From the new introduction to ‘Something Wicked This Way Comes’
This is a story about two boys, two best friends, both thirteen years of age. They had to be thirteen. Something Wicked This Way Comesis a book where ill omen is a constant companion. Given the level of supernatural angst Ray Bradbury constantly stirs up in this novel, he probably considered making both characters six-hundred-and-sixty-six but finally rejected it as too restrictive during the action scenes. Everything here – numbers, surnames, even October – drips with dark significance…
The boys are in pre-choice flux. They each seem to wear one hat whilst half hankering for the other. What a time for them to bump into Tom Fury, an example of that ever-popular small business genre, the lightning-rod salesman. ‘Storm’s coming,’ Tom tells them. It’s a catch-all phrase that covers most impending-menace possibilities. These must, for Jim and Will, include adulthood, the battle of innocence and experience, the choosing of the hat. In one episode, Jim and Will set off on the classic childhood pastime of climbing for apples – the apple being, of course, forever associated with temptation and lost innocence. From the high branches of the tree they see a half-dressed couple in a bedroom; an uncurtained window provides a proscenium arch for the brightly lit scene, a sort of theatre of adulthood. Jim, of course, is transfixed by the image. Will also stares but silently wishes for the stage-lights to go out…

The carnival is coming. When you read Bradbury you realise you’ve always been a little bit unsettled by fairs and carnivals and circuses. It’s something to do with the garish folk-art façades, that weird genre of rictus-grin faces, angst-raddled ghouls and very approximate renditions of popular cartoon characters not, it transpires, as protected by international copyright laws as we non-carny types thought they were. We squeeze past the throbbing generators that growl like they might not have been safety-checked for a decade…
Bradbury, it seems, is something of a student of fear. It is, he suggests, much more complex than we might think. It is certainly not just one thing. I once lived in an apartment overlooking the Thames. Seeing so much of the old river made me realise how different it could be from day to day, from hour to hour. It swirled and settled, it grew darker, it sparkled, it seemed, sometimes, almost to stop flowing. It feels as if Bradbury, through his writings, has similarly studied fear on a daily basis, noting its ebbs and flows, recognising its surprising variety. Thirteen-year-old boys can be a strange mix of high energy and deep languor. Their fear, Bradbury shows us, is subject to similar peaks and troughs. Having been near-paralysed with foreboding for a sustained period, Will and Jim become ‘starchy with boredom and fatigued with sameness’ and consider giving themselves up to the carnival just for something to do. Will and his dad experience a similar fear, dappled with tiredness, when they sit up into the early hours, ‘one second their thoughts all brambled airedale, the next all silken slumbering cat’. Our fear, as readers, feeds on imminent arrival: ‘Storm’s coming’, ‘something wicked this way comes’. It’s fear induced less by events than by portent. It is a periphery fear, unfocused, slightly out of reach, but it drifts in on the twisted church music of the carnival’s steam organ and lingers till the very end. We are soon drawn into a world where a phrase like ‘beware the autumn people’ can somehow chill us to the bone. The core of this fear is, I think, its timelessness. The deep past, recognisable but unknowable, informs much of this book. The boys are young and vibrant individuals but we see them very gradually swamped by a dark, alternative tradition – a then that becomes their now – too deeply rooted to be supplanted by progress or fashion. They have, it seems, encountered a sort of underground stream of occult murmuring unaffected by the bright and bustling surface world.

For all the twists and turns of the narrative, the main reason I love this book is Bradbury’s prose. It is so rich, so ornate, so perfect for this macabre tale. I hope the short quotes embedded in this introduction give you a glimpse of the eerie poetry that suffuses the work. The style reminds me, somehow, of Jack Kerouac’s. It’s always on the verge of flight. They both, for example, explore the possibilities of prose raised up and reassembled by hyphenation. This can be a light touch, like Bradbury’s description of the character who yearns for a ‘lovely gliding ride-around summer’, or it can be more baroque, as when we meet the carnival dwarf, ‘his eyes like broken splinters of brown marble now bright-on-the-surface mad, now deeply mournfully forever-lost-and-gone-buried-away mad’. If I spend an hour reading this book, I notice, afterwards, the distinctive prose style informing my speech patterns, colouring my vocabulary, Bradbury-ing my sentence structure in some subtle way. Even my text messages become like fragments of ancient prophecy. More and more, they remain unanswered.
The truth is, generally speaking, I don’t see the point in telling, or reading, stories devoid of mystery and magic or intimations of magic, or future worlds or super powers. I need an alien, a dragon or an enigmatic lightning-rod salesman, bare minimum. If you want everyday life, go to the laundrette. I’ll stick with the carnival.

