British workers’ union the GMB has laid into Amazon’s working practices at Christmas with a satirical online game resembling “whack-a-mole.”
The game asks players to click on packages as they pop up, which gradually become impossibly fast to keep up with. You can play “Workers not Robots” yourself by clicking here.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Former Epic Games developer and director Cliff “CliffyB” Bleszinski took public shots at his former employer on Friday in what appears to be a hiring dispute.
“Hey @epicgames, could you please stop trying to hire away my team?” Bleszinski, who currently runs a studio called Boss Key Productions, wrote on Twitter on Friday afternoon. “We just launched @Radical_Heights on #UE4 and are really happy with how it’s going.” The tweet included a GIF of the phrase “not cool.”
Bleszinski followed this up with an insinuation that this alleged employee poaching has to do with his studio’s new “X-Treme Early Access” game Radical Heights, which bears a striking resemblance to Epic’s hugely popular Fortnite Battle Royale. “There’s room at this genre for more than a few games SMH [shaking my head],” he wrote in one Tweet, while in another, he added, “We have plenty of ways to make [Radical Heights] our own but they may never see the light of day if [Epic] keeps doing this.”

GUEST:
Hey Alexa, play some music.
Ok, Google, turn on the lights.
Five years ago, these commands would have made no sense. But for the past two and a half years, voice-enabled speakers have steadily gained traction, introducing the world to voice-activated technologies. As we approach 2018, there’s no sign of slowing down the smart speaker revolution.
For as much as we use our smartwatches, phones, tablets, and laptops, we will soon begin using smart speakers with the same frequency. Already, more than 35 million Americans use a smart speaker at least once a month, and the global market for smart speakers is expected to grow to $ 2 billion by 2020, according to Gartner. Consumers expect brands to be a part of this revolution. To win on the customer battlefield in 2018 and beyond, brands must incorporate voice into their comprehensive digital strategies, and they must do it now.
You’d be mistaken to believe that voice-enabled technology will solely be for consumer device companies. In today’s world, every company is a digital company. Think of your bank, car, or local retailer. Nearly all traditional brick and mortar companies now have a digital presence — after all, as the saying goes, “there’s an app for that.” Web and mobile revolutions paved the way for digital transformations, and you can rest assured that smart speakers will be the next technology every major brand will need to leverage in order to reach their consumers.
In fact, new research reveals consumers want to interact with brands in ways that are relevant to them and that leverage the unique opportunities of smart speaker platforms. Consumers are ready, but the technology is lagging behind. More than 70 percent of those surveyed experienced problems or frustrations with smart speakers, and 25 percent felt as though the speakers were not designed with their needs in mind. So what does this tell us about the ways in which we create voice-enabled experiences? And more importantly, for whom?
When our researchers asked about third-party integrations such as Amazon’s skills and Google’s actions, they found a staggering 63 percent reported problems and frustrations, often claiming the integration was too difficult to set up, or worse, did not understand them. With new technology comes a learning curve, but it’s only a matter of time before users turn to rightly blaming the developers for continued mishaps. Even more concerning, we learned that brands have one chance to nail their voice experiences — consumers told us they would not revisit a skill or action with which they had a bad first-time experience.
It’s a disheartening experience to feel unheard, but right now we are on the cusp of enriching the lives of millions through voice-enabled technology. Speech is the most natural interface of all, and tapping into these new technologies can open up a realm of possibilities allowing for untethered interaction. So, how can you deliver an exceptional voice experience in 2018? Start with these 5 best practices.
Just as in retail, the customer is always right. It’s never in your best interest to suggest that the user is at fault, so when interactions go awry, design for ways to be helpful, humble, and human. This includes being specific about what went wrong and asking clarifying questions to arrive at how the user can help resolve the issue. It also means knowing when to take a step back. If there is an error loop occurring, offer an apology and relieve the user from frustration and stress by pointing them in the direction of a website or mobile app that may help solve the problem.
A seamless experience is one that is inclusive and anticipates the needs of its users. Putting in the user research work early during the development cycle is key; by listening and learning from users early in the design process, the technology will better know how to respond to a variety of situations.
When you greet your dinner guests, do you immediately run through the night’s schedule and menu? No. And neither should your smart speaker. By and large, users just want to do what they came to do, which means skill developers should ensure they feel comfortable and set expectations at every decision point. This includes letting them know what they can do or say at decision points. In multi-step processes, letting users know where they are in the process is extremely helpful. Users should have no more, and certainly no less, information than they need at any given time.
Voice technology should follow as natural a flow as possible. This means paying close attention to where the user may be — i.e. physically or in process of a task — and adjusting accordingly. Look for ways to combine, simplify, or remove tasks and constantly review commands, responses, and confirmations to ensure consistency. Communication should be natural and users shouldn’t have to learn a new language to communicate with the speaker or application.
Confirmations and acknowledgments come in a variety of forms, and brands should design them with context in mind. It is extremely important to design speakers and applications to understand when they need to give explicit confirmation — “Did I hear you correctly?” as opposed to a simple “OK” acknowledgment. Similarly, the absence of nonverbal communication does not need to be a limitation: Using light and sounds can be helpful indicators for when tasks have been completed, or when the device is powering on/off.
Brands must incorporate voice into their digital strategies in 2018 in order to maximize and grow the engagement with their audiences. The easiest way to accomplish this is through empathy. When brands listen and learn, they design with the user in mind, allowing the technology to achieve great experiences that all brands will need to be successful in the coming smart speaker revolution.

