Warning: The following contains spoilers for Sunday’s series finale of Preacher. If you’d rather watch first, read later, for heaven’s sake, move on.

Though Preacher’s series finale was titled “End of the World,” Sunday’s episode didn’t actually turn out to be all that apocalyptic. Yes, characters were killed right and left — and the ones we really cared about had all joined the dearly departed by the time the epilogue was over — but doomsday, it wasn’t. Read on, and we’ll not only review how disaster was averted, we’ll discuss who got served their just desserts and who got to live happily ever after… at least until that 40-year flash-forward.

preacher-recap season 4 episode 10 series finale end of the world‘IF HUMPERDOO LIVES, EVERYONE DIES’ | Though Cassidy assured Humperdoo that he looked “like a dead ringer for Gene Kelly… if he’d been struck by lightning,” the messiah, knowing his tapdancing would set in motion The End, was reluctant to take the stage at the Apocalypse Revue. When Tulip arrived on the scene, she and Cass fought — and I mean brutally, physically fought — over whether to save the world by killing Humperdoo. (Their battle was juxtaposed in stylish-as-hell fashion with Jesse and the Saint’s, and Hitler and Jesus’, brawls.) In the end, Cass reluctantly agreed with Tulip, and with the messiah’s blessing — urging, even — put a bullet in his head.

Meanwhile, Featherstone, having been wholly disillusioned by Starr — and having failed in her suicide attempt — trained a gun on her boss/lover. But, before she could pull the trigger, he distracted her with just enough sweet talk to allow him get the drop on her. (RIP, Flufferman.) At the same time, the Saint defeated Genesis’ parents, and at last got Jesse exactly where for so long he’d wanted him. But when the preacher asked if one last kill was really what the cowboy wanted, he instead allowed Jesse to kill him. (There was more to it than that, but we wouldn’t find that out until later.) After Jesus throttled Hitler and turned down God’s offer to be the new messiah, the Almighty hopped on his motorcycle and fled. Not that Jesse was gonna let Him get away that easily. After telling the crowd at the Revue that he was done searching for God, he used Genesis to assign them all that task.

preacher-recap season 4 episode 10 series finale end of the world‘THE THREE OF US SAVED THE WORLD IN, LIKE, AN ACTUAL SENSE’ | After we saw Eugene reject a plastic surgeon’s attempt to assist him in suicide — Arseface became a punk-rockin’ busker instead — and Jesse, Cass and Tulip took a moment to marvel at the magnitude of what they’d done, we flashed forward by two years. In that time, Jesse and Tulip had moved to Texas, where they were raising a baby girl and hearing now and again from Cass. (“Apparently, he threw up with Woody Harrelson.” We’d have expected nothing less.) The couple’s blissful existence was soon shattered by a phone call: God had been found. So Jesse took off for a long-overdue showdown with the Almighty at the Alamo.

After establishing that he could use Genesis on God, Jesse sat down with the Big Kahuna to ask his questions, the most important of which was, “Is my dad in heaven?” And yes, despite Jesse’s fervent prayer that his father burn in hell, God had sent him to heaven instead. That, He said, “was an expression of my love. I love you, Jesse Custer.” Now, He wanted Jesse to say it back. And just like that, Jesse got it. “Your great design is being loved, right?” he said. “That’s the why” of it all. Look, God replied. Just say the words, and He’d go back to heaven. Nope. Jesse reckoned “that we would all be better off without a needy little bitch like you around.” So he used Genesis to throw God around a bit, then ordered Him to stay the hell out of heaven. He even released Genesis. Why? “I don’t f—in’ need it,” said Jesse, throwing one last punch. When the Almighty threatened him, you know, almightily, Jesse scoffed. “Still won’t make me love you.” Take that!

preacher-recap season 4 episode 10 series finale end of the world‘WHAT IF I CHOOSE… HATE?’ | Later, we learned that Jesus was stuck in purgatory. Well, not literally, but he was working in customer service at a Home Depot type store, so same diff. Starr appeared to be living large, working on his golf game and tossing in the sand trap the Pensacola cops who tried to arrest him. Eventually, God returned to his throne, only to find the Saint waiting for him. He’d avoided hell, you see, by making a deathbed confession to Jesse. Offering to return the cowboy’s family to him, the Almighty pleaded, “Let me give you an eternity of love.” Opting for hate instead, the Saint put a bullet in God’s head and made himself comfy in His throne. Finally, as Jesse and Tulip enjoyed a John Wayne movie at the drive-in, we glimpsed Genesis flying by in the night sky.

From there, we zoomed forward four decades to find Cassidy making an appearance at the tail end of Jesse’s funeral, when only his and Tulip’s daughter (and her kids) were around. Thanks to the gravestones, we learned that the lovers had died only a year apart. And thanks to their grown daughter (a bewigged Ruth Negga), we learned that they’d never stopped talking about Cassidy, who, in all those years, hadn’t visited. Where was he off to next? “Someplace new,” he told her. And, with that, he turned and walked into the sun, eschewing his umbrella to burn up. And that, Preacher fans, was that. Preacher Final Season Premiere Recap: It’s the End of the Whirl as We Know It https://briefnews.eu/preacher-final-season-premiere-recap-its-the-end-of-the-whirl-as-we-know-it/ https://briefnews.eu/preacher-final-season-premiere-recap-its-the-end-of-the-whirl-as-we-know-it/#respond Mon, 05 Aug 2019 03:18:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/preacher-final-season-premiere-recap-its-the-end-of-the-whirl-as-we-know-it/ “Feels like the end almost,” said Tulip at the beginning of Preacher’s fourth and final season premiere. And right she was. Though Sunday’s “Masada” and “The Last Supper” were every bit as violent and wacky as any other episodes — as a fan would hope, even demand — it definitely seemed like the series was working up to something. But what? Read on, and we’ll go over the clues, zany and inscrutable as they may be.

