The approaching tropical storm, which forecasters say could become a hurricane on Monday, has already forced the space agency to ditch a potential launch opportunity for its next-generation SLS rocket on Tuesday, September 27. It’s now trying to establish whether the enormous rocket needs to be rolled off the launchpad and back into the Vehicle Assembly Building four miles away to protect it from the incoming wind and rain.
On top of that, Storm Ian has also interrupted preparations for SpaceX’s Crew-5 mission to the space station. The troubling weather forecast has prompted the mission team to postpone plans to bring the crew to the Kennedy Space Center on Monday, September 26.
With NASA yet to decide a new date for their arrival, its current target launch date of Monday, October 3, could slip.
“NASA and SpaceX’s Crew-5 astronaut arrival to the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida has been delayed as mission teams monitor Tropical Storm Ian,” NASA said in a tweet, adding that a new arrival date will be announced in the coming days.
Update: @NASA’s @SpaceX Crew-5 astronaut arrival to the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida has been delayed as mission teams monitor Tropical Storm Ian. A new crew arrival date will be set in the coming days.

As part of Crew-5, NASA astronauts Nicole Mann and Josh Cassada, together with Koichi Wakata of JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency), and Anna Kikina of Russia’s Roscosmos space agency, will spend about six months aboard the orbital outpost, working on science and technology demonstrations as well as performing maintenance and upgrade activities.
For Mann, Cassada, and Kikina, this will be their first ride to space. Wakata, meanwhile, has already been on four orbital missions. The first took place in 1996, while the most recent voyage was in 2013. The Japanese astronaut has three Space Shuttle rides under his belt and one Soyuz trip, and so, like his three crewmates, will be traveling aboard SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule for the very first time.
The Crew-5 mission will be SpaceX’s eighth crewed flight since the first one in the summer of 2020. The Crew-5 mission is the seventh to the space station. The other crewed flight involved the first-ever all-civilian mission that orbited Earth for several days without docking at the ISS.

It’s notoriously difficult for streaming music services to get a foothold in Japan — this is a country where CDs still reign (72 percent of music revenue was for physical media in 2017). All the same, Sony and Rhapsody are giving it a shot. They’re launching Japan’s first audiophile-grade streaming music service, Mora Qualitas, in early 2019. Pay ¥1,980 (about $ 17.50) per month and you can listen to lossless FLAC files at up to 24-bit/96kHz quality as long as you have the audio hardware to do it justice.
The service runs Rhapsody’s Napster technology under the hood and will initially run on Macs and Windows PCs, although there are promises of support for “many other platforms” in the future.
Mora Qualitas could fare better than Spotify and other rival both through the support of a domestic giant like Sony as well as its aim at an underserved audience. It still faces a slew of challenges, though. Music licensing is much trickier in Japan, and it might not go far if Sony and Rhapsody can’t promise a deep catalog. More importantly, the Japanese music scene has historically thrived on physical collectibles, including discs. Unless Sony and Rhapsody can convince J-pop fans that it’s easier to stream a hot new single than to rush to the store, they might not fare any better than their predecessors.

The Russian military has obtained “irrefutable” data that terrorist groups, including Jabhat an-Nusra, and the infamous White Helmets met in Idlib province on Sunday, according to the ministry’s spokesperson Igor Konashenkov.
The militants plotted the final scenarios for the chemical attacks that the Syrian army are expected to make in the cities of Jisr ash-Shugur, Serakab, Taftanaz and Sarmin, the Russian military revealed.
“Full readiness of all participants involved in the staging of the provocations is be ensured by the evening of September 8,” Konashenkov stated. He added that the terrorists are to receive a “special” signal from some “foreign friends of Syrian revolution” to launch the operation.
The statement comes after earlier warnings from Moscow’s that militants are preparing to stage a chemical attack in the Syrian province to give the Western coalition a pretext to strike Syria.
In August, the Defense Ministry said that eight canisters of chlorine had been delivered to a village near Jisr al-Shughur city, and that a foreign-trained group of militants had also arrived in the area to simulate a rescue operation after the staged attack.
The US and its allies have repeatedly stressed its readiness to strike Syria if any attack takes place, ignoring all Russia’s warnings. Washington’s envoy to the UN Nikki Haley recently said that she already knows the perpetrators in case a chemical incident takes place in Syria.

