Overview of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant on August 29, 2022.

  • The European Union said that it is preemptively donating 5.5 million anti-radiation tablets to Ukraine.
  • Potassium iodide will help protect civilians if there's an accident from fighting at a nuclear plant.
  • Southern Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia has seen recent shelling, sparking international concern.

The European Union is sending 5.5 million anti-radiation tablets to Ukraine so it can protect civilians in the event of a serious accident at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which has been caught in the middle of ongoing fighting between Ukrainian and Russian forces.

Ukraine requested last week that the EU donate potassium iodide tablets as a "preventative safety measure," European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) said in a Tuesday statement. Doing so would provide civilians near the plant — which has seen increasing hostilities — with protection from potential radiation exposure.

A nuclear accident can lead to radioactive iodine being breathed into the lungs and then quickly absorbed by the thyroid gland, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Potassium iodide can block radioactive iodine from ending up in the gland.

When a person takes the potassium iodide tablets, the thyroid gland takes in the medicine and is not able to absorb any more radioactive iodine, the CDC said.

Five million of the tablets are coming from the EU's emergency reserves, ECHO said, while the other 500,00 are being donated by Austria.

Southern Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is the largest in Europe and has been occupied by Russian forces since early March. Since then, international watchdogs have voiced concern that unsafe behavior could trigger a major nuclear disaster.

In recent weeks, shelling around the plant has damaged the facility and disconnected it from the local power grid. Britain's Defense Ministry has said that the occupying Russian forces appear to be using the plant's protective status as a shield, leaving Ukraine reluctant to attack because it doesn't want to cause a disaster.

"No nuclear power plant should ever be used as a war theatre," EU Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič said in a statement. "It is unacceptable that civilian lives are put in danger. All military action around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant must stop immediately."

On Monday, the International Atomic Energy Agency's chief Rafael Mariano Grossi said a mission is traveling to the nuclear plant this week to inspect its safety, stability, and security.

Chicago P.D.’s LaRoyce Hawkins Talks Atwater’s Tragic Love Life — Is Burgess a Potential Romantic Interest? https://briefnews.eu/chicago-p-d-s-laroyce-hawkins-talks-atwaters-tragic-love-life-is-burgess-a-potential-romantic-interest/ https://briefnews.eu/chicago-p-d-s-laroyce-hawkins-talks-atwaters-tragic-love-life-is-burgess-a-potential-romantic-interest/#respond Thu, 18 Mar 2021 00:07:53 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/chicago-p-d-s-laroyce-hawkins-talks-atwaters-tragic-love-life-is-burgess-a-potential-romantic-interest/

RELATED STORIES

Kevin Atwater’s love life on Chicago P.D. has been tragic, to say the least. He’s only had one real romantic interest over the course of the NBC drama’s eight seasons so far, and that did not end well.

In the Season 6 episode “Black and Blue,” Atwater shared a brief romance with Laila (Milauna Jemai Jackson), a wholly likable woman with a criminal past. Their chemistry was off the charts, and it looked like the pair had the potential for a long-term relationship. However, things fell apart when Laila was charged with murder despite covering for Kevin when he was close to being caught while undercover. Though it was the District Attorney’s decision, Laila saw this as a huge betrayal and a failure on Kevin’s part to protect her. The episode ended with Laila verbally berating Atwater before heading off to jail, closing the book on their romance.

Atwater has remained single since then, only enjoying some light flirting with rookie cop Vanessa Rojas (Lisseth Chavez) before she exited the series at the end of last season. LaRoyce Hawkins, who plays Atwater, says the Intelligence detective has learned a lot from his past mistakes.

Chicago PD Season 6 Atwater Laila“I think Atwater would be guilty of not having certain love skills as highly developed as they should have been,” Hawkins tells TVLine. “I think about that episode [with Laila] all the time. I actually just watched it not that long ago [and wondered] what could Atwater have done differently to preserve that rhythm to keep her safer, or at least for her to feel more protected by him. By the end of the episode, she’s going off, and doesn’t even trust Atwater or respect Atwater as much as she does at the beginning because of how he handled things. He lost his brothers and sisters because of a job that he didn’t know how to stand up to, and perhaps he lost the only love of his life that we have reference of because of a job he didn’t know how to stand up to.”

