Donald Trump was the 45th president of the United States.

  • Donald Trump was the first billionaire to enter the White House when he became the 45th President.
  • Forbes estimates he is worth $ 3 billion, with a property empire including Mar-a-Lago in Florida.
  • Other assets he controls include hotels, office buildings, and golf courses.

Donald Trump went from real-estate magnate to reality-TV star to being elected the 45th president of the United States.

Worth $ 3 billion, according to a Forbes tally of all the assets Trump owns, he is the first billionaire to enter the White House.

Trump's fortune mainly stems from his property-and-hospitality businesses.

On Wednesday New York's attorney general filed a sweeping civil suit against Trump, his business, and his three eldest children. Letitia James said Trump "falsely inflated his net worth by billions of dollars" and "repeatedly and persistently manipulated the value of assets to induce banks to lend money to the Trump Organization."

Here's what Trump's portfolio of golf courses, luxury cars, hotels, yachts, a vineyard, and aircraft looks like.

Katie Canales and Katie Warren contributed reporting to a previous version of this article.

Donald Trump, 76, is worth an estimated $ 3 billion, according to Forbes, after falling by $ 1 billion during the pandemic. His holdings include several golf courses, hotels, luxury cars, yachts, a vineyard, planes, and helicopters.

The former president's fortune peaked in 2016, when he was worth an estimated $ 4.5 billion.

His wealth is centered around his commercial-real-estate holdings, which were worth an estimated $ 1.9 billion before the COVID-19 pandemic and after deducting debt, per Forbes.

While running for the presidency, Trump spent $ 66 million of his own money to help fund his campaign, according to campaign-finance disclosures examined by Reuters.

Russian President Vladimir Putin.

    • Vladimir Putin on Wednesday escalated his war in Ukraine with a direct threat of nuclear warfare.
    • But experts say the threat indicates that Putin is running out of military options.
    • Putin is increasingly "aware of how limited his actual military options are," one expert said.

Vladimir Putin on Wednesday threatened to use nuclear weapons in a brazen escalation of his war in Ukraine.

But the Russian president's audacious warning is less a show of legitimate strength, and more a sign that Russia's military is faltering, according to experts.

On Wednesday, more than seven months into the war, Putin announced a partial military mobilization in an effort to address Russia's manpower problem amid a spate of recent Ukrainian victories. During his televised speech, the president also baselessly accused the West of threatening to use nuclear weapons and responded with an acknowledgment of Russia's own nuclear arsenal.

"To those who allow themselves to make such statements about Russia, I would like to remind you that our country also has various means of destruction, and for some components more modern than those of the NATO countries," he said.

"And if the territorial integrity of our country is threatened, we will certainly use all the means at our disposal to protect Russia and our people. This is not a bluff."

Putin's nuclear threats are a scare tactic aimed at Ukraine's allies.

Amid mounting military losses, deteriorating troop morale, and shifting public sentiment, it makes sense why Putin would turn to his warheads, said Simon Miles, an assistant professor at Duke University's Sanford School of Public Policy and a historian of the Soviet Union and US-Soviet relations.

"The poor performance of Russia's military on the battlefield in Ukraine has been an important reminder that any claim to great power status Russia may have is predicated almost entirely on its arsenal of nuclear weapons," Miles said.

Putin's message, Miles posited, is also directed at Ukraine's global supporters.

"Putin has tried and failed many a time to break the resolve of Ukraine's supporters, and his latest threats are no different," Miles said. "It is clear that he is growing more and more aware of how limited his actual military options are in this war."

Ukraine earlier this month amassed one of its biggest victories yet, launching two concurrent offensives in the northeast and south in an effective effort to reclaim occupied territory. Reports from the front lines indicated that Russian troops fled as the country's military buckled under Ukraine's powerful performance.

"The Russians are dispirited, disorganized, and unmotivated, just trying to stay alive," Robert English, a professor at the University of Southern California who studies Russia, the Soviet Union, and Eastern Europe, told Insider. "The Ukrainian fighting spirit and the American arms industry have teamed up to thwart [Putin's] plans in a big way."

Russian prospects remain grim, especially given the West's ongoing military support to Ukraine. The country's most recent offensive, while executed by Ukrainian forces, was made possible thanks to US and UK intelligence, strategy, and weapons.

"As long as the west is supplying more and better weapons — and we are supplying more and better weapons — the pressure on Russian forces is only going to grow," English said.

