Nvidia announced yesterday that its upcoming H100 “Hopper” Tensor Core GPU set new performance records during its debut in the industry-standard MLPerf benchmarks, delivering results up to 4.5 times faster than the A100, which is currently Nvidia’s fastest production AI chip.
The MPerf benchmarks (technically called “MLPerfTM Inference 2.1“) measure “inference” workloads, which demonstrate how well a chip can apply a previously trained machine learning model to new data. A group of industry firms known as the MLCommons developed the MLPerf benchmarks in 2018 to deliver a standardized metric for conveying machine learning performance to potential customers.
In particular, the H100 did well in the BERT-Large benchmark, which measures natural language-processing performance using the BERT model developed by Google. Nvidia credits this particular result to the Hopper architecture’s Transformer Engine, which specifically accelerates training transformer models. This means that the H100 could accelerate future natural language models similar to OpenAI’s GPT-3, which can compose written works in many different styles and hold conversational chats.

]]>Landing a plum role on the buzzy 2011 TV project “was like a dream come true,” Pascal told our sister site Variety.
The David E. Kelley-penned pilot starred Palicki as Wonder Woman aka Themyscira Industries CEO Diana Themyscira aka mild-mannered Diana Prince (yes, she had two alter egos, oof). Justin Bruening (All My Children) co-starred as Steve Trevor, an Army vet who now works in the Justice Department, while Elizabeth Hurley (The Royals) played nemesis Veronica Cale.
Pascal, whose main TV credits at that point included arcs on The Good Wife and FX’s Lights Out, played Ed Indelicato, an LAPD detective who liaisoned with the city’s local superhero.
“It was like a dream come true,” the star of The Mandalorian recalled for Variety. “David E. Kelley’s influence on television when I was freshly out of college was so huge, and I watched every episode of [Palicki’]s Friday Night Lights. I also thought that whether it was good or not, it would definitely get picked up. So that would change my financial situation significantly, even if it was half a season before it got canceled. But it didn’t even get picked up.”
As for whether Wonder Woman 1984 helmer Patty Jenkins knew of his previous run-in with the Amazonian princess at the time he was cast as one of the sequel’s two villains, Max Lord, he was unsure, shrugging, “They must have either not have known or not cared.”
Shortly after NBC cut bait on its Wonder Woman series, TVLine asked then-network chief Robert Greenblatt about the decision. “With this kind of audience, you have to get these things absolutely right; there’s no room for error. At the end of the day, I didn’t think we had done that,” he explained. “The action is amazing. Adrianne Palicki is beautiful. Elizabeth Hurley is fantastic. It’s like any creative thing — there are going to be people who like it or don’t like it.”

13 Reasons Why returns to Netflix for its final season on Friday, closing the book on Liberty High School’s legacy of trauma and giving its characters what Devin Druid calls a “proper sendoff.”
“We were really fortunate that Netflix gave us the opportunity to have this many seasons and write an actual ending,” Druid, who plays Tyler Down, tells TVLine. “Not every show has that same luxury, so I’m really grateful.”
Not only is the show’s final season shorter than its previous three (with 10 episodes instead of the usual 13), but as Druid explains, it’s also “more of a departure from the other seasons, which had a central catalyst that motivated the characters. This season just takes a look at everything these characters have gone through, and the story comes from how they react to all of that. So it kind of goes the opposite way, which I think is really fun.”
The show’s final season forces its characters to confront everything they’ve done, including the painful secrets they agreed to bury rather than work through. (As we saw in the trailer, the ghosts of Bryce Walker and Montgomery Cruz are among those still haunting the hallways.) For Tyler, facing his past may include taking responsibility for the time he brought an assault rifle to the school dance back in Season 2.
“We did see those guns being pulled out of the water at the end of Season 3,” Druid reminds us. “If something like that were to get brought back into play, that would certainly be traumatizing for Tyler. It would also threaten everything he has worked on and built towards in order to make things right. So he’s definitely worried about that. These characters have a few huge secrets that they’re trying to keep under wraps, so everyone has a lot to worry about.”
And while Druid can’t say how Tyler’s story will play out, he feels good about the progress that his character has made during the show’s four seasons. “Tyler doesn’t always make the right decisions, but he’s the first one to take the necessary steps to right his wrongs,” Druid says. “I’ve always appreciated that about him.”

