Laurent Durieux belongs on the short list of the best pop culture artists working today. His classical style, his subtle wit, and his attention to detail lead to posters that are often astonishing to behold.

Austin’s Mondo Gallery is playing host to Durieux’s latest gallery show, titled “The Art of Laurent Durieux Part Two”, which opens today and runs through November 17. We got in touch with Durieux and he supplied us with the inspirations behind and origins of every print on display and for sale at the show, including posters for Planet of the Apes, Ghostbusters, Apocalypse Now, The Shining, and more.

Conan the Barbarian

“It was first a commission from Milan Records France, whom I had worked with before for Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence and Oldboy soundtracks LP artworks. It’s also one of the first, if not the first movie I watched in a theater as a kid and it left a great impression on me. I was scared that when I had to re-watch it to do the poster, the movie would have aged badly, but it really didn’t. It was just as awesome for a 48 year old guy as it was for an 11 year old boy.”

Planet of the Apes

“Believe it or not, as a kid, I collected the Planet of the Apes figurines. The TV shows were very popular in Europe in the late ’70s. So when I was asked to chose the movies, choosing POTA was a no-brainer to me. I had to do it. I re-watched it again, and just like Conan, it is still as great a movie today as it was 40 years ago.”

Ex Machina

“This movie is in my top five best science fiction movies of all time (along with Blade Runner, Alien, Gattaca and Star Wars). The scenario is perfect – everything in this movie is just first rate. I think it will be regarded as a masterpiece of anticipation fiction (like Netflix’s Black Mirror) in a few years. The idea for my poster was to illustrate the fact that Caleb found himself prisoner of Ava’s manipulative intelligence. Like we could all be very soon with AI…or aren’t we already?”

Ghostbusters

“I was done with my show and Mondo’s Mitch Putnam contacted me to see if we could add a true geek film to the list. So I did it. It’s always a personal challenge for me to tackle movies that are so popular you would almost choke. It’s not my favourite movie as it is, I’m sure, for many younger folks, but it’s pretty cool and it does remind me of my teenage years way back when.”

The Shining

“I don’t usually like horror movies, but here, it’s so much more than that. What could I say? Kubrick’s masterpiece of horror is a genuine masterpiece indeed. Its one of those you can watch a hundred times and discover new things, new details you hadn’t noticed before. There are so many layers on this film, that I think I could have made 10 different posters for it. The typewriter/axe project was originally done as a concept sketch for one of my fans who attended either MondoCon or ThoughtBubble in Leeds and I always loved it. There are quite a lot of existing projects with the typewriter out there, but I somehow managed to come up with something no one had thought of before.”

The Shining

“Here is an iconic sequence from the film. I couldn’t really do anything for The Shining and not use this scene. The image without the door of Room 237 hidden on the tricycle back seat wouldn’t be interesting at all. I’m not sure people will see the idea straight away, but just like my Jaws poster, it’s hiding in plain view.”

Apocalypse Now

“Three years ago, I was contacted by Francis Ford Coppola’s collaborator to ask me if I would be interested in designing/creating the visual for a steel box edition of the film. I had to turn down the offer as my schedule wasn’t allowing me to do it and told them that they probably would have to wait a couple of years before I could get to it. I was expecting them to tell me, “Well, okay, we’ll find someone else who could do it for us quicker”, but to my surprise, they said “Mr. Coppola will wait.” Apparently, Francis didn’t want anyone else but me to tackle his masterpiece of a film. What an honor!”

Apocalypse Now

Titanic

“This was a convention sketch commission done during Thought Bubble in Leeds. I showed it to Eric Garza right then and asked if they could get the license for it, as there are plenty of Titanic fans out there. You know who you are. Yes, you there with the badass tattoos! I love the movie, period. I thought the idea was pretty cool and witty. That’s our job as creators to bring new interpretations on films.”