preacher-recap season 4 episode 1 masada last supper‘I REALLY LOVE WHAT LORD FRANKENSTEIN’S DONE WITH THE PLACE’ | After a prologue in which a newly-blond Cassidy and Tulip fell into bed and Jesse fell — well, more likely was pushed — out of a plane, we flashed back to a coupla months earlier. At Masada — “the Grail’s command center for over 2,000 years,” per Featherstone — Cassidy was used by torture instructor Frankie Toscani to demonstrate how repeated circumcisions were more effective at inflicting pain on a vampire than mere gunshots. Thankfully, help was on the way. Or at least it was on its way to being on the way. At the nearby Holy Bar & Grail Motel bar, Jesse used Genesis to recruit a bunch of Grail operatives to assist in his and Tulip’s attempt to save their pal. From there, we briefly — mega briefly — cut away to The Saint and Eugene, who had tracked Jesse to Angelville. So I suppose you could say they were lukewarm on the trail.

Back at Masada, Herr Starr felt so well-prepared for Jesse’s arrival — what with himself and his operatives all having been outfitted with noise-cancelling headphones, and a deaf, dumb old lady (his words) on hand to relay the preacher’s remarks — that he allowed his nemesis to stroll right in. And he was quick to turn down Jesse’s offer to fix the urethra on his noggin in exchange for Cass’ freedom. “You’re here,” Herr Starr explained, “to have a giant vagina carved into your head!” Of course, that didn’t happen since Herr Starr’s guards were the operatives from the bar who’d been Genesis-ized. When they opened fire, Herr Starr lost an ear, and Jesse got himself an escort to Cass, beat the crap out of Frankie and his students, and released his buddy, who wasn’t nearly as grateful as one might expect that his pecker was being spared any further Ginsu-ing.

preacher-recap season 4 episode 1 masada last supper‘MY FORESKINS CAN NEVER REPAY YOU’ | En route to the exit that Tulip and her crew of Genesis-ized Grail operatives were supposed to keep open, Jesse and Cass bickered, as they often have, like an old married couple. Cass was peeved by most everything, from Jesse’s love of playing the hero to the fact that he hadn’t brought any Percocet. “Why would anyone bring a bloody torture victim painkillers?” Cass snarked. Outside, Tulip’s cover was blown, and though she managed to dispatch all of the guards, the door still slammed shut — ew! Right on Tammy, her most helpful assistant. Luckily, despite being basically bisected, Tammy lived long enough to tell Tulip that there was a switch to open the door at the mountaintop. Which wasn’t ideal, but what the hell? Tulip would just free-solo it.

When the badass reached her destination, she found — who else? Featherstone. The two of them shot at each other so perfectly that their bullets collided, then they threw one another around a bit until, finally, Tulip sent her archenemy hurtling off the side of the mountain… only to discover that her suit could basically transform her into a flying squirrel! By the time Tulip finally got the door open, Jesse and Cass’ argument had gotten more serious. In other words, Tulip’s name had come up. “We’re not gonna talk about her ever again,” Jesse ordered. “Not one more word.” And, since Cass suddenly refused to leave, their never again discussing the woman they both loved seemed like a distinct possibility.

Preacher recap final season 4 premiere masada last supper‘BIG THINGS ARE COMING FOR YOU’ | As “Masada” drew to a close, Jesse and Tulip, back at the Holy Bar & Grail, couldn’t believe that Cass had stayed behind. “Does he know I’m here?” she asked. “Did he ask about me?” Both of which seemed like terrible things to say to a jealous boyfriend. In response, Jesse inquired whether Tulip had slept with the vampire — he wouldn’t be mad if she had, he swore. Still, she lied that she hadn’t. So the following day, they’d return to Masada and drag Cass out whether he liked it or not. At least that was the plan. But overnight, Jesse had an apocalyptic dream that included him receiving a call from his father (“Time to find God, son”) and choking Herr Starr… who then turned into Tulip. “No more dreaming,” she said in a voice that was not her own. “This is your wake-up call.”

Afterwards, Jesse left a letter for Tulip and took off hitchhiking to (no doubt literally) God knows where. As Cass was returned to his cell, Tulip eyeballed her Grail disguise in the motel closet (and c’mon, had to wonder whether hers could turn her into a glider like Featherstone’s did). Finally, Herr Starr offered a diet Dr. Pepper to God, who called it “one of my greatest creations,” and grumbled about having had to let Jesse leave with a pulse. “You wanted to make him suffer, yes?” said the Almighty. “So let’s make him… suffer.” From there, we jumped to “The Last Supper,” which started with a flashback to God watching his latest creation — a brontosaurus, if I’m not mistaken — take a s— and then, erm, eat it. “You were tested,” the Lord cried, “and you have failed!” So He destroyed all of the dinosaurs.

