Emily Blunt looked “practically perfect in every way” as she donned an elegant white dress with billowing sleeves for the world premiere of Mary Poppins Returns. The British actress, 35, paired the dreamy gown with chandelier earrings on the red carpet in Los Angeles. And to coin the title of a song in the 1964 original film, there was a Step [back] In Time as Dick Van Dyke, 92, who played “cockney” chimney sweep Bert, attended the gala. He looked dapper in a navy blue suit and bright aqua green tie and was joined at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre by wife Arlene Silver, 47 – 45 years his junior. Devil Wears Prada actress Ms Blunt steps into Julie Andrews’ shoes as the much-loved British nanny more than 50 years after she charmed audiences. Ms Andrews, 83, won a Best Actress Oscar for playing the mysterious visitor who flew in on an umbrella. The film will see Poppins return to London in the early 20th century to help the now adult Banks children. Also starring Ben Whishaw, 38, Emily Mortimer, 46, Meryl Streep, 69, and Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, 38, it features all the whimsical magic of the original, including a return of the animated dancing penguins. Ms Blunt, as Poppins, inset, said: “It really is a trip down nostalgia lane, paying homage to these incredible movies we grew up watching that are so representative of everything we remember as children. “Yet we are doing something new and I think it’s a film that’s just full of feeling and full of joy.” The director Rob Marshall, 58, said he became involved in the sequel because he felt the world needed some Poppins magic. “The world’s in a fragile place you know,” he said. “I feel it personally and I know that everyone on our film felt it, the entire cast.” Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns will be released in British cinemas on December 21.
Chris Hughes/Facebook
Chris Hughes, 34, has been spending a lot of time lately thinking about his life’s trajectory. And it’s led him to reconsider what it means to be successful.
Hughes had the good fortune of being Mark Zuckerberg’s roommate at Harvard, and he helped Zuckerberg build what became Facebook. Zuckerberg considered Hughes the most socially adept of the founding team, and he helped with the site’s user experience and worked with writers to get Facebook’s first press coverage.
Hughes decided that the site wasn’t going to be his life, and stepped away after three years. But those three years got him a 2% ownership in the company, and that stake ultimately brought him $500 million after Facebook went public in 2012.
“I made a lot of money at a young age, but I didn’t feel a connection to the work that I put in,” Hughes told us in a recent episode of Business Insider’s podcast “Success! How I Did It.”
“So success, I feel like, for me, is having an opportunity to work on what I want to work on, and hopefully having an impact on the world as part of the process,” he said.
Hughes first began to feel this in college, when he knew he wasn’t willing, as Zuckerberg was, to drop out and move to California to turn their dorm room project into a real company.
“I loved working at Facebook, but it wasn’t a religion for me in the same way it was for Mark,” he said. “And I think to be able to be in the trenches and have the resilience and the dedication — with any startup, really — you have to believe in the mission of it. Almost with a kind of religious zeal.”
In 2007, he joined a group that he could have that zeal for: the initially long-shot presidential campaign of freshman US senator Barack Obama. He was praised in the media for his successful work on building Obama’s online presence.
When he found himself several years later with what he called the “boatload” of Facebook money, he decided he’d try to turn around the struggling New Republic magazine and turn it from a niche liberal journal into a mainstream hit with millions of readers. After spending $25 million over four years and dealing with an outpouring of talent in response to changes he was making, he decided to sell it.
The experience taught him, he said, that he could no longer set “really unrealistic goals.” He needed to be driven by purpose, but it needed to be grounded in reality.
It’s why with his newest project, he feels he has a clear definition of success that can guide him. As outlined in his new book “Fair Shot,” he’s working through his nonprofit the Economic Security Project to advocate for a guaranteed basic income of $500 for working Americans making under $50,000. He’s already overseeing an experiment with it in Stockton, California.
“I have to stay focused on what I care about most,” Hughes told us. “That’s the work that I do on a day-to-day basis, and, of course, my family. And as long as I’m focused on the impact that I want to have through work, through my family, then I’ll be fine.”
]]>Mentally, I’m a very organized person, but I’ve never claimed the same for my physical surroundings. The various apartments I’ve lived in over the years would never win any compliments or prizes for cleanliness, and I can chalk this reality up to a couple of reasons: lack of time and, more often than not, pure laziness.
I know logically that a clean living environment contributes to happier, more productive inhabitants, but like many people, I just hate cleaning.
With so many rooms and appliances to clean, and a strong desire to do literally anything else with my time, I found a variety of tools and gadgets that will do most if not all the work for me. While a few of them may take some initial setup and getting used to, in the end they’ll cut down on time and labor, and you’ll definitely notice the difference.
iRobot
Earning our top pick for best robot vacuum, iRobot’s three-stage cleaning system cleans several floor types, navigates around objects, responds to voice commands with Alexa or Google Assistant, and runs for an hour of continuous cleaning. Its strong suction and effective spinning side brush along with its ability to be programmed and controlled from an app make it a worthy competitor to high-end bots.
Litter Robot
While cats are known to be more low-maintenance than dogs, you do still have to clean up after them. This futuristic litter box almost completely eliminates one of the more unpleasant tasks associated with being a cat owner by automatically separating the clean litter from the clumps and dropping the waste into a carbon-filtered drawer. It has a large entry for cats of all sizes and is ideal for multi-cat households.