Given the experience, Hawkins assures that Atwater will make a stronger romantic effort if the opportunity presents itself again. “I’m pretty sure the next time Atwater finds himself in a romance, he’s gonna do his best. But he’s also going to require a lot of patience and understanding because, you know, he might be a little jacked up,” he explains.

While we don’t know when Atwater’s next romance will come, you can probably rule out his best friend Burgess as a potential match.

“That would be unfortunate if that happened, because she’s the best friend that almost married his best friend. With Ruzek and Burgess being his best white friends, it’s hard to say that Atwater would find a way to infiltrate or intercept that love,” he adds. “But this is television, and anything can happen.”

The Grim Reaper is closing in on Killing Eve: AMC announced Tuesday that the acclaimed thriller’s upcoming fourth season will be its last. There is, however, an asterisk attached to the end date news.

The cabler says it is working with Killing Eve producer Sid Gentle Films Ltd. to “develop a number of potential spinoff ideas to extend the show’s iconic universe.”

Production on Killing Eve‘s eight-episode farewell season is set to begin in early summer. Continuing the series’ tradition of bringing in a new lead writer every season, Laura Neal (Sex Education, Secret Diary of a Call Girl) will oversee Season 4, following in the footsteps of creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Season 1), Emerald Fennell (Season 2) and Suzanne Heathcote (Season 3).

“Killing Eve has been one of my greatest experiences and I look forward to diving back into Eve’s remarkable mind soon,” star Sandra Oh said in a statement. “I’m so grateful for all cast and crew who have brought our story to life and to the fans who have joined us and will be back for our exciting and unpredictable fourth and final season.”

Jodie Comer, whose role as Oh’s onscreen foil earned her an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama series in 2019, added, “Killing Eve has been the most extraordinary journey and one that I will be forever grateful for. Thank you to all the fans who’ve supported us throughout and come along for the ride. Although all good things come to an end, it’s not over yet. We aim to make this one to remember!”

The Undoing: Nicole Kidman Addresses Big Little Lies Comparisons, Drops Fresh ‘Tidbit’ About Potential Season 3 https://briefnews.eu/the-undoing-nicole-kidman-addresses-big-little-lies-comparisons-drops-fresh-tidbit-about-potential-season-3/ https://briefnews.eu/the-undoing-nicole-kidman-addresses-big-little-lies-comparisons-drops-fresh-tidbit-about-potential-season-3/#respond Fri, 23 Oct 2020 13:00:53 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/the-undoing-nicole-kidman-addresses-big-little-lies-comparisons-drops-fresh-tidbit-about-potential-season-3/

The Undoing and Big Little Lies share a network (HBO), a writer (David E. Kelley), a star (Nicole Kidman) and a conceit (wealthy moms in crisis!). But that’s pretty much where the project’s similarities begin and end, maintain Kidman and her Undoing director Susanne Bier.

The fact that Bier has a “very different” visual style than Big Little Lies‘ respective Season 1 and 2 helmers, Jean-Marc Vallée and Andrea Arnold, allows The Undoing to stand on its own, Kidman tells TVLine, adding, “That’s the beauty of great filmmakers.”

Bier acknowledges that she had seen both seasons of Big Little Lies prior to taking on The Undoing. “I liked it a lot, but it’s definitely very different,” the Night Manager auteur maintains. “I think one of the reason why it gets compared a lot to [BLL] is that David E. Kelley writes [female characters] really well.”

Another parallel between the two dramas: Like The Undoing, Big Little Lies was initially conceived as a limited series. It would, of course, go on to a see a second season. And talk of a potential third season is picking up steam, especially with Kidman making the media rounds for The Undoing. The Oscar and Emmy winner recently divulged to Marie Claire Australia that Kelley and BLL author Liane Moriarty “have a really good idea for” a third season.”

