  • Rep. Nancy Mace says there's "a lot of pressure" on Republicans to impeach President Biden.

Rep. Nancy Mace says there's pressure on Republicans to vote to impeach President Biden if the party wins the midterms and gains control of the House. 

Mace was on NBC's Meet The Press on Sunday, speaking with host Chuck Todd who asked: "Do you expect an impeachment vote against President Biden if Republicans take over the House?"

The South Carolina congresswoman answered, "there's a lot of pressure on Republicans to have that vote, to put that legislation forward. I think that is something that some folks are considering."

To which Todd responded, simply: "Wow."

On Wednesday, Rep. Adam Kinzinger said a GOP-majority Congress might try to impeach the president every week. Kinzinger was referring to Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has made impeaching Biden part of her official platform.

Last year, several Republicans filed impeachment articles criticizing Biden's withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan, his immigration policies, and his administration's eviction moratorium.

When asked by Todd how she would vote if impeachment was on the floor, Mace said she would look at the evidence and vote constitutionally. 

"I will not vote for impeachment of any president if I feel that due process has been stripped away for anyone," she told Todd. 

Mace said if the party chooses to hold this vote, she believes it will be divisive. "Which is why I pushed back on it personally when I hear folks saying they're going to file articles of impeachment in the House," she said.

While Mace voted against impeaching former President Donald Trump, she was critical of his role on January 6, telling CNN that Trump's "entire legacy was wiped out" in the aftermath of the Capitol riots.

Before January 6, Mace was a supporter of Trump's and even worked for his campaign in 2016.

During the interview with NBC, Todd asked the congresswoman if she would back Trump's presidential bid in 2024.

"I'm going to support whomever Republicans nominate in '24," she said.

Representatives for Mace did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

  • "Clean cooking" could help the climate but needs far more funding, a UN-backed group says.

The modern stove probably doesn't make you think about protecting forests. A group backed by the United Nations wants to change that in hopes of unlocking billions of dollars in funding for a little-known climate solution.

Some 2.4 billion people in the developing world lack access to "clean cooking," instead preparing food on wood and charcoal fire pits or inefficient kerosene stoves. The carbon-dioxide emissions are on par with the entire airline industry — about 2% of the global total — and exposure to soot shaves years off the lives of those who cook, who are often women and children.

There is also a cost to nature: More than one-third of the wood harvested for fuel isn't replenished, which contributes to forest degradation and threatens growing investment in nature-based climate solutions, according to a report out this week from the Clean Cooking Alliance.

"Lack of access to clean cooking is the most underinvested health and environmental problem in the world," Jillene Connors Belopolsky, the alliance's chief of staff and chief external-affairs officer, said. "It's historically been viewed as a women's issue."

The alliance works to spur adoption of stoves that meet international standards for indoor air quality, including those that use liquefied petroleum gas, biogas or ethanol. Electric stoves and pressure cookers also make the list.

Even though liquefied petroleum gas is a fossil fuel, it pollutes less than wood and coal and is the most cost-effective solution in sub-Saharan Africa, where the vast majority of households lack access to clean cooking and electricity, Belopolsky said. Farming communities also offer an opportunity in the region because animal and crop waste can be converted into biogas and ethanol.

But scaling clean cooking is hamstrung by a lack of financing from wealthier countries and the private sector, similar to most climate efforts in the "global south," which faces the direst impacts of global warming but has contributed the least to the crisis. Investment has hovered around $ 130 million annually, well below the $ 4.5 billion needed, according to estimates.

Connecting clean cooking to nature could unlock more funding. About $ 133 billion flows into forest protection and restoration, sustainable land management, and other nature-based projects, with calls to triple that sum this decade. If a fraction of that was funneled into clean cooking, it could make a big impact, Belopolsky said.

The Clean Cooking Alliance has advised more developing countries to put clean cooking in their climate-action plans and says investors and corporations should consider how the transition to cleaner cooking can make their investments less risky.

"You can't tell people they can't use the natural resources around them to feed their families without providing an affordable alternative," Belopolsky said. "If we invest billions of dollars to protect or restore forests or implement regenerative agricultural practices, but communities that live around those projects don't have access to clean cooking and are collecting wood, that's counterproductive and a risk to that investment."

There are signs the message is resonating. Between 2017 and 2020, the revenue that clean-cooking companies made from selling carbon offsets grew by 21 times. In 2020, Switzerland and Peru were the first countries to strike a carbon-offset deal under the framework of the Paris climate accord, which included clean-cooking projects. Switzerland provided the finance and eventually plans to count the emissions reductions toward its climate goals.

We’ve seen examples of robots mimicking humans, but now we’re seeing robots that can autonomously teach themselves how to handle objects. Festo has developed a flexible robotic hand that uses artificial intelligence to deduce how to manipulate an item with its fingers. Such self-learning technology should prove vital towards building robots that can learn to execute tasks by themselves in the workplace, at home and pretty much anywhere.