A Russian nuclear missile is seen during a parade in Moscow.
A Russian nuclear missile rolls along Red Square during the military parade marking the 75th anniversary of Nazi defeat, on June 24, 2020 in Moscow, Russia.

Experts think it unlikely that Putin will act on his threat.

Putin's threat of "civilization-extinguishing capabilities," as Miles put it, doesn't mean the US or any other Ukrainian ally should turn and run.

"It is one thing to make threats — it is another to actually put these weapons to use in a way which serves the Kremlin's goal," Miles said.

A Russian demonstration of a nuclear weapon would be unlikely to break the West's will, he said, and could even bolster it further. Meanwhile, using a weapon in Ukraine itself would have devastating consequences for Ukrainian troops — but Russian soldiers fighting in the country would pay the price as well.

Multiple experts previously told Insider that Russia was unlikely to use nuclear weapons, even if it made the threat. Miles added that the logistics alone make the prospect low-risk.

"Russian nuclear weapons are staged in hardened shelters across the country, including in the far west near Ukraine," he said. "The process of transitioning to readiness, mating warheads to delivery platforms, would generate a great deal of observable phenomena for U.S. intelligence and an opportunity for Washington to make it explicit to the Kremlin just how bad an idea that would be."

Then-US President Donald Trump arrives with then- Vice President Mike Pence for a Make America Great Again rally at Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City, Michigan on November 2, 2020.

  • Liz Cheney in a searing Monday speech skewered Trump and members of the Republican Party.
  • Cheney suggested that Mike Pence was "essentially" the acting president on January 6, 2021.
  • "White House staff knew it, and so did every Republican and Democratic leader in Washington," she said.

GOP Rep. Liz Cheney delivered a searing indictment of former President Donald Trump and members of the Republican Party on Monday in one of her first speeches since her primary defeat last month.

Cheney this week gave the Walter Berns Constitution Day lecture at AEI, a center-right economic think tank in Washington DC, warning that America's freedom is in a perilous position and urging the country to hold Trump accountable for his role in the January 6 Capitol riot.

Cheney, as the top Republican on the House Select Committee investigating the insurrection, has long been one of the few outspoken GOP critics of Trump — a stance that ultimately cost her her congressional seat after Trump spent months propping up her Republican challenger.

But Cheney on Monday did not dwell on her political woes, opting instead to further rebuke Trump's actions, or lack thereof, on January 6, 2021.

"I hope you all heard the testimony in our select committee hearings of Pat Cipollone, corroborated by Cassidy Hutchinson and others on President Trump's White House staff," she said. "Testimony that President Trump was the only person who refused to respond to desperate calls for help, even from his own congressional allies. He refused to come to their aid."

Several witnesses, including Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the committee that they were puzzled by Trump's inaction as rioters stormed the US capitol on January 6.

In her speech on Monday, Cheney suggested that Trump's second-in-command, Mike Pence, stepped into his superior's role.

"If you watched our hearings closely, you understand that Vice President Mike Pence was essentially the president for most of that day," she said. "White House staff knew it, and so did every other Republican and Democratic leader in Washington."

After Trump assailed Pence on Twitter for refusing to reject Electoral College votes for President Joe Biden, rioters throughout the Capitol began chanting "hang Mike Pence." Hutchinson testified earlier this summer that Trump defended the insurrectionists' call for violence, saying that "Mike deserves it."

In his recent autobiography,  "So Help Me God," Pence wrote that he was not afraid, during the events of January 6, but angry.

"I was angry at what I saw, how it desecrated the seat of our democracy and dishonored the patriotism of millions of our supporters, who would never do such a thing here or anywhere else," Pence wrote.

According to "The Divider," a new book by Peter Baker of The New York Times and Susan Glasser of The New Yorker, Trump has said he would not pick Pence to be his running mate if he launches a 2024 campaign.

"It would be totally inappropriate" to pick Pence as his running mate, Trump said, according to the book. "Mike committed political suicide," the former told Glasser and Baker.

In her speech, Cheney also urged people to rewatch testimony from the committee's summer hearings and listen to what several of Trump's former officials said about the then-president's post-2020 actions while under oath.

"How could Trump's refusal to act, his betrayal or our Republic, of our Constitution, of our principles, come with no cost?" she said.

Trump thought that he, as president, could prosecute Clinton and Comey, book says https://briefnews.eu/trump-thought-that-he-as-president-could-prosecute-clinton-and-comey-book-says/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-thought-that-he-as-president-could-prosecute-clinton-and-comey-book-says/#respond Tue, 20 Sep 2022 00:16:41 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/trump-thought-that-he-as-president-could-prosecute-clinton-and-comey-book-says/ Donald Trump
Former President Donald Trump.

