Reince Priebus, the former White House chief of staff sat down with special counsel Robert Mueller on Friday as part of the ongoing investigation of Russia’s meddling in the US election, according to Preibus’ attorney, William Burck, who was cited by Politico.

Priebus, who left the Trump administration in July, had previously said he would cooperate with the investigation, and a statement from Burck reaffirmed that on Friday: “Mr. Priebus was voluntarily interviewed by Special Counsel Mueller’s team today. He was happy to answer all of their questions,” the attorney said.

Mueller’s team has conducted interviews with a number of current and former Trump campaign and administration staffers as the Russia probe continues. The inquiry has broadened significantly since Mueller took the reins in May, shortly after Trump fired then-FBI Director James Comey.

A far-reaching congressional inquiry on Russia’s medding is also underway.

Current and former associates of Trump and his campaign have also said they would cooperate with Mueller’s investigators, but some have been resistant — including, Carter Page; a former foreign-policy adviser to the Trump campaign who pleaded the Fifth Amendment this week in response to a Senate Intelligence Committee request for testimony and Michael Flynn; the former national security adviser who was ousted over his contacts with Russian operatives before and during the 2016 campaign.

Steve Bannon, President Donald Trump’s former chief strategist, told CBS News’ Charlie Rose that former White House chief of staff Reince Priebus advised Trump after the release of the bombshell “Access Hollywood” tape that he could either drop out of the race or face the worst electoral defeat in US history.

Trump’s campaign was rocked by the release of the 2005 tape, in which Trump describes groping women in lewd detail to “Access Hollywood’s” Billy Bush. Many prominent Republicans swiftly condemned the remarks and distanced themselves from Trump.

Bannon described to CBS the conversation that took place during a Trump Tower meeting following The Washington Post’s release of the tape.

“Trump went around the room and asked people the percentages he thought of — of still winning and what the recommendation,” Bannon said. “And Reince started off and Reince said, ‘You have — you have two choices. You either drop out right now, or you lose by the biggest landslide in American political history.’ And Trump, with his humor goes, ‘That’s a great way … to start our conversation.”

“We went around the room,” he continued. “And you could tell — I could tell from the incoming of politicians and I could tell from some of the politicians that were there, is that the natural inclination of politicians are to be so overwhelmingly stunned and shocked by how the media comes on you. But Trump wasn’t that. And I told him as he went around, I was the last guy to speak, and I said, ‘It’s 100%. You have 100% probability of winning.'”

It was previously reported that Priebus urged Trump to drop out of the race that October night. Vanity Fair reported that Priebus told Trump that if he didn’t drop out, he would “go down with a worse election loss than Barry Goldwater’s.” Goldwater, a Republican senator from Arizona, was trounced by Democratic President Lyndon Johnson in 1964.

As The New York Times wrote in July, Trump “would never forget the exchange” with Priebus.

Priebus, then the Republican National Committee chairman, released a response to the tape shortly after it was published, saying, “No woman should ever be described in these terms or talked about in this manner. Ever.”

Bannon said that conversation was the “first time and only time” Trump “ever got upset with me,” seeming to doubt Bannon’s assertion that the then-Republican presidential nominee should double-down and that he had a “100%” chance of winning.

“He goes, “Come on, it’s not 100%,'” Bannon said in his retelling of the discussion. “I go, ‘It’s absolutely 100%.” And I told him why. ‘They don’t care.'”

Rose took issue with the end of Bannon’s comment, saying voters “do care about respect for women” and it was not “just locker room talk,” as Trump said in his initial statement following the tape’s release. Bannon said “they do” have respect for women, but added “that’s locker room talk.”

“The Billy Bush thing is locker room talk,” he said.

Bannon, who is back to running the right-wing website Breitbart News after leaving the White House, said the “Access Hollywood” tape ordeal was a “litmus test,” adding that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s response to it cost him a cabinet position.

“I told him, ‘The plane leaves at 11 o’clock in the morning,” Bannon said. “‘If you’re on the plane, you’re on the team.’ Didn’t make the plane.”

Later that October night, Trump released an on-camera apology for his comments, but quickly pivoted to attacking his opponent, Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

Trump raised former President Bill Clinton’s past sex scandals, saying, “I’ve said some foolish things, but there’s a big difference between the words and actions of other people. Bill Clinton has actually abused women and Hillary has bullied, attacked, shamed and intimidated his victims.”

He closed with, “We will discuss this more in the coming days. See you at the debate on Sunday.”

In yet another sign of upheaval at the White House, chief of staff Reince Priebus was ousted on Friday, replaced by Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly, President Trump announced via Twitter.

“I am pleased to inform you that I have just named General/Secretary John F Kelly as White House Chief of Staff,” Trump tweeted. “He is a Great American and a Great Leader. John has also done a spectacular job at Homeland Security. He has been a true star of my Administration.”

“I would like to thank Reince Priebus for his service and dedication to his country. We accomplished a lot together and I am proud of him!” Trump added.

His exit comes after months of speculation that the chief of staff could be ousted at any moment, and just a day after Anthony Scaramucci, the new White House communications director, openly accused Priebus of leaking to the media and called him “a fucking paranoid schizophrenic, a paranoiac.”

In recent days, senior adviser Kellyanne Conway had told people that Priebus was “gone” and that he was trying to figure out his next steps, a source with knowledge told BuzzFeed News. According to Conway, White House staffers who came from the Republican National Committee were out and the administration was “going back to Trump loyalists,” the source said.

