Dr Hilary Jones, 65, regularly appears on daytime television advising on everything from prostate cancer to how to get better sleep.

But with all the detergents, air-conditioning and central heating drying out our skin and making it more sensitive, teaching people how to protect it, including how to deal with clothes in the laundry, has become a regular practice.

Dr Hilary told Express.co.uk: “We use detergents, soaps, bubble baths a huge amount in our society, and what they all have in common is they tend to leach out the natural oils in the skin that keeps is supple and moist.

“We all need to wash, but using detergents that don’t irritate the skin so much is a good idea, particularly if you have sensitive skin.”

So what should you look for to indicate you have sensitive skin and need to switch to non-bio detergent?

Dr Hilary explained that as we get older, our skin tends to become more sensitive.

He said: “Our skin naturally becomes rougher to the touch, we start to develop little benign growths, skin tags, age spots on the back of the hands, and we have a tendency to bruise easier.

“Signs of sensitive skin include skin feeling less elastic, transparent, our skin seems more fragile, we tend to lose a bit of the fat under the skin, and we feel the cold more.

“One of the most common signs is feeling itchy all over.”

We might not be able to easily change the amount of elastic under the skin, but we can protect it from becoming dry and rough – particularly through the washing powder we use.

Dr Hilary said: “Biological washing powder uses enzymes to digest things that stain clothes. In turn this can have a digestion and irritant action on the skin.

“For this reason, using a non-bio powder as we get older makes good sense.”

The working GP adds that it’s very important people think about the clothes they wear, the washing up products they’re washing their clothes in and anything else they’re putting on their skin.

He said: “My niece is allergic to eggs, cow’s milk and nuts quite severely, but it definitely improved on non-bio washing powder.

“It may not work for everybody, but for many people just thinking about the kinds of things you’re putting on your skin can make a significant difference.”

To help spread the importance of what detergent you should use if you have sensitive skin, Dr Hilary has teamed up with Fairy Non-Bio.

Johnson & Johnson has been ordered to pay a total of $ 117 million to an American man who claims Johnson’s baby powder gave him cancer.

The company was this week told to pay an additional $ 80 million to Stephen Lanzo on top of previous winnings of $ 37 million.

Judges found that the 46-year-old’s mesothelioma cancer was caused by regular use of talcum powder.

Mesothelioma is a cancer that develops in the lining of several of the body’s organs. It mainly affects the lungs but can also affect the lining of the heart, tummy or testicles.

It is nearly always linked to asbestos exposure, with around 2,700 people diagnosed with the condition each year in the UK.

Most cases occur in people aged 60-80 and men are affected more commonly than women.

Mesothelioma is notoriously difficult to treat and at the time it’s diagnosed, it’s usually fatal. Symptoms include shortness of breath, pain in the chest or lower back, and excessive sweating.

Cancer Research UK notes that before the 1970s, talcum powder was often contaminated with asbestos fibres which are known to cause cancers when inhaled.

But since then, all home products containing talcum powder are legally obliged to be asbestos-free. 

Lanzo’s lawsuit claimed that Johnson & Johnson knew its products were contaminated with asbestos but did nothing to warn the public. 

The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified genital talcum powder use as a possible cancer-causing agent, but more research is required.

In 2016, a US study found a link between talc and ovarian cancer if the particles travel through the fallopian tubes to the ovaries.

Researchers studied more than 2,000 women with ovarian cancer and a similar-sized group of women who were free of disease. Overall, they found a 33 percent increase in the risk of ovarian cancer with genital talc use.

The NHS states that the study was too small to be conclusive, but does note that gynaecologists recommend using plain, unperfumed soaps to gently wash the area around the vagina, as opposed to talc or perfumed soaps, gels and antiseptics. 

“More research will undoubtedly follow, and results from studies will be more convincing. Until then, if women are concerned they could avoid using talc in this way.”

Symptoms of ovarian cancer include feeling bloated, getting full quickly after eating, needing to urinate more often than normal and unintentional weightless.

Johnson & Johnson is currently facing over 6,000 similar lawsuits relating to talcum powder. The majority of those relate to women and the link with ovarian cancer.

In 2017, the company was ordered to pay more than $ 110 million to an American woman who said she developed ovarian cancer after decades of using of its talc-based products for feminine hygiene.

The woman, Lois Slemp, claimed she developed cancer after four decades of using talc products including Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder and Shower to Shower Powder.

The verdict by jurors in New Brunswick, New Jersey, came in the second trial nationally to center on claims that J&J’s talc products contained asbestos as the company separately fights thousands of cases claiming they can also cause ovarian cancer.

A judge has thrown out a $ 417 million verdict against Johnson & Johnson, which came about when a jury sided with a terminally ill plaintiff who said that Johnson’s baby powder caused her ovarian cancer.

On Friday, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Maren Nelson granted (PDF) J&J’s motion for a new trial (PDF). The plaintiff, Eva Echeverria, won $ 70 million in compensatory damages and $ 347 million in punitive damages following a trial. Echeverria’s trial date was accelerated because of her poor medical condition, and she has since died.

More than 5,000 lawsuits have been filed against J&J alleging that baby powder, which contains talc, is linked to ovarian cancer. The lawsuits typically allege that J&J had a duty to warn consumers about the connection between cancer and baby powder. J&J has maintained that its product is safe and any warning would be misleading.

The video, which was originally posted on Facebook by Las Vegas-based stripper Kijuana Nige, features Foerster ingesting three lines of white powder with a rolled-up $ US20 note.

“What do you think, I’m crazy?” Foerster asks after snorting the second line.

He then says: “It’ll be a while before we can do this again. Because I know you have to keep that baby. But I think about you when I do it. I think about how much I miss you. How high we got together. How much fun it was.”

Then a smiling Foerster announces: “Last little bit, before I go to my meeting.”

The Dolphins organisation released an additional statement addressing Foerster’s resignation.

“We were made aware of the video late last night and have no tolerance for this behaviour,” the team said.

“After speaking with Chris this morning, he accepted full responsibility and we accepted his resignation effective immediately. Although Chris is no longer with the organisation, we will work with him to get the help he needs during this time.”

Foerster had served as the Dolphins offensive line coach since last season, following a one-year stint with the 49ers.

The Dolphins improved to 2-2 Sunday following their 16-10 victory over the Tennessee Titans.