Strictly Come Dancing is slowly but surely crossing celeb after celeb off the leaderboard as the final looms ever closer. But on Saturday’s show, one professional dancer had more to be thankful for than just making it though another week.
And, to say he was ecstatic would be an under statement.
On the floor with his head in his heads, he struggled to compose himself as Emma looked bewildered when Claudia Winkleman revealed she had helped him reach a big goal.
“17 series, you don’t understand!” He said, cradling Claudia’s head as she was trying to read out their voting number.
“This is how Kevin Clifton feels, it’s lovely!”
He joked as the audience and his fellow contestants roared with laughter, patting him on the back and congratulating the pair for their score.
And, their dance seemed a hit at home as well for viewers as they were voted to stay on Sunday’s results show.
In an interview on the sofa, they chatted with Claudia about how they felt to receive two of the highest marks.
“I never thought, ever, that as Emma Barton, I would be getting a 10 in Strictly Come Dancing,” she said, not believing the scores from the day before.
“I’m so grateful I was just so pleased for him because this is what I wanted to achieve for Anton, the King of Ballroom, at the home of ballroom,” she beamed at her partner.

Claudia said to Anton: “Anton Du Beke, your first 10s on Strictly Come Dancing,” she began before he interrupted.
“Can I bask for just a second,” he smiled as he gazed up at the ceiling.
“Thank you, thank you so much,” he said to Emma.
“When Pasha Kovalev left Strictly Come Dancing last year, he announced he’d had 93 10s in eight years,” the pro revealed as the ballroom erupted with laughter.
“I’ve got 91 to go! I don’t know whether I’ve got the years left but it’s a start!”, he joked.
The sly dig comes as the BBC dancer has previously been put with slightly older celebrities.
He described being partnered with Emma as “an absolute dream” in an interview with the Radio Times.
He said ahead of the show: “I’m very excited about this one. Emma’s tall, gorgeous and talented.
“She’s an absolute dream and, I’ve got to be honest, younger than I’m used to. And she’s got her own teeth. That’ll do for me.”
Saturday’s performance was the highest score he had ever received on the show in the 17 years he’s been dancing on it and it definitely came as a shock.
Hopefully the couple can keep up momentum next week and blow the judges away once again – maybe even persuading Craig to hold up his number ten paddle board!
Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturday one BBC One.
Ryanair’s future in the UK and outside of Europe is now certain – even if details of the UK’s Brexit deal impact on travel are not. The budget airline has made a major reveal on upcoming routes after previously claiming its base rate journeys, loved by bargain holiday hunters across the country, could be “pulled” if a particularly stringent Leave deal was reached. Its Chief Financial Officer Neil Sorahan told how Ryanair was “very concerned” and added: “If there is a hard Brexit and flights can’t operate then we will have to pull them at that point in time.” Prime Minister Theresa May has confirmed the UK will leave the geographic region on March 31, without the prospect of a second referendum.
Now Michael O’Leary’s firm has confirmed the UK CAA has issued Ryanair UK with a UK AOC, a document which will allow it to operate UK domestic and UK to non-EU routes post-Brexit.
The agreement spells good news for holidaymakers, many of whom are concerned about planning holidays in the wake of the political uncertainty.
It means they can book flights to locations outside of the political geographic unit without fear of them being pulled due to the changing landscape.
It may also spark a surge in staycation journeys, with passengers opting to stay in the UK and venture to destinations including Scotland and northern England instead.
Ryanair, despite securing its future outside of the EU, has now reinforced its call for the UK and EU to agree a transition deal from 31 March 2019, so disruption to flights and summer holidays in 2019 can be avoided.
Ryanair’s Juliusz Komorek said: “We welcome the Civil Aviation Authority’s decision to grant our UK based airline, Ryanair UK, with a UK AOC, allowing Ryanair to operate UK domestic routes and UK to non-EU routes in a post-Brexit environment.
“The risk of a ‘no deal’ Brexit in March is rising, and despite our robust post-Brexit structures, including our post-Brexit plan around European ownership, we continue to call for the UK and EU to agree a transition deal from 31 March 2019, so that any disruption to flights and British consumer summer holidays in 2019 can be avoided.”
British airlines can currently offer services to anywhere they want to within the European Union because of the bloc’s common rules for aviation, also known as the European Common Aviation Area arrangements (ECAA).
Previously, Ryanair’s boss said he could not guarantee passengers will be able to take flights booked for 2019 if Britain leaves the bloc will no Brexit deal.
Britain is also a member of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) which sets the rules of flying safety throughout the EU. A no deal Brexit could see the UK abruptly leave the EASA without the guarantee flights could take off or land in Britain.
Speaking previously on Sky News, Neil added: “Nobody can ever guarantee what’s going to happen in the future, particularly in relation to Brexit when there is so much uncertainty.
“We are very concerned. I think recent issues here in the UK have made it possible a little bit more likely than it was before.
“That said, I did listen to the Brexit Secretary who was very confident that he’d be able to get a deal in place by October.
“So, we hoped that transition deal will be put in place over the next couple of months. We are continuing to work towards finalising our schedules for next year.
“In all reality, we will probably load schedule for the UK on the proviso that if by law we are able to fly then we obviously will operate on.”
It has been speculated flight fares, as well as waiting times at airports, will increase post-Brexit.

