General William Westmoreland, who commanded American military operations in the Vietnam War from 1964 to 1968 had authorized a nuclear weapons transfer to the Southeast Asian nation, before national security advisor, Walt W. Rostow, notified the White House, prompting President Lyndon Johnson to immediately cancel the secret deployment of weapons, which could have sparked World War III, the New York Times reports, citing declassified documents.

Finding themselves in a stalemate against the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) in the middle of the months-long Battle of Khe Sanh, Gen. Westmoreland devised a contingency scheme to use nuclear weapons should US forces be overrun by their enemy. The secret plan codenamed Fracture Jaw required the US nukes to get transferred from Okinawa, Japan to South Vietnam by the US Pacific command, under the leadership of Admiral Ulysses Simpson Grant Sharp Jr. The secretly planned operation was to be set in motion under a memo sent by Westmoreland to Sharp on February 10, 1968.

Once President Johnson was alerted about the plan by his national security advisor Rostow through an “eyes only” memorandum to the president, he immediately put a halt to the operation.

“When [President Johnson] learned that the planning had been set in motion, he was extraordinarily upset and forcefully sent word through Rostow and, I think, directly to Westmoreland, to shut it down,” Tom Johnson, a special assistant to the president at the time, told the NYT. According to special assistant Johnson, despite pressing the US generals to win the Battle of Khe Sanh, the 36th President feared a “wider war” could break out with China should the conflict escalate further.

Once word of the scheme reached the White House, Admiral Sharp was immediately ordered to “discontinue all planning for Fracture Jaw,” declassified documents dated February 12, 1968 show. Sharp also ordered staff to “place all planning material, including messages and correspondence relating thereto, under positive security,” noting that information about the secret operation “must be airtight.”

“Johnson never fully trusted his generals,” said the former assistant. “He had great admiration for General Westmoreland, but he didn’t want his generals to run the war.”

The Battle of Khe Sanh, fought in northwestern Quảng Trị Province, was one of the epic clashes fought between the Americans and the North Vietnamese communist soldiers during the Vietnam War. At the start of the engagement on January 21 some 6,000 US Marines and South Vietnamese Army soldiers engaged around 20,000 men from the North Vietnamese Army (NVA). Up to 45,000 US soldiers and up to 100,000 North Vietnamese fighters would take part in the 77-day battle, in which both sides claimed victory.

  • Companies have started stockpiling goods to safeguard against the possibility a disruptive no deal Brexit.
  • Samuel Tombs, the chief UK economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, says clients have asked him if the stockpiling of goods could actually give a short-term boost to the economy.
  • Tombs is unconvinced and outlines four reasons why company stockpiles are unlikely to help UK growth.

LONDON — With the odd exception, the vast majority of economists covering Britain are agreed on one thing — that a disorderly, “no deal” Brexit will be bad news for the British economy.

However, one of the UK’s top economic research houses said clients are asking about a counterintuitive argument that a no deal outcome could actually be good for the economy.

Princess Eugenie shares previously unseen family photo as wedding preparations continue https://briefnews.eu/princess-eugenie-shares-previously-unseen-family-photo-as-wedding-preparations-continue/ https://briefnews.eu/princess-eugenie-shares-previously-unseen-family-photo-as-wedding-preparations-continue/#respond Sun, 03 Jun 2018 10:44:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/princess-eugenie-shares-previously-unseen-family-photo-as-wedding-preparations-continue/

Princess Eugenie, 28, captioned the post of herself, Princess Beatrice, 29, Prince Andrew, 58, and Sarah Ferguson, 58, “90s flashback”.

The sweet snap shows the family on board the HMS Cottesmore.

Eugenie and her sister sit on their parents laps, and all four smile broadly for the cameras.

The photo was taken at some point between April 1993 and November 1994, when Andrew was commander of the Royal Navy vessel.

Sarah Ferguson, then the Duchess of York, is seen wearing a black dress with silver disk pattern, and wears her hair in a relaxed half-up, half-down style.

Beatrice and Eugenie are wearing matching white dresses with an HMS Cottesmore waistband.

The picture has received over 21,000 likes and hundreds of comments.

Many royal fans praised Sarah Ferguson, and expressed a wish for her and Andrew to reunite.

One wrote: “Aaaww Beautiful family !! I hope your parents remarry !!”

Another said: “It was great to see your mom at Harry and Meghan’s wedding, she looked wonderful!”

Eugenie is preparing for her October wedding to Jack Brooksbank, 31, after the couple announced their engagement in February.

Their wedding will be held at St George’s Chapel in Windsor – just like Eugenie’s cousin, Prince Harry, 33, who wed Meghan Markle, 36, last month.

Jack and Eugenie attended the wedding, and were sure to be imagining their own special day in a matter of months.

It is expected the entire Royal Family will attend Eugenie’s nuptials, although hers will not be a state wedding, nor will it be televised as Harry and Meghan’s was.

Will Jack get a title after he marries in to the Royal Family like Meghan Markle did?

When Meghan married Harry she became the Duchess of Sussex, as Harry had been named Duke.

However, it is unlikely Jack will follow suit, according to royal expert, blogger and historian Marlene Eilers Koenig.

She told Hello! Magazine: “Jack will not be getting any title from the Queen.”

However, this is not a snub so much as it is a rule set by previous marriages of royal women.

Marlene added: “The precedent was set by Princess Alexandra and the Hon. Mr. Angus Ogilvy in 1963. He turned down an earldom.”

