I prefer not to clutter my kitchen with extra appliances, but Cuisinart’s new $81 hybrid grill is an exception to my rule https://briefnews.eu/i-prefer-not-to-clutter-my-kitchen-with-extra-appliances-but-cuisinarts-new-81-hybrid-grill-is-an-exception-to-my-rule/ https://briefnews.eu/i-prefer-not-to-clutter-my-kitchen-with-extra-appliances-but-cuisinarts-new-81-hybrid-grill-is-an-exception-to-my-rule/#respond Sun, 07 Oct 2018 06:48:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/i-prefer-not-to-clutter-my-kitchen-with-extra-appliances-but-cuisinarts-new-81-hybrid-grill-is-an-exception-to-my-rule/ The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you’ll like. • Cuistinart’s new Griddler Five ($ 80.99) is an easy-to-use and even easier-to-clean appliance with a host of different uses, including making eggs and pancakes, grilling steak and fish, and pressing sandwiches.
  • It has two removable, reversible non-stick plates: one side has a smooth, flat surface for griddling, while the other side has a textured surface for grilling.
  • With its simple control panel, the Griddler can be operated by anyone who wants a convenient, effective way to cook a variety of foods.

The world of small kitchen appliances is full of fun and interesting products, but fun and interesting doesn’t always translate into useful, and you can end up with a cabinet full of gadgets you rarely touch. Since I live in a small apartment with a tiny kitchen, I try to keep the number of appliances I own to a minimum and focus instead on versatile, multi-use items.

Almost half of Swedes & Danes reject EU, prefer their own ‘Nordic Union’ – poll https://briefnews.eu/almost-half-of-swedes-danes-reject-eu-prefer-their-own-nordic-union-poll/ https://briefnews.eu/almost-half-of-swedes-danes-reject-eu-prefer-their-own-nordic-union-poll/#respond Fri, 27 Jul 2018 18:58:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/almost-half-of-swedes-danes-reject-eu-prefer-their-own-nordic-union-poll/ Nearly half of Swedes and Danes said they’d rather be in a ‘Nordic Union’ with their neighbors from Norway, Finland and Iceland than in the EU, a fresh poll revealed.

Research conducted by pollster Sentio for Norwegian newspaper Klassekampen showed 47 percent support the hypothetical Nordic Union in Sweden and 45 percent in Denmark.
32 percent of Swedes and 36 percent of Danes were happy to remain in the European Union, while the rest said they were undecided on the issue.

As for non-EU member Norway, only 10 percent suggested that it would be a good idea for the country to join the European Union. The concept of the so-called ‘Nordic Union,’ which would see Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland implementing joint policies, was backed by 32 percent of Norwegians.

The poll was conducted in Norway, Sweden and Denmark, with around 1,000 people surveyed in each of the countries. The researchers didn’t ask those in Finland and Iceland for their opinion.

The respondents weren’t asked in the survey to explain the reasons behind their low level of trust in the EU.

With the bloc going through a massive migrant crisis since 2015, Sweden and Denmark were forced to accommodate thousands of people fleeing unrest in North Africa and the Middle East.

In Sweden, the right-wing Sweden Democrats, who promote an anti-migrant agenda, have been recently polling at a record 20 percent and are seen as among the favorites in the September 9 election. The country has received 400,000 asylum requests since 2012, with migrants believed by many to be contributing to the rise in crime and social tension.

The authorities in Denmark have taken a tough stance on migrants, admitting that integration policies have failed in the country. They announced plans to teach “Danish values” to children in ghettos and introduced a ban on burqa female full body veils, with huge fines for repeat offenders.

Women often say they prefer taller men — but the reality is more complicated https://briefnews.eu/women-often-say-they-prefer-taller-men-but-the-reality-is-more-complicated/ https://briefnews.eu/women-often-say-they-prefer-taller-men-but-the-reality-is-more-complicated/#respond Mon, 16 Apr 2018 16:48:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/women-often-say-they-prefer-taller-men-but-the-reality-is-more-complicated/ nicole kidman keith urban height difference Christopher Polk/Getty Images for Turner

  • Men are an average of about 5 inches taller than women.
  • Scientific studies suggest that while women might say they have a preference for taller male partners, actual height differences in heterosexual couples aren’t as wide as stated height preferences.
  • Shorter men do tend to marry younger and lower-educated women, and psychologists think that might be because they’re “compensating” for their shortness.

