After a delay in light of a Japanese earthquake, Nintendo’s latest Direct video presentation finally went live on Thursday evening, and it included confirmations of long-rumored games and ports for the Nintendo Switch—along with a surprise NES controller pack launching next week. Coming September 18, the same day as the new paid Nintendo Switch Online service, the NES Controllers two-pack will be sold exclusively at Nintendo.com for $ 59.99—and you’ll need to be a paying Switch Online subscriber to place an order. These controllers connect wirelessly to Switch consoles, and they also include latches to hook to the sides of a Switch console, but Nintendo advertises this solely as a controller-charging feature. Meaning, you won’t be able to use these NES controllers in traditional Switch games—particularly when you might prefer a traditional D-pad over the Joy-Cons’ clicky buttons.

Earlier today at Gamescom, NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang showed off its latest graphics cards, which are built on its new Turing architecture to be the company’s fastest GeForce cards ever. Moving on from teraflops, NVIDIA is now talking about GigaRays, which measure its ability to handle the ray tracing technology that will produce better lighting and effects than we’ve ever seen before. Whether you’re looking forward to a $ 1,200 RTX 2080 Ti or an $ 800 RTX 2080 (or just waiting for prices to come down) for your next gaming PC build, our video can show you the best of today’s highlights in a bit less than 14 minutes.

For the sixth straight year, Nintendo will forgo the traditional pre-E3 press conference in favor of a livestreamed Nintendo Direct video presentation. We’ll be on hand to deliver all the news straight from Nintendo starting at 9am PDT (12pm EDT, 4pm UTC) on Tuesday, June 12.
Nintendo has made no secret that the Nintendo Switch edition of the Super Smash Bros. fighting-game series will be a prominent focus of its E3 activities this year, so expect to hear a lot of details about that effort. We also wouldn’t be surprised to hear a bit more about upcoming Switch entries in the Pokemon and Metroid Prime series, which have been under radio silence since very brief teases at last year’s E3.
Outside of the first-party efforts, a credible leak suggests a Switch port of Fortnite will lead a lineup of coming indie and third-party ports for the system that includes Dragon Ball FighterZ, Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, Killer Queen Black, Paladins, and Overcooked 2. Don’t be surprised if that list is at least a bit incomplete, too.

Ferrari convened a gathering of dealers and special customers recently, and presented them with some of the specs on that special, monstrous version of the Ferrari488 that’s been percolating in public for nearly a year. Someone in the audience snapped pics of a few slides, those pics made their way to Ferrari Photo Page, and now we can assemble the loose bolts of rumor into something approaching a real vehicle. Not just “a” vehicle, but the most powerful Ferrari V8 the company has ever made. Ferrari uses the 488 GTB as the base for its Ferrari Challenge racing series; now the Italian carmaker’s returned the Challenge motorsport lessons to the production car.
First, the coupe almost certainly won’t be called 488 GTO. Ferrari owners in the Ferrari Chat forum have been wheedling their dealers for information, and several contributors to an 80-page thread attested that even the dealers don’t know the name of the coupe yet. The presentation refers to it as “New V8 Sport Special Series.”
The slides also note the “highest horsepower increase vs donor car for a V8 special series,” so watchers expect more than 700 horsepower from the 488’s 3.9-liter twin-turbo engine; production numbers come in at 660 horsepower and 561 pound-feet of torque. The engine making all that fuss is an evolution of the racing unit in the Challenge car, is ten percent lighter than the production car motor, and can produce a “unique track-like sound” – as if Ferraris haven’t been doing that since the 1960s.
The coming coupe gets more carbon fiber than ever seen in a Ferrari production car: the hood, bumpers, and large rear spoiler come in resin-soaked cloth, as do the dashboard, center tunnel, and the 20-inch wheels. Those wheels, dressed in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 rubber, are 40-percent lighter than stock alloys. The cabin floor will be made of aluminum, with added lightness courtesy of less sound deadening and, thinner fixtures like side windows, and the omission of non-essential parts like the glove compartment.
New S-ducts in front and a GTE-inspired rear diffuser help increase aero efficiency by 20 percent over the standard 488. The “extremely direct steering ratio,” “new race gearshift strategy” programmed into the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and new Sideslip management settings will contribute to either track-day superiority or overtime pay for the track-day tow-truck driver. The Ferrari Chat discussion says the vehicle won’t have an active air brake, but the options sheet might offer a lithium battery and titanium exhaust.
Apparently, dealers have forwarded a set of names to Ferrari for purchase consideration, and the braintrust in Maranello will decide which applicants will see this particular red. The rest of us will likely get our first look at it at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