The pound has retained the high levels its been trading at all week and creeped up even further.
The growth comes despite new UK construction and manufacturing production data proving disappointing.
Optimism regarding a Brexit deal should serve to keep the pound buoyant, said experts.
The pound is currently trading at €1.144 against the euro, according to Bloomberg
Laura Parsons, currency analyst at TorFX, spoke to Express.co.uk regarding the latest exchange rate figures.
“The GBP/EUR exchange rate managed to hold previous gains on Wednesday and continued trading in the region of €1.144 despite disappointing construction and manufacturing production data for the UK.
“Although UK data is in short supply tomorrow, ongoing optimism that the UK is close to reaching a Brexit deal could keep Sterling supported against the common currency as we head towards the weekend.”
Market confidence has already increased as European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker hinted the chances of a good deal have grown, as did the Irish Deputy Prime Minister, Simon Coveney.
Coveney revealed on Sunday a Brexit deal is “90 per cent” completed “in terms of text” and should be finalised in the coming weeks.
But Kengo Suzuki, chief FX strategist at Mizuho Securities cautioned: “We can’t be too optimistic about the Brexit process.
“Even if a deal can be struck at an anticipated special EU summit in November, it has to get through the British Parliament.”
However, there has been a mixed outlook from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) which has served to lower trader confidence.
IMF officials have cautioned slow Brexit progress could damage UK and Eurozone economic growth.
The report read: “The possible failure of Brexit negotiations poses another risk.
“An intensification of trade tensions and the associated further rise in policy uncertainty could dent business and financial market sentiment, trigger financial market volatility, and slow investment and trade.”
The next major Eurozone data to watch out for will be Thursday’s release of European Central Bank (ECB) meeting accounts.
If these accounts show that European Central Bank (ECB) policymakers could be planning to raise interest rates next year then the euro could rally against the pound.
Holidaymakers looking to escape the cold should think of heading to Turkey – the pound is strong against the Turkish lira meaning holidays to Turkey can be grabbed for a bargain.
Pressure on the lira saw inflation rates rise to nearly 25 per cent in September, marking the highest levels since President Erdogan came to power 15 years ago.
The most recent strain on the lira came after US sanctions were imposed over an American pastor, who is being held in Turkey for nearly two years over espionage and terrorism-related charges.

