath.”
With that deal on final approach, many Yahoo and AOL employees may be uttering oaths of their own as Verizon prepares to purge about 2,100 workers from the combined organization, according to a Wall Street Journal report. That amounts to about 15 percent of the combined workforce of the two businesses. The layoffs are expected to be spread evenly across AOL and Yahoo staff, and few of the cuts are expected to affect engineers and product teams.
The layoffs mark the latest series of cuts for both Yahoo and AOL, which have both been shedding employees in anticipation of the deal. AOL cut about 500 employees late last year, and Yahoo is down from about 14,000 employees in 2010 to roughly 8,100 as of the end of last year.

The US Supreme Court voted 7-1 to place more limits on the rights of patent-holders, striking down a decision by the nation’s top patent court for the second time in two weeks.
In Impression Products v. Lexmark International, the justices’ opinion (PDF) made crystal clear that once a patented item has been sold once, the patent is “exhausted” and can no longer be enforced. That’s true even if the sale happened abroad and the item was later imported. Lexmark had two different strategies for trying to control how its cartridges get re-used; the high court struck down both of them and paid scant regard to various industry briefs pleading to maintain the pricing structures used by Lexmark and others to maintain profits.
Lexmark had been trying to use patent laws to impose restrictions on companies like Impression Products, which are known as “remanufacturers.” These companies acquire Lexmark cartridges, then re-fill and re-sell them. A strong 10-2 majority of judges on the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, which hears all patent appeals, took Lexmark’s side and found that the patent-related restrictions were justified.
