After years of chasing the dream of clean energy, Apple announced that it’s facilities are now 100 percent powered by renewable sources. That’s up from the 96 percent in 2016, according to its latest energy report. Apple claims the new milestone covers power usage in its stores, offices, data centers and co-located sites across 43 countries. As for manufacturing, it’s received commitments from 23 partners (including Pegatron and Quanta Computer) to build Apple products using renewable energy.

To be clear, though, Apple’s announcement doesn’t mean all of its facilities are directly connected to clean energy. Instead, in some cases the company is putting renewables back into the grid to offset the fossil fuels it uses up. That’s something Google is also doing for its offices and data centers. An Apple representative tells us that it also relies on renewable energy certificates (or RECs) for around 34 percent of its usage, while the rest is made up from its own green projects. RECs allow companies to make up for their carbon usage by buying renewable energy. Apple is working towards covering all of its energy needs with its own solutions, the rep says.

The company claims it currently has 25 renewable energy projects in operation around the world, generating 626 megawatts. There are also 15 more projects coming, which in total will give Apple 1.4 gigawatts of green energy production. They include the things you’d expect, like solar arrays and wind farms, as well as newer solutions like biogas fuel cells and micro-hydro systems. And don’t forget, the company’s new Cupertino “spaceship” campus is powered entirely by renewable energy.

“We’re committed to leaving the world better than we found it. After years of hard work we’re proud to have reached this significant milestone,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement. “We’re going to keep pushing the boundaries of what is possible with the materials in our products, the way we recycle them, our facilities and our work with suppliers to establish new creative and forward-looking sources of renewable energy because we know the future depends on it.”

Today, SpaceShipTwo completed its first powered test since the horrific crash in 2014 that killed one of its pilots. The craft, VSS Unity, took off from Mojave Air and Space Port aboard a plane called CMS Eve, and was piloted by two people. According to Richard Branson, the vehicle went supersonic, up to Mach 1.6. He proclaimed Virgin Galactic “back on track.”

It’s a great accomplishment for a company that has been taking it slow since the 2014 accident. Virgin Galactic performed numerous glide tests of SpaceShipTwo in order to ensure it was once again ready for a powered test, its fifth overall (but first since the fatal crash).

Following the investigation into what happened, The Spaceship Company (a Virgin Galactic subsidiary) made some changes to the design of SpaceShipTwo, according to CNBC. If all goes well with future powered tests, then Virgin Galactic could become one of the premier names in space tourism and launch providers.

Google has been toying with the idea of hyperlocal news for a while now. It tested Google Now cards back in 2013 that could display information as close as your neighborhood, for example. The company’s latest take, Bulletin, is in testing as an app to create and instantly publish those hyperlocal stories from your phone. Currently only in early access in Nashville and Oakland, Bulletin encourages local journalists and everyday folk to capture a video, take a snapshot and build a story around events wherever they happen.

Google confirmed the project to Slate on Friday. “This is very much in the testing phase and aimed at hyperlocal stories and events for people to share, and for local media to take advantage of,” a Google spokesperson explained to Slate. “People everywhere want to know what is going on in their own backyard at a very local level, ranging from local bookstore readings to high school sporting events to information about local street closures.”

It’s not hard to see a tool like Bulletin as a boon to local reporters and news outlets looking for stories closer to home. While fake news might may be a concern for Google overall, this project seems focused on events and happenings rather than hard news stories. Either way it pans out, putting power like this in the hands of the people just might make a lot of sense for regional communities looking to share what’s going on in their own neck of the woods.

It might not have the star power of Alexa or Google Assistant, but DuerOS, Chinese web giant Baidu’s AI platform, continues to pick up steam in its native country. It seems like Baidu is trying to curry favor with a more international audience, too — it’s here at CES to show off smart speakers that almost certainly won’t wind up in the United States. The most sensible of the models on display was a cutesy, fabric-covered Echo Show lookalike called the Little Fish VSI, which wins our Best of CES 2018 award for Cutest, Least Descriptive Product Name.