The office of the Maryland attorney general is investigating the management practices at the many large apartment complexes in the state that are owned and overseen by Kushner Companies, the family company of President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and top adviser, Jared Kushner.
A spokesman for Kushner Companies confirmed that the office of Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh, a Democrat elected in 2014, has been in contact with the New York-based company.
“We have been working with the Maryland Attorney General’s Office to provide information in response to its request,” the company said in a statement issued by the spokesman. The statement concluded: “We are in compliance with all state and local laws.”
A spokeswoman for the attorney general, Christine Tobar, declined to discuss the matter. “We don’t confirm or deny investigations,” she said.
The suit follows a May 23 article jointly published by ProPublica and The New York Times Magazine that detailed the Kushner Companies’ highly litigious dealings with the people who rent apartments in the 15 complexes it owns in the Baltimore area. The company, which shares ownership in some of the complexes with other partners but runs them all through its Westminster Management subsidiary, has brought hundreds of cases against current and former tenants in local courts.
AP Photo/Patrick SemanskySome of the cases involved tenants who possessed clear evidence that they did not owe the money the company claimed, yet were pursued anyway for several years, with late fees and court fees piling on top of the original claims. The article also described shoddy conditions that many tenants contend with at the complexes, including mice, leaky roofs and mold.
In response to questions for the May 23 article, the Kushner Companies’ chief financial officer said that its approach when it came to pursuing tenants conformed with industry practices and that it had a fiduciary duty to its ownership partners to collect all money owed by current and former tenants.
Jared Kushner, who was instrumental in the purchases, stepped down as the company’s CEO when his father-in-law won the presidency. Kushner has become one of Trump’s most senior advisers in the White House.
A subsequent report by The Baltimore Sun in August found Kushner Companies went to even greater lengths in some cases: Since 2013, corporate entities affiliated with the company sought the civil arrest of 105 former tenants at the company’s 17 Maryland complexes (it also owns two in the Washington suburbs) for failing to appear in court to face allegations of unpaid rent. Twenty former tenants were briefly detained, the Sun reported.
The Maryland attorney general’s investigation, which was first reported by CNN Money, is not the first fallout from the revelations about the complexes.
Last month, lawyers from two Baltimore-area law firms and a legal advocacy center filed a class-action lawsuit against Kushner Companies on behalf of tenants at the complexes. The lawsuit alleges that Westminster Management and related corporate entities have been improperly inflating payments owed by tenants by charging them late fees that are often unfounded and court fees that are not actually approved by any court.
This, the lawsuit charges, sets in motion a vicious cycle in which tenants’ rent payments are partly assessed toward the fees instead of the actual rent owed, thus deeming the tenant once again “late” on his or her rent payment, leading to yet more late fees and court fees.

Making matters worse, the 5 percent late fees are frequently assessed on principal that includes allegedly unpaid fees, not just the rent itself. The net effect, the suit alleges, is that the company’s late fees are exceeding Maryland’s statutory limits. Tenants are pressured to pay the snowballing bills with immediate threat of eviction, the suit alleges.
A spokesman for Kushner Companies declined to comment on the lawsuit when it was filed. “We will respond to the complaint at the appropriate time in the legal proceedings,” he said.
The original news reports on the complexes also prompted Maryland’s two U.S. senators and four of its House members, all Democrats, to send a letter to Kushner Companies in August asking for some of the firm’s records. The lawmakers noted that the complexes rely heavily on tenants with Housing Choice (Section 8) rental vouchers, and thus must comply with a host of Department of Housing and Urban Development regulations.
The lawmakers demanded, among other things, all notifications from HUD, public housing authorities, inspection companies or local jurisdictions identifying defects in the complexes in the past three years; all complaints from residents about maintenance and repair issues over the past three years; and information regarding the role played by Jared Kushner.
The company has not produced the records requested by the lawmakers, which led one of them, Rep. Elijah Cummings, the top Democrat on the House Government Oversight and Reform Committee, to seek assistance two weeks ago from the committee chairman, Republican Trey Gowdy of South Carolina.