If our Universe happened to be locked in an eternal heartbeat of expansion and collapse, black holes would leave an impression. And it could look just like a number of swirls recently detected in the faint echo of light at the edge of space.
It’s hardly the smoking gun for what’s called the conformal cyclic cosmology (CCC) model, especially given other things that could also explain these ‘scars’. But it’s definitely worthy of serious consideration.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

IN A British television show, “Doctor Who”, the titular character is able to travel anywhere in time and space in his Tardis police box. Given access to that technology, what useful message would this columnist impart to his previous self, nearly 12 years and 550 columns ago?
The first lesson would be to avoid confusing the economy with the financial markets. If you looked at share prices alone, you might assume the intervening period had been calm; the S&P 500 index is around double its level when this column began in September 2006. But though the markets have long since recovered their sangfroid after the crisis of 2008-09, the trend growth rate of developed economies has never regained its strength. That is a bitter irony given that the crisis originated within the financial sector, bringing to mind a teenager who crashes their parents’ car and leaves them with the bill.
In part, the market’s resilience was owing to the remarkable strength of corporate profits, something else that would not have been obvious 12 years ago. Back then American profits were only just reaching a post-war high, relative to GDP. When they plunged in 2009, it looked like a return to normal. But the pre-crisis levels were rapidly regained and, indeed, surpassed. Explanations for the strength of profits include less competition in some…
]]>The reports about an alleged chlorine gas attack that, supposedly, affected more than 20 civilians on January 22, were dismissed by the medical specialists of the Red Crescent, who worked in the Damascus suburb of Eastern Ghouta for many years. The doctors said they found no traces of the use of any chemical agent at that time.
“At some point, our [hospital] received six people, who were allegedly suffering from respiratory problems. Following a medical examination, we did not find any problems at all, any traces of chemical agents,” Seif Aldin Hobia, a member of the Red Crescent, who worked for the last seven years at the central hospital of Douma in Eastern Ghouta, told journalists. Recalling the events that took place in January, he said “we had no evidence of chemical agents being used [in the area].”
His words were echoed by another medical specialist of the Red Crescent, Muhammad Adnan Tabazhu, who said that the medics obtained no evidence of chemical weapons being used in Eastern Ghouta between 2012 and 2018, when he was working in the area.
Back in January, former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson famously claimed that “more than 20 civilians, mostly children, were victims of an apparent chlorine gas attack,” adding that the incident raised “serious concerns that Bashar al-Assad may be continuing to use chemical weapons against his own people.”
‘Syria gases own people just as Trump mulls withdrawal?’ Journalists question Douma ‘chem attack’
He then immediately said that “whoever conducted the attacks, Russia ultimately bears responsibility for the victims in eastern Ghouta and countless other Syrians targeted with chemical weapons since Russia became involved in Syria.”
The timing of the incident, that has now been exposed as fake, conspicuously coincided with a 29-nation conference in Paris, organized to create the ‘International Partnership against Impunity for the Use of Chemical Weapons.’ The reports about the ‘attack’ came just a day ahead of the meeting. The reports were produced by controversial pro-militant sources, namely the White Helmets and the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).
Moscow at the time slammed the US accusations as a “massive propaganda attack conducted with the purpose of slandering Russia on the world stage and undermining efforts for a peaceful settlement in Syria.” Back then Russia also called an emergency UN Security Council meeting, to discuss those allegations of the use of chemical weapons Syria.
In early February, Pentagon chief James Mattis admitted that the US has no evidence of such a chemical agent as sarin ever being used by the Syrian government at all. He also openly said that the only information the US had been able to obtain, so far, came from “other groups on the ground, NGOs, fighters on the ground” and just “people who claim it’s been used.”
Mattis, however, claimed that it was “clear” that Damascus had used chlorine gas in the Syrian conflict but, as before, failed to provide any evidence substantiating his claims. Reports of chemical attacks, blamed on Damascus, had repeatedly surfaced earlier, with Western media and officials immediately jumping at the opportunity to put all the blame for such incidents on the Syrian government and Moscow, often only to admit later that they actually have no evidence the attacks in question had even taken place.
The latest revelations come amid another wave of hysteria that followed yet another claim made by the same controversial pro-militant sources that, once again, have accused Damascus of carrying out a chemical attack in the town of Douma on Saturday. Syria and Russia dismissed all the accusations and called the reports fake news and propaganda, which were aimed at helping the extremists and justifying potential strikes against Syrian forces.