Mystery Train

“This was originally commissioned by Milan Records France to design the artwork for the LP/CD soundtrack. I had never seen the movie before that and I loved it! Steve Buscemi alone was a good reason enough for me to do it. I love the atmosphere of this film and love the director, Jim Jarmusch. Mystery Train is one of those films that stay with you for many years after you’ve watched it.”

Elevator to the Gallows

“This image was originally commissioned by Milan Records France for a fantastic re-edtion of the Miles Davis soundtrack to Elevator to the Gallows. I had this perfect idea with the jacket cover and dust jacket, but this will never happen as the folks at Milan told me (way too late when the art was finished) that they didn’t get the license to publish it after all. Being my favorite piece of the lot, I just couldn’t bring myself to not print it or show it to people. So Mondo was very happy to make it available as an art print and that’s awesome! I LOVE THIS FILM NOIR MOVIE! If you have never watched it, please do yourself a favor.”

Tucker: The Man and His Dream

“I have a passion for vintage cars, even moreso for vintage cars that has a retro-futuristic look. I first saw this movie when it came out in the late ’80s and loved it. Martin Landau has one of his best roles ever, if you ask me. I’m not even going to talk about Jeff Bridges who is, like in all of his movies, great! This poster/image was originally commissioned by Francis Ford Coppola’s winery, as they wanted it for their Director’s Series wine label.”

It Chapter 2 trailer soon after NEW teaser poster? Pennywise is BACK https://briefnews.eu/it-chapter-2-trailer-soon-after-new-teaser-poster-pennywise-is-back/ https://briefnews.eu/it-chapter-2-trailer-soon-after-new-teaser-poster-pennywise-is-back/#respond Thu, 01 Nov 2018 08:32:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/it-chapter-2-trailer-soon-after-new-teaser-poster-pennywise-is-back/

Last year Stephen King’s IT hit cinemas as audiences flocked to see Pennywise the Clown terrorise a bunch of 80s kids.

The horror film was a box office smash, topping The Exorcist as the highest-grossing horror of all time.

A modest budget of $ 35 million managed to rake in a whopping $ 700 million worldwide.

So it’s not surprising that a sequel was quickly greenlit.

Of course, the first IT movie was only half the novel, with the second part being set 27 years later.

In the original story, the childhood part takes place in the 1950s, before bringing the action into present-day 1980s.

However, the films have gone for that Stranger Things vibe, setting the coming of age section in the 80s.

And next year It Chapter 2 will be set in our present, seeing all the kids grown up.

It Chapter 2 has a star-studded cast including , alongside James McAvoy and Bill Hader.

And now the first teaser poster for the sequel has landed to coincide with Halloween.

Of course being a teaser poster it doesn’t really do much except, well, tease the film with its title.

Nevertheless, when a poster for a new movie is launched that’s usually a sign that the first trailer is around the corner.

Last year the first IT movie trailer launched in March and was viewed a record-breaking 197 million in its first 24 hours.

However, come November Avenger Infinity War topped it with 230 million.

No doubt both films’ sequels will see their first trailers challenge these figures.

IT Chapter 2 will be released in cinemas on September 6, 2019.

Vintage ‘The Mummy’ Poster Could Become the Most Valuable Movie Poster in the World https://briefnews.eu/vintage-the-mummy-poster-could-become-the-most-valuable-movie-poster-in-the-world/ https://briefnews.eu/vintage-the-mummy-poster-could-become-the-most-valuable-movie-poster-in-the-world/#respond Sun, 14 Oct 2018 03:36:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/vintage-the-mummy-poster-could-become-the-most-valuable-movie-poster-in-the-world/ the mummy poster

The Mummy and Dracula have been waging a decades-long battle, but not in Universal’s Dark Universe. The two classic monster films have been hashing it out over the title for most expensive movie poster in the world, and The Mummy may be coming back from the dead to reclaim that title.

The rare 1932 lithographic poster for the 1932 classic Boris Karloff film The Mummy once held the record for the most expensive poster in the world after it sold at a Sotheby’s auction New York in 1997 for $ 453,500. And, according to The Hollywood Reporter, it could soon break that record again.