The average American woman, standing at just over 5 feet 3 inches tall, is around five and a half inches shorter than the average American man.

It’s a height difference that holds true in most places around the world, from Brazil to China. Men tend to universally level-off around five inches taller than women as fully-grown adults.

Wine lovers STILL prefer their favourite tipple from the bottle rather than box or pouch https://briefnews.eu/wine-lovers-still-prefer-their-favourite-tipple-from-the-bottle-rather-than-box-or-pouch/ https://briefnews.eu/wine-lovers-still-prefer-their-favourite-tipple-from-the-bottle-rather-than-box-or-pouch/#respond Fri, 26 Jan 2018 18:32:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/wine-lovers-still-prefer-their-favourite-tipple-from-the-bottle-rather-than-box-or-pouch/

Whether it is cheap plonk or a fine claret, the nation’s wine buffs remain snobs about anything other than the standard 750ml sized bottle for anything other than ‘low key social events’, it revealed.

Producers have spent years trying to find alternative formats for containers for convenience, storage and environmental reasons.

Although glass is recyclable, it’s also energy-intensive to produce; switching to plastic and cardboard is much less energy intensive to produce and the cardboard (and in some cases the plastic) can also be recycled.

But in tests on groups of adults in five different cities, supplier Kingsland Wine found nearly all rejected any other format other than a bottle.

Some younger drinkers said they would buy smaller bottle sizes for certain occasions but cans got a complete thumbs down across all age groups and boxes only suitable for low key events with some.

Around 81 per cent of wine is bought by the over-45s who want sophistication not gimmicks, found the survey.

Kingsland Drinks marketing director Neil Anderson said: “Different formats can work for different and varying occasions.

“We have so many different formats hitting the shelves but how relevant are some of the are are they really addressing the needs of customers?

“Shoppers do care about environmentally friendly packaging but that benefit needs to be clearly communicated along with other benefits such as convenience.

“Paper and pouches do this but are unlikely to appear to more traditional older wine drinkers. For them, wine needs to look sophisticated and not too quirky.”

Younger consumers were more likely to try different formats but 22 per cent of all Britons plan to drink less alcohol in the next 12 months, according to the poll of 527 adults.

That could mean concentrating on smaller sized containers and lower alcohol content in wines.

Mr Anderson told The Grocer magazine: “We can’t behave like dinosaurs.

“The wine industry must react with solutions for consumers in format and lower abv (alcohol by volume) or risk them leaving the wine category.”

Despite being around for many years, boxed wine, and other non-glass containers, have been looked down upon by high-end winemakers and drinkers alike.

But experts say the wine is not affected by being stored and transported in containers other than glass.

They say the air-tight seal between the tap and the bag inside the box means the contents can be stored for weeks once opened without the taste being affected whereas wine from an open bottle should ideally be consumed within a matter of hours or a day or two.

According to the wine bible Decanter, sales of boxed wine are rocketing.

Waitrose wine box sales were up 15 per cent last year, while Amazon reported a 212 per cent year-on-year increase in sales.

Alexis Sanchez to Man Utd: Why rivals would prefer Man City switch – Tim Sherwood https://briefnews.eu/alexis-sanchez-to-man-utd-why-rivals-would-prefer-man-city-switch-tim-sherwood/ https://briefnews.eu/alexis-sanchez-to-man-utd-why-rivals-would-prefer-man-city-switch-tim-sherwood/#respond Thu, 18 Jan 2018 19:00:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/alexis-sanchez-to-man-utd-why-rivals-would-prefer-man-city-switch-tim-sherwood/

That is according to former Tottenham manager and midfielder Tim Sherwood.

Sanchez is closing in on a move to Manchester United, a deal which will see Henrikh Mkhitaryan head in the opposite direction to Arsenal.

Chile international Sanchez is set to earn a staggering £500,000-a-week when he signs a three-and-a-half year deal at United.

Sherwood says he is surprised at the amount Sanchez will get paid but admits it is part of modern football.