Preacher recap final season 4 premiere masada last supper‘PUT DOWN THE BEER AND GRAB SOME KLEENEX, YOU BABIES’ | While hitching a ride with a porn star/chicken farmer, Jesse admitted that he only had the vaguest idea of where he was headed for his confab with God. All he really knew was that it was gonna take place atop a mountain that looked like a penis. (On this show? Of course it was!) They parted ways when he stopped to help a little boy crying at the side of the road… who it turned out was, as Chicken Lady predicted, a thief. At Masada, Frankie asked Cass why he hadn’t gotten while the getting was good. “You know us Irish,” the vamp replied. “Never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity.” But he was still trying to escape. His new plan just involved him chewing off his ankle to get free of his chain. Tulip was still trying to spring him, too. However, even firing a bazooka at the front door didn’t so much as dent the thing!

As Cass went on an all-you-can-eat tour of Masada, Featherstone, her bloodlust increasing by the minute, it seemed, pursued Tulip to the Holy Bar & Grail. Luckily for her, Kumal the barkeep didn’t reveal that she was hiding out there. Meanwhile, Jesse made tracks by the hardest, first with an ill-fated fellow on an also ill-fated camel. At a meeting with Grail bigwigs, Herr Starr lied that Humperdoo was safe and sound, when of course, with so many clones running around, he had no idea which Messiah was the real one. When a delegate questioned Herr Starr, Featherstone put him in a box with a grenade. “Someone please,” he cried before exploding, “erase my search history.” Bonkers. This show is so, so bonkers! As the smoke cleared, Herr Starr told the shaken survivors that “the Holy Child will be revealed soon enough.” Needless to say, there were no further questions.

‘MIND THE TIP’ | After stealing a Grail doctor’s clothes, Cass made it back to the exit, where the door was opened for him without incident. Alas, the sun was so bright outside that he couldn’t exit stage left. Soon enough, he was back in Frankie’s custody. Back at the bar, Kumal warned Tulip over and over again that he had a bad feeling about the mission she was undertaking. Nonetheless, “I don’t wait and see s— for anybody,” she said. Later, he phoned Featherstone to plead with her not to hurt Tulip. Mm-hmm, because that sounds like something Featherstone would totally consider. He needn’t have worried, though. When she and her Grail flunkies came after Tulip, our heroine eluded them with ease. At the airport, Jesse learned from a pilot that the rock he was looking for was an ancient sacred site in Australia called The Lost Apostle. Jesse also remembered that he left his lighter in Chicken Lady’s truck, meaning he had to pay a visit to her at De Sade House of Entertainment.

There, Jesse retrieved his lighter without incident. But before he could leave with the pilot as his Lyft driver, they spotted a little boy in the clutches of the pornsters. As they entered the house of ill repute to play hero, Herr Starr — sporting a new ear apparently made from parts of Cass’ pecker? — observed on a monitor. Back in the desert, those injured during Tulip’s one-woman demolition derby were taken to Masada by Grail medics. Among the patients: Ha! Tulip in her Grail disguise. Kumal had actually been driving Tulip’s car, Tulip had been driving a stolen Grailmobile! Brilliant! As Part 2 of the premiere drew to a close, it appeared that Jesse had actually boarded a plane to Australia… with Cassidy on it. Only Cass was just a figment of his pal’s imagination, a manifestation of his guilt over leaving the vamp and Tulip behind. Finally, we saw God enjoying his favorite beverage while contemplating a bunch of figurines significant to Jesse’s journey thus far.

So, what did you think? Were you pleased that the flash-forward paired Tulip and Cassidy? Are you more psyched that the new season has begun or bummed that it’s the last? Grade the premiere in the poll below, then comment away.

Preacher to End With Season 4 at AMC https://briefnews.eu/preacher-to-end-with-season-4-at-amc/ https://briefnews.eu/preacher-to-end-with-season-4-at-amc/#respond Mon, 08 Apr 2019 21:27:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/preacher-to-end-with-season-4-at-amc/

Sorry, Preacher fans, but your prayers have not been answered: The action-packed AMC drama will end after its upcoming fourth season, which will debut on Sunday, Aug. 4.

Based on the Garth Ennis/Steve Dillon comic book, Preacher starred Dominic Cooper as Jesse Custer, a laconic preacher in rural Texas who finds himself possessed by a supernatural force and locked in an epic battle of good versus evil. (That battle involves lots of high-octane, kick-ass fight scenes, by the way.) Oscar nominee Ruth Negga co-starred as Jesse’s gun-toting girlfriend Tulip, with Joseph Gilgun playing Irish vampire Cassidy.

Executive producer Seth Rogen confirmed the news with a tweet on Monday, referring to Season 4 as the “final season”:

Debuting in May 2016, Preacher got renewed for a fourth season in November, with production relocating to Australia. TVLine’s Cable Renewal Scorecard has been updated to reflect the final-season news.

‘Dance of hate’: Release of Islamic State-supporting preacher will fuel extremism, experts warn https://briefnews.eu/dance-of-hate-release-of-islamic-state-supporting-preacher-will-fuel-extremism-experts-warn/ https://briefnews.eu/dance-of-hate-release-of-islamic-state-supporting-preacher-will-fuel-extremism-experts-warn/#respond Wed, 03 Oct 2018 19:41:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dance-of-hate-release-of-islamic-state-supporting-preacher-will-fuel-extremism-experts-warn/ The impending release of convicted Islamic State-supporting hate preacher Anjem Choudary could heighten the threat from both Islamists and the far-right, counter-extremism experts have warned.

The Faith Matters counter-extremism network, quoted in the Independent, warned Choudary is a part of a “dance of hate where the only ones to profit have been the extremists.”

Not only will British Islamist activity increase following his release but far-right extremism too, the group forecasts. Faith Matters noted that already far-right activists have launched petitions and are planning protests focused on Choudary’s release.

