By now you’ve heard the chant. Down 0-2 in the series, the Nashville Predators needed a serious boost — and they got it from their fans. After Nashville went up 2-1 in Game 3 at home, the Predators’ faithful struck up a now infamous taunt directed at Pittsburgh Penguins’ goalie Matt Murray. And with the chant came a shift in momentum, as Nashville won two straight at home to even up the series 2-2. But just where did the chant come from? It all started in section 303 of Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. According to their website, Lee Swartz, Mark Hollingsworth and Kurt Andress, joined by their love for hockey and palpable excitement for a new expansion franchise coming to Nashville, bought seasons tickets in the “cheap seats” so they could bring along friends and family. “We nearly decided on Section 331, but went with 303 because we could get a better site line on the team benches,” Swartz says on the website. Somewhat ironically given the matchup of this Stanley Cup final, Swartz also happened to be a passionate Pittsburgh Penguins fan when the team won two Stanley Cups in the early 90s and “experienced first-hand the amazing energy that fans can bring to a team.” The three men quickly made friends with other season ticket-holders near their seats, and a fan club was born. Early chants ranged from “Let’s Go Predators” to “Aaaaah, sit down, ya loser!” and even the now infamous “Goalie, you suck!” taunt. “There’s something quite amazing about hearing 17,000 people yell ‘you suck!’ in perfect unison at an opposing goalie,” Swartz says. By season two, other season ticket-holders were asking to have their seats moved to section 303. Almost 20 years later, the chants remain a staple at Predators’ home games If I don’t get one of these ” it’s all your fault ” chants in Nashville next season I’ll be super upset Add that to the catfish toss and Smashville fans are beginning to look like some of the most passionate and raucous in the league. stickhandling some fish pic.twitter.com/YmzEixWYSq We have called 13 different places in Nashville today about acquiring a catfish. They are all sold out. #StanleyCuppic.twitter.com/3cxdQtJFWM Just don’t call them bandwagon fans. For the dummies saying Preds fan support is new — Nashville season attendance %: 17: 100%

What first looks like a great save by Penguins’ Matt Murray turns out to be the third NHL goal for Nashville Predators’ rookie Frederick Gaudreau.
]]>On Monday evening, when the Predators scored a 4-1 win at home to knot the best-of-seven championship final against the Pittsburgh Penguins at two games each, goalie Pekka Rinne continued to prove his first two outings in the series were a blip.
But the oldest and most experienced NHLer on the Nashville roster, Mike Fisher, and the least experienced player, Frederick Gaudreau, also enjoyed nights to remember in Game 4.
After back-to-back losses last week in Pittsburgh in which he allowed eight goals on 36 shots, Rinne rebounded with 50 saves on 52 shots for two wins, the Predators’ eighth and ninth in 10 playoff starts at home.
The Finn particularly stood out in the second period with a couple stops on red-hot Penguins rookie Jake Guentzel, breakaways from Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz and a wild goal-mouth scramble on which Rinne needed some help from the friendly stick of Predators defenceman Roman Josi to keep Nashville in front 2-1.

Meanwhile, one of Fisher’s tasks in this series has been to harass and keep in check the best player in the world. Yes, Crosby finally broke through for his first goal of the series in the first period to tie the game at 1-1, and he enjoyed his best game of the final so far with four shots on goal.
But Fisher was at his chippy best, never missing an opportunity to annoy Crosby with a slash here, a crosscheck there. Fisher also won 13 of 23 faceoffs and nine of 13 against Crosby.
Fisher celebrated his 37th birthday on Monday. He played like he was a kid again, even though he missed the final two games of the West final against the Anaheim Ducks because of an undisclosed injury.
The Predators veteran from Peterborough, Ont., has four assists in the final and made a wonderful, determined play by diving to knock the puck ahead to linemate Viktor Arvidsson for a breathing-room goal a couple shifts after Rinne’s goal-mouth magical moment.
“[A win is] all I wanted for my birthday,” Fisher said. “Best gift I could get for sure.”
Fisher played in his 1,221st combined regular-season and playoff game on Monday. At the other end of the spectrum is Gaudreau. The 24-year-old from Bromont, Que., was playing in only his 15th NHL outing, and his sixth in the post-season.
He saw action in nine regular-season games and only was thrust into the spotlight when Ryan Johansen was lost with a season-ending leg injury in the last round.
His brilliant wrap-around, go-ahead goal on Monday was his second game winner and third goal of the series to become the first player in NHL history to score his first three NHL goals in the Stanley Cup final since Saskatoon’s Johnny Harms turned the trick with the Chicago Blackhawks in 1944.
Hip Check: Predators’ Gaudreau sneaks goal past Murray in Game 40:45
“Clearly the stage is not too big for him,” Fisher said. “It’s been unbelievable for us, the way he’s come in. He’s been so good. Timely goals, composed. He definitely belongs. He’s been a huge part of our success.”
Gaudreau has been an underdog throughout his career. He was underrated as a junior and undrafted in the NHL. His overage junior season, split between Shawinigan and Drummondville, in which he scored 32 goals and 71 points in 63 games, earned him an AHL contract with the Milwaukee Admirals.
This season, Gaudreau’s third as a pro, he has played with an unforeseen high level of confidence. He busted out for a 25-goal year in Milwaukee and scored three more times in three playoff games for the Admirals.
His play earned him a promotion with the Johansen injury, even if that has meant he doesn’t have a stall in the Predators’ dressing room because he was the proverbial last man in.
“I could be sitting on the floor and I would take it,” he said. “I’m just happy to be here. I don’t really care about the stall, to be honest.”
“Freddy, we’ll see what we can do,” Fisher chimed in. “We’ll see if we can squeeze him in somewhere.”

