Good Morning Britain wasn’t on television screens for long this morning because of the Rugby World Cup coverage, but during the two hours it did air, presenter Piers Morgan caused a storm when he got into an extremely heated debate with the Extinction Rebellion founder over the climate change protests which are currently dominating the streets of London.

Members of Extinction Rebellion, an environmental pressure group with the aim of using civil disobedience to compel government action on climate change, were shown on a live video interview with two protestors who had been on the streets of the capital city since 6am this morning.

Piers and Susanna they were joined by Skeena Rathor, a Labour district councillor and member of Extinction Rebellion as well as former Metropolitan police Chief Mike Neville in the studio. 

Piers was keen to ascertain whether or not Skeena “practiced what she preached“ and if protestors should focus on reducing their own carbon footprint in order to make a bigger impact, instead of blocking streets, causing widespread disruption and taking up police resources. 

But it quickly became apparent to those watching at home how Skeena had made a u-turn in regards to her own opinion and Piers was quick to brand her a “hypocrite”. 

After showing the guests a series of videos and images of protestors dancing in the street, and queuing up to order food in McDonalds, Piers remarked: “I don’t hear any protests.”

Skeena argued how there were over 600 arrests within the first two days of the event, despite claiming it to be a “mass peaceful non-violent protest”. 

“Why are you [protestors] wasting police resources? Why provoke the Metropolitan police who are already under so much pressure?” Susanna asked. 

“The government are not listening,” Skeena said. “The public need to be told the truth. We want to disrupt business as usual.”  

Piers then turned to Skeena and said: “How did you get here this morning?” 

“Your [GMB] car picked me up,” she commented and then he turned his attention to finding out whether she engaged in as many eco-friendly practices as she encouraged others to do. 

“Ok, in a car. Have you got a TV at home?” Piers continued and Skeena asked: “Can you tell me the point you’re trying to make Piers?”

“Answer my question! Do you have a TV at home?” The presenter said, but Skeena diverted: “Again Piers we’re not talking about the real issue. I don’t think that’s relevant.” 

“With respect, answer my question, do you have a TV at home? Do your kids use iPads and computers? Yes or no? Can you answer these questions? Do you walk your kids to school?” Piers grilled. 

After strumbling over a few words, Skeena said: “It’s not relevant to the planet emergency.” 

“Do you see the problem with all this? You go on about ‘My kids can’t get out of bed because they’re all so terrified,’ I’m not surprised they’re terrified because your mum’s telling them everyday the planet’s about to end, and yet, I bet your own carbon footprint, for all the stuff I’ve just mentioned is terrible,” Piers added. 

“So why don’t you give up your computers, give up your television, give up your air conditioning, walk your kids to school, get a bike to the studio. Why don’t you practice what you preach!” The presenter raged. 

“It’s not about individual carbon footprint,” Skeena remarked.

“You bang on about it, but you do not practice what you preach! Hypocritical lies! Start with your own carbon footprint, but you do one thing and say another,” Piers hit back. 

But Skeena defended: “It’s about a system wide issue, the government telling the truth.” 

“Prince Harry said everyone’s footprint counts, is he wrong?” Piers introduced into the debate. 

When Skeena finally said no to his question, Piers exploded with confusion: “You just said it [personal carbon footprint] doesn’t count in terms of solving the issue? You literally just said the opposite!” 

Skeena tried to explain the u-turn she just made, but Piers was having none of it. “Try answering one serious question. 

“It’s my show, with Susanna and Charlotte. Can you please stop talking? You’re not answering a single question! Does your personal carbon footprint matter or not?”

No matter how many times Piers raged at the guest with the same question, she refused to answer. 

“You won’t answer my question!” The journalist remarked. “Answer the question! You just said everyone’s footprint doesn’t count. Unbelievable. I’m really frustrated.” 

“When Prince Harry said every footprint counts -“ Piers referred back to his original point but was cut off when Skeena said: “Everything we do does matter!” 

“Total waste of time!” Piers hit back. “You are guzzling and burning up the atmosphere. Rank hypocrite, that’s why you won’t answer the question.” 

“How many times do I have to ask a simple question,” he added. 

After several attempts, Mike finally got to have a word and said: “Hundreds of police officers are sitting around waiting, they are sat in Central London unable to fight crime, investigate burglaries and knife crime.”

After the debate finished the breakfast show went to an advertisement break, and when it returned, Piers added: “I would respect you [Skeena] more if you just admitted it.” 

Those watching at home were divided over the behaviour shown by Piers and the intense grilling he gave the guest. 

Nevertheless, it sparked great conversation online. One tweet said: “@piersmorgan on fire this morning on @GMB! These protestors do need to practice what they preach! If every single persons ‘carbon footprint’ is important then DON’T do the things you are protesting about! #gmb.” 

A second remarked: “@piersmorgan ripping into #ExtinctionRebellion founder this morning and quite right so, such a hypocrite, causing chaos, wasting police rehouses yet her own carbon footprint is no different to anyone else’s #GMB #Hypocrite.”

Someone else said: “These eco worries worries believe that they can take a couple of weeks off work to disrupt ordinary people who need to go to work. Well done @piersmorgan challenging well #GMB.” 

While others were less convinced about Piers’ approach to interviewing. 

“How can @piersmoran get away with speaking to people like that #gmb,” one commented. 

Another added: “You’re asking questions that are not relevant to her protest Piers, you’re trying to make her cause seem daft #gmb.” 