  • Amber Rudd is reportedly under pressure to publish the Brexit immigration bill sooner than planned.
  • The bill — which will propose what Britain’s post-Brexit immigration policy should look like — isn’t expected until the end of the year.
  • However, the Home Secretary’s Cabinet colleagues believe the bill is key to ensuring Britain is prepared for a no-deal Brexit.

LONDON — Home Secretary Amber Rudd could bring forward a key Brexit immigration bill which deals with the rights of EU nationals as a Cabinet row over Britain’s preparations for a no-deal Brexit escalates.

The Home Secretary is reportedly under pressure from Cabinet colleagues to bring forward a bill — not currently due in parliament until the end of the year — which details plans to register the 3 million EU nationals currently living in the UK and sets out the UK’s post-Brexit immigration policy.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson is to visit Russia later this year, and preparations for his political trip are underway on both sides, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Vladimir Titov has confirmed. Moscow and London are expected to touch upon pressing issues that plague two countries’ relationships. “In the first place, we intend to focus on normalizing Russia-UK relations through dialogue which should not be complicated by artificial linkages or reservations,” the official noted. The Foreign Office has said in a statement on Friday the UK had “deep differences” with Russia but it is vital “to continue dialogue on matters of UK national interest.” h

N. Korea threatens Australia with ‘disaster’ for engagement in US ‘war preparations’ https://briefnews.eu/n-korea-threatens-australia-with-disaster-for-engagement-in-us-war-preparations/ https://briefnews.eu/n-korea-threatens-australia-with-disaster-for-engagement-in-us-war-preparations/#respond Sun, 15 Oct 2017 02:07:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/n-korea-threatens-australia-with-disaster-for-engagement-in-us-war-preparations/ Pyongyang has threatened Australia with “disaster” unless the island nation abandons its allegiance with the US interests. Canberra however said it will not be “cowed” by threats and will continue to do everything to “protect and help” its allies.

“Should Australia continue to follow the US in imposing military, economic and diplomatic pressure upon the DPRK [Democratic People’s Republic of Korea] despite our repeated warnings, they will not be able to avoid a disaster,” KCNA warned on Saturday quoting a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry.

Stressing that North Korea regards Australia’s “frantic engagement” with Washington a “hostile” act against the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), the Ministry accused Canberra of “zealously joining frenzied political and military provocations of the US.”

The statement specifically condemned Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop’s support for US policies, which she apparently exhibited during a visit to the Panmunjom village on October 11 with Defence Minister Marise Payne.

The village lies just north of the de facto border between North and South Korea in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). Addressing the press there, the ministers urged Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear weapons tests and missile program, while calling on the diplomatic community to step up pressure on North Korea.

Pyongyang believes that Australia is also ready to help the US and its allies militarily. Recalling the placement of some 1,250 US Marines to Darwin, in the far north of Australia, in April for a six-month deployment, North Korea claimed that Australian forces practiced for “amphibious landings” in North Korea.

In addition, Australia is about to start a process of equipping its naval fleet with missile defense systems to counter North Korean rockets. Under the current government shipbuilding strategy, Canberra is investing AU$ 89 billion (US$ 70 billion) to produce 12 new submarines, 12 offshore patrol vessels and nine new frigates, which will be equipped with the Lockheed Martin Aegis combat management system.

North Korea said it was under the impression that Australia is “preparing for a war on the Korean Peninsula,” and advised it to stay away from “reckless remarks and conducts” in support of the US so-called “military option.”

Pyongyang believes that Australia is “allowing themselves to be exploited by Trump’s selfish ‘America First Policy’ at the cost of their own national interests.”

Responding to Pyongyang’s threats, the minister for defense personnel, Dan Tehan, told Sky News on Sunday that Australia “will not be cowed by the North Koreans, we will continue to do all we can to protect and help and support our allies.”

The USS ‘Michigan’, a nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, arrived in the South Korean port of Busan earlier this week. Next week, the Ohio-class submarine will be joined by Burke-class guided missile destroyers, USS ‘Stethem’ and USS ‘Mustin Arleigh’.

Together with Nimitz-class nuclear-powered supercarrier USS ‘Ronald Reagan’, the US flotilla is expected lead the join the naval drill with its regional allies, scheduled for October 16-26 in the Sea of Japan (known as the East Sea in the Koreas) and the Yellow Sea.

The drills off the Korean Peninsula will begin amid heightened tensions around Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile test launches. North Korea conducted its sixth nuclear test on September 3, forcing the UN Security Council to introduce new sanctions. The UN actions, however, did not stop Pyongyang from launching a series of ballistic missiles later in September, while vowing to destroy the US and their allies with nuclear weapons if attacked.

With Pyongyang and Washington whipping up tensions, Moscow and Beijing have repeatedly called on both parties to remain calm. Russia and China have called for the implementation of the so-called “double freeze” initiative that envisages North Korea suspending its nuclear and missile program in exchange for the US and South Korea abandoning their military exercises in the region. The initiative has been rejected by Washington.

The 101st running of the Indianapolis 500 is just one of the big races taking place this Memorial Day weekend. And ahead of the big event—which has seen plenty of interest this year as F1 star Fernando Alonso is joining the fun—we spoke with racer Graham Rahal about his approach to the race.

Rahal is the son of Bobby Rahal, a very successful racer in his own right (with three IndyCar championships and an Indy 500 win to his name). In fact, Graham even races for his father’s team.

Driving an IndyCar, particularly for 500 miles at Indianapolis, is quite a challenge. Unlike many other racing series, the cars are extremely physical, lacking power steering. And they don’t have quite the same level of driver aids and electronic support systems that other series like Formula 1 or the World Endurance Championship allow.
