There’s a big update coming to the Google Assistant for iOS and Android today. Google is resurrecting the predictive Google Now cards that used to exist in the pre-assistant era, and the company is sticking them in the Google Assistant interface.

Before the transition to the Google Assistant and the Google (News) Feed, Google Now was one of the best parts of Android. This list of cards below the standard Google Search interface tried to show you information before you asked for it. This included things like travel times to your common places, upcoming appointments, flights, and the weather. Google Now would even do really smart things like tell you when to leave for an appointment based on the live traffic conditions between you and the appointment location. During the transition to the Google Assistant, these predictive cards were buried deeper in the UI, and eventually they just stopped showing up. Google ended up turning the card stream into a news article feed, and, for a while, there has been no way to see many of these predictive cards.

You always hear about the best time to book your travels for big savings, but do you ever follow up? Hint: You’re better off nabbing Thanksgiving flights now. That’s according to Hopper, a startup that relies on big data to help you purchase cheap airfares through its app. Now, it’s applying its predictive smarts to hotels, starting in NYC.

Why should you care? Let’s crunch the numbers. Hopper has amassed 17 million installs in just a couple years, and secured $ 83 million in funding along the way. To deliver the best deals, its algorithm consults around 10 to 15 billion historical flight prices per day. And, over time, it learns from your preferences to dish up personalized recommendations. The startup told TechCrunch its predictions are 95 percent accurate, up to six months in advance.

With its latest feature, Hopper is hoping to do the same with hotels. Its tech will collect 10 million price quotes daily for over 500 hotels in New York City, which happens to be its most popular travel destination — making it the ideal place to start. Of course, there are plenty of rival booking services out there already, so it will have its work cut out.

Like flights, hotels will be displayed on a color-coded calendar (and through a new map interface). Once you modify your selection — using filters for rating and location — the app will tell you whether to buy, wait, or if prices are expected to go up. Hotel profiles are also on hand in the form of Snapchat-style Stories. The update is initially available on iOS, and more locations (including San Francisco, LA, Miami, and more) will arrive soon.

Law enforcement has been trying predictive policing software for a while now, but how well does it work when it’s put to a tough test? Potentially very well, according to Chicago police. The city’s 7th District police report that their use of predictive algorithms helped reduce the number of shootings 39 percent year-over-year in the first 7 months of 2017, with murders dropping by 33 percent. Three other districts didn’t witness as dramatic a change, but they still saw 15 to 29 percent reductions in shootings and a corresponding 9 to 18 percent drop in murders.

It mainly comes down to knowing where and when to deploy officers. One of the tools used in the 7th District, HunchLab, blends crime statistics with socioeconomic data, weather info and business locations to determine where crimes are likely to happen. Other tools (such as the Strategic Subject’s List and ShotSpotter) look at gang affiliation, drug arrest history and gunfire detection sensors.

If the performance holds, It’ll suggest that predictive policing can save lives when crime rates are particularly high, as they have been on Chicago’s South Side. However, both the Chicago Police Department and academics are quick to stress that algorithms are just one part of a larger solution. Officers still have be present, and this doesn’t tackle the underlying issues that cause crime, such as limited access to education and a lack of economic opportunity. Still, any successful reduction in violence is bound to be appreciated.

DataRobot, a machine learning platform that helps enterprises build predictive models at speed, has raised $ 54 million in a Series C funding round led by existing investor New Enterprise Associates (NEA).

Founded out of Boston in 2012, the DataRobot platform features hundreds of open-source machine learning algorithms and harnesses best practices and knowledge from “the world’s leading scientists,” enabling users of all skill levels to build predictive models for their companies. Users upload their data, select their target variables, and DataRobot “automates, trains, and evaluates” multiple predictive models.

Though it can be used to help data scientists work more quickly and at scale, DataRobot is targeted at anyone within the enterprise who’s looking to tinker with artificial intelligence to see whether it can improve their decision making.

The company had raised around $ 57 million before now, including a $ 33 million round last February, and its latest cash injection will be used to “fuel the company’s mission to bring automated machine learning to mainstream business users,” according to a company statement.

More specifically, the funding will focus on three core areas of growth: DataRobot says it will double the size of its research and development team, expand its global presence, and increase its support for existing partners, which include Cloudera and Alteryx.

“Over the last four years, the DataRobot platform has been meticulously built, tested, and fine-tuned by the world’s leading data scientists,” explained Jeremy Achin, DataRobot cofounder and CEO. “By teaching machines to do 90 percent of the work that previously required a data scientist, DataRobot has truly automated predictive analytics.”

As companies increasingly look to streamline operations through automation, data science startups are ripe for investment. CrowdFlower, a company that combines human input with artificial intelligence to help teams organize their data at scale, raised $ 10 million last year from Microsoft, among others. And Eric Schmidt-backed data science startup Civis Analytics recently closed a $ 22 million round.

Aviso, which provides sales forecasting enhanced with machine learning for businesses, today announced a funding round of $ 8 million.

Based in Menlo Park, California, the startup sells software as a service (SaaS) that provides predictive analytics meant to help companies sell more. “Managers provide data-driven coaching sessions and sales teams take action early to close deals faster with insights powered by AI (artificial intelligence),” Michael Lock, chief executive of Aviso, wrote in an email to VentureBeat.

Lock just joined the startup as its new chief, taking the place of K.V. Rao, founder and former CEO, who is moving into the role of chief strategy officer. Lock certainly has credibility in the SaaS sector, as he was a founding executive at Google Enterprise, a business offering that’s now part of Google Cloud.

Aviso has 30 customers, including Apttus, HubSpot, Nutanix, Pandora, and Splunk. The startup charges an annual subscription fee based on user count and usage.

Predictive analytics in sales is a trending topic and has seen several acquisitions — InsideSales acquired C9 and its predictive cloud in 2015, and DxContinuum just got snatched up by ServiceNow for its machine learning capabilities. Big players like eBay and LinkedIn are also investing in this sector, so Aviso could one day get acquired too.

Scale Venture Partners, Next World Capital, and Shasta Ventures participated in this round. Aviso raised $ 15 million in its previous funding round, back in 2015, and just $ 8 million in this latest round. This isn’t a down round, though, a spokesperson told VentureBeat in an email.

“Aviso still has money in the bank from the last round,” the spokesperson wrote in an email to VentureBeat. “But given the incoming new CEO, the venture capital partners felt it important to increase the available cash on hand. This $ 8 million infusion gives us more than enough capital to fund the next phase of growth for the company.”

The new funds will be used to scale the product and expand the sales, marketing, and customer service teams, according to the spokesperson.

Founded in 2012, Aviso has raised a total of $ 31 million to date and currently has approximately 70 employees.