  • Donald Trump once threatened to use his role as president to prosecute his political foes.
  • A White House attorney had to explain to the then president that he had no such power.
  • The episode was chronicled in "The Divider," a new book obtained by Insider ahead of its publication.

Former President Donald Trump once required a civics lesson from White House counsel on the limits of his power after he suggested that as president, he could — and would — prosecute his political enemies, according to a new book from Peter Baker of The New York Times and Susan Glasser of The New Yorker.

Throughout his tenure, Trump had a penchant for skewering his foes via Twitter takedowns and public lashings. But some of his adversaries irked the then-president so much so that he sought a more permanent form of revenge against them.

According to "The Divider," which Insider obtained ahead of its Sept. 20 publication, Trump frequently pressured Former US Attorneys General Jeff Sessions and Bill Barr to bring criminal charges against his opponents, including Hillary Clinton and former FBI director James Comey.

"At one point in the spring of 2018, Trump instructed [former White House Counsel] Don McGahn to direct Sessions to prosecute Clinton and Comey and, if the attorney general refused, said he would do it himself as president," Baker and Glasser wrote. "McGahn had to explain that the president had no such power."

"You can't prosecute anybody," McGahn told Trump, according to the book.

McGahn followed up his explanation with an "extraordinary memo" explaining to Trump the illegal nature of using his position as president to go after his political enemies, comparing such a move to that of a dictator, according to the book.

"'Congress could seek to 'impeach and remove' the president if it concluded that he abused the power of intervening in a criminal matter,' McGahn wrote, using boldface and italics to emphasize his point," Glasser and Baker wrote.

A spokesperson for Trump did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

Several former Trump White House and government officials have since recounted similar stories that suggest the former president was unfamiliar with the logistics of his newfound position.

Earlier this year, Barr said Trump didn't have a "good idea" of what the roles of the president or Justice Department entitled throughout his time in office.

In the 2021 CIA publication, "Getting to Know the President," author John L. Helgerson, a former intelligence officer, said Trump was the most difficult incoming president to brief, and an August New York Times report cited intelligence officials who said they often withheld information from Trump for fear of the "damage" he might do if he knew.

Included in "The Divider" is an anecdote about Trump's former chief of staff John Kelly, whom the authors said purchased a book "to understand the president's particular psychoses" in an attempt to cope with the former president's erratic behavior.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) speaks in front of the U.S. Capitol on July 28, 2022.

  • Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez shared doubts about a woman of color being elected president one day.
  • "I admit to sometimes believing that I live in a country that would never let that happen," she told GQ.
  • She said her time in Congress has reinforced to her that "so many people in this country hate women."

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in a new interview spoke candidly about her political future, expressing doubts that she or another woman of color could become president because of the "misogyny" and "patriarchy" she says she's endured first-hand as a congresswoman.

"I admit to sometimes believing that I live in a country that would never let that happen," she told GQ in an interview published Wednesday.

The congresswoman said her experience in Congress "has given me a front-row seat to how deeply and unconsciously, as well as consciously, so many people in this country hate women."

"They hate women of color," the New York lawmaker continued. "People ask me questions about the future. And realistically, I can't even tell you if I'm going to be alive in September. And that weighs very heavily on me."

Since Ocasio-Cortez shocked the country by winning her primary in 2018 and seized the national spotlight, she's experienced hostility from her fellow colleagues on both sides of the aisle. In July 2020, then-Republican Rep. Ted Yoho of Florida reportedly called her a "fucking bitch." Last November, Republican Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona tweeted out an edited anime video showing him killing Ocasio-Cortez. And in July, a conservative comedian sexually harassed Ocasio-Cortez using racist language outside the Capitol building.

Ocasio-Cortez has also become a target of right-wing media and conservative circles, and has faced a barrage of death threats. She's said she feared being raped and killed as rioters stormed the the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

"It's not just the right wing. Misogyny transcends political ideology: left, right, center. This grip of patriarchy affects all of us, not just women; men," she told GQ.

Ocasio-Cortez has repeatedly dismissed questions about a future presidential run. She told GQ that she battles an "inner conflict" between the presidency being unattainable for someone like her and her belief that "anything is possible."

"Sometimes little girls will say, 'Oh, I want you to be president,' or things like that," she told GQ. "It's very difficult for me to talk about because it provokes a lot of inner conflict in that I never want to tell a little girl what she can't do. And I don't want to tell young people what is not possible. I've never been in the business of doing that."