“It may also embolden enablers of Islamist extremism who continue to promote a ‘them and us’ mentality that seeks to mentally marginalize British Muslims from mainstream society,” the group said.

Choudary, one of Britain’s most high profile supporters of Islamic extremism, came to prominence in the early 2000s during the UK’s so-called ‘war on terror.’ The preacher and his group of Muslim extremists, Al-Muhajiroun, toured the country carrying out talks and protests targeting the government and promoting a ‘clash of civilisations’ narative between Islam and the West.

Al-Muhajiroun, now listed as a terrorist organisation by the US State Department, claimed the murderers of Lee Rigby and the London Bridge attack ringleader Khuram Butt were among its followers.

Fiyaz Mughal, the director of Faith Matters, told the Independent that Choudary’s extremist point of view must be “disrupted, challenged and pushed out of the public space at every point.”

He added that “Choudhary was regarded by many as a clown in the 1990s and with no real traction, yet we can see now just how mistaken this belief was.”

“He systematically preyed on vulnerable young men while inculcating them with messages of alienation and disaffection for our country. When groups like Isis and al-Qaeda came along, Choudhary’s warped beliefs bore fruit as the young men he helped brainwash headed out to areas such as the Middle East, while other associates such as Westminster attacker Khalid Masood sought to wreak terror on our streets.”

The preacher was mostly careful not to break Britain’s hate speech laws, but in 2015 he was convicted with inviting support of a proscribed organisation, namely Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), and sentenced to five years and six months in prison. Despite only serving a fraction of that time, Choudary is expected to be released on licence (parole) in October 2018.

Preacher Season 3 Finale Recap: Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel — Plus, a Who's Who of Who's Dead https://briefnews.eu/preacher-season-3-finale-recap-heaven-must-be-missing-an-angel-plus-a-whos-who-of-whos-dead/ https://briefnews.eu/preacher-season-3-finale-recap-heaven-must-be-missing-an-angel-plus-a-whos-who-of-whos-dead/#respond Mon, 27 Aug 2018 10:11:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/preacher-season-3-finale-recap-heaven-must-be-missing-an-angel-plus-a-whos-who-of-whos-dead/ Warning: The following contains massive spoilers for the Season 3 finale of Preacher. So if you haven’t watched yet and want to be surprised, imagine being told in Genesis voice not to read any further.

Sunday’s Preacher included a vampire feeding frenzy, strip-mall Nazis, a celestial captive, a soul-sucking Tony winner and a fight scene so brutal, it should have come with a warning that it might leave viewers vicariously concussed. In other words, it was exactly the Season 3 finale that fans of the wackadoo comic-book dramedy would have hoped for, if not outright demanded. Who managed to make it to the end of “The Light Above” alive — or, in the vamps’ case, undead? Read on…

preacher-season-3-episode-10-recap-finale-granma eccarius killed‘YOU STILL THINK LIKE A CUSTER’ | At the tail end of a prologue in which young Jesse tried but failed to work up the gumption to murder his Gran’ma, the older, ballsier version of our anti-hero arrived back in Angelville determined to do what he should’ve decades earlier. First, though, he’d have to make it through T.C., who was sure “there [had] to be a constructive, nonviolent solution” to Jesse’s beef with Miss Marie. Yeah, no. After using Genesis to have T.C. shoot himself in the foot, Jesse suggested that he and Jody retire to the Tombs. There, they engaged in the kind of knock-down, drag-out brawl that could send even a spectator to the chiropractor. Finally, Jody made the mistake of reminding Jesse of the night he’d killed his father. Filled to overflowing with rage, the preacher bashed his opponent’s head into the stone wall so many times, with such force, that it resembled a watermelon after a date with Gallagher. “I’m proud of you, boy,” said Jody, well past the point at which he should have been dead (and, to be clear, right before he died). Jesse gave T.C. the option of leaving before he torched the Tombs, but the perv declined. Without Angelville, he said, “I got nowhere else to go.” So OK, up in flames he went.

preacher-season-3-episode-10-recap-finale-granma eccarius killed‘FREE WILL HAS ITS CONSEQUENCES’ | Meanwhile, at the site of the bus crash, Rick and the other strip-mall Nazis told the Saint and Sidney, “Resist, and you will be liquidated.” Needless to say, the hellions resisted, and the hellions were not liquidated. While they decapitated the posers, back in the bus, Eugene thwarted Hitler’s escape attempt, and Tulip fought off a Nazi with a windshield wiper (because there is literally nothing that that badass can’t do). When the smoke cleared outside, Sidney asked the Saint, “All those crows… Do you think they pecked your daughter’s eyes out after she was dead or while she was lying there still alive?” I wouldn’t have thought it possible for the Cowboy’s gaze to get any darker, yet in that instant, darker it became. “Yeah,” said Sidney. “I think so, too.” Before he could tear her apart, the tank rolled forward and did exactly that to him. Nonetheless, by the time Sidney re-apprehended Tulip and Eugene, the Saint was able to launch a missile… which God, in turn, stopped in mid-air. “You see,” he told Tulip, “I am a loving God.” Only He wasn’t really. Though He offered to lift the O’Hare curse if Tulip would get Jesse off his back (lest Genesis interfere with his great design), He wouldn’t be sparing Eugene from a return to hell. When Tulip decided against the deal, God warned that Cassidy was in grave danger. “I was going to help to show you I’m a loving God,” He added, “but… ” More resolved than ever then to stick to her guns, Tulip called Him a d–k, He unfroze the missile and let the Cowboy, now miraculously back in one piece, remove Sidney’s eyes.