The BionicSoftHand determines how to perform tasks through trial and error, but without a tedious, time-sapping manual process. Once engineers give the robot an objective, 3D cameras and depth sensors create a virtual copy of an object. The hand’s AI then runs myriad simulations to help it quickly figure out what to do. In a demo video, the robot determines how to roll a dodecahedron between its fingers without dropping it. Without AI, it could take months for the robot to learn how to do so.

AI is only one part of the project. The robot has a soft hand, which means it can interact safely with humans.

The fingers are made from 3D textile-knitted fabric (using elastic and high-strength fibers), with tactile sensors and a flexible circuit board. There are bellows inside to move the joints as they fill and empty with air. Pneumatic swivels at the base of the thumb and index fingers allow them to move from side to side, while there are two dozen proportional piezo valves in what’s essentially the wrist to make the whole thing work. Festo says the construction of the hand allows it to have 12 degrees of freedom, allowing it to manipulate objects with dexterity.

We’re likely a while away from seeing this tech in factories and classrooms. Machine learning means it will improve over time and, as both AI and the hardware advances, robots like BionicSoftHand should figure out how to handle even more nimble tasks with autonomy.

While debutant Jhye Richardson was outstanding on day one, leading Michael Vaughan to call him “number one on the team sheet for Edgbaston” for the first Ashes Test, Cummins’ first 10-wicket haul in Tests has heaped the pressure on Starc to hold onto his position leading the bowling attack.

Kerry O’Keeffe said today was the day Pat Cummins arrived on the international stage.

“He arrived today Pat Cummins,” Kerry O’Keeffe said. “He’s got his Test bowling average to 23, that is elite. He brings so much, apart from the fact he’s now bowling fuller. He is the complete package at the moment.”

Starc, however, took just two Sri Lankan lower order wickets in the first innings with no strikes in the second innings.

Cummins has long been the first change bowler behind Starc and Josh Hazlewood, while Richardson also kept Cummins away from the new ball in the first innings.

After taking a wicket with his last ball on day two, Cummins opened proceedings on day three and was fresh, taking his second wicket with his second ball of the day.

He had three scalps before a run was scored off him and soon had a fourth in his opening spell.

Shane Warne has not been able to hide his dismay at the bowling tactics throughout the summer but even when he’s not in commentary he words echo loudly.

Warne, who has been a vocal critic of Starc this summer, said it was good to see Cummins start with the new ball in hand.

Warne was critical of Starc’s new ball bowling throughout the Indian series, starting with what he called an “atrocious” second new ball spell in Adelaide with the criticism increasing throughout the summer.

Cummins has 80 wickets at 24.51 with three five-wicket hauls in his Test career while at the same stage of their careers Dennis Lillee had 83 at 22.75 with four five-fors and Glenn McGrath had 71 wickets at 27.72 with four five-fors.

After today’s performance, Cummins has 90 wickets at 22.47.

Speaking in commentary for Fox Cricket, Brett Lee said Cummins deserves to be Australia’s spearhead.

“He’s done the hard yards, he’s worked so hard on his fitness, he’s worked very hard on his batting and what happens when you’re a bowler and you get injured is that it allows you to work on your batting,” he said.

“He’s the complete package right now, Pat Cummins. If we get Mitchell Starc firing, get him back to where we know he can bowl, then Australia have got a brilliant attack.

“I like Jhye Richardson, I like Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins. At the moment Mitchell Starc is not at his best, we all know that, he probably knows that as well, I think it’s time now to give the new ball to Pat Cummins.

“I think he’s earned that right. I was a bit surprised that he was leapfrogged by Jhye Richardson, I thought they would have gone with Starc and Pat Cummins.”

But what about Josh Hazlewood?

“Well, we’re spoiled for choice,” Lee said.

“Hazlewood, 140km/h and a lot like Glenn (McGrath) as well. You’ve got guys who can do the role of the great bowlers of the past and you’ve got guys who’ve got raw pace. This guy has got raw pace and raw pace is something you can’t turn your back on.”

Ian Healy said the decision should come down to the new Australian vice-captain.

“As long as he’s happy with the new ball and he’s really comfortable, he’s the man,” Healy said.

“Then Starc can forget about swinging it as much but just use his pace, create some pressure at the top of off (stump), get his length right so it might go on to hit the stumps.”

Starc told Mike Hussey on Fox Cricket he has a simple plan to get back in form.

“(I’ve got to) trust myself and back myself,” Starc said. “I’ve had 50 Tests now, it’s no fluke. I haven’t forgotten how to bowl, I just need to get that feeling back.”

Lee said Starc shouldn’t be lost to the Australia set-up despite his struggles at the moment.

“The reason I love Mitchell Starc is I know what he can do,” Lee said.

“He can bowl at 155km/h and swing the ball back and knock someone’s front pad off but at the moment, he’s lost his way a little bit.

“There’s a lot of people telling him how to bowl, they all mean well and I’ve been there many times Heals where you just lose your edge, whether it’s your action, whether you’re carrying an injury and also confidence too. Sometimes your mind gets clouded.”