Another gadget that makes cleaning up after your pets less of a hassle is this automatic potty for dogs under 25 pounds. Its adjustable timer automatically advances the highly absorbent pad once, twice, or three times a day, while the sensor ensures that the timer will never start while the dog is on the machine.

Honda’s Fit is aptly named: You can fit much more stuff inside it than in any other subcompact thanks to its boxy shape and multi-way folding rear seats. It also is a strong value, with class-competitive refinement and build quality and a $ 17,080 base price. The 2018 model adds active safety features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automated emergency braking as optional or standard equipment on every trim level, further distancing the Fit from its humble competitors. What the Fit doesn’t fit into its mix of capabilities is fun. Although you can get it with a manual gearbox, the Fit is at best pleasant to drive—which is a bit of a disappointment considering that the previous-generation model was more engaging while being equally practical. But if impressive interior space and versatility in a tiny package are what you’re looking for, the Fit is still a car we highly recommend. READ MORE ››

At least that’s what Sport journalist Carme Barcelo has claimed while appearing as a guest on Spanish show El Chiringuito TV.
Coutinho is Barcelona’s top January transfer target after they failed to convince Liverpool to sell him last summer.
And the Catalan giants are expected to launch a formal bid to prise him away from Anfield in the coming days.
Liverpool are thought to be more willing to sit down with Barcelona to discuss a deal for Coutinho than they were last August.
And their priority was to come to an agreement sorted for Naby Keita, which would postpone Coutinho’s departure until the summer.
Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu and chief executive Oscar Grau, as well as the player himself, have insisted a deal goes through this month though.
And Barcelo has reflected that urgency by suggesting Coutinho is on the verge of agreeing terms with the La Liga giants.
She has also revealed how much the playmaker will set them back.
“Coutinho’s [deal] is practically closed,” she said on El Chiringuito TV.
“[The transfer] operation may end up costing about €160m (£142m).”
Coutinho will become the second most expensive player behind Neymar if Barcelona stump up that fee for him.
He’ll lose that position to Kylian Mbappe in the summer though with Paris Saint-Germain poised to pay £160m for him.
Spanish outlet Don Balon say Barcelona are so confident of getting a deal over the line that they have a presentation date set.
Coutinho is tipped to formally complete his move on Monday, with an event to follow at the Nou Camp.
If the 25-year-old has any late doubts about the switch, his international team-mate Neymar will steer him towards Barcelona.
Don Balon claim the PSG talisman has constantly been messaging Coutinho to encourage him to head for Catalunya.