A Dasan Networks router similar to this one is under active exploit by the potent Satori botnet. (credit: Dasan Networks)
A fast-moving botnet that turns routers, cameras, and other types of Internet-connected devices into potent tools for theft and destruction has resurfaced again, this time by exploiting a critical vulnerability that gives attackers control over as many as 40,000 routers. Despite the high stakes, there’s no indication that the bug will be fixed anytime soon, if at all.
Satori, as the botnet has been dubbed, quickly made a name for itself in December, when it infected more than 100,000 routers in just 12 hours by exploiting critical vulnerabilities in two models, one made by Huawei and the other by RealTek. Last month, Satori operators released a new version that infected devices used to mine digital coins, a feat that allowed the attackers to mine as much as $ 3,000 worth of Etherium, based on prices the digital coin was commanding at the time.
In recent days, Satori has started infecting routers manufactured by Dasan Networks of South Korea. The number of daily infected routers is about 13,700, with about 82 percent of them located in Vietnam, a researcher from China-based Netlab 360 told Ars. Queries on the Shodan search index of Internet-connected devices show there are a total of more than 40,000 routers made by Dasan. The company has yet to respond to an advisory published in December that documented the code-execution vulnerability Satori is exploiting, making it possible that most or all of the devices will eventually become part of the botnet.

The mind is a powerful medicine. Given an ineffective treatment, patients can experience real health improvements by simply believing that the treatment works—the placebo effect. But this blissful delusion has a dark side: when a harmless placebo becomes effective, it becomes harmful, too, causing side-effects seen in actual therapies.
In a new study exploring this mysterious “nocebo effect,” researchers pinpoint regions of the brain that seem to be behind phantom injuries. They also assess factors—framing and price—that can increase the potency of the effect. These may be critical to designing and assessing clinical practices and trial results, they argue.
Specifically, researchers gave patients a sham anti-itch cream for eczema (atopic dermatitis) and told them it increases sensitivity to pain as a side effect—which is a side effect of real medicines, but the phony cream shouldn’t have any side effects. Nevertheless, patients not only reported more pain, but the amount of pain they reported depended on the cream’s price and packaging. The cream caused more pain in patients when they were told it had a hefty price tag and came in a brand-name-looking box, compared with when they thought it was a cheap cream that came in a generic-looking box. The researchers, led by neuroscientist Alexandra Tinnermann of University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, published the results recently in Science.