“#GMB learnt absolutely nothing about her protest… let her speak,” someone else remarked. 

A fourth said: “#GMB @piersmorgan shocking journalist once again. Let’s berate a woman into answering a non relevant question in order to try and undermine her wider point. So if nobody’s perfect let’s do nothing?” 

Today is the third day the Extinction Rebellion demonstrations take place in London. 

Nearly 600 people were arrested on the first two days of the group’s two-week protest, with activists attaching themselves to building and blocking roads.

  • Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett has long decried Wall Street’s habit of providing quarterly earnings guidance.
  • But last year, S&P 500 companies issued forward guidance at the highest rate since 2008, according to a report by S&P Global Market Intelligence.
  • Executives have made fewer forecasts this year amid more calls to do away with the practice.

Warren Buffett has long said that short-termism is bad for companies, but many didn’t seem to concur last year.

Companies on the S&P 500 issued quarterly earnings guidance 444 times in 2017, the most since 2008, according to a report by S&P Global Market Intelligence released on Thursday.

The deadline for publishing a more concrete version of the deal is August 31st, when the American administration plans to notify Congress of Mr Trump’s intent to sign. Ferrari teammate Kimi Raikkonen was second, ahead of Formula One championship leader Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes.

Vettel was 0.063 quicker than Raikkonen and 0.137 ahead of Hamilton, who won the last two races to take the championship lead and move 24 points in front of Vettel.

However, Ferrari has looked strong so far in Spa, topping all three practice runs — with Vettel quickest in P1 and Raikkonen best in P2.

It was a tough day for Australia’s Daniel Ricciardo, who suffered a mechanical issue in Practice 1.

Raikkonen gave Ferrari its last victory here in 2009. Mercedes has won for the past three years.

The P3 session was interrupted near the end after McLaren driver Stoffel Vandoorne span off after trying to overtake the Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas.

“What the hell was that Mercedes doing? He just pushed me onto the grass,” an irate Vandoorne said on team radio.

Fighting to keep his McLaren seat next year, Vandoorne was last in all three sessions.

However, it appeared Bottas was at fault for not giving Vandoorne room as he approached on his left.

“I didn’t see him,” Bottas told his team.

Following a review by race stewards, Bottas was deemed to be driving in a “potentially dangerous” manner and given a reprimand. He escaped a penalty because the incident was not considered to be intentional.

Governing body FIA said Bottas “conceded the incident was his fault” and that “he had not seen (Vandoorne) approaching, despite checking his mirrors and having heard a warning message from his team.”

A penalty would have effectively made little difference, anyway. Bottas, who finished fourth in P3, starts the race from the back of the grid after being penalised for too many engine-part changes.

“The day was alright,” Ricciardo said, who clocked one minute 05.031secs. “We changed a few things in the second practice. Somewhere in the middle, so we will go somewhere in the middle between P1 and P2 with aero and a few other bits and pieces.

“This morning, we may have been a little bit stronger than the afternoon. We changed a few things. We can find a happy medium between the two set-ups we tried.

“The tyres were all really close, so that is going to be interesting, what strategy people go for tomorrow.”

Hamilton who has a 14-point lead over Vettel after eight races, lapped the Red Bull Ring with a best of 1:04.579 in the late afternoon on the hardest tyre available.

He had also been quickest in the overcast opening session in 1:04.839. Finnish team mate Bottas was second in both, at 0.127 and 0.176 slower respectively.

Mercedes have brought aerodynamic improvements to Austria, after a new engine was introduced at the previous race in France which Hamilton won. The reigning champions have won every race at Spielberg since Austria returned to the calendar in 2014.

And Hamilton said: “The car feels better in certain areas around the track which is already a step forward from last week.

“The car felt immediately better coming out of the garage in FP1.” Bottas, winner in Austria last year from pole, also agreed that the updates were working well.

Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari filled the top six places on the timesheets in both sessions, with Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen sixth in both.

French driver Romain Grosjean — who has yet to score a point this season — was seventh in both on a promising day for the US-owned Haas team. Honda-powered Toro Rosso had Pierre Gasly inside the top 10 in both sessions, although he damaged the car’s suspension in the second stint.

Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas went second-fastest behind Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo in the first session earlier today, with team-mate Lewis Hamilton in fifth.

But Ferrari fought back in the second session at the Sakhir Grand Prix Circuit, with Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel clocking the two quickest laps.

Third-quickest Bottas was more than half a second slower than both Raikkonen and Vettel, with Hamilton further off the pace in fourth.

But Wolff has claimed Mercedes are unconcerned by Ferrari’s performance going into tomorrow’s final practice session and qualifying.

“Ferrari were in a pretty high power mode when they did the lap,” Wolff told Sky Sports. “So that isn’t too worrying but it is a good lap.

“What we have seen here and Melbourne is that at various stages the teams are very close together. I can’t really judge.

“We have GPS data so can follow every car and we can see on the straights [Ferrari] gain much more time and in the corners it is still the same.

“It’s become very transparent for the engineers to judge how much somebody has turned on the power, how much drag and how much downforce they have.”

Mercedes will be eager to qualify well tomorrow and take maximum points from Sunday’s race.

Lewis Hamilton and Bottas are currently second and eighth respectively in the World Drivers’ Championship standings.

Four-time F1 champion Vettel is on top at present, with Ferrari team-mate Raikkonen in third.

Hamilton or Vettel will go within two titles of former Ferrari driver Michael Schumacher if they end the season as F1 champion.
