Pimlico Plumbers founder Charlie Mullins has become a voice of reason to many TV watchers in recent months, joining the likes of Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid on Good Morning Britain for a number of debates. In his latest stint on the ITV show, Charlie found himself at the centre of a row surrounding compulsory vaccines for employees, a strategy now widely being tipped in businesses up and down the country. In an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk, Charlie discussed all about the backlash he’s received from his TV stints and why he’s supporting Andrew Neil’s GB News after it faced similar cancel calls.

“If I’m being honest,” Charlie began. “Whatever I’ll come out with, you’ve got the haters and the knockers. And they’ll always be there.”

Referring to the mandatory employee vaccine debate on GMB specifically, the Pimlico Plumbers boss continued: “But most people with common sense, they listen properly to it and comment from there, but most people comment on what they think they heard (and) saw.

“They read into it how they want to read into it, and I can’t change that, you know. I expect that backlash all the time.”

Charlie did mention, however: “I think the majority of people, I believe, see where I’m coming from and eventually agree with it.”

“I don’t feel I’ve done anything wrong and it will get the economy going again,” Charlie continued.

After being on the receiving end of social media critics and trolls himself, Charlie was then asked about the reaction GB News has faced ahead of its launch.

The upcoming news channel is chaired by Andrew Neil, who has promised to deliver “individual and news-based programmes, built around very strong presenters.”

However, the channel has faced criticism from The Financial Times as being “right-leaning,” and has even had a number of famous faces threatening a boycott.

Praising further, the Pimlico Plumbers boss continued: “He’s not everybody’s cup of tea and that’s when you can tell that he knows his stuff. 

“So I would say that’s a great move and I’m not sure why, again, why will people doubt it and start saying it’s going to be a bit like Fox News? 

“I mean, Fox News has still got a lot of good stuff on it. So if he’s [Andrew Neil] behind it, then I think what a great thing that is.

“You know, of course, and I look forward to being on it, because, again, I think he’s a fair guy but he also calls you out if he feels you’ve not got it right.”

The London Mayor claimed he was “impressed” with the diplomatic behaviour of the US President when he defended NATO against Emmanuel Macron‘s claim that the organisation is “braindead”. Asked by Piers Morgan to comment on the spat between the two leaders, Sadiq Khan admitted: “I was impressed by the behaviour of Donald Trump yesterday…”

The comment shocked the ITV host who interrupted Mr Khan to say: “Sorry, what? I think I just heard you right.”

As the London Mayor claimed credit had to be given when due, Mr Morgan said: “And I applaud you for giving credit when it’s due.”

But the praising of Donald Trump‘s behaviour did not last very long as Mr Khan was quick to criticise him again for changing his position on NATO.

He said: “The reason why this is important is because the US is the one superpower around now.

“They were one of the founders with us of NATO, the most successful multilateral organisation that existed for the last 70 years.

“Last year, by the way, he was threatening to pull the US out.

“A couple of years ago he said that NATO was obsolete.

Though the summit only began on Tuesday, it was immediately mired in strained relations between Turkey and other member states.

Mr Erdoğan has previously said he opposes NATO’s plan for the defence of the Baltic region should member states fail to back Turkey over its fight against Kurdish groups it considers terrorists.

Relations between the French and US leaders were already strained amid a trade dispute, and after President Macron last month labelled NATO as “brain dead” because, he claimed, the US’ commitment to the outfit was fading.

At a joint press conference held between the two leaders, the US president was less combative, stressing that the two countries had “done a lot of good things together”.

Strictly Come Dancing champion Stacey Dooley is known for her hard-hitting documentaries on the BBC.

Jesy revealed that things got so bad she thought about walking away from the band.

“Yeah [I nearly left the band],” she explained.

“For them, it was hard as well. They’re living their dream.

“To have someone constantly down and depressed all the time, you don’t want that when you’re living your best life. It was hard to be happy and console me at times.”

On Sunday morning, Jerome Drayton remained at his home a few miles away in the city's west end, while thousands of runners braved near-freezing temperatures at the 29th annual Toronto Waterfront Marathon.

The 73-year-old began the day with a strong grip on the Canadian men's record of two hours nine minutes 10 seconds, a mark that had stood since 1975 but had been threatened in recent years.

"It should have been gone about 30 to 40 years ago," Drayton told CBC Sports over the phone. "To me, it wasn't that fast. It wasn't a world record. I think the record in those days was 2:08-something."

Now battling arthritis in both knees, Drayton doesn't follow track and field much, besides watching the occasional Diamond League meet on CBC's Road To The Olympic Games weekend broadcasts. When Sunday's marathon drew to a close, he was in front of his television watching a movie.

