Amazon Prime’s Invincible isn’t like other animated superhero shows.

Sure, there’s an underdog hero — this one is named Mark aka Invincible (voiced  by The Walking Dead‘s Steven Yeun) — but he’s unique. Half Korean American and half superhero, Mark is a teenager who inherits his powers from his dad Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons), the most dominant caped crusader or Viltrumite in their world. But the more strength and ability Mark gains, the more he begins to see that his father is more flawed than he could have ever imagined.

Zazie Beetz, who is best known for her roles in FX’s Atlanta and the Joker film, voices Amber, Mark’s high school classmate. Mark quietly crushes on Amber until grabbing her attention by attempting to defend her against a handsy bully. Amber eventually develops feelings for Mark, and unintentionally lands herself in a love triangle with him and Eve aka Atom Eve (Weird City‘s Gillian Jacobs).

Amber and friends, InvincibleBeetz says she was drawn to Invincible, which The Walking Dead’s Robert Kirkman adapted from his comic book series of the same name, and made its Amazon premiere this past Friday, because of the show’s impressive and inclusive cast.

“I had an opportunity to read the pilot and then to also look into the comic and the group of people that were already attached,” Beetz tells TVLine. “Steven Yeun and J.K., Sandra Oh (who plays Mark’s mom Debbie) and Gilly…. It was just a really great team that I wanted to work with and be a part of. Also, I loved that Robert Kirkman was involved with the series and I really trusted that the spirit of the comic was going to be in the television show, which I think is really important. I like being part of that world.”

Read on as the German-born Beetz teases the eight-episode Season 1 and talks about the show’s indirect connection to Atlanta costar and creator Donald Glover.

TVLINE | Did working with Kirkman attract you to Invincible?                     
He was super involved. He was in all of the recording sessions and was very involved in shaping the show. I was really drawn to that, and Amber’s character is a part of that larger world.

Invincible and Atom EveTVLINE | Amber has got some fighting skills. She’s not Domino and she doesn’t have superpowers, but she doesn’t suffer bullies.
Yeah, she holds her own and I think that is something that sort of shifted from her comic book persona, as well. She leads with confidence and leads with a sense of knowing who she is and who she wants to be and what she wants to do in the world. I think that’s actually a really interesting juxtaposition in a way to Mark, who is trying to figure it all out still. I liked the idea that a lot of people who watch a superhero thing are like, “Oh man, I wish I was like Superman or Wonder Woman” or whoever. But really, you don’t have to be that to be exceptional, or to be inciting change in the world and doing what you think is good. So, her role in that way is really important.

TVLINE | What was it like working on this during a pandemic? Were you all  doing this from home, virtually?                                                                                 
We did this before the pandemic, during, like, the spring of 2019, so it was a normal recording where you went into the studio — but we didn’t record at the same time. I think Steven got to work with J.K. Simmons, but I did it alone, and I think Gillian was alone for all of hers. Obviously, Kirkman was involved when we were recording, and our director, and some of the producers. But I didn’t work with the other actors directly.

Atlanta FX Season 2 Finale Earn VanTVLINE | Oh, I imagined you and Gillian swapping Donald Glover stories because you have both worked with him. Is it like “Six Degrees of Donald Glover?”
Yeah, I was thinking about that. I was like, “Oh yeah, like she knows him because of her time on Community.” We were just doing a bunch of our interviews together, which is really how we are getting to know each other.

TVLINE | Have you started working on Atlanta Season 3 yet?
We’re actually just about to start shooting. So, we’re doing it. I’m leaving in like two weeks to go shoot in Europe, so we have to start the whole process of that with the PPE and everything. And you can never really get used it. I have worked during the pandemic, and I have to say I’m really grateful to be working, frankly. In this business, it’s interesting because it’s all about connecting with and communicating with people, and that whole element is harder to do. Sets are very strict about keeping everybody safe, which is good, but it doesn’t make the ability to really communicate effectively easy. You have to kind of get used to doing everything a bit differently, yet you never really get used to it, because it’s a little anxiety inducing.

Mark and Amber kind of have a romantic thing. But as Mark is coming into his own and sort of working on their relationship, he struggles with the pressure of trying to balance these responsibilities of being a super person, and just trying to live a normal life. So, yeah, I don’t know what I can really tell you beyond that. But get ready for more tension between him and Amber and Eve.

When Elon Musk revealed his plans for SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy rocket, he also promised the delivery of his own cherry-red Tesla Roadster to space, all while David Bowie’s Space Oddity plays. Not the most subtle of promotions, for sure. Now Musk is teasing us with an even more overblown set of seven photos that show said Roadster prepping to head into orbit near Mars.

The photoset on Musk’s Instagram account reminds everyone that test flights usually contain mass in the form of concrete or steel blocks to test load capacity. Instead, Musk decided to launch his own Roadster into an elliptical orbit around the sun, which he says should last a billion years. Which, obviously, may be a bit of hyperbole. Even still, this is some unforgettable imagery, which will likely burn itself into our collective minds as we think of Tesla, Musk or Space X. Which is probably the point.

