A team of mathematicians has devised the most precise recipe yet for blowing perfect bubbles, and it’s not just for fun and frolics. Achieving a better understanding of the dynamics at work could lead to more efficient industrial production of commercial sprays and foams, like shaving cream or Reddi-Wip—pretty much anything that has drops or bubbles in it.

Bubbles have long been serious science. Back in the 1800s, Belgian physicist Joseph Plateau outlined four basic laws of surface tension that determine the structure of soapy films. Surface tension is why bubbles are round; that shape has the least surface area for a given volume, so it requires the least energy to maintain. (As gravity pulls the liquid downward in a process known as coarsening, the shape starts to look more like a soccer ball rather than a perfect sphere.) American botanist Edwin Matzke used to build foams by hand in his lab in the 1940s, bubble by bubble, the better to examine their structure.

More recently, Irish mathematicians used computer modeling in 1994 to determine the best geometric shape bubbles can take for most efficient packing, while other scientists have used acoustic levitation—powerful sound waves—to suspend bubbles in mid-air. In 2006, Harvard University scientists figured out that adding tiny colloidal particles to the mix created a kind of coating or armor, producing much more stable bubbles that could be reshaped and molded at will. It’s even possible to build rudimentary microfluidic bubble-based logic devices to transport therapeutic drugs or chemical reagents.

But almost a third of 2,000 adults quizzed said they checked them fewer than 10 minutes before trying to drop off. 

Four in 10 said they slept better solo, with three in 10 saying their partner’s incessant snoring kept them awake at night. 

Women were more likely to turf out their other half to improve sleep quality. 

Half of respondents said they were more irritable after a bad night, with one in five saying he or she was more likely to eat junk food and nod off during the day.

One in three said he or she read a book before bed to help him or her fall asleep, while four in 10 need the room to be completely dark and a quarter need total quiet to drift off. 

Most of those polled slept on their right side and most lived up to the national stereotype by hitting the hay in pyjamas, with fewer than a quarter going to bed naked. 

But while one in five thought getting intimate with a partner guaranteed a good night’s rest, many blamed their lack of slumber on the bedroom being too hot. 

Jas Bagniewski, of mattress retailer Eve Sleep, which commissioned the poll, said: “As a nation we are wise to the basics, like getting a solid eight hours. It still seems that we have some way to go towards putting this knowledge into practice, though. A massive 50 per cent don’t sleep well because they are too hot – and the good news is that really is easy to fix. 

“A breathable mattress can make a significant difference. Couple that with bedding made of a breathable fabric like linen, which allows for good airflow and absorbs moisture, and you should see a very fast improvement.”

For the first time ever, a team of eye surgeons were able to inject a thrombolytic drug directly into a patient’s retinal vein to dissolve a blood clot. It was a success despite the fact that the vein is as thin as human hair thanks to a surgical robot developed by researchers from KU Leuven, a university in Belgium. The condition they treated is called retinal vein occlusion, and it leads to reduced eyesight and blindness. At the moment, doctors can only suppress its effects with monthly eye injections, because the retinal vein itself is only around 0.1 millimeter wide. It’s just much too thin for manual injections when the drug has to be administered for 10 minutes straight.

Professor Peter Stalmans, an eye surgeon at University Hospitals Leuven, said:

“The current treatment for retinal vein occlusion costs society €32.000 per eye. This is a high price tag, considering that you’re only treating the side effects and that there is little more you can do than avoid reducing eyesight. The robotic device finally enables us to treat the cause of the thrombosis in the retina. I look forward to what is next: if we succeed, we will literally be able to make blind people see again.”

To address the issue, the researchers created a robot that can help a surgeon insert the needle precisely and then hold it perfectly still. They also designed the 0.03 millimeter needle, which is three times thinner than human hair, needed to inject the drug into the tiny vein. According to the university, the method successfully dissolved the blood clot and the patient is now doing well.

However, it’ll take some time before everyone else who has the condition can go through the same treatment: the surgery was merely part of the first phase of the method’s clinical trial. The surgeons have to replicate the procedure’s success on other patients and then study its effects in the trial’s second phase.