The potent opiate behind surging drug overdose deaths across the U.S. is now cropping up in the marijuana supply, according to officials in Ohio.
Hamilton County Coroner Dr. Lakshmi Sammarco confirmed Monday that fentanyl, a synthetic opiate roughly 30 to 50 times more powerful than heroin, has been found in marijuana.
The deadly chemical is often cut into heroin supplies to increase the potency and even put into knock-off painkillers. The Drug Enforcement Agency recently warned about fentanyl being increasingly cut into cocaine supplies, reports WLWT.
Sammarco did not specify how many cases she has seen involving fentanyl-laced marijuana and the Hamilton County Corners Office has not reported any deaths linked to the combination.
“We have seen fentanyl mixed with cocaine, we have also seen fentanyl mixed with marijuana,” Sammarco said during a joint press conference with Republican Sen. Rob Portman, according to WLWT. “Essentially, the message we’ve tried to get out there, is if you are using any form of street drugs, count on them having some form of synthetic opioid mixed in.”
There are no confirmed cases of fentanyl-laced marijuana deaths anywhere in the country, but law enforcement officials in Ohio, which is suffering from rampant opioid addiction, have issued recent warnings about the risk. Dave Frisone, director of the Lake County Narcotics Agency in Ohio said June 14 they have had several false alarms regarding laced heroin, but say they “are aware that there is a potential.”
“In regard to marijuana, I’m not familiar with that,” Melvin Patterson, a spokesman for the Drug Enforcement Administration, told Cincinnati.com Monday, regarding fentanyl and pot. “There could be.”
Thomson ReutersFentanyl is infiltrating drug supplies across the country because of how cheap the substance is compared to standard narcotics.
While a kilogram of heroin from a Mexican cartel will cost a domestic supplier roughly $ 64,000, they can order a kilogram of fentanyl through the mail from China for as little as $ 2,000.
It can also be used to create roughly 20 times more doses than heroin, providing dealers with huge profits.
Officials are particularly alarmed by the increasing presence of fentanyl in cocaine supplies. Police note that, unlike heroin, cocaine is more widely used as a social drug.
They fear that users are largely unaware of fentanyl being cut up with cocaine and say it will have deadly consequences. Less than half a teaspoon of pure fentanyl is enough to kill 10 people.
The New York Times recently culled through data from state health departments and county medical examiners and coroners, predicting there were between 59,000 and 65,000 drug deaths in 2016.

US police have issued an urgent public alert after a spate of deaths from a drug so potent it can kill anyone who touches it.
The opioid known as furanyl fentanyl – a version of the powerful synthetic painkiller fentanyl – can cause a fatal overdose just by being absorbed through the skin. It’s reportedly caused 19 deaths in the state of Georgia over the last year.
The drug was placed on the Schedule I list of controlled substances last year after being associated with 128 deaths across five states in 2015 and 2016. Schedule I is reserved for drugs with the highest levels of addictiveness.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has reacted to the number of overdoses and incidents related to the drug, as well as others, by issuing a public safety alert Thursday.
“U-47700 and furanyl fentanyl are both Schedule I drugs and used in the same manner as heroin. Schedule I drugs have a high potential for abuse and no currently accepted medical treatment use in the United States. The drugs are distributed in either powder or tablet form,” GBI said in a statement.
“Because furanyl fentanyl and U-47700 are lethal at very low doses, law enforcement and the public should use caution when handling these drugs. They can be inhaled or absorbed through the skin and are extremely toxic in the smallest quantities.”
The warning comes after 10kgs (23lbs) of pills and powder were seized during a raid on a pill factory in January, according to WSB-TV. GBI staff became alarmed when they discovered that a box containing pills marked ‘Oxycodone’, a non-hazardous opioid, was in fact furanyl fentanyl.
Gwinnett County Deputy Shannon Volkadov said: “When I found out what I actually had, [I was] definitely a little scared because of the amount that was submitted. Anything could have happened, but luckily with the protective gear and the staff that I had, everything went OK.”
GBI Crime Lab chemist Dineen Kilcrease added: “Oxycodone to touch it is still going to be very safe. To touch furanyl fentanyl could absolutely be fatal, just through the skin.”
Fentanyl itself has been on the rise in the US in recent years, surpassing heroin as the most commonly detected drug in fatal opioid overdoses in Long Island and Connecticut. Last year, the drug was responsible for 188 fatal overdoses in Connecticut, according to figures from the state’s chief medical examiner.
Across the Atlantic, an off-shoot of fentanyl, known as ‘Serial Killer’ or ‘Drop Dead,’ was discovered in the UK when the bodies of four drug users were found in the Barnsley area of South Yorkshire on April 14. This was followed by two more fatalities in Leeds and Normanton in West Yorkshire the following day.