Detroit Red Wings fans have their octopi. The Panthers’ faithful in Florida had the “rat trick.”
Nashville? The Predators have catfish, the Southern staple that has become a beloved badge of honour fans delight in throwing onto the ice for good luck.
Who started Music City’s slippery tradition?
That man is Bob Wolf, and he feels his need for secrecy finally is at an end.
“It’s been 20 years almost, and it’s time,” Wolf said.
Nashville’s catfish tradition is well known around here, but it became national news earlier this week thanks to Jacob Waddell.

After an extraordinary effort to conceal a flattened catfish, Waddell threw it onto the ice — in Pittsburgh — on Monday night. Waddell was charged with disorderly conduct, possessing instruments of crime and disrupting meetings or processions before they were withdrawn.

Wolf watched all this from afar with some measure of satisfaction.
He says the idea to toss a catfish grew out a discussion at Wolfy’s during the Predators’ inaugural season, back in 1998-99. Wolf went into the restaurant business in Nashville and helped open the restaurant bearing his name. He also lobbied Nashville to build an arena to spur redevelopment of what then was a neighbourhood down on its luck.
Back then, he served burgers to construction workers and the Predators’ new owner, Craig Leipold. Once Nashville landed an NHL expansion franchise, Wolfy’s became a go-to stop for fans and players. There were also a fair number of Red Wings fans in the area, thanks to General Motors’ nearby Saturn plant and the automaker’s close ties to Detroit.
The Red Wings immediately became Nashville’s biggest foe.
A couple days before Detroit’s visit in January 1999, Wolf said, he sat with friends looking for a uniquely Tennessee answer to the Red Wings’ storied octopus tradition.
Wolf’s inspiration came when he walked outside and looked down Broadway to the Cumberland River.
Catfish!
Wolf bought a nine-pound catfish and wrapped it in newspaper and plastic wrap. On Jan. 26, 1999, Wolf tucked the catfish underneath his Predators’ jersey, walked in and waited for Nashville’s first goal.
Wolf said he tossed the catfish, then ran up the aisle. Friends around the arena provided cover and a distraction by running as well.
“The first time I saw the catfish flop on the ice, we were playing Detroit so I thought it was an octopus,” said Leipold.
“I was pleasantly surprised when I realized it was a catfish. I figured that it had to be one of our fans mocking the Red Wings. I was not disappointed.”
Wolf said Leipold, still a close friend, did not know about the catfish. With a small bar inside the arena, Wolf said he knew where to hide from security, too.
“It wasn’t meant to be anything but fun and answer Detroit’s call to their octopus,” said Wolf. “‘Hey, we’re the new Southern team on the ice, and we’re going to throw a catfish on the ice.’ That was kind of the attitude that day.”
Nashville was hooked. The catfish caught on. The tradition became so popular that officials started handing out delay of game penalties against the Predators, which put things on ice for a while.
With the Predators’ in the playoffs for the 10th time in 13 years, there has been a catfish comeback.
Five hit the ice one night early in the playoffs. The offensive linemen of the NFL’s Tennessee Titans held up catfish while revving up fans before another game. Country star Keith Urban even held up a catfish, and the linemen had more catfish for Game 6 of the Western Conference finals. When Colton Sissons finished a hat trick, left tackle Taylor Lewan celebrated by throwing a catfish instead of a hat.
Little Fish Market in Nashville was offering a free catfish to fans with a ticket to Game 3 or Game 4.
The Predators don’t discuss security procedures, and it’s not clear how many catfish will be in attendance — in secret or otherwise. No etiquette exists for the best time to throw a catfish, though fans have largely avoided throwing them on the ice during play this season.
Tossing catfish during pregame festivities appears to work best for fans, with one caveat: Don’t hit the anthem singer.
Pete Weber, the Predators’ radio play-by-play man, loves explaining to outsiders why Nashville fans toss a catfish.
“I really tend to get tickled when I see a catfish go over the glass,” Weber said. “I absolutely love that.”
Wolf marvels at the Predators’ success and the tradition that started with a single fish.
“The idea was to keep it a secret, and obviously we did a good job until the Pittsburgh fish,” Wolf said. “And this story has to get out. It’s a fun story, and it sets the record straight.”