"I switch over to CP24 on the hour to get the news," said Drayton, remembering when he first heard that Cam Levins of Black Creek, B.C., had shattered his record in a time of 2:09:25 in his marathon debut. "I figured he had a good chance of getting my record, based on his 5,000 and 10,000-metre track speed."

In his marathon debut, Cam Levins of Black Creek, B.C., broke Jerome Drayton's 43-year-old Canadian men's marathon record by 44 seconds. Levins finished fourth in the Toronto Waterfront Marathon with a time of 2:09:25. 1:48

Initially, Drayton wasn't disappointed at the news but added, with a laugh: "It would have been nice if he missed it for another year or so."

Confident, strong and relaxed

Levins, who wanted to debut on home soil and specifically in Toronto, pocketed $ 6,000 for placing fourth as the top Canadian men's runner and earned a bonus of $ 43,000 for the national record — $ 1,000 for each year Drayton's mark stood.

From the outset, the 2012 NCAA champion in the 5,000 and 10,000 looked confident, strong and relaxed. Levins had only started transitioning to half marathons last December following ankle surgery in July 2016 that wiped out much of his 2017 season.

Still, Drayton wasn't surprised by the 29-year-old's performance in Toronto, noting British distance legend Mo Farah clocked 2:08:21 in his marathon debut four years ago and placed third in the London Marathon this past April in 2:06:21.

"He seems to know what he's doing, in terms of nutrition and training for the marathon," Drayton said of Levins, who grew to like the longer, more tempo-based workouts of a marathon build compared to speed work on the track.

Arch support came loose

The Portland, Ore., resident, who entered the Toronto race feeling "in a lot of ways" as fit as any time in his running career, averaged about 257 kilometres (160 miles) a week and finished his build running at altitude for a month in Cedar City, Utah.

Unlike Levins' record-setting effort, Drayton's attempt on Dec. 7, 1975, on a rainy day at the unofficial world marathon championships in Fukuoka, Japan, wasn't nearly as smooth, but equally as thrilling.

The 30-year-old was leading late in what he figured was his 10th marathon when he noticed the arch support in his shoes had come loose. Forced to slow down, Drayton quickly realized the problem couldn't be fixed by moving his toes and recalled being passed by a smiling Australian opponent.

5-time marathon winner

"He probably thought I had hit the wall," said Drayton, who was born Peter Buniak before reportedly basing his new name on two runners he admired, one-time Canadian-record holder Harry Jerome and American runner Paul Drayton. "I noticed he was about 50 yards ahead of me and didn't increase his distance, so I went after him, caught him with about a half-mile to go and [won] by about 17 seconds."

Drayton, who won three titles at Fukuoka and marathons in Boston and Ottawa in between a silver medal at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, said he was "already long in the tooth" when he lost interest in hard training after the Canadian boycott of the 1980 Olympics in Moscow.

Levins, who finished top 15 in the 5,000 and 10,000 at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, England, sought the advice of Canadian sports physiologist Trent Stellingwerff in the months leading up to the Toronto marathon on how to properly fuel his body before and during the 42.2 km race.

Drayton, who was known for a high volume of training like Levins, said he would read anything related to health and fitness to help adopt the best training methods.

"It's not enough just to know about the human body as it relates to running," he said. "You gotta get to know yourself before you can break through as an elite marathoner."

US President Donald Trump praised the wrestling skills of Republican Congressman Greg Gianforte, who body-slammed a Guardian reporter to the ground at a campaign event last year. Needless to say, the liberal media is appalled.

Gianforte was convicted of assault after he grabbed Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs by the neck and body-slammed him to the ground at a campaign event on the eve of Montana’s special election in 2017. The slam broke Jacobs’ glasses and Gianforte punched the winded reporter on the ground.

Gianforte later apologized to Jacobs, donated $ 50,000 to the Committee To Protect Journalists, paid a fine and served 40 hours of community service. He went on to beat his Democratic challenger – country musician Rob Quist – and now represents Montana in the House of Representatives.

Speaking to supporters at a campaign-style rally in Missoula, Montana, on Thursday, Trump praised Gianforte’s wrestling skills, drawing cheers and laughs from the crowd.

“By the way, never wrestle him,” Trump said. “Any guy that can do a body-slam, he’s my kind of guy. He’s my guy.”

Trump recalled hearing about the incident while he was in Rome, and Gianforte was pulling ahead in the polls. “And I said, oh, this is terrible. He’s going to lose the election,” Trump recalled. “And then I said, well, wait a minute. I know Montana pretty well. I think it might help him. And it did.”

The fighting talk continued later in the rally, when Trump brought up former Vice President Joe Biden’s comment that he would “beat the hell out of” Trump, were the two in high school together. “He’d be down, faster than Greg would take him down,” Trump said.