If you’re a fan of Alexa, then this announcement might be good news for you. Amazon announced that they are adding a Display Cards feature to the voice assistant that will allow Alexa to respond visually to certain queries.

Alexa will be able to produce visual responses to questions about the weather, to do and shopping lists, your calendar and show you Now Playing information for music. It’s currently only available to developers, who can use the AVS Developer Console to enable Display Cards, but it gives us a better idea of what apps will look like across screens in Alexa’s new GUI.

This announcement goes hand in hand with the announcement of the Amazon Echo Show, an Echo device with a 7-inch touchscreen that’s been criticized for its boxy appearance. It also comes packed with eight microphones, a front-facing camera and a Dolby speaker. You can pre-order the Echo Show now for $ 230 in the US; it’s scheduled to ship starting June 28.

The afternoon after Trump won the presidential election, Colin Waugh, a 31-year-old resident of Independence, Missouri, logged into Facebook. He then created a group called the Liberal Prepper and invited 38 of his friends.

The goal of the Facebook group, Waugh wrote, is to “combine minds and hearts, with an emphasis on preparedness, in a time where a progressive way of life has never been more at risk of becoming taboo or altogether ostracized.”

Three weeks later, The Liberal Prepper climbed to 1,000 members. As of now, it has amassed nearly 2,000.

The group is for liberals who, following Trump’s election, started prepping for a natural disaster, terrorist attack, or other unforeseen catastrophe.

“There was less of a threat of a nuclear holocaust brought out by Obama,” Waugh tells Business Insider. “There’s a leap into fear now that Trump is in power.”

In October 2016, Waugh and his wife started stockpiling protein bars, rice, peanut butter, first-aid supplies, batteries, toilet paper, cat food, trash bags, medical handbooks, and as many canned goods as they could fit in the pantry of their one-bedroom apartment.

The Liberal Prepper page is active, with members posting and commenting multiple times per day. There are photos of vegetables stored in mason jars; tutorials for homemade gardens, canoes, and bunkers; information about medical kits; a few liberal memes; numerous news articles; and links to off-grid gadgets like pedal-powered laundry machines.

A member named Seth posted that he has canned over a gallon of carrots and has bought ten 3.5-gallon water storage containers, while another woman posted that she will use $ 500 worth of her tax return to buy gear.

One man, named Mannie, posted a photo of his new kerosene heater, and asked others what they thought of the brand. A few members liked a recent photo of a liberal prepper’s sink, full of mangoes she plans to store.

Stacy, an Idaho-based woman who serves as a co-administrator of The Liberal Prepper group, became interested in prepping in the months leading up to Election Day. As a single mom of a kindergartner, she says she now worries about her son’s education (especially with Betsy DeVos as education secretary) and the possibility of him learning hate rhetoric from some of Trump’s followers.

“I don’t know if there are going to be changes to the curriculum, school funding, like if they’re not going to be able to hire quality people to teach our kids or if they would teach them propaganda,” Stacy, who who declined to give her last name, tells BI.

She has bought just a handful of supplies so far: seeds, canned goods, rice, pre-made to-go bags, a tent, and extra water.

“After I was added to the [Liberal Prepper] group, I saw it started blowing up,” Stacey says, “It’s amazing to see how it has blossomed. It makes me feel like I’ve got people to turn to, if anything should happen.”

The group’s members are not the only ones who began prepping in response to Trump’s win. At least a few American prepping supply companies have seen spikes in sales since the election. The Idaho-based company My Patriot Supply tells BI that its sales during the week of the inauguration doubled from the same week in 2016. And Doomsday Prep, which has a storefront in Georgia, has experienced more than 15% year-over-year growth since Election Day, according to owner David Sanders.

Waugh says he does not consider himself (and the liberal prepping community at large) a part of the American Preppers Network (APN), the largest organization of its kind in the US. This is because he says the majority of APN’s members lean conservative (though the APN site states that it accepts people from all political affiliations).

Unlike conservative preppers, liberals tend to focus more on skills and supplies that will provide comfort (e.g. in the form of stoves and blankets) rather than protection (e.g. firearms), Waugh says. However, a handful of Liberal Prepper members have bought guns and ammunition since the election.

Though Waugh and his wife never considered buying a gun before the 2016 campaign cycle, they purchased a 12-gauge shotgun and a 9mm handgun by the end of the year.

“With liberal preppers, we’re thinking about things that transcend man-made cataclysm, every sort of disaster: tornado, natural volcano, earthquake, the power grid failing, or having dry storage goods on hand to prevent our family from starving,” Waugh says.

He is preparing for all the above, but his worst fears are a terrorist attack on American soil or a civil war incited by the white nationalist movement. He believes that the Trump administration’s plans — from repealing the Affordable Care Act to increasing America’s nuclear capability — have increased the likelihood of either or both of those things happening.

“If you were to ask us what cataclysm is most likely now, we’d say some Trump-related accident that causes the dishevelment of society,” he says.

This spring, Waugh plans to launch a Liberal Prepper website, which will feature a forum, marketplace, and news feed. So far, he has crowdfunded $ 1,530 (mostly from the Facebook group members) for it.

“My goal is to either prevent tyranny in America or be prepared for it if we can,” he says.