And he reckons the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham would have preferred the 28-year-old joined Manchester City as they are not a direct rival for the Champions League qualification places.

“It’s the way the game is but yeah it always surprises me,” Sherwood said on talkSPORT of Alexis Sanchez’s proposed wages.

“It’s a massive amount of money. He’s a good player.

“I think it’s bad news for every other team who are trying to chase the top four when he goes to Man United over City.

“I think it would have been a relief to everyone if he went to City.

“Although they’re home and dry he’s going to strengthen any team that he goes to.

“If he goes to Man United he’s going to make them better.”

‘Would you prefer pet or love?’ Virgin Trains apologizes for ‘sexist’ reply to customer complaint https://briefnews.eu/would-you-prefer-pet-or-love-virgin-trains-apologizes-for-sexist-reply-to-customer-complaint/ https://briefnews.eu/would-you-prefer-pet-or-love-virgin-trains-apologizes-for-sexist-reply-to-customer-complaint/#respond Tue, 02 Jan 2018 13:59:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/would-you-prefer-pet-or-love-virgin-trains-apologizes-for-sexist-reply-to-customer-complaint/ Virgin Trains has apologized “unreservedly” for replying to a sexism complaint with even more sexism. The rail company mocked a woman on Twitter after she complained about being called “honey” by a member of staff.

Passenger Emily Cole tweeted: “When Virgin Trains mess up and the older male train manager in the resulting conversation dismisses you with that hideously patronising word women shudder at in contexts such as these: ‘honey.’”

Virgin Trains, owned by Richard Branson, responded by saying: “Sorry for the mess up Emily, would you prefer ‘pet’ or ‘love’ next time?”

Cole shared the reply and wrote: “Wonderful to see that @virgin_trainsEC take complaints of rude and misogynistic behaviour seriously. Stunned.” Hundreds of others have since taken to Twitter to call out Virgin Trains, labeling their response “patronising,” “sexist,” “condescending” and “inappropriate.”

One Twitter user wrote: “So instead of giving good customer service, you thought it would be best to mimic the behavior being complained about?” while another said: “How is that appropriate on any level?”

Virgin Trains has now deleted its reply and apologized. It said: “We apologise unreservedly for this tweet and any offence that it may have caused. To avoid causing more offence we have deleted the original post.”

The embarrassing incident comes on the same day rail ticket prices increased, which is now usual in January. This year’s increase however was the biggest in five years, spurring dozens of protests against the rise by commuter groups and unions at the UK’s busiest stations on Tuesday. Private rail companies are not popular.

Senior Labour politicians joined protests over average fare increases of 3.4 percent and season ticket increases of 3.6 percent. The rise, the biggest since 2013, is more than the consumer price index inflation rate and well above average increases in annual earnings.

Rail bosses are defending the increase. The chief executive of Network Rail – the body which manages Britain’s rail infrastructure – Mark Carne said passengers would see many of the benefits of investment this year, including the final stage of London Bridge station’s reopening.  This will be followed by the upgraded Thameslink train service in May, and the start of Crossrail services by the end of the year.

He told the Guardian: “Obviously today we see a fare increase and I know passengers are not happy, nor with the reliability of the railway, and that’s why we are investing so heavily to improve it.”

It’s not the first time Virgin Trains has been called out for its questionable public relations. In August last year it was forced to release CCTV footage from one of its trains which proved Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn had not lied about having to join seatless commuters on the floor in a scandal dubbed ‘Traingate.’

Corbyn was filmed by freelancer Yannis Mendez from the floor of a train where he chose to sit instead of upgrading to first class on his way to Newcastle from London. After CCTV footage was released by Branson, appearing to show Corbyn and his team walking past empty seats on the train, he was accused of staging the scene to make a political point.

Plutocrat tycoon Branson tweeted: “What about all those empty seats he passed?”

Following the controversy, Mendez made a formal request for the complete CCTV footage. It took Virgin seven months to comply. The firm claimed it did not release all the footage due to “technical difficulties.”

However, the released footage showed the “empty” seats were in fact occupied, with some passengers only visible when they move into frame, or taken up by small children not visible from behind their seats.