GUEST:
Bots are breaking into the most human industry on earth: healthcare. Just look at Microsoft — it recently launched a new division to address the healthcare-AI intersection.
That’s not to say AI will be replacing doctors anytime soon, but the integration of AI into regular healthcare tasks is upon us. From surgical assistance to patient education to imaging analysis, robots are already part of the process — and their roles will only increase over time.
Of course, not everything is smooth sailing — AI faces challenges in healthcare just as it does in other fields.
Medical providers often lack the sheer volume of information necessary to train an AI tool; when the data does exist, it’s usually behind silos. For AI to make greater strides in healthcare, the industry needs to create common data exchange standards. Tangentially related is privacy: When large batches of data move between these silos, ensuring security becomes challenging.
Healthcare providers take their responsibility for patients’ safety seriously, which means technologies take a while to gain acceptance. Even when the data supports AI, bots still face an uphill battle to win over an industry where the stakes are literally life and death.
As technology improves and regulations adapt, AI will overcome these challenges, but that process takes time. Innovation in healthcare cannot be stopped; it’s only kept for observation until it’s stable.
If you’re a developer eager to make your mark on the medical world, heed the following best practices:
If you want to gain approval from the healthcare industry quickly, create technology to automate redundant, low-cognition medical tasks. Those small tasks add up — many doctors spend a whopping 49.2 percent of their time on menial tasks like paperwork instead of focusing on patients. Any tool that reduces that grunt work will be valuable.
For instance, create tools that let AI take over quick interactions between medications or recommend specific tests based on doctor-discovered symptoms, reducing human error. Consider customized patient follow-ups — a task absolutely within AI’s power — to reduce the administrative load on doctors, freeing them to pursue tasks that require their specialized skills.
This concept is already popular in farming. Blue River Technology uses cameras on crop sprayers to identify plants, killing weeds and fertilizing crops. Farmers can customize their sprayers to save on chemicals and time. Medical technology should aim to do the same for doctors — eliminate simple tasks to let them focus on more pressing matters.
It’s easy to get so wrapped up in creating a new technology that you gloss over the extra work it will require. Remember, healthcare providers don’t rush to change, so you’ve got to make your tool even more appealing and user-friendly than you would for any other audience.
For example, getting patients to adhere to their discharge plans can be difficult. A chatbot can help them stay on schedule, but if that chatbot begs for daily updates, it’s just creating more work for doctors. A better system would only flag the provider when the patient failed to refill a medication or missed a critical appointment. It’s these kinds of situations you need to consider, taking time to analyze every user touchpoint and whether it’s a relief or just a chore.
As a parallel example, look to the legal industry: Kira Systems is a lawyer’s AI assistant specializing in contract review. The beauty of Kira is its simplicity — it doesn’t require lawyers to waste hours feeding it information. Kira simply checks databases faster than any human could and presents its findings for review, saving time without adding new steps. Similarly, to satisfy medical providers, reduce their workload instead of replacing it with a higher-tech version.
Bottom line: When workflows go awry in any other industry, things get messy. But when that happens in healthcare, individuals’ lives are at risk. User-friendliness matters more here than in any other sector.
Technical challenges in healthcare are second to privacy. The most effective tool will be tossed aside if it can’t secure patient information at every turn.
To prepare an AI for the medical field, you need a staff with the right expertise: a high-level security officer who understands the risks; an attorney who is familiar with the laws in patient privacy and security; and a team of developers and engineers committed to keeping technology updated and hack-proof. That means patching software regularly, establishing clear lines of ownership, encrypting everything, and educating staff on security.
It sounds like a lot of overhead work, but in healthcare, security is king over all other concerns, and again, it’s individuals’ most personal information you’re dealing with. Satisfy those concerns, and your new tool will be one step closer to adoption.
The AI revolution is coming to healthcare. If you want to get involved, now is the time. Consider these tips before you dive in — you’ll be much more equipped to confidently develop something useful for medical providers.

As the trend of backyard flock tending skyrocketed in recent years, so has deadly infections, the Associated Press reports.
Since 2015, the number of Salmonella infections from contact with backyard poultry has quadrupled across the nation. This year, nearly every state has been pecked by outbreak strains; only Alaska and Delaware can crow about dodging them. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed 1,120 cases. Nearly 250 of those involved hospitalization, and one person died.
But that is likely just scratching the surface of the real numbers, according to CDC veterinarian Megin Nichols. “For one Salmonella case we know of in an outbreak, there are up to 30 others that we don’t know about,” she told the AP.

The CFL is eliminating full-contact padded practices during the season and extending its schedule to 21 weeks to help reduce the risk of injury.
The league and CFL Players Association made the joint announcement Wednesday.
The change is effective immediately. Teams were previously allowed to hold a total of 17 padded practices following training camp.
In the NFL, clubs can have 11 padded practices over the first 11 weeks of the season, a maximum of one per week. After that, clubs can have three more padded practices for a total of 14 on the year.
Starting next year, the CFL regular season will be extended one week to 21, giving players more rest time between games.
As a result, each CFL team will have three bye weeks instead of two.