(Welcome to The Soapbox, the space where we get personal, political, and opinionated about anything and everything. In this edition: AMC Theaters admits that they don’t care about masking, and why this is bad.)
We’re aware there are terrible things happening in our country right now, and yes, complaining about movie theater screens is inconsequential in the grand scheme of things. But damn it, instead of getting overwhelmed by those things, cinephiles occasionally want to lose ourselves in a terrific theatrical experience. And when the world’s largest theater chain has basically admitted that they no longer care about the way their movies are presented to audiences, that’s worth grumbling about.
Chances are pretty high that when you go see a movie, you see it in an AMC Theater. That company has the largest market share of American theaters and is the biggest movie theater chain on the planet. You may assume that because of this lofty position of power they hold in the industry, AMC might want to set a good example by exhibiting movies in the best possible quality in an attempt to lure more customers; after all, attendance is declining and while theaters make the majority of their money in concessions, humans are still a necessary component of their business model.
But as you may have gleaned from this article’s headline, that’s not the case.
Unsurprising but still not great: AMC now officially has a no-masking policy and they're happy to say that. pic.twitter.com/jvBbG2W7Ov
— Vadim Rizov (@vrizov) November 6, 2017
Filmmaker Mike Williamson took a photo calling out AMC’s lack of masking in one of their theaters, and instead of the chain seeing that complaint and ensuring their paying customer that they’d work to correct the problem, they essentially admitted that they simply no longer care about the way their movies are exhibited.
For those who don’t know anything about masking, I recommend reading this ScreenCrush article from last year. Here’s the gist: masking is the process of expanding or shrinking the borders of a screen to allow a film to fill the entire screen. Movies are most filmed in one of two different aspect ratios (“full” or “scope”), and most theaters are equipped to present either on any given screen, traditionally using motorized curtains to completely surround the image. This is a key part of the presentation because it allows the audience to have a much more immersive experience. Lately, though, some theaters haven’t been bothering to mask their movies as often, resulting in experiences like Mike Williamson’s, in which distracting gray bars are visible throughout the entire movie.
As Williamson pointed out in a subsequent tweet, letterboxing in a theater gives the appearance that you’re watching something on a television screen at home – and with the rise of digital projection, complaints about movies looking like TV have been flying around for years already. This certainly isn’t going to help, and for AMC to cop to their lack of masking and try to hide behind the “clean lines and edges” of their digital projectors is embarrassing. Are they actively trying to drive consumers away at this point?
How can a company acknowledge something that looks like complete garbage, nod and smile, openly state that they’re making it look like that on purpose, and then charge you a premium price for your ticket? Unless there’s a big enough uproar about this that AMC reverse this policy, audiences have lost yet another battle in the ongoing war of simply trying to have a high quality theatrical experience. When the world’s largest theater chain is so open about their disdain for presentation, it’s no wonder people aren’t going to the movies as much anymore.