After decades under the ground, The Mummy is coming back to reclaim the title of most valuable poster in the world. According to Sotheby’s estimates, The Mummy rare 1932 poster is set to sell for between $ 1 million and $ 1.5 million at auction this month. This will beat out the current record-holder, the 1931 poster for Dracula, which sold for $ 525,800 last year.

The Mummy vintage poster held the record for the most expensive poster for nearly two decades after it sold at Sotheby’s New York in 1997 for $ 453,500. But that record was broken in 2014 by the 1927 poster for a Tod Browning silent horror film called London After Midnight, which in turn was staked by the 1931 poster for Dracula.

But like the titular classic monster, The Mummy keeps rising from the dead. The poster was designed by Universal’s advertising director Karoly Grosz to be displayed in movie theaters and never sold to the public. Only three are believed to remain in existence, with one owned by Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammet. Though the film has been revisited several times — most recently in the better-off-dead 2017 film starring Tom Cruise — but none is more beloved than the 1932 version starring creature feature stalwart Boris Karloff. Directed by Karl Freund, The Mummy also starred Zita Johann, who appears on the poster as Helen Grosvenor, the reincarnation of the monster’s long-lost love Princess Ankh-es-en-Amon.

Online bidding for the poster opens Thursday and closes on October 31, 2018.

The Secret Propaganda Poster Museum of Shanghai https://briefnews.eu/the-secret-propaganda-poster-museum-of-shanghai/ https://briefnews.eu/the-secret-propaganda-poster-museum-of-shanghai/#respond Wed, 10 Oct 2018 18:42:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-secret-propaganda-poster-museum-of-shanghai/ When you walk up to the graying building complex on Shanghai’s Huashan Road in a former French Concession, the guards know exactly why you have come. One will hurry over, smiling, and hand you a flyer with a map of directions to the spot every lost-looking tourist walking past the gates is likely looking for: the Shanghai Propaganda Poster Art Centre.

But it’s worth the search expedition. Because one of the best things about Shanghai is not the Bund, Pearl Tower or Nanjing Road, but this museum tucked away in the basement of an unassuming building, spread out over three modest rooms filled with what is possibly the largest collection of Chinese propaganda posters anywhere in the world. Dating as far back as 1949, the 6,000-odd posters are a fascinating glimpse into 20th century China.

P1010806

It started as a hobby for the museum’s founder, Yang Pei Ming, who began collecting the posters in the ’80s when China was in the early stages of opening up to the world. Posters that had long graced the walls of government organizations, museums, libraries and cultural centers were being discarded. Yang found the bulk of his posters around Shanghai, where the majority of them had originally been printed. “No other country has produced so many and such beautiful propaganda posters as China did,” Yang explains.

This extended glimpse into China’s past also lays bare the murkier side of history.

The vast collection can be divided into three main eras. First, the Maoist era after the founding of the People’s Republic of China, when Chairman Mao Zedong called upon artists to produce work that reflected the nation’s transformation. Then the years of the Great Leap Forward in the late ’50s, and the unexpected disaster that was the Great Famine. Mao had declared that artists must paint aspirational pictures for the nation. This resulted in poster art moving away from themes of Soviet socialist realism and embracing specifically Chinese elements. Posters focused on milestones like the wildly disastrous Four Pests Campaign, opposed U.S. imperialism — with cartoon depictions of the country as a shrunken, green villain — and declared ownership of Tibet.

The third era — the Cultural Revolution and after — is when Chinese propaganda art skyrocketed, with woodcut posters and bold and expressive imagery. Themes included everything from the youth heading to work in the countryside to the country’s progress in science and technology to the “triumph” of human will over nature.

N08

This extended glimpse into China’s past also lays bare the murkier side of history. A particularly eerie example: the reproduction of a 1953 poster depicting the “grand ceremony to mark the founding of the People’s Republic of China.” The original features Mao with a group of party leaders. However the 1956 reproduction features the exact same scene, but without party leader Gao Gang (who had been among the casualties of the first major purge within the Chinese Communist Party).