Kidman tells TVLine that the pair shared “a tidbit” of that idea with her, but she’s reluctant to share it because “you never know what it will end up as.”

For her part, she’s game to head back to Monterey. “I would like there to be [a Season 3],” she enthuses. “There are so many great stories to tell and I am open to all the different horizons. I think it would take an enormous amount of commitment from all of us. We all love each other and want to work together. We’re deeply intertwined now. There’s this enormous pull from this desire to just be together.

“Whether that [camaraderie yields] a story that will be fascinating and complex and important, that’s a different thing,” she continues. “It would need to be a story that makes our jaws drop.”

The cast of CBS’ in-the-works CSI revival is coming into focus.

As reported in February, CBS is developing a short-run CSI revival that that would commemorate the 20th anniversary of the original series’ launch. Elementary vet Jason Tracey is shepherding the project. The follow-up would once again be set in Las Vegas and, if deals can be made, feature a number of original cast members — but which ones?

Sources confirm to TVLine that original stars William Petersen and Jorja Fox are in advanced talks to reprise their respective roles as Gil Grissom and Sara Sidle. Petersen and Fox would be surrounded by a new crop of CSI characters. An insider cautions that CBS, which declined to comment for this story, has yet to formally order the project.

Fueled by the phenomenal success of the mothership (in its heyday it averaged north of 25 million viewers), CBS went on to launch spinoffs CSI: Miami (starring David Caruso), CSI: NY (starring Gary Sinise) and CSI: Cyber (starring Patricia Arquette).

CSI‘s 15th and final full season averaged 8.3 million total viewers and a 1.3 demo rating (leading out of The Good Wife on Sunday nights), while a two-hour series-ending movie that followed that fall drew 12.2 mil and a 1.8.

Doom Patrol EP Breaks Down That Fiery Finale Cliffhanger, Including What Will Be Revealed in Potential Season 3 https://briefnews.eu/doom-patrol-ep-breaks-down-that-fiery-finale-cliffhanger-including-what-will-be-revealed-in-potential-season-3/ https://briefnews.eu/doom-patrol-ep-breaks-down-that-fiery-finale-cliffhanger-including-what-will-be-revealed-in-potential-season-3/#respond Fri, 07 Aug 2020 11:32:00 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/doom-patrol-ep-breaks-down-that-fiery-finale-cliffhanger-including-what-will-be-revealed-in-potential-season-3/

RELATED STORIES

Doom Patrol wrapped its second season on Thursday with a cliffhanger so intense, we almost screamed Robotman’s favorite four-letter word when the screen cut to black.

Let’s start with a quick recap: Setting aside their personal issues for a hot minute, Cliff, Rita, Vic, Larry and Miranda rushed to the carnival to stop Dorothy from releasing the Candlemaker. But rather than battling her imaginary friends, they found themselves facing off against their own; Cliff was torn to pieces by a foul-mouthed representation of Jesus, Rita engaged in a dance-off against a demonic version of the paper doll she once used for inspiration, and Vic was taunted by his old pal “Doctor Cowboy,” for letting a killer go free.

Meanwhile, Niles did everything he could to stop Dorothy from fighting the Candlemaker, but even she accepted that it was time to grow up and face her (literal) demons. After suiting — er, booting — up, Dorothy conjured a powerful weapon and was pulled into the flames, presumably where she and the Candlemaker will engage in their final battle. (Oh, did we mention that everyone else got encased in wax? Rough stuff.)

The finale also took us back to 1969 Wisconsin, where Miranda — working as a waitress — fell in love with a handsome musician named Johnny (Famous in Love‘s Carter Jenkins). She believed he genuinely helping her “move forward,” but all bets were off when he manipulated her into participating in an orgy. It was at this point that Jane took over, punching Johnny in the face and cussing out the orgy attendees. (All hail Jane.) We also learned that the being in the present-day Underground claiming to be Miranda… well, let’s just say names can be deceiving.