preacher-season-3-episode-10-recap-finale-granma eccarius killed‘GET A DUST BUSTER… AND MAYBE A SPONGE’ | Speaking of Cassidy and the grave danger he was in… Eccarius gave him one last chance to change his mind and save himself. Ultimately, Cass took him up on it. But he’d need some blood fast to heal his crucifixion wounds so that he could masturbate properly. And he didn’t want any old squirrel blood, either — he wanted human blood! Mrs. Rosen, of all people, volunteered to be turned. She didn’t even object when Eccarius proposed a crimson menage a trois. However, things were not as they seemed. When Eccarius bent down to Mrs. Rosen’s neck, he saw that there were already fang marks in it. What the what? With supernatural speed, the wannabe blood-suckers — who were now actual blood-suckers! — nailed Eccarius down (so that not even his shapeshifting could save him). Only then did Cassidy reveal that he’d turned Mrs. Rosen, and she’d turned everyone else. So “now what?” Eccarius asked Cass. “Go back to your loveless, lonely existence?” Sure, he replied. But first, dinner! With that, the vamps devoured the scumbag who’d deceived and destroyed so many of their pals. Later, as they were cleaning up, Hoover returned with big news for Cass: He’d quit the Grail. Oh, and he had a present for the vamp who’d saved him: an umbrella, which he advised be opened immediately. Er, why? Because at that moment, a Grail chopper pulled off the house from above the basement, exposing to the sun everyone but Hoover and Cassidy!

‘WELCOME HOME’ | When Tulip arrived at the scene of the vampire barbecue, she learned from Mrs. Rosen and her son (who’d apparently leapt into coffins when the s— hit) that Cass had been taken by the people in white. Them again! Back in Angelville, Jesse delivered to his Gran’ma the suitcase full of souls, enough to keep her going for another 100 years. He also used Genesis to make her release Tulip (cue the puke) and say aloud that his debt was paid. Technically, he’d gotten everything he wanted. Only now he knew that he couldn’t just leave Angelville. He had to kill Gran’ma and burn down the place. Miss Marie wasn’t scared, mind you. She simply revealed that she’d made a deal with her “gentleman caller” — Satan — that arranged for Jesse, not her, to go to hell, should he kill her. OK, so Jesse couldn’t throttle her like he wanted to. He could at least use Genesis to force her to destroy all the souls that she craved so badly. Thing was, it still didn’t feel to him like he’d won. So, after making it as far as the gates of Angelville, he turned around, went back and strapped his Gran’ma into her soul-sucking machine. Sure, when he died, he might go to hell. But “today,” he spat, “you burn.” (Hate to see Betty Buckley go, but man, was she ever a blast!)

preacher-season-3-episode-10-recap-finale-granma eccarius killed‘HOW DARE YOU PULL A GUN ON THE PRINCE OF DARKNESS?’ | In hell, Satan kept his end of his bargain with the Cowboy, returning his weapons so that he could resume pursuing the preacher… whose name was what? the devil asked. Hearing that it was Jesse Custer, Satan couldn’t contain his glee since he’d just struck a deal with Marie that would bring Genesis to hell if that particular preacher was killed. The Saint had a question, too: Whose idea had the crows been? Though Satan insisted that “it was God’s, of course,” the Saint shot him, releasing bats from the hole in his head. When the Cowboy left, having realized that Eugene didn’t belong in hell, he took the teen with him. But Hitler? Heil, no! He was right where he belonged — a fact born out when the fuhrer seemed to get awfully comfy awfully fast behind Satan’s desk! As the finale neared its conclusion, Jesse and Tulip took off to save Cassidy, who was at that moment imprisoned in a pit in Masada, an angelic fellow prisoner bound several feet above him. When Herr Starr learned that Hoover hadn’t been joking about being a vampire, he knocked off his henchman’s protective hat, burning him to a crisp. Finally, Starr revealed to Featherstone that he no longer wanted Jesse to be his messiah, he merely wanted revenge. Featherstone was thrilled, since that meant the chess match for world domination would continue. No, Starr replied. And as we got a hint of the massiveness of the war he seemed intent on starting, he said simply, “It’s time to play some f—ing checkers.”

So, what did you think of the Season 3 finale? The phrase “bats— crazy” comes to mind, no? Grade the episode below, then hit the comments with your hopes for Season 4.

Season three of Preacher premiered on Sunday, June 24 on AMC and threw fans right back into the heart of the action.

The AMC show picked things up straight off the back of season two as small-town preacher Jesse Custer (played by Dominic Cooper) and vampire Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) rushed to Angelville in the hopes of saving Tulip O’Hare (Ruth Negga).

Jesse went back to the one place he was trying to avoid: home. He took Tulip straight to his Gran’ma (Betty Buckley), who is a witch and has special powers of resurrection.

But saving Tulip came with a price as Gran’ma forced Jesse to do her bidding in return, leading to more mayhem.

Here’s a look at the cast of the AMC drama, which is available to watch on Amazon Prime in the UK.

HOW TO WATCH PREACHER SEASON 3 ONLINE

Who is in the cast of Preacher season 3?

Jesse Custer – Dominic Cooper

Dominic Cooper will be reprising his role as small-town priest Jesse Custer, who will be put to the test as he faces threats not just from his own grandmother but also The Grail.

British actor Cooper is best known for his roles in Mamma Mia!, Fleming, Agent Carter and The History Boys, among many other parts.

Speaking about the direction of season three and the leading trio, Cooper told Collider: “I think the biggest thing is about the family. And the different journey which we find, and how the three main protagonists go in their own directions.