Jake Guentzel helped the Pittsburgh Penguins avoid a humiliating defeat in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup final.
Guentzel broke a 3-3 tie with just over three minutes left in regulation as the Penguins hung on to beat the Nashville Predators 5-3 on Monday night. Pittsburgh had a 3-0 first-period lead completely unravel and failed to generate a single shot for about 37 minutes, including zero in the second period.
Sidney Crosby had two assists, Nick Bonino scored a pair and Evgeni Malkin found the back of the net as the Pens grabbed a 1-0 series lead. Conor Sheary also landed his first goal of the playoffs and Matt Murray made 23 saves.
Pekka Rinne was shaky in yielding four goals on only 11 shots for the Predators.
Ryan Ellis, Colton Sissons and Frederik Gaudreau scored for Nashville, their comeback attempt falling short in the first Stanley Cup final game in franchise history.
Mike Fisher was the only Pred with any experience in the final previously, but it was Nashville that looked at home early.
They even appeared to score first when P.K. Subban drove a blast past Murray less than seven minutes in. The former Canadiens defenceman broke into an exuberant celebration after the apparent goal, but his excitement was dulled when Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan challenged the play for offsides.
After a lengthy review, which saw officials huddled over an iPad at centre-ice, the goal was called back with Filip Forsberg deemed to have entered the zone early.
Dulled in their attack to that point, the Pens started to pick it up after the favourable decision and with just over six minutes left in the period, gained a full two-minute five-on-three advantage. Calle Jarnkrok drew the first whistle for interference and James Neal added the second with a needless cross-check on Trevor Daley.
Traded from Pittsburgh to Nashville for Patric Hornqvist (who drew the Jarnkrok penalty) in June 2014, Neal was booed when he was introduced before the game and grinned in response.
Malkin made him and the Preds pay with a one-time blast from the point — his eighth goal and 25th point of the playoffs. He was helped by Guentzel’s presence in front and Crosby, who got the play started by blocking Mattias Ekholm’s clearing attempt behind the net.
Containing Crosby and Malkin was a top priority for Nashville heading into the final with the Penguins duo — chasing their third Cup together — ranked Nos. 1 and 2 in post-season scoring.
Those efforts failed again with the Pittsburgh captain keying the second Penguins goal 65 seconds after the first.
After Brian Dumoulin kept a clearing attempt in at the blue-line, Crosby got the puck down low, fought off a check and then found Chris Kunitz high in the zone. The double overtime goal-scorer in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference final, Kunitz quickly found Sheary on the weak-side and he fired past Rinne.
Bonino added the third goal in just over four minutes and third on seven shots to beat Rinne, a star through the first three rounds who gave up three goals total in a first round sweep of Chicago.
The first 20 minutes didn’t come up without some concern for the Penguins.
Shortly before Malkin opened the scoring, Murray came up in some discomfort after a save and stayed down on one knee in the crease as the play went the other way. At the TV timeout, the 22-year-old, who only recently returned from a lower body injury, went to the bench and spoke to the team trainer as well as Marc-Andre Fleury, who had the starting role before Murray returned last round.
Whatever momentum Pittsburgh built with their three-goal first was gone by the second. Nashville dominated the period with shift after shift buzzing in the Penguins zone and hammering their weakened defence — which is without top defender Kris Letang.
They got on the board with a power-play goal from Ellis, set up by Subban. Viktor Arvidsson screened Murray on the shot, the puck screaming between his legs and into the net.
The Pens failed to land a single shot on Rinne for the entire period and were outshot 9-0. They became the first team to go shot-less in a period in a Stanley Cup final game since the NHL began tracking shots on goal in 1957-58.
Their struggles continued in the third with the Preds blocking shots or breaking up their attempts to make plays in the offensive zone as the home crowd moaned. Pittsburgh was still without a shot from the first period when Sissons pulled Nashville to within one with the Preds second power-play goal of the night.
Even a power play didn’t help with the Pens failing to land a shot.
It was shortly after that the Preds completed the comeback from 3-0 with Gaudreau depositing his first NHL goal on a feed from Austin Watson behind the net. An undrafted rookie centre from Quebec, Gaudreau was playing in only his 12th ever NHL game — regular season and playoffs combined.
Guentzel finally got the Penguins a shot and the go-ahead goal and his 10th of the playoffs with just over three minutes left. The rookie beat Rinne off the rush to end a 37-minute shot-less spell for Pittsburgh.
Bonino added his second of the game into an empty net.