Considering our high regard for the first two generations of the Honda Fit—and how bummed we were that the third-gen car wasn’t as fun to drive—we were eager to sample this updated-for-2018 Sport model that slots in above the base LX and below the EX and EX-L trims. The Sport designation has us remembering fondly the appealing chassis dynamics that landed the first two generations of this pint-size hatchback on our 10Best Cars lists, a distinction that the post-2015 iteration has failed to achieve. Unfortunately, the Sport badge denotes what is essentially an appearance package encompassing aggressive-looking bumpers, orange accents, glossy black 16-inch wheels, a chrome exhaust tip, and sill extensions. If you find yourself rushed in the morning, the first thing that many of us put on the chopping block to save time is breakfast.
If it’s finding matching socks or flipping pancakes, you’re probably going to opt for the basic option of simply looking presentable.
If that’s the case, you might find yourself shelling out money at a bagel shop near work or skipping the meal altogether and splurging on lunch because you find that you’re horribly hungry by the time 1 p.m. rolls around.
But even more important than the financial advantages to making breakfast, it’s also an advantage to your work performance. A solid meal in the morning means you can operate at a higher level at work and spare more energy and attention on others; it probably makes you a more pleasant person to be around, too. Your first meal sets the tone for the rest of the day, so if you start out making good decisions for your body, mind, and wallet, then you’re less likely to ditch those guiding principles later in the day.
Even if you’re up before the sun, everyone’s time is valuable. If making breakfast can take you five minutes rather than 15, odds are that you want the former.
These 11 breakfast gadgets make having breakfast before work a faster, more efficient prospect, so you’re more likely to do it.

The Holstein Housewares double omelet maker will make you two omelets for less energy than it takes you to make one on your own.
If you’re cooking for two and the other person doesn’t want the exact same breakfast as you, you can easily make two different dishes at the same time. The indicator light will let you know when it’s on, preheated, and ready to cook.
It’s non-stick coated, so you won’t have a hard time cleaning either.

Whether you prefer your eggs hard or soft boiled, the Dash cooker makes cooking them easy. Once you’ve filled the base of the cooker with water — it comes with a measuring cup that tells you how much water you’ll need for every type of egg — you can place up to six eggs on the top tray.
Dash also includes two additional trays: one for poached eggs, and another for making omelettes.
Egg gadgets don’t normally galvanize a cult reaction in people, but this is one beloved kitchen tool.

Love bacon but hate how long it takes to make? This rack will cook bacon in minutes and also separate the meat from the fat. As the meat cooks, the fat will roll off and collect in the easy bottom tray, so you can transfer to a plate the bacon you want to eat in the condition that you want to eat it.
It should take a minute per slice and reduce fat up to 35%, which is a persuasive point for why it’s okay to eat bacon in the morning, after all.

]]>She’s (still) practically perfect in every way! Mary is coming back in Mary Poppins Returns and we have your exclusive first look at the sequel starring Emily Blunt.
The Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio is a unique sports sedan. While most of the exciting features are related to performance — 505 horsepower, 0-60 in 3.8 seconds, a top speed of 191 MPH — I’m more impressed by the tech features, which are normally found only in luxury cars like the BMW 7 or the Audi A8. They are preparing us for a day when cars are fully autonomous and connected to each other, yet still provide a manual hands-on-the-wheel driving experience when you want to get your heart racing.
At the Twin Cities Auto Show today, I managed to get a sneak peak at a car that will arrive in a few weeks for a full hands-on test.
One of the most interesting tech features for spirited driving has to do with adaptive cruise control. I’ve tested this automated feature many times in other cars, but on the Giulia, it could be a fantastic addition because of how it works at the full range of speed, around corners and even on the track.
As you drive, a sensor looks for the car in front of you. It matches the speed, so if you’re on the highway and the cars are all going 70 MPH, the Giulia will follow that speed. If there’s a stoplight up ahead, the car will slow all the way down to zero. You can then resume back up to full speed. In a performance car, it means you can focus on steering and lane-keeping. Of course, you can also disable adaptive cruise for a quick burst of speed and to pass other cars. For a commute, it’s a safer way to drive because, while you should stay vigilant at all times, if you do get distracted and cars start jamming up way in front of you, the Giulia will slow down automatically. In traffic, you can start and stop autonomously.
The Giulia also has fully autonomous emergency braking. If you don’t notice a danger, the car will brake down to a full stop for you.
What comes next? We hear a lot about small compacts that drive on their own. Soon, performance cars could even drive in a way that is more spirited and take corners the best way possible, braking perfectly and constantly watching for other cars. We’ll be able to maintain total control or use assistance features — similar to how a game like Forza works on an Xbox One.