Below, executive producer Jeremy Carver looks back on Doom Patrol‘s sophomore season, including the finale that wasn’t technically supposed to a finale. (Damn you, coronavirus!)

TVLINE | The imagery this season was wild: rat babies, sex ghosts, you name it. Was there anything you were especially proud of bringing from script to screen?
Well, since you mentioned the sex ghosts, I’ll say that I was very happy with the way that went from script to screen. From Omar Madha’s direction down, it was an episode that had so many different layers to it. It got to the point where it could — and arguably did — go off the rails and get completely insane, but I was happy with the way it all tied together. In my opinion, it worked. What I like most about doing this show is that from conception on, our writers, crew and cast are taking a lot of risks. We often ask ourselves, “How are we going to pull this off?” And not just from a technical standpoint, but also from a story standpoint. We never want anything to be too absurd. Grounded absurdity is really what we’re going for, and the different ways we approach achieving that are always satisfying.

TVLINE | I do love that we still occasionally see the sex ghosts around the house.
What I call the tendrils of different things we introduce over the episodes are one of the most enjoyable things about the show. We can keep calling back to these things that we plant in the show. If we’re going to cut away to an empty house, why not have some sex ghosts necking in the background?

TVLINE | “Necking” is a tasteful way of putting it.
[Laughs] Yes.

Doom Patrol Recap FinaleTVLINE | This season also introduced us to Abigail Shapiro, someone I immediately cared about and was invested in. What do you feel she brought to the show?
What Abigail brought to the show was nothing less than extraordinary. From the moment she appeared on screen, she held her own and more against the already impressive roster of talent that we had. It was breathtaking to behold. She brings so much humanity to that character. For me, and I think a lot of people, it’s impossible to take your eyes off her. We were incredibly fortunate to have Abigail join us this season. We were trying very hard in Season 2 to find some distinction from Season 1, to take the same characters and look at them a different way. Abigail brought that freshness and perspective that we needed, alongside all of the other wonderful additions.

TVLINE | OK, let’s talk about the finale. I’m correct that there was supposed to be one more episode, were production not shut down by the pandemic?
Yes. We knew we were facing a potential shutdown [while working on Episode 9], so we were able to do a bit of a pivot and make sure that Episode 9 would be just as satisfying of a conclusion to the season as if we had moved on to Episode 10. There were probably a few more loose ends than there would have been if we’d gone all the way through Episode 10, but we were very happy with how we were able to structure it to give us a satisfying end to the season.

TVLINE | I mean, Dorothy heading into her final battle while everyone else is encased in wax is a pretty epic cliffhanger.
It was a fortuitous stroke of luck that we planned it that way. It worked out well.

TVLINE | What magic did you work to make this feel like a real finale?
We made some changes on the fly. Even in the last few days of production, there was a little bit of triage as we decided what we wanted to add to make things work. We did a little bit of work in post as well, but we were probably more fortunate than [many other shows affected] in that Episode 9 was intended to be a cliffhanger anyway.

TVLINE | Let’s “pretend” I’m a total idiot for a second. How would you describe Jane’s state when this episode ends?
[Laughs] I’m trying to remember the exact ending. I’ve been in COVID lockdown for so long. I would say that the Underground is in a state of crisis. You have the revelation that the person playing Miranda is actually not Miranda. We have some indication of who it is, but it’s not the entire story. And Jane herself is in the well, discovering these truths while still being underwater. State of crisis is an accurate way of describing Jane, the other personas and the underground.

TVLINE | Would Episode 10 have revealed who she really is?
I’ll say that you’ll get a better understanding of who that identity is as we move into a new season, should we be lucky enough to get a new season.