“And their relationship becomes very complex and very difficult, and very impeded. And the thing we really, we found a lot about Jesse’s past. What he’s capable of, the dark side of him.

“Where Tulip’s kind of inspired change in direction comes from, and where can we end up. And they’re all very, very, very different places for each individual character.”

HOW MANY EPISODES ARE IN PREACHER SEASON 3?

Cassidy – Joseph Gilgun

Joseph Gilgun joins him as Irish vampire Cassidy as he too gets embroiled in the happenings in Angelville.

Gilgun’s previous credits include This Is England, Misfits and Emmerdale.

Cassidy is set to get into more fights this season as he and the others attempt to escape from Jesse’s sinister grandmother and continue to battle with The Grail.

Tulip O’Hare – Ruth Negga

Oscar-nominated actress Ruth Negga will be returning to her role as the sassy, no-nonsense Southern Belle Tulip O’Hare.

Negga’s biggest role to date was in Loving, which earned her an Oscar nod. Her other big projects include Misfits, Breakfast On Pluto and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Negga said about starring in the show: “It’s hard work. It’s actually physically and emotionally demanding. It’s long hours every day and, it’s a constantly evolving process, and it takes five months of your life.”

She revealed that she re-watched the show before filming resumed to help her get back into the character of Tulip, who ended up getting killed off in the shocking season two finale.

Herr Starr – Pip Torrens

Taking on the role of evil Herr Starr, who is a member of The Grail is Pip Torrens.

Torrens has starred in everything from The Crown, Poldark and Versailles to Black Mirror, Death in Paradise and Spooks.

He previously starred opposite colleague Cooper in Sky miniseries Fleming, which focused on the James Bond author.

WHERE IS PREACHER FILMED?

Lara Featherstone – Julie Ann Emery

Julie Ann Emery will be coming back as Lara Featherstone, who fans will remember shot Tulip dead in season two.

Her other credits include Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad and Fargo.

Marie ‘Grand’ma’ L’Angelle – Betty Buckley

Preacher fans will get to meet witch Marie ‘Grand’ma’ L’Angele in earnest in season three after a cameo in the second outing.

Gran’ma is portrayed by critically-acclaimed Broadway actress Betty Buckley and her previous roles include Hello, Dolly! and Cats.

Buckley has won Tony Awards and an Olivier for her theatre work, while her film and TV credits include Supergirl, The Leftovers and Split with James McAvoy.

Other cast members include Ian Colletti as Eugene Root, Outlander’s Graham McTavish as The Saint of Killers and Game of Thrones’ Noah Taylor as Adolf Hitler.

Preacher Season 3 Premiere Recap: Antipathy for the Devil — Plus: Was Tulip Left Pushing Up Daisies? https://briefnews.eu/preacher-season-3-premiere-recap-antipathy-for-the-devil-plus-was-tulip-left-pushing-up-daisies/ https://briefnews.eu/preacher-season-3-premiere-recap-antipathy-for-the-devil-plus-was-tulip-left-pushing-up-daisies/#respond Mon, 25 Jun 2018 03:33:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/preacher-season-3-premiere-recap-antipathy-for-the-devil-plus-was-tulip-left-pushing-up-daisies/ Betty Buckley… is… everything. Within moments of her first appearance in the Season 3 premiere of Preacher, the Tony winner told us all that we needed to know about Jesse’s infamous grandma, Marie L’Angell, and ratcheted up the series’ always-high level of bats— into the stratosphere. In other words, she slayed. Which was ironic, considering that “Angelville” began with Jesse and Cassidy arriving at the titular plantation in hopes of convincing her character to save Tulip from pushing up daisies. Did Madame L’Angell’s voodoo do the trick? As if you don’t already know, read on…

‘WEEBLE WOBBLE, BUT HE DOES FALL DOWN’ | Opening “years ago” at Angelville — aka “the place which burrows into your heart and will not seem to leave” — the episode immediately gave us a sense of both the power and the price of Madame L’Angell’s black magic: On one hand, we saw her cure a councilman of his urge to drink; on the other, a fellow who looked like a hobo begged Jesse’s mom Christina to return “it” until he was whacked by hired hand T.C. and “put back with the others” out of sight. Later, another henchman — Jody, the one who legend has it murdered Jesse’s father — caught Christina hiding something in her room. After she tried to make a run for it and was brutally returned to Angelville by Tweedle Scum and Tweedle Scummier, her mother demanded to know what it was. “Wouldn’t you like to know, you crazy bitch?” spat Christina before eating what turned out to be a photo of baby Jesse. Unfortunately, though Madame L’Angell proclaimed to love her daughter more than anything, she did want to know — so badly that she sliced open Christina and pulled the picture out of her! While Christina screamed, “Don’t you touch my Jesse,” her mother gave the order to “strap her in the machine.” (And you gotta give the show credit for the way it makes vague wording like “back with the others,” “the machine” and even “it” creeptacular.)