Naturally, the Guardian wasn’t pleased with Trump’s words, with the newspaper’s US editor saying Trump’s remarks run “the risk of inviting other assaults on journalists both here and across the world.” CNN’s Jim Acosta, a relentless Trump opponent, was disturbed, and found the crowd’s enthusiasm highly triggering.

Acosta clearly had a bad night, telling a former White House official to “f*ck off” later on, after some mild trolling on Twitter. Other media types reacted similarly negatively:

As well as a skilled wrestler of reporters, Gianforte is a wealthy software entrepreneur, and has made an estimated $ 315 million from the sale of two of his tech companies. He is a staunch conservative, and a passionate creationist, who once donated $ 290,000 to the Glendive Dinosaur & Fossil Museum, which teaches that the world is around 5,000 years old, and dinosaurs and humans once lived side by side.

Gianforte is currently polling nine points ahead of Democratic challenger Kathleen Williams, in a state that has voted Republican in every presidential election since 1996, and elected Trump by a 20 point margin in 2016.

Trump had barely taken off from Montana on Thursday, before Williams’ campaign team released a video featuring audio recording of Gianforte’s attack on Jacobs. Accusing him of “assault and lies,” Williams’ video states “this is not who we are” as Montanans.

Voters in the Big Sky State will decide that for themselves on November 6.

US President Donald Trump said the results of the latest meeting between Kim Jong-un and Moon Jae-in in Pyongyang and their joint declaration were “very exciting.”

Trump in particular praised the North Korean leader’s willingness to allow international monitors to witness the dismantling of the nation’s missile and rocket engine test site. “Kim Jong Un has agreed to allow Nuclear inspections, subject to final negotiations, and to permanently dismantle a test site and launch pad in the presence of international experts,” Trump tweeted.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has thrown his support behind the US decision to pull funding from the UN’s Palestinian refugee agency (UNRWA), accusing the aid group of inflating the number of refugees it assists.

Speaking at Yad Binyamin on Sunday, Netanyahu said UNRWA is “perpetuating” the plight of refugees and that by pulling funding, the US is “finally beginning to solve the problem.”

“It is a very important thing,” Netanyahu said. “We have to cancel the refugee institution, we have to take the money and really help to rehabilitate the refugees, whose real number is only a tiny fraction of the number reported by UNRWA.”

The US government announced on Friday that it deemed UNWRA to be “irredeemably flawed,” and would therefore withdraw all financial backing for the refugee group. In 2016, the US contributed US$ 355 million to UNWRA. Earlier this year, it released $ 60 million of its allocated funding for 2018, prior to announcing the cuts.

Other governments have responded to the US decision with disapproval, with the European Union calling it “regrettable.”

“The regrettable decision of the US to no longer be part of this international and multilateral effort leaves a substantial gap and we hope that the US can reconsider their decision,” the EU wrote in a statement on Saturday. 

Ireland’s deputy prime minister, Simon Coveney, didn’t mince words when responding to the US move, calling Washington’s decision “heartless and dangerous.”

Germany also responded to the move, with Foreign Minister Heiko Maas saying it is “currently preparing to provide an additional amount of significant funds” to UNRWA, as losing the agency could “unleash an uncontrollable chain reaction.”

Jordan’s government also chimed in, with Foreign Minister Ayman al-Safadi saying his country will rally for support of the agency. “Disruption of UNRWA services will have extremely dangerous humanitarian, political and security implications for refugees and for the whole region,” he told Reuters.

Some people took to Twitter to denounce Netanyahu’s declaration of US support, with many accusing the Israeli prime minister of being part of the problem. One user said the “consequences of [pulling UNWRA funding] will be devastating,” while another suggested that the canceled funds were the work of “monstrous policies.”

Justin Gaethje emphatically ended a two-fight losing streak at UFC Lincoln on Saturday, as the UFC lightweight contender scored a stunning one-punch knockout of rival James Vick in the main event.

Gaethje needed just under 90 seconds to dispatch Vick, a fighter who came into the bout on a 9-1 UFC record. Known as one of the division’s hardest hitters, Gaethje connected with a left hook just before a vicious right hand evaded Vick’s defenses and sent him sprawling face first to the canvas.

Vick was in visible discomfort after the bout as he came to following the knockout. At one point it appeared that he attempted to perform a takedown on Gaethje after the fight as the victor approached Vick to offer commiserations.

Gaethje’s win moves his career record to 19-2 and resurrects his status as a top contender in the UFC’s lightweight division. Vick, meanwhile, falls to 13-2.

Elsewhere on the card, Michael Johnson won a close split decision against Andre Fili and Mickey Gall got back to winning ways, scoring a rear naked choke win against George Sullivan.