]]>On Saturday, American Horror Story co-creator Ryan Murphy shared the first photo of the Murder House marrieds back on set of the FX anthology. The Instagram post was captioned, “Connie and Dylan. The Harmons in their forever AHS home… Murder House.”
Murphy’s caption would seem to confirm that Britton and McDermott are in fact reprising their roles as Vivien and Ben Harmon, who moved into the haunted home that gave Season 1 its name. As previously reported, Cody Fern (The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story) has been cast as a grown-up version of evil Murder House baby Michael Langdon.
Set about 18 months into the future, AHS Season 8 “begins with the end of the world — and then our world begins,” EP Alexis Martin Woodall said at the summer TCA press tour, where other character/story details were teased.
Apocalypse will serve as a crossover of sorts, merging the worlds of Murder House and Coven. Murphy’s last set photo posted on Aug. 19 featured Coven returnees Sarah Paulson, Lily Rabe, Emma Roberts, Frances Conroy, Gabourey Sidibe, Taissa Farmiga and Stevie Nicks. Fellow AHS alumni Kathy Bates, Billie Lourd, Leslie Grossman, Adina Porter, Evan Peters, Billy Eichner, Cheyenne Jackson and Jessica Lange are also coming back.
American Horror Story: Apocalypse kicks off on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 10/9c on FX. The franchise, which is currently entering Season 8, has already been renewed through Season 10.

GOLD COAST, Australia — For two swimmers with six Olympic medals between them, career firsts should be hard to come by. But when those swimmers are just 17 years old, there’s still plenty to experience and plenty to learn.
Thursday marked one of those rare new experiences for Canadians Penny Oleksiak and Taylor Ruck as they swam in their first-ever Commonwealth Games races.
And they have the medals to prove it.
Ruck, born in Kelowna, B.C., posted a Games-record time of one minute, 54.81 seconds on the way to a gold medal in the women’s 200-metre freestyle.
If that wasn’t enough of a unique experience, the new Commonwealth champion was also awarded her medal by Prince Charles.
In the final event of the evening, Ruck swam the anchor leg behind Torontonians Oleksiak and Kayla Sanchez and Montreal’s Alexia Zevnik to win silver in the 4×100 freestyle relay.
Para swimmer Sarah Mehain, of Vernon, B.C., rounded out the Canadian medal haul in the pool on Day 1 with a silver in the women’s S7 50m butterfly.
Both Ruck and Oleksiak are trying for medals every time they jump in the pool, but that’s not all they’re looking to gain in Australia. These Games are a measuring stick for the young swimmers, who are expected to lead the Canadian charge in the pool at the next Olympics, in Tokyo in 2020.
“[The Commonwealth Games are] just kind of a viewpoint of where I am right now going into the next Olympics,” Oleksiak said. “I’m not expecting to be at my next Olympic level right now, [I’ll] just see where I am, see what I can fix, and then build from there.”
One of those things she aims to improve is her recovery after races, and she acknowledges she still has work to do in other areas as well.
“I have a lot of things I can fix right now,” said Oleksiak, who finished seventh in the 200 race in which Ruck struck gold. “It’s kind of up from here.”
There are still lessons to be learned about how to cope at a major multi-sport competition, and Ruck agrees that the Gold Coast offers a refresher course of sorts.
“Having already been to Rio, there are many similarities between the two Games,” Ruck said. “Being able to transfer the skills and lessons that I learn here to Tokyo would be really helpful to my performances there.”
Oleksiak said the environment, while at times overwhelming, offers another opportunity to grow as a competitor.
“It’s pretty crazy because it’s literally athletes everywhere, but it kind of teaches me to be more professional in front of other people, and not always joking around all the time,” Oleksiak said before adding: “But I still like to have fun.”
Part of that fun is facing off against the Australians at these Games, who provide an extra bit of motivation for Oleksiak.
“All the [Australians] I’m racing, whether it’s Emma [McKeon], Cate [Campbell] or Bronte [Campbell] or any of them, they’re all amazingly fast girls,” Oleksiak said. “It’s a little bit intimidating because I know I’m never going to get a rest from them, but it’s fun because they’re always going to keep pushing me.”
The Australian 4×100 relay team, which won gold in a world-record time of 3:30.05, was seemingly energized by the feverish support of a home crowd.
An ocean of green and gold surrounded the outdoor venue as the host country’s fans — clad in team colours — were as loud as the crashing surf on the Gold Coast, cheering on an Australian squad that features sisters Cate and Bronte Campbell, Emma McKeon and Shayna Jack.
“Swimming in front of the Australians is amazing, an experience unlike I’ve ever had,” Ruck said. “When I was in the ready room I heard them cheering for the other Australian swimmers and I was like, oh my gosh, they were so loud and I’ve never heard that before. It was crazy.”
Ruck’s family is with her in Australia, helping the teenage phenom keep a semblance of normalcy. It also allows her at least one of the comforts of home — the traditional breakfast fixed by her dad on competition day.
“I don’t think my parents have ever been to such a large-scale meet, and having them here is just amazing. I got to see them yesterday and that was really cool,” she said. “My dad sometimes makes this thing called bennies, which is just like eggs benedict, but it’s special [to me].”
Family is on Oleksiak’s mind too as she swims with a heavy heart after finding out the day before competition that her grandmother had passed away.
Given the news one of my grandmothers died today breaks my heart. I feel extremely grateful knowing that she was able to live a long life having the ability to see her children and grandchildren succeed in various aspects of their lives. #whoidothisfor

