The skeletal remains of a female "vampire" were found in a 17th-century Polish graveyard — with a sickle across her neck to prevent her rising from the dead.

Professor Dariusz Poliński from Nicholas Copernicus University headed the archaeological dig that led to the discovery of the remains, which were found wearing a silk cap and with a protruding front tooth, the Daily Mail reported Friday.

"The sickle was not laid flat but placed on the neck in such a way that if the deceased had tried to get up… the head would have been cut off or injured," Poliński told the Daily Mail.

In the 11th century, citizens of Eastern Europe reported fears of vampires and began treating their dead with anti-vampire rituals, according to Smithsonian magazine, believing that "some people who died would claw their way out of the grave as blood-sucking monsters that terrorized the living."

By the 17th century, Science Alert reported such burial practices "became common across Poland in response to a reported outbreak of vampires."

"Other ways to protect against the return of the dead include cutting off the head or legs, placing the deceased face down to bite into the ground, burning them, and smashing them with a stone," Poliński told the New York Post.

Though other common anti-vampire burial methods included a metal rod hammered through the skeleton, the remains in Poland were found with the sickle across the neck and a padlocked toe to restrain her. 

The padlocked big toe attached to the skeleton's left foot, Poliński told the Daily Mail, likely symbolized "the closing of a stage and the impossibility of returning."

Poliński did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

Before the close of Survivor Season 39, which CBS acknowledges was “unprecedented” in how “inappropriate individual behavior intersect[ed] with game play,” the network has announced new policies and procedures designed to curb sexual harassment, biases and other social issues.

“We recognize there are things we could have done differently” during Season 39, which saw castaway Dan Spilo historically removed from the competition after multiple alleged instances of inappropriate physical contact with cast and crew, “and we are determined to do better going forward,” the network said in a statement.

For Season 40, which has already filmed, the show added to its pre-production cast orientation specific guidelines regarding personal space, inappropriate behavior, and how to report these issues. For Seasons 41 and beyond, producers are reviewing all elements of the show to further support appropriate interaction, including how the players live during, as well as after they are eliminated from, the competition.

Additional measures being taken to “further support a safe environment” include:

The production will add another on-site professional to provide a confidential means of reporting any concerns, so that the production can address them promptly apart from the game.

The show will enhance its pre-production orientation with new anti-harassment, unconscious bias, and sensitivity training for cast, producers and production crew on location.

A new rule will be implemented stating unwelcome physical contact, sexual harassment and impermissible biases cannot be brought into the competition and will not be permitted as part of gameplay. This will be covered in the cast orientation for each season, along with clear instructions on how to report violations.

The show will partner with a third-party expert in the field to review, evolve or add to these new policies and procedures going forward.

During Survivor’s Nov. 13 episode, castaway Kellee Kim made clear her discomfort with Spilo’s encroaching of her personal space and inappropriate touching. On-site producers were forced to intervene, and give Spilo a formal warning. Spilo on Dec. 11 was removed from the game after a report of another incident, which happened off-camera and did not involve a player. (People reported that the incident in question involved a member of the series’ production team and happened after an immunity challenge, when Spilo and his fellow contestants were getting into a boat to transport them back to the camp.)

YouTube’s dislike button can be a source of anxiety for many creators, and now YouTube is considering a number of options to prevent viewers from abusing that tool. Tom Leung, director of project management at YouTube, posted an update to the Creator Insider channel recently in which he detailed some “lightly discussed” options for combatting “dislike mobs,” or large groups of users who slam the dislike button on a video before watching the whole thing, or even watching the video at all.

While none of the options Leung details may ever become permanent, YouTube is thinking about experimentation. Currently, like and dislike ratings are shown by default—that’s why anyone can see the number of likes and dislikes a video has by checking out the numbers next to the thumbs-up and thumbs-down icons beneath the video player. However, users can change their settings to make ratings invisible.

One of the new options YouTube has talked about is making those ratings invisible by default, so you wouldn’t be able to see the number of likes or dislikes a video has. Other options include asking users to provide more information about why they disliked a video (possibly in the form of a checklist), removing the dislike count across the board, and removing the dislike button entirely.

Indian police were forced to intervene when a massive crowd of male pilgrims tried to prevent two women of menstruating age from reaching one of Hinduism’s holiest sites, contrary to tradition.

Two female pilgrims in their mid-40s took on a hostile horde of men on Monday as they tried to make the journey to the Sabarimala shrine. Insulted and harassed along the way, the male protesters did everything they could to prevent women from entering the hill temple in the southern Kerala state.

The road leading to the temple was eventually blocked by a crowd of pilgrims just one kilometer away from the women’s final destination. Fearing unpredictable consequences, police were forced to intervene. Pushing the angry crowd back, security forces used their shields to escort the women back to safety.

On Sunday, a group of 11 women was also forced to turn back by a large group of male devotees.

At the end of September, India’s Supreme Court struck down a ban on females aged between 10 and 50 from entering the temple for Ayyappa, the god of growth. The site has since become a battleground for traditionalists and female rights activists. Women have tried to enter the shrine on numerous occasions since the ban was lifted, but they have been met with large crowds that prevented them from reaching the temple.

The god Ayyappa is considered to be celibate, so women of menstruating age were banned from entering his temple as they are considered by traditionalists to be impure and a temptation.