preacher season 3 episode 1 tulip lives‘LOOK WHAT THE CAT COUGHED UP’ | In present-day, when Jesse and Cassidy found the former’s family home apparently deserted, the vampire lit into his estranged pal anew for letting Tulip die. So ticked that he had no f—s left to give, Cassidy even went so far as to confess that he and the deceased had hooked up — before she was deceased, of course. The estranged buddies’ ensuing brawl was only put on pause when they were interrupted by T.C. and a wheelchair-bound Miss Marie, the embodiment of hell on wheels. Time being of the essence, Jesse quickly explained why they’d come, and in response, his grandma… rolled into the kitchen for a snack. As far as helping him went, she was — how to put this — not eager. “A betrayer, a boy who leaves his family to struggle and rot,” she hissed. “For him, I don’t need to help s—.” But since Jesse would do anything to save Tulip — and, as his grandma noted, “That’s a big word… anything” — she reminded him that he knew what she wanted. We didn’t know, mind you. Nor were either of them thoughtful enough to spell it out for us. However, it appeared to involve Jesse slicing open his hand and letting his blood drip on a napkin, which his grandma then drew into her lap.

preacher season 3 episode 1 tulip lives‘WHY CAN’T I DO ONE RIGHT THING?’ | A deal struck, Madame L’Angell sent Jesse to ask Jody where he could get some trance boil (at least I think that’s what they kept calling it). At the same time, Cassidy was to collect all the items on Jesse’s list of Tulip’s favorite things to entice her to return to the land of the living. But Jesse had her favorite music wrong, the besotted vampire protested. Joni Mitchell is her favorite. There was no time to argue, though. At that very moment, the woman they both loved was in purgatory. “Death’ll come to the door,” Madame L’Angell explained, “and when she answers, she’ll be gone for good.” So, off Jesse and Cassidy went. Finding Jody gutting an alligator, Jesse greeted him with “You’re probably still pissed.” Which, honestly, is probably the way he should greet most people he’s ever known. Taking in Jesse’s preacher garb, Jody replied, “You could dress up like your daddy all you want, kid, but you’ll never look more like your mama than you do right now” and pulled him into a hug. (So… not exactly the interaction I expected between Jesse and his pop’s killer.)

preacher season 3 episode 1 tulip lives‘THE MORE IT HURTS, THE MORE IT HELPS’ | While Jesse and Jody went to the Boyds’ to obtain trance boil — an idea so bad that shots were fired before the mission was completed — Cassidy went on his scavenger hunt and returned to find Madame L’Angell chewing on a scorpion pepper above Tulip’s body. “If the spirit senses your pain,” she explained, sometimes “it’ll come back to ease it.” Have one, she told Cassidy. “Maybe she’ll come back for yours.” From there, she spun a most manipulative yarn, about how once she’d loved someone who hadn’t loved her back — not until she’d cast a spell. Then he’d loved her day after day “until I killed him.” And she was so grateful to Cassidy for bringing Jesse home that if there was anything he ever wanted in return, all he had to do was ask. Meanwhile, Jesse and Jody returned. But before they entered the house — before Jody’d even hand over the trance boil — he wanted to fight. “Is today the day you finally beat me?” he asked Jesse. “For your lady love’s sake, I sure hope so.” Suffice it to say, this was not the day that Jesse beat Jody. As a matter of fact, had Miss Marie not intervened, Jody would have dropped a pickup on Jesse. (Does that mean he has superpowers or something?)

preacher season 3 episode 1 tulip lives‘WELCOME HOME, JESSE’ | In purgatory, Tulip hung with a younger version of herself and relived her father’s thwarted attempt to go straight. When at last there came a knock at the door from the Department of Family and Protective Services — a stand-in for death — our heroine reassured her younger self that it wouldn’t be any worse than her home life. But before opening the door, she noticed that the coffee table was now covered with her favorite things. Young Tulip was even chowing down on a bowl of Boo-Berry! Between the tempting offerings, Jesse’s proclamation that he needed his girlfriend back because “Who am I gonna rob a store with except for you?” and Cassidy’s putting on Joni Mitchell, Tulip was drawn back to the other side. Before waking up in her body, though, she met our dog-suited God, who told her that he was counting on her to help him fulfill his great design. (Mmkaaay… ) That night, as Tulip rested up after her ordeal, Jesse couldn’t help but picture Cassidy lying next to her in the bed. Calming himself with a whiskey, he was approached by his grandma, who was eager for reassurance that they had a deal. “Yeah,” he said. “Or I could cheat and change my mind, kill you like I shoulda done years ago. Wouldn’t take much. Push you over, you’d be dead before you hit the ground.” Her chilling response: “Push me. See what happens.” Rather than do that, Jesse agreed to honor their mysterious deal, at which point she reminded him — and this was even more chilling than her “Push me” — that she loved him more than anything. Just like she had his mother.

So, I can’t be the only one obsessed with the villainess that Betty Buckley is creating here, right? And how many of you are now Team Cassidy instead of Team Jesse in the battle for Tulip? Hit the comments after grading the episode.

zachary levi marvelous mrs. maisel

Zachary Levi, who will soon be seen in the superhero film Shazam, just landed a part on the second season of Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. The show is about a 1950s housewife who discovers her true calling is stand-up comedy, and stars Rachel Brosnahan. THR says Levi will play an “eclectic Manhattan doctor who suddenly starts orbiting the Weissman/Maisel world.” There’s no return date for the show yet, but you can probably look for it in 2019.

baby-sitters club

Remember The Baby-Sitters Club? I don’t! But Wikipedia tells me it’s a series of books “about a group of friends, girls between 11 and 13 years old, who live in the fictional, suburban town of Stoneybrook, Connecticut. These friends run a local babysitting service called the “Baby-Sitters Club.” The original four members were Kristy (founder and president), Mary Anne (secretary), Claudia (vice-president), and Stacey (treasurer), but the total number of BSC members varies throughout the series.” The books were previously adapted into a TV show in 1990. Now, a new Baby-Sitters Club show is in the works, per THR. The new show comes from Michael De Luca, Broad City’s Lucia Aniello, and GLOW’s Rachel Shukert, who’ll also serve as showrunner. That’s a pretty great behind-the-scenes team, so maybe this will turn out to be something special.

the middle spin-off

ABC’s The Middle has come to an end, but the network is looking to revive the series with a spin-off. The Middle spin-off will focus on character Sue Heck, played by Eden Sher. Deadline reports ABC is in negotiations to shoot a pilot, straight from The Middle creators and executive producers Eileen Heisler and DeAnn Heline. Deadline says “the concept for the series is still being honed in, with a couple of other writers from the original series expected to join Heline and Heisler,” and that the show will likely chronicle “the next stage of Sue’s life as a young adult with a new cast of characters around her.”