There are five days of competition in the pool left to go, and both Oleksiak and Ruck will be podium favourites in more events, both individually and in relays.
Ruck said team competition is important to her.
“Just being able to be on the relay with my closest friends [makes it] super special because I’ve trained with them and shared so many experiences with them.”
There should be plenty more of those experiences still to come.

Whether it’s motivated by saving money, losing weight, or being kinder to your body, meal prep is a simple way to change your life almost immediately.
While you might enjoy the fact that your local sub shop knows you by name, your bank account probably doesn’t. And no matter how rigorously you follow a fitness plan, if you come home and eat the same boxed mac and cheese every night, you won’t be seeing the results you should be — and trust me, I have tried it.
Meal prep can mean different things to different people, but ultimately, it’s preparing your food ahead of time to save yourself time in the kitchen and make it easier to enjoy healthy foods during the week.
If you get the right tools (and download the right apps), it can be simpler and faster than you think. Below, I’ve rounded up 15 of the highest-rated kitchen tools on Amazon that will make some aspect of meal prep easier to do. Once you set up a system, it’s much easier to get into a habit.
These 15 highly rated kitchen tools make meal prep easier:
Crate & Barrel
Whether you prefer your eggs hard or soft boiled, the Dash cooker makes cooking them easy. Once you’ve filled the base of the cooker with water — it comes with a measuring cup that tells you how much water you’ll need for every type of egg — you can place up to six eggs on the top tray.
The Dash also includes two additional trays: one for poached eggs, and another for making omelettes.
Egg gadgets don’t normally galvanize a cult reaction in people, but this is one beloved kitchen tool.

