Every AFL coach will soon go down a slide into a pool of ice as they join the fight against Motor Neuron Disease before today’s Collingwood v Melbourne match.

Meanwhile Collingwood is confident high flyer Jeremy Howe will play against his former club Melbourne.

Howe was on Saturday named in the team after spending only a week on the sidelines with bone bruising in a knee.

Having survived training on Thursday, he will be pitted against one of Melbourne’s white-hot forwards, Tom McDonald or Jesse Hogan.

In last year’s Queen’s Birthday match, Howe’s soaring speccy over McDonald looked like Mark of the Year, but Bomber Joe Daniher’s grab was chosen by a fan poll ­instead.

Captain Scott Pendlebury said last week Collingwood had to name its side so early, it could be subject to change.

But the Pies held out only one of their emergencies, ­medium-sized defender Flynn Appleby, from Saturday’s VFL game, which suggests Howe will take his spot in the side.

One of the smallest members of Apple’s product lineup may get a useful update this year. According to a Bloomberg report, Apple is working on new models of its AirPod wireless earbuds. One could debut later this year with an updated wireless chip and another with a water-resistant design may come out in 2019.

AirPods arrived in 2016 alongside the iPhone 7 as a solution to the smartphone’s lack of headphone jack. The W1 chip inside the AirPods helps it connect almost immediately to a user’s Apple products. According to the report, Apple is developing a new model with a new wireless chip that helps it better manage Bluetooth connections. It’s unclear if this new chip will be a variation of the W2 chip, which debuted with the Apple Watch Series 3 last year, or an entirely new one.

This year’s new model may also give users voice activation for Apple’s virtual assistant Siri. Currently, users must tap the side of an AirPod and then say “Hey Siri” to use voice commands. In the new AirPod models, summoning Siri would be hands-free, requiring only a voice command and no physical prompt.

Director Robert Rodriguez has been teasing a virtual reality video project for a while, and now it’s clear just what it entails. He’s partnering with STX on The Limit, a short-form VR action series starring long-time collaborator Michelle Rodriguez as a “genetically enhanced weapon of mass destruction” bent on destroying her creators. It’s not a profound exploration of the human condition, then, but there’s no question of the talent both in front of and behind the camera.

The Limit will premiere sometime in mid-2018 on STX’s upcoming VR ‘channel’ Surreal as an app for headsets.

The series keeps up a recent trend of big Hollywood names entering the VR space with relatively small but significant projects. Robert Rodriguez is more of an enthusiast than some early entrants (he created Double R Productions with VR in mind), but the theme remains the same: he’s experimenting with VR video production while the format is still young, but has grown just enough to start reaching the mainstream.

Netflix is determined to cement its place in the talk show landscape. The streaming service has unveiled plans for a weekly late-night show hosted by Michelle Wolf, a contributor to the Daily Show and a veteran comedienne. While the half-hour program doesn’t even have a title yet, it won’t be limited to politics and will include the risqué humor “we couldn’t do on TV,” according to Wolf. The series will debut sometime later in 2018.

This definitely isn’t Netflix’s first fling with talk shows — it launched Chelsea Handler’s series in May 2016, and it’s hard to escape the marketing blitz for David Letterman’s show. However, it illustrates Netflix’s desire to compete directly with the conventional talk show circuit by recruiting its stars. It also highlights a potential weak point for TV networks like Comedy Central. While it’s nothing new for comedy contributors to jump at chances to host their own shows (see John Oliver and Samantha Bee, among others), internet services like Netflix make that easier — they don’t have to compete for time slots or clean up their language.

Samsung’s Chromebooks haven’t always been smashing successes, but it’s clearly willing to shake up its formula when necessary. In a follow-up to hints from November, Chrome Unboxed has discovered code references confirming the existence of “Nautlius,” a Samsung-made detachable Chrome OS tablet. And from initial appearances, it might not just be a Google-powered Galaxy Book. While Nautlius appears to use a 7th-generation Intel Core chip like its Windows counterpart, the code points to the presence of the Sony IMX258 camera used in the LG G6. Given that many Chromebooks have a 720p cam at best, this might be the first Chrome OS device with a camera you’d genuinely enjoy using.

There aren’t many other clues, although the detachable design suggests this will likely be relatively compact with a 12-inch or smaller screen. To us, the bigger questions are the launch details. You might see Samsung unveil Nautlius at CES later in January, but we wouldn’t call it a guarantee. And then there’s the matter of price. The use of Intel chips suggests this won’t be an entry level device, but it’s not known whether Nautilus will compete with high-end Chrome OS machines like the Pixelbook or aim for a significantly lower price. Whatever the price, it might be the only game in town if you want a Surface-style tablet that packs both Google software and reasonably powerful hardware.