Preacher is returning for its third season, and here’s the trailer to prove it. The series, created by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Sam Catlin, and based on the comic from Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, started off staying faithful to the source material before going off into its own direction. It’s mostly successful, and I suppose is about the best possible network TV adaptation one could hope to get from this story. Now, season 3 will continue the story as “Jesse, Cassidy and Tulip return to Angelville, the Louisiana plantation where Jesse was raised and where old grudges and deadly obligations await them. With the help of his friends — and a few enemies — Jesse will need to escape his past…because the future of the world depends on it.” Preacher will premiere Sunday June 24, 2018 at 10/9c. on AMC. And if you want even more Preacher-related material, why not check out this behind-the-scenes video.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Season 4 Trailer

Netflix just launched the first-half of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt season 4 (in a very low-key manner), and now they’ve gone ahead and announced the premiere date for the second half, which will effectively bring the series to an end. The remaining six episodes of the fourth season of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt drop onto Netflix on January 25, 2019. In this latest season, “Kimmy (Ellie Kemper), Titus (Tituss Burgess), Jacqueline (Jane Krakowski) and Lillian (Carol Kane) are finding new direction in life and career. Kimmy jumps head first into her new job at Giztoob. She’s ready to take on anything, except high heels, which she’s pretty sure were designed by a man, or a very confused lady. By creating a fake TV show, Titus takes his acting career into his own hands. Which, as always, are covered in maple syrup. As a talent agent working her way up, Jacqueline must deal with clients who are divas, troublemakers, and have no valid social security number. All of these clients are Titus. Lillian continues to “disrupt” and “burst the paradigm,” or as it was called in the ’70’s “general dirtbaggery.”” I used to love this show – the first season was brilliant. Then it started to run out of steam, to the point where season 3 felt almost unwatchable. And now season 4 has essentially been dumped onto Netflix, with very little promotion. I’m sure I’ll catch-up and finish the series eventually, but I’m in no rush.

Lodge 49

AMC has a new series called Lodge 49, starring Wyatt Russell,  Brent Jennings, Sonya Cassidy, Linda Emond, David Pasquesi, and Eric Allan Kramer, and it sounds…weird. Here’s the rather lengthy synopsis:

Lodge 49 is a modern fable set in Long Beach, California and centered on Dud (Russell), a likable ex-surfer who attempts to maintain his positive outlook on life while still reeling from the death of his father, the collapse of the family business, and any semblance of the idyllic middle-class life he knew. Dud finds himself deposited by fate at the doorstep of Lodge 49, home to the Ancient and Benevolent Order of the Lynx, a dusty dying fraternal order.

There he meets his mentor, Ernie Fontaine (Jennings), a “Luminous Knight” of the Order, who sells plumbing supplies by day. Despite the constant pushback from his more skeptical, pragmatic twin sister, Liz (Cassidy), Dud and Ernie find themselves drawn by the Lodge into some long-buried secrets and modern day conspiracies. Through his newfound connection with the Lodge, its mysteries and its people, Dud comes to find the missing sense of purpose in his life and confront his deepest fears and greatest hopes.

Not really sure what to make of this, but hey, Paul Giamatti is one of the executive producers. That’s sort of cool.  The surfing aspect mixed with the mystery element remind me of the long-cancelled series John from Cincinnati. Remember that? I bet you don’t!  Lodge 49 will premiere on AMC August 6, 2018 at 10 PM.

In the wake of sexual misconduct allegations against star Kevin Spacey, it was assumed that Netflix’s House of Cards was over and done with. The showrunners had decided long before the Spacey situation that the upcoming sixth season would be the last, but then the allegations broke, Spacey was fired, and we all figured that was the last we’d seen of House of Cards. But Netflix decided to roll the dice and conclude the show with one last season after all, bumping Robin Wright up to the lead role. Wright took to Instagram to reveal a new image from the show, and announce that filming had officially wrapped. I’m very curious to see how the final season of the show plays out, and while previous seasons have been tainted by Spacey’s unpleasant legacy, I’m more than ready to see Wright take control of the series. There’s no official date yet, but the sixth and final season of House of Cards is expected to arrive in the fall.

evil genius review

Netflix’s Evil Genius, a true crime docuseries about the so-called “Pizza Bomber”, was fascinating. it was also a pretty open-and-shut story, wrapping things up at the end as succinctly as possible. Yet directors Barbara Schroeder and Trey Borzillieri say they might have more story to tell. Speaking with The Wrap,  Schroeder said, “We would love to do another deep dive into the characters in here, to reveal new information. We could do a Good Genius, too.” I’m not really sure what Schroeder means by the Good Genius part, and it’s worth nothing this isn’t an official announcement about Evil Genius season 2. This is merely the filmmakers saying they could definitely keep digging up more stories about the mysterious figures at the center of the story.