(Welcome to The Daily Stream, an ongoing series in which the /Film team shares what they’ve been watching, why it’s worth checking out, and where you can stream it.)

The Movie: “President Wolfman”

Where You Can Stream It: TubiTV

The Pitch: Being the President of the United States is a tough job, but for John Wolfman, his political problems are much worse than anything Watergate or even the January 6th insurrection could have brought to the table. President Wolfman is in an uphill battle to prevent his opponents from selling the United States to China through a controversial “Chimerica” international merger bill, save his son Bobby from being killed by his murderous Vice President, judge a Miss Teen Beauty Pageant, solve a mysterious series of brutal murders throughout the capitol, avoid both a crazed scientist and a vindictive Smokey the Bear, and try to hide the fact he transforms into a werewolf during every full moon.

If “President Wolfman” sounds absolutely bananas, it’s by design, but unlike other ridiculous horror comedies, “President Wolfman” was made without ever shooting a single frame of footage. Crafted entirely from recycled stock and public domain footage, the creatives behind “President Wolfman” wrote a new script, score, and digitally enhanced all of the footage to create a movie all their own. Talk about eco-friendly filmmaking.

Why It’s Essential Viewing

I first caught “President Wolfman” at the bi-annual Cinema Wasteland Horror, Drive-In and Grindhouse Movie Convention, knowing absolutely nothing about the film other than the premise of seeing a movie made entirely out of recycled footage. Most of “President Wolfman” is made from clips of the truly abysmal Dean Stockwell film “The Werewolf of Washington,” (also available on Tubi) a 1973 horror “comedy” meant to satirize the Nixon presidency.

The film uses clips from “Werewolf of Washington” alongside vintage international Coca-Cola commercials, short films you’d probably see in a 1983 health class, old PSAs with cheap production value — all Frankensteined together to create the final product. Filmmaker Mike Davis claims that “President Wolfman” comprises 112 different pieces of public domain and stock footage, with the redubbed script miraculously bringing it all together.

“President Wolfman” was made with tongue planted firmly in cheek, with envelope-pushing (and often offensively racist) comedy bits that somehow manage to become a genuinely clever satire of American culture, politics, and B-movie filmmaking. “President Wolfman” isn’t trying to offend for the sake of being shocking, but to point out how ridiculously problematic the B-movie genre often was. It’s as if someone had an AI binge-watch the entirety of “Mystery Science Theater 3000” and try to generate a movie of their own using the available footage, and it somehow works beautifully.

What Makes A Film, Anyway?

“President Wolfman” is by no means the first “green film,” with even prolific filmmaker (and disgusting excuse for a human being) Woody Allen redubbing the Japanese film “Kokusai himitsu keisatsu: Kagi no kagi” to make his debut feature, “What’s Up, Tiger Lily?” While “President Wolfman” could be easily written off as an experimental gimmick, it instead turns into a remarkable exercise in the limitless possibilities of indie horror. It’s clear that Davis put genuine thought and talent into crafting this hidden gem by hiring a genuinely talented cast of voice-over artists to provide the dub, including Marc Evan Jackson (“The Good Place,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”) who stars as John Wolfman.

A film like “President Wolfman” is worth seeing if only for the sheer audacity of its existence. The footage does not edit together seamlessly, the visuals vary wildly in quality, and in no way does the dub even remotely look close to matching the actors’ mouths, but in a weird way, it only adds to the film’s charm. People often ask for a good horror comedy to watch with a group of friends so everyone can laugh, cheer, and throw popcorn, and this is precisely that brand of movie.

“President Wolfman” asks the audience to question what exactly defines a “film,” and begs us to find something to love in even the most poorly received and forgotten films of yesteryear. There’s value in absolutely everything that has ever been committed to screen, as long as you know how to use it. “President Wolfman” breathed new life into a mess of footage most people have pushed to the margins, and turned it into something wholly unique. If that doesn’t speak to the ingenuity of indie horror, I don’t know what else will.

President Donald Trump is ready to smile for more voters: He’ll participate in another town hall event airing next Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 8/7c on Sinclair-owned CW stations, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The event, which is slated to take place at the White House, will be moderated by former Fox News host Eric Bolling and will feature an interview with Trump as well as questions from audience members.

“This election is one of the most important in modern history, and voters are still looking for insight into the many issues that are impacting their daily lives,” Bolling said in a statement. “We aim to give Sinclair viewers the answers to their most burning questions and look forward to getting a detailed view on what the next four years would look like under President Trump.”