After years of urging the province for changes, sexual health advocates are hopeful Alberta will finally fund an expensive drug that can prevent the spread of HIV.
]]>After the hometown Hobart Hurricanes had sprinted out of the blocks with a 53-run opening stand between Alex Doolan (26 off 21 balls) and D’Arcy Short (34 off 19), Bravo was called on to stem the bleeding and ravage the Hurricanes line-up.
He dismissed Doolan to slow the Hurricanes’ scoring and, after taking 2/7 in his first spell, returned at the tail of the innings to claim three further wickets — his haul of 5/28 the best ever by a Renegades bowler in the Big Bash and making him the first player to record 400 T20 wickets.
But if the odds weren’t already stacked heavily in the favour of batsmen in T20 matches, Bravo took part in the first T10 tournament played in Sharjah in India over three days earlier this month and says it helped hone the variations that he used to torment the Hurricanes batsmen in his side’s seven-wicket win.
“It’s really to test your skills,” Bravo told Channel 10 of the six-team T10 tournament that boasted many of the game’s most dynamic batsmen and skilful bowlers.
“For me I use it as preparation to challenge myself.
“Some of the better players in the world playing in that tournament at a very small ground so basically I get my variations and my yorkers right. It gives me confidence coming into this game.
“I challenged myself with my preparation coming to the Big Bash because I wanted to do well.
“Last time I missed out because of injury. I always want to start well in any tournament and happy that I did well in a winning performance.”
And in a stern warning to the rest of the Big Bash teams, Bravo expects his performances to improve as confidence grows in the hamstring injury that ended his BBL06 tournament 12 months ago.
“Fitness is good, a bit cautious because of what happened last season, so definitely I’ll be taking my time,” Bravo said.
“I think as the tournament progresses I’ll gain more confidence moving around.
“I have a good medical team with the Renegades so I feel comfortable with my body.”
After the Hurricanes’ bright start it was Bravo and Afghan off-spinner Mohammad Nabi (1/25) who dragged the ascendancy back the way of the Renegades. Hobart’s top scorers were Short and Ben McDermott (34 off 24) as each of the top five got past 20 but got little further.
There was a brief moment of hope for the Hurricanes when Clive Rose backed up after having the first ball of the innings hit for four to claim the dangerous Aaron Finch next ball, but a 113-run stand between Cameron White (79* off 59) and Marcus Harris (50 off 34) ensured the visitors could coast to a comfortable win, reaching the target of 165 with seven wickets and nine balls to spare.
HITS
Dwayne Bravo’s ability to use subtle variation to disrupt the batsman’s timing drove the Hurricanes crazy. They were deceived by the slow ones and caught out by the quicker ones and each different delivery landed exactly where it was supposed to.
It was a game-changing spell and a rare five-for in the shortened version of the game.
Bravo wasn’t the only West Indian to impress on Thursday night. Jofra Archer was making his Big Bash debut and the right-arm quick from Barbados showed skill with both bat and ball to suggest he will be one to watch in BBL07.
As the rest of the Hurricanes bowlers went for nine an over and higher, Archer took 2/17 at an economy rate of 4.25 to be the lone highlight in an otherwise disappointing bowling performance from an attack that relied too heavily on a pace barrage.
It must be somewhat tough on the soul for Victorian players who go from the Stars to the Renegades, but Cameron White proved he can still be a dominant force in the Big Bash with a faultless match-winning innings.
Coming in after just two deliveries, White used his extensive experience to first settle the situation and then accelerate alongside Harris, refusing to throw his wicket away as he steered his side successfully to their target with minimal fuss.
MISSES
The Hurricanes had a plan to ruffle the Renegades’ feathers with a pace barrage designed to blast batsmen out.
The only problem was that both Tymal Mills and Aaron Summers struggled with control to go with their speed and they were charging in to batsmen who love nothing more than having the ball come onto the bat.
It’s the slow stuff that the hitters struggle with, coach Gary Kirsten might need to think about a reshuffle for their next game against the Thunder.
If you’re in the crowd at a Big Bash game there’s a big chance a ball might end up coming your way. If it does, you’ll more than likely end up on TV so you want to give the best account of yourself.
One poor punter at Blundstone Arena not only dropped one chance over the fence but was caught out again shortly thereafter.
He was seen soon after walking from the ground, head bowed.