Each poster is accompanied by detailed information, mostly in English — visitors to the Shanghai Propaganda Poster Art Centre are predominantly foreign. The museum is featured in a couple of Western guidebooks and travel websites, but it’s not well-known at home — none of my Chinese co-workers in Beijing had heard of it. Yang says the interest among internationals is higher because local people are familiar with poster art. Nonetheless, I still consider it a small victory that I managed to coerce a co-worker to visit the museum on his latest trip to Shanghai. “It’s very interesting,” he said, scratching his chin thoughtfully. “But why so hard to find?”

But hey, isn’t that the case with all the best treasures?

Dynasty's 'Real' Cristal Flores Makes Her Debut in Official Season 2 Poster https://briefnews.eu/dynastys-real-cristal-flores-makes-her-debut-in-official-season-2-poster/ https://briefnews.eu/dynastys-real-cristal-flores-makes-her-debut-in-official-season-2-poster/#respond Wed, 19 Sep 2018 18:07:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dynastys-real-cristal-flores-makes-her-debut-in-official-season-2-poster/ You won’t have to wait until October for your first glimpse at Dynasty‘s new Cristal: The CW on Wednesday unveiled its drama’s official Season 2 poster, which includes Ana-Brenda Contreras as the “real” version of the character.

As you’ll recall, Dynasty‘s first season ended on a cliffhanger, with Cristal — played at the time by Nathalie Kelley — getting shot in the stomach and trapped in a fire. In June, Kelley spoiled her character’s ultimate demise by revealing she wouldn’t be returning to film any Season 2 scenes.

“Is it a coma? Is it death?… I actually don’t know,” Kelley said at the time. “But I know that I’m not going to Atlanta in July, that I’m staying [in Los Angeles]… I’ve got my life back.”

CW president Mark Pedowitz later confirmed Kelley’s departure at the Television Critics Association press tour in August, at which point Mexican-American actress Contreras was brought on board as the “real” Cristal.

“It’s a wild soap. It’s like a telenovela,” Pedowitz said of the twist. “You do things that make sense for the moment and based on where the storylines go. That’s really all it’s about…. It was the plan starting about midseason to go in [this] direction.”

In addition to Contreras, the Season 2 key art — which warns, “Where there’s a will, there’s a war.” — features Elizabeth Gillies as Fallon Carrington, Nicollette Sheridan as Alexis Carrington and Grant Show as Blake Carrington.

Dynasty returns Friday, Oct. 12, at 8/7c on The CW. Check out the Season 2 poster below, then hit the comments with your thoughts.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: First Poster Puts Salem Front and Center https://briefnews.eu/chilling-adventures-of-sabrina-first-poster-puts-salem-front-and-center/ https://briefnews.eu/chilling-adventures-of-sabrina-first-poster-puts-salem-front-and-center/#respond Tue, 10 Jul 2018 21:05:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chilling-adventures-of-sabrina-first-poster-puts-salem-front-and-center/ Something wicked cool this way comes.

The first poster for Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was released on Tuesday — courtesy of series creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa — and it finds the show’s titular spell caster (played by Mad Men‘s Kiernan Shipka) cozying up to her familiar Salem (whose voice actor has not yet been announced).

Based on the comic book series of the same name, this 10-episode Netflix drama “imagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft.” Described as being in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist, the series finds Sabrina making peace with her dual nature — half-witch, half-mortal — while “standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.” You know, regular teen stuff.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina also stars Lucy Davis as Aunt Hilda, Miranda Otto as Aunt Zelda, Ross Lynch as Harvey Kinkle (click here for a first look!), Jaz Sinclair as Sabrina’s BFF Rosalind Walker, Tati Gabrielle as her rival Prudence, Chance Perdomo as her cousin Ambrose, Bronson Pinchot as her villainous school principal George Hawthorne and Michelle Gomez as her possessed teacher Mary Wardell.

Check the poster out in full below, then drop a comment with your thoughts.