This week, Trump took part in a controversial NBC town hall and faced questions from undecided voters, with the event airing up against an ABC town hall with Trump’s opponent, Democratic nominee Joe Biden. (Biden ultimately won the ratings battle, pulling in 13.9 million viewers to Trump’s 13.1 million.) Trump and Biden are also expected to meet again for a third presidential debate next Thursday, Oct. 22, but that’s still up in the air following Trump’s recent coronavirus diagnosis. (A second debate was slated to take place this week virtually, but Trump rejected the virtual format, leading to the dueling town halls.)

Sinclair Broadcast Group operates 190 TV stations across the country, including more than 40 CW stations in markets like Baltimore, Cincinnati, Milwaukee, Minneapolis and Nashville. The company has been accused of coloring its news with a distinct right-wing bias; earlier this year, Sinclair scrapped plans to feature controversial virologist Dr. Judy Mikovits, who accused Dr. Fauci of manufacturing coronaviruses and shipping them to Wuhan, China.

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have tested positive for coronavirus.

“Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19,” POTUS announced on Twitter late Thursday. “We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!”

In her own tweet, Melania Trump added, “We are feeling good & I have postponed all upcoming engagements,” Melania Trump wrote. “Please be sure you are staying safe & we will all get through this together.”

The news comes after Trump spent much of the past year downplaying the severity of COVID-19. At Tuesday’s presidential debate, he mocked rival Joe Biden for wearing a mask as often as he does. To date, COVID-19 has killed more than 205,000 people nationwide.

Earlier Thursday, the White House confirmed that senior Trump advisor Hope Hicks, who has traveled with her boss throughout the week, tested positive for coronavirus.

Scrapped black-ish Season 4 Episode Criticizing President Donald Trump Finally Available on Hulu https://briefnews.eu/scrapped-black-ish-season-4-episode-criticizing-president-donald-trump-finally-available-on-hulu/ https://briefnews.eu/scrapped-black-ish-season-4-episode-criticizing-president-donald-trump-finally-available-on-hulu/#respond Mon, 10 Aug 2020 20:08:09 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/scrapped-black-ish-season-4-episode-criticizing-president-donald-trump-finally-available-on-hulu/

The black-ish episode ABC originally didn’t want you to see is now available for viewing on Hulu.

The network shelved the Season 4 installment, titled “Please, Baby, Please,” in 2018. The ep features Anthony Anderson’s Dre improvising a bedtime story to his then-infant son Devante. During the tale, Dre expresses many of his concerns about the state of the union one year after Donald Trump — whom he calls “the Shady King” — was elected president. Another scene finds Dre and eldest son Junior arguing over the rights of athletes to take a knee during the national anthem at football games.

“One of the things that has always made black-ish so special is how it deftly examines delicate social issues in a way that simultaneously entertains and educates,” an ABC rep said in a statement at the time. “However, on this episode there were creative differences we were unable to resolve.”

On his Instagram feed Monday, series creator Kenya Barris announced the network’s about-face, calling “Please, Baby, Please” “22 minutes of television that I was, and still am, incredibly proud of.”

He goes on to say that he asked ABC to reconsider making the episode available to stream. “Recognizing the importance of this moment,” he wrote, “they listened and agreed.”

Read Barris’ statement in full below, then scroll down to watch a trailer for the episode:

In November 2017, we made an episode of “black-ish” entitled “Please, Baby, Please.” We were one year post-election and coming to the end of a year that left us, like many Americans, grappling with the state of our country and anxious about its future. Those feelings poured onto the page, becoming 22 minutes of television that I was, and still am, incredibly proud of. “Please, Baby, Please” didn’t make it to air that season and, while much has been speculated about its contents, the episode has never been seen publicly… until now.

I’m excited to share that “Please, Baby, Please” is now available on Hulu. Following the re-airing of “Juneteenth” and “Hope,” I asked Walt Disney Television to revisit making the episode available. Recognizing the importance of this moment, they listened and agreed.

I cannot wait for everyone to finally see the episode for themselves and, as was the case nearly three years ago, we hope it inspires some much-needed conversation — not only about what we were grappling with then or how it led to where we are now, but conversations about where we want our country to go moving forward and, most importantly, how we get there together.

Thank you to ABC Entertainment for allowing this moment to happen. And thank you to the entire ‘black-ish’ family for never shying away from tough conversations, making telling stories like this possible.