Priebus previously served as chairman of the RNC and is considered a Republican Party stalwart, as opposed to a Trump loyalist. During the presidential campaign, he advised Trump to drop out of the race when the lewd Access Hollywood tape was revealed — a fact Trump never let Priebus forgot after his election victory.

As part of his White House role, Priebus was tasked with managing the president’s schedule and who he met with, but he had beenwidely reported to be a “dead man walking” for months.

But his ouster also represents a significant victory for Scaramucci, who had been openly feuding with Priebus for days.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer, a close ally of Priebus, resigned after Scaramucci was hired on July 21.

On Wednesday, after telling the New Yorker that he believed Priebus had leaked information about him to the press, Scaramucci tagged his colleague in a (now deleted) tweet:

“In light of the leak of my financial info which is a felony. I will be contacting @FBI and the @TheJusticeDept #swamp @Reince45.

On Thursday morning, Scaramucci denied that he was openly threatening Priebus with an FBI investigation for supposedly leaking, instead claiming it was “public notice to all leakers that all s[enio]r Admin officials are helping to end public leaks”.

That was refuted by his interview in the New Yorker, published Thursday afternoon.

Scaramucci also appeared on CNN Thursday morning, and mentioned his foe Priebus, describing their relationship like “brothers”:

If you want to talk about [Reince Priebus], we have had odds. We have had differences. When I said we were brothers from the podium, that’s because we’re rough on each other. Some brothers are like Cain and Abel. Other brothers can fight with each other and get along. I don’t know if this is reparable or not, that will be up to the president.

White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci sent out a cryptic tweet Wednesday night that seemed to call out White House chief of staff Reince Priebus.

“In light of the leak of my financial disclosure info which is a felony. I will be contacting @FBI and the @TheJusticeDept #swamp @Reince45,” Scaramucci’s tweet read.

Scaramucci appears to reference a story of an alleged financial disclosure that was reported by Politico earlier Wednesday.

The report claimed that Scaramucci earned $ 4.9 million from his stake in the investment firm SkyBridge Capital and a salary of more than $ 5 million from the Export-Import Bank in 2016.

Scaramucci’s tweet comes amid long-playing rumors of turmoil between Scaramucci and Priebus — and speculation that Priebus’ job may be on the line now that Scaramucci is firmly in President Donald Trump’s inner circle as the new White House communications director.

Priebus and former White House press secretary Sean Spicer were both vehemently against Scaramucci’s hiring.

Scaramucci’s apparent veiled threat may be motivated by other factors, as CNN reporter Evan Perez notes that “financial disclosure forms are filed with the Office of Government Ethics (OGE) and are not classified.”

CNN contributor Ryan Lizza also said Wednesday night that Scaramucci blamed Priebus “for blocking him at every turn” when he tried to get a job in the White House soon after Trump was elected.

Lizza said that Scaramucci tried to go around Priebus to talk to Trump about working in his administration, and later blamed Priebus “for cancelling three scheduled meetings with the president” before he was eventually hired as communications director.

Rumors of divisions within the White House were either dispelled or proven depending on who was watching, when President Donald Trump’s chief strategist Stephen Bannon and chief of staff Reince Priebus took the stage at CPAC.

On Thursday at the 2017 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), Bannon and Priebus sat down with Matt Schlapp, chairman of the American Conservative Union, which hosts the annual gathering of thousands of activists.

The “big moment,” as the interview was cast, began with a question on media accuracy. Reports of feuding between Bannon, former executive chair of Breitbart News, and Priebus, former chair of the Republican National Committee, were downplayed immediately.

“In regard to us two, I think the biggest misconception is everything that you’re reading,” Priebus told the crowd, adding that when the Republican Party and conservative movement joins together as he and Bannon have, “it can’t be stopped.”

Bannon agreed, attributing their cohesive relationship to the leadership of Trump, who the chief strategist said brought the ideas, energy and vision that could galvanize people. At one point, they were asked to comment on each other. Priebus called Bannon “incredibly loyal” and “extremely consistent,” while Bannon complimented Priebus as “unwavering.”

Not all who watched the interview were convinced.

Some took issue with the interview overall, while others praised it.

Bannon called the media “corporatist” and “globalist,” adding that they “are adamantly opposed to an economic nationalist agenda.”

On carrying out that agenda, Bannon said they were “maniacally focused” to make sure “all of those promises are going to be implemented.”

The vision goes beyond changing America over the next four years, but “potentially over 40 years,” Priebus said, citing Supreme Court justice nominee Neil Gorsuch and Trump’s executive order putting into place a “constant deregulatory flow” where two regulations are repealed for every new one implemented.

Bannon and Priebus each highlighted different issues, with Bannon sounding off on more nationalist appeals than Priebus’ traditional points.

“We’re a nation with a culture and a reason for being,” Bannon said.

Priebus did hit the media just as hard as Bannon, explaining that reports on Trump during the campaign were inconsistent with what he heard back home from neighbors. But Priebus did share his feeling that the media might learn from its mistake. Bannon, however, was less optimistic, predicting the coverage would only get worse.

“If you think you’re going to win this country back without a fight, you’re mistaken,” Bannon said.

News reports of US President Donald Trump having contacted with Moscow during his presidential campaign are “not only grossly overstated, but also wrong,” White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus said, citing top US intelligence officials.

“I can assure you, the top levels of the intelligence community have assured me that [the allegation] is not only grossly overstated, but also wrong,” Priebus said in an interview with ‘Fox News Sunday.’

“They have made it very clear that the story is complete garbage,” he added.

Priebus declined to name his sources within the CIA and FBI, according to the report.

“There are certain things that are happening in the news that just aren’t honest,” the White House official added, when asked to comment on Trump’s relations with the media.