Citigroup on Tuesday held its first investor day since the 2008, signaling that its long road to recovery since the financial crisis is largely over and that the bank has hit its stride.
“We have improved the quality and consistency of our earnings and are reaching our stated goal of being an indisputably strong and stable institution,” Citi CEO Michael Corbat said during his opening remarks. “As I’ve said, our restructuring is over.”
Investors liked what they heard, as Citi stock closed the day up nearly 3%.
They also heard one word over and over again throughout the day, and it helps explain how Citi orchestrated its comeback: “network.”
The word, which refers to the company’s presence in 98 markets around the word, was mentioned 23 times alone in the presentation for the bank’s Institutional Clients Group (ICG), which is its most profitable business, accounting for 70% of Citi’s $ 15 billion in profits and nearly half its revenue the past 12 months.
The oft-repeated word highlights what Citi considers one of its largest advantages over its peers: The streamlined company has become the day-to-day banker for the world’s largest corporations across the globe, handling an array of recurring money and payment needs.
“Our global network is what’s driving our momentum,” Jamie Forese, the CEO of Institutional Client Group, said during the presentation. “[The network] cannot be easily replicated by any of our peers in today’s market.”
In practice, this means that for many of the largest companies on earth — 84% of ICG revenues come from large multinationals — Citi is a one-stop shop nearly across the globe for daily financial services like sending and receiving money, trading financial products, using commercial credit cards, corporate lending, and exchanging currency. The bank has trading floors in 77 markets.
The businesses tied to its network are especially valuable to Citi given its utility day-in and day-out.
Investment banking is a valuable business — it drove $ 4.9 billion in revenue for Citi the past 12 months — but Citi’s large corporate clients aren’t acquiring companies or issuing debt every single day, so the revenue opportunities are more periodic. Whereas these companies do need to send and receive payments consistently, and many of Citi’s financial services clients need to be trading every day.
“Many of competitors are capable only of competing for that episodic revenue,” Forese said. “We can compete for episodic as well as the more valuable recurring opportunities.”
Here’s a breakdown of every line of business in Citi’s Institutional Clients Group, which illustrates that the services most tied to its global network account for the most revenue and have grown the quickest in recent years.
Citigroup
A key factor driving the success of the network and the Institutional Client Group overall mirrors Citi’s company-wide focus post-crisis: trimming the fat and eliminating extraneous businesses that are more trouble than they’re worth.
For ICG, this involved culling its client base from 32,000 to 14,000 from 2012 to 2016, zeroing in on customers with deep relationships that drive revenue, including a heavy focus on emerging markets.
“The decision to cull the client base was a function of eliminating clients where we didn’t think the network could provide anything distinctive,” Forese said. “Our top 1,000 clients generate about two-thirds of our revenue.”
Forese said Tuesday he anticipates the ICG client base will shrink further yet.
Here’s a slide showing the focus and evolution of Forese’s group:

On Tuesday, Uber’s board members took the stage to champion the message of how the beleaguered company was going to fix the problems with its sexist culture.
But one particular comment made it clear that even the board has some work to do when it comes to its own sexist points of view.
During the all-hands meeting, Arianna Huffington excitedly announced that Wan Ling Mortello was joining the board. Uber employees, in turn, appropriately applauded the news that women would go from 14% of Uber’s board makeup to 25%.
That’s when things became awkward, according to a recording of the meeting obtained by Yahoo Finance.
“There’s a lot of data that shows when there’s one woman on the board it’s much more likely that there will be a second woman on the board,” Huffington said.
“Actually, what it shows is that it’s much more likely to be more talking,” said David Bonderman, a director at TPG Capital and another board member.
Huffington laughed awkwardly — the rest of the room remained silent — before saying “Ohh come on David.”
The next thirty minutes of the Uber all-hands meeting continued to address a 13-page report filled with 47 recommendations on how Uber could fix its own internal culture problems.
Bonderman later apologized for the “disrespectful remark” in a statement provided to Business Insider.
“I want to apologize to my fellow board member for a disrespectful comment that was directed at her during today’s discussion. It was inappropriate. I also want to apologize to all Uber employees who were offended by the remark. I deeply regret it.”
You can listen to the full audio here — Bonderman’s bad joke begins at 6:40.

David Einhorn, the billionaire founder of hedge fund Greenlight Capital, presented his short thesis for oil and gas services company Core Laboratories on Monday.
You can check out the full presentation, which was delivered at the Sohn Conference in New York City, below.
In sum, Einhorn argued that analysts have been getting the company’s story wrong ever since it survived an industry rout in 2008. They “falsely think it’s a secular growth story… generally immune to oil price volatility,” he said.
In contrast, Einhorn argued Core Labs is riding an international oil and gas capex cycle. Due to record low oil prices, that cycle is hitting a downturn and, as a result, Core Labs will disappoint in the coming year.
The stock fell as Einhorn spoke after an initial surge. The Sohn Conference Twitter feed mistakenly said that he was presenting a long thesis, and the market moved in that direction at first.
Until it didn’t.