TVLINE | I think I speak for every fan when I say that we already wanted a third season, but now we need one.
Oh, we all do. No one likes to have unanswered questions. I think there’s enough there that people can go away with some satisfaction. There’s a little more we want to say about this, and should we get the opportunity, we’ll be saying it. I could play coy and say that what you see is what you get, but I’ll be honest with you and the fans. There’s a little more there to deal with, and we’d really love the opportunity to do it.

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Thursday’s The Bold Type finale. Proceed at your own risk!

Oh, Sutton Brady (Hunter?), you’re breaking our hearts. On Thursday’s The Bold Type Season 4 finale, the stylist ventured home for comfort, but instead found several bottles of booze in her alcoholic mother’s fridge. Then while drunkenly drowning her own sorrows, Sutton hooked up with her married high school sweetheart. But shockingly, showrunner Wendy Straker Hauser isn’t ruling out a reconciliation between Sutton and her estranged husband Richard in the following Q&A.

Elsewhere, Jane was not a fan of Kat’s flirtation with the “toxic” Eva. Kat eventually texted Eva that things between them were too complicated to continue. Jane also challenged Jacqueline’s decision to squash an inappropriate workplace story after it was revealed to have ties to a woman whom Jacqueline’s husband dated during their separation.

Below, Hauser talks about Sutton’s destructive ways and the status of her marriage, as well as Kat’s confusing feelings for Eva and Jane’s chemistry with her writer Scott.

TVLINE | I was kind of surprised that there were two more episodes that were supposed to come after this one, because this episode actually worked very well as an unexpected finale. Did you make any changes to it to help it better function as a season finale?
We did. We didn’t reshoot anything. We just sort of reordered a few things. It’s hard to get specific about it, but we did whatever we could just try to make a finale out of it and heighten certain situations. But it was a very jam-packed episode to begin with. Our journey was not finished. So we left it on a big bang, that’s for sure.

TVLINE | When I talked to Katie Stevens, she was raving about those final two episodes that you didn’t get to finish. What can you say about what was in store and how those episodes or storylines might be incorporated into a fifth season, if you get renewed?
For Katie, specifically, we had left off in Episode 15 [with] Scott [admitting] that he had feelings for her, and there was that complication of, “What do you do when you connect with someone you work with, genuinely, but you’re also in a position of authority?” and it’s a new job for her. So we were going to see that [play] out more. Her arc got cut short in that way. At the same time, she was gaining more traction with Scarlet, and Jacqueline letting her know that she’s the future of Scarlet. So those were interesting things that she was going to juggle. We’ll still explore those things.

It’s amazing when you have an opportunity to stop, especially in television, when production’s moving so fast. I love so much of [Episodes] 17 and 18, but at the same time, I’m really excited about some things that weren’t shot, because we have an opportunity to tell even better stories. We just had a breath to sort of look at some things. So while some things will remain, other things will change. But our characters were going to go through more twists and turns before they made their final decisions.

The Bold Type RecapTVLINE | To echo something Sutton was wondering, are she and Richard over? How permanent of a breakup was it when he left the apartment?
I feel that Richard and Sutton have much more to explore. They both need to explore themselves first, though. They’ve been such an amazing, supportive couple, and Richard has been very accommodating in the past. Sometimes, there were probably things that were unsaid that we didn’t even realize were unsaid, which is what [Episode] 15 is about. It’s just sort of bringing up things that we all didn’t realize that probably bothered each one of them a little bit, but weren’t a big deal. But then when you come to this very clear impasse, where one of them wants kids and one doesn’t, and there’s a reminder that there’s a 20-year age difference, there are some real big issues to work through, if this couple makes it. We love Sutton and Richard. They haven’t hit real, huge roadblocks before. I’m hopeful that they’ll get to know themselves better, and we’ll see. I certainly don’t think the door is closed forever. But we’ll all discuss it in Season 5, if we get one.

TVLINE | Were there plans to see him in the final two unfinished episodes?
There were not.