You don’t need an MBA from Harvard to guess why Shout Factory not only selected Volker Schlöndorff’s The Handmaid’s Tale as the latest title in their Shout Selects line, but chose to put it out this week. We are, after all, just days from the debut of new Hulu series adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s book, and there is a new audiobook (with expanded material — potentially even teasing a sequel); The Handmaid’s Tale is, for lack of a better word, hot right now. But it’s also remained an unfortunately relevant piece of work – and though the earlier film version has to (understandably) skim some of that subtext, it’s still a reasonably successful piece of work.
And it comes with a good pedigree: director Schlöndorff helmed The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum and the 1979 Palme d’or winner The Tin Drum, so he knows a thing or two about political cinema, and the adaptation is credited to the great Harold Pinter. His original script was reportedly reworked greatly (much to his vocal displeasure), but enough of his blunt intelligence, coupled with Atwood’s forceful commentary and allegory, shines through.

Set at unspecified point in the future, in which the United States has become “The Republic of Gilead,” the film begins with Kate (Natasha Richardson) attempting a border crossing to Canada with her husband and daughter. But their immigration is blocked by the brutal border patrol, and they’re tossed into a camp, where health tests identify Kate as fertile; one of only 1% of the population that can conceive a child, a side effect of overwhelming pollution. “You’re the lucky ones!” she and her fellow “handmaids” are told by “Aunt Lydia” (Victoria Tennant), who will prepare them for their new roles. “You’re going to serve God and your country.”
After a period of shaming and indoctrination (they’re forced to pray to God to “make us all fruitful”), our heroine gets her assignment. She is sent to the home of Serena (Faye Dunaway) and her husband, referred to only as “The Commander” (Robert Duvall –“And Robert Duvall as The Commander,” by the way, is an all-time great opening credit, for reasons I can’t even articulate). As their household handmaid, she is to part of a rather unfortunate three-person sex situation (called “The Ceremony”), in which the husband attempts to impregnate the handmaid, while the wife participates as best she can. It seems pretty miserable for all parties.
But there’s an uprising in the offing, and Kate is game – especially since The Commander keeps insisting on unofficial encounters, without his wife there, filled with clumsy passes and forced pleasantries. She becomes involved with his driver, a smoldering, buzz-cut Aidan Quinn (their sex scenes feel very much like the movie trying to have it both ways), and she finds herself with a way out, albeit a risky one.

This Handmaid’s Tale never found an audience, perhaps due to the growing pains of upstart (and short-lived) producers Cinecom Entertainment Group, or the ongoing struggles of can’t-catch-a-break distributors MGM (or perhaps it was the hilariously ill-conceived print campaign that tried to make it look like, not making this up, an erotic thriller); its widest release was on 177 screens, and its domestic gross topped out just shy of $ 5 million. Then again, the early ‘90s were also not exactly a robust period in political cinema, and the influence of the Moral Majority – so clearly felt in Atwood’s text – wasn’t as pronounced in the Bush I White House as it had been in Reagan’s.
But, sadly, it sure is now. With Trump (who in January prohibited funding of international organizations that provide family planning, and just this week proudly signed a bill allowing states to cut funding to Planned Parenthood) in the White House, these are dangerous times for reproductive autonomy. And with an Evangelical nutjob who only sees women as baby ovens in the VP’s office, a line like “We pledge allegiance to the Bible, the Old Testament shall be our sole and only Constitution” doesn’t sound like dystopian science fiction; it sounds like a Heritage Foundation position paper. (Meanwhile, the propagandistic TV news, in which an anchor insists “We are winning God’s fight,” looks like a clip from Thursday night’s Hannity.) “We will not rest until we’ve purified this country in the name of God,” the Commander insists. It probably sounded like hyperbole back in 1990.
“The Handmaid’s Tale” is out on Blu-ray tomorrow from Shout Select. It’s also available for download via Amazon.

The Mack Avenue Engine Plant is one of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ most historic and prolific factories. It pumped out 260,000 Pentastar V6 engines last year, providing power for everything from the Jeep Grand Cherokee to the Dodge Challenger. FCA and its predecessor, Chrysler, has owned the factory since 1953 and it briefly built the Dodge Viper in the 1990s. It’s made engines since 1998 and began building the Pentastar in 2014. We got an inside look at the mighty Mack, helping to tear down a Pentastar engine and then a tour of the factory floor. This is what it’s like.