We’re being glib, but the Little Fish VS1 is actually quite a pleasure to play with. Naturally, DuerOS resisted all my attempts to talk to in English, but my colleague was able to check out the (depressing) weather in New York by asking in Mandarin. More importantly, a camera wedged into the bezel above the top of the screen is able to recognize individual users and tailor the way it responds to people. We haven’t used the VS1 long enough to get it to recognize us, but even if it did, most of us wouldn’t be able to understand it anyway. As you’d expect from what amounts to a Chinese Echo Show or Smart Display, though, the VS1 has deep ties to services like Baidu search (duh) and the iQiyi steaming video platform.

Normally, we might not spend so much time playing with a distinctly foreign smart speaker. The thing is, Baidu likes to hint that its AI ambitions won’t be limited to China. Baidu hasn’t cooked up a concrete plan to bring its DuerOS to the US, but when asked, a representative indicated it was a possibility. Comments made to Wired also point to a potential international push (though one that doesn’t involve the US). Localizing a voice assistant with roots in another language is no small feat, but Baidu isn’t necessarily shying away from the work — it just has other priorities right now.

China has successfully tested its first solar powered highway, opening the one-kilometer stretch of road to traffic ahead of plans to use it to recharge electric cars.

The solar road developed by the Qilu Transportation Development Group, was opened Thursday in Jinan, the capital city of China’s Shandong province – a year after the project was initially launched. The move has been hailed by the developers as “another major breakthrough in the field of photovoltaic pavements.”

The solar road is made up of an insulating layer on the bottom, photovoltaic panels in the middle, and transparent concrete on top.

The panels, covering 5,874 square meters, have a total installed capacity of about 800 kilowatts, according to the project developer.

Electricity produced by the test section will be used to power highway lights, sign boards, surveillance cameras, tunnel and toll gate facilities.

Surplus power will be supplied to the state grid,  Xu Chunfu, the group’s chairman told Xinhua.

In the future, it’s hoped the innovative panels will allow wireless charging for electric vehicles, melt snow and provide internet connection. The photovoltaic road section also features ports with access to information collecting devices.

The company described the project as the world’s first freeway photovoltaic road test section. Elsewhere, France opened its first solar road last year – the one kilometer long roadway reportedly cost more than €5 million to build.

Xu did not reveal the cost of the Jinan solar road but said it was half of similar projects in other countries. “With the development of solar power in China, the cost can be further reduced,” he said.

A minibus driver who tested the new road told CCTV that he felt nothing different driving on it. “I’m running at the speed of over 100 kilometers per hour. There’s nothing different from the ordinary highway. The braking distance is almost the same as well,” said the driver.

China is a world leader in solar power production. Earlier this year the National Energy Administration said Beijing had officially earned the title after it doubled its installed photovoltaic (PV) capacity in 2016.

A patent published today but filed in 2016 shows an Oculus concept for a convertible head-mounted display that can be powered by either a PC or phone.

The patent application 20170364144 from Oculus is listed as invented by Yury Anatolievic Petrov. It covers a head-mounted display said to receive “video input from a stationary computer in a first mode of operation and from a mobile computer in a second mode of operation, and to display images corresponding to the video input.”

Images in the patent application show a variety of potential arrangements including a phone snapped into place behind your head and connected to the head-mounted display with a wire.

The patent coming from Oculus shows an intriguing arrangement for display and processing of a virtual world. Magic Leap this week showed a head-mounted displaypowered by a processing unit you keep in your pocket. Current VR headsets are typically wired to a nearby PC or console or use a phone as the display. In 2017, the latter option is more accessible but limited in many ways. Oculus is developing a pair of standalones that keep everything in the headset needed to render, track movement and display a virtual world, but is there a benefit to this approach as well? Could a future phone plug into a headset and do more by turning off its display to power VR glasses? How would battery life work in a situation like that?

A patent is obviously not an indication of any future functionality, but it is a notable idea as the world’s biggest tech companies try to figure out how to build the greatest level of immersion into untethered VR and AR headsets.