TVLINE | You speak very hopefully about Sutton and Richard, possibly, finding a way to work things out in the future. How might Sutton sleeping with her ex-boyfriend play into that?
The real answer is I’m not really sure. She has a real journey to go through right now, and we’re excited to focus on that, first and foremost, and then see how her journey and where she lands leads to what her future is, whether it’s with Richard or not with Richard. I feel like your early twenties are about these big milestones and these sort of triumphant moments and a lot of new scenarios, and it’s exciting and scary. And then in your late twenties, some of your childhood issues or hang-ups or struggles come into play, and that’s happening with Sutton. She has an interesting relationship with her mother. The thought of becoming a mother has brought up some issues for her. She’s incredibly career-focused and in a great place right now, and she’s had a very visceral reaction to discovering that she really doesn’t want children, and she’s sort of unpacking what that means for her. There are a lot of emotions for her around that.

Right now, she’s just being a 26-year-old girl who has lost the love of her life for right now, who had everything, and very quickly, things have changed after discovering some huge differences, and she’s processing. She does what a lot of people do when they’re lost: They go home. She wanted to return to her mom. She wanted to go home, and when she went home, she sought comfort in an ex-boyfriend who always looked at her as this amazing Sutton Brady, who he would be lucky to spend some time with. She allowed herself to just give in in that moment, because she was feeling a lot of pain and because there was some comfort in home.

TVLINE | Home is also a place that’s filled with a family history of alcoholism, and Sutton has been known to enjoy a drink for fun. But now she’s using it to drown her pain. How concerned should we be that she’s following in her mother’s footsteps at the end of this episode?
She’s going to be challenged. She’s going to be a little destructive before she gets back on her feet. She’s feeling some shame, and she’s feeling some confusion. She feels a lot of loss, and I also think she’s disappointed in her own mom… There’s this feeling of, “Am I my mother? Was my beautiful, amazing, perfect life a fantasy? Am I really not worthy?” So there’s a little bit of self-sabotage that can happen, and it’ll be interesting to explore, and I think her friends will be there for her no matter what and, hopefully, help her through the process.

The Bold TypeTVLINE | Moving on to Kat, how much of what Jane said to her is weighing on her decision not to pursue something romantic with Eva?
Kat is also processing her feelings. When we started breaking the story, we talked about Kat enjoying the debate. Eva and Kat butt heads. They challenge each other. They have a sort of spark that comes from being on opposite sides [of] the debate. They also have a respect for each other. But I also think Kat’s confused by that. Jane’s words do ring true. But more than Jane’s words, it’s been sort of an inner conflict for Kat, as well. She didn’t expect to call out Eva’s name with Marissa. She was caught up in the debating and the sparring on the podcast, and sort of conflated that in the moment. She feels conflicted about having some feelings of attraction with someone who has some differing views than her.

TVLINE | We have seen in the past that Kat does like a challenge, and she’s always very eager to take one on.
Yes, that’s true.

TVLINE | Is that part of the attraction with Eva? Like, “Can I conquer this difference of opinion?”
I think so. Had we had more episodes, we would have seen that certainly come to fruition more. Our hope was that we could bring both sides together, learning from each other, and also have Eva come to realize some areas where she may have been wrong or not thought something through quite the way that she does when she sees it through Kat’s eyes. It was a challenge for Kat, and had we had more time, we would have seen that challenge pay off.

The Bold Type RecapTVLINE | Jane has always kind of put Jacqueline on a pedestal, but with this episode, is it the beginning of Jane starting to see her mentor in a new light and challenging her more?
I think that Jacqueline is being honest with Jane and vulnerable with Jane, and Jane truly believes that the story comes first and is reminding Jacqueline of things that she’s taught her in the past. They’re a little bit more on equal footing, where they’re just both being honest with each other. I don’t think that Jane is looking at Jacqueline any less so for being concerned about how a story might affect her private life. She recognizes it, but also is challenging her to remember what she taught Jane to begin with: It’s about the story. And Jane is confident that that she has the story, and that it’s not going to come back and affect Jacqueline’s personal life. And even if it does, if they’re helping that woman, then they can handle it together.
