Back pain treatment is subject to postcode lotteryGETTY – STOCK

Back pain treatment is subject to a postcode lottery

But a new report from the British Chiropractic Association shows that our chances of curing or even just reducing the pain, depend upon where we live in the UK.

The research found significant differences in the number of people experiencing long term back or neck pain across Britain, with rates between regions varying by more than 17per cent.

People in Northern Ireland are suffering the most, with 57per cent saying they currently have back or neck pain. Those in the South East appear to have the best back or neck health, with only 40 per cent of people complaining of pain.

These figures are in comparison to the national average of 44per cent, representing a 12per cent rise in back and neck pain nationally since 2017.

Taking simple steps can be really effective in reducing your experience of back pain.

Catherine Quinn

Those in the Midlands are developing back or neck pain the earliest – with a huge 70 per cent of residents experiencing back or neck pain by the age of 30, compared to just under half (48per cent) of people in the East of England.

Londoners were the most likely to take proactive steps to prevent back or neck pain before it occurs, closely followed by those in the South West.

Catherine Quinn, president of the British Chiropractic Association, said: “This study suggests the occurrence of back and neck pain has increased over the past year, and it appears we should all be following the lead of the South East where they seem to be managing this best.

“Taking simple steps can be really effective in reducing your experience of back pain.

“It’s interesting to note that certain regions are seeing back and neck pain among a much younger age group.

“Back and neck pain can of course develop at any age and is usually not serious, however this could be a sign that modern and increasingly sedentary lifestyles are impacting on the younger populations back health.”

She added: “Whatever your age, my top piece of advice for those experiencing back or neck pain would be to get out and about and ensure you are incorporating physical activity into your daily routines.

“There are also a number simple exercises and small changes you can use on a daily basis to prevent pain, for example, putting both hands on the back of your head, pushing your elbows back and then shrugging your shoulders whilst sitting or standing are easy ways to stay active – these may sound basic but I know from my patients that they really work!”

The new study also highlighted that:

• Scots are suffering most frequently with a third experiencing back or neck pain on a daily basis, compared to just 17per cent in London

• Lifting and carrying was reported as the top back or neck pain trigger for all regions, followed by sitting still for long periods

• The majority of regions said that back or neck pain was most likely to prevent them sleeping, followed by exercising.

In the UK, some two and half million people suffer agonising pain every single day. It is the most common cause of job-related disability, and affects men and women equally.

Most back pain is short-term, but about one in five people affected by acute low back pain go on to develop chronic low back pain lasting a year or more.

A compressed and herniated disk, in which the rubbery cushion between vertebrae impinges on and irritates nearby nerves, is a major cause of low back pain that can radiate to the legs.

And experts say the condition has become an epidemic in the UK with back, neck and muscle problems causing millions of days of work to be lost each year, according to the Office for National Statistics.

New figures, released by the UK Statistics Authority, showed that workers aged 50-64 lost around 4.2 million working days due to back pain in 2014.

Those aged 25-34 were absent for 1.89 million days, while those in the 35-49 bracket missed 3.86 million days. The total cost to the economy of the number of back-related sick days is now more than £1billion..

Traditionally, sufferers who go to their GP with back pain are treated through a combination of physiotherapy and painkillers such as paracetamol.

Surgery is an option in extreme cases. The extremely debilitating condition is, along with osteoarthritis, the leading cause of disability throughout the world.

Current NHS advice to sufferers varies, depending on the severity of cases.

The BCA recommends that, if you are experiencing pain for more than a few days then you seek professional help, as an undiagnosed problem could lead to longer-term problems if left untreated

Return of the postcode wars: How UK govt allowed London to be carved up into gangland https://briefnews.eu/return-of-the-postcode-wars-how-uk-govt-allowed-london-to-be-carved-up-into-gangland/ https://briefnews.eu/return-of-the-postcode-wars-how-uk-govt-allowed-london-to-be-carved-up-into-gangland/#respond Tue, 03 Apr 2018 17:23:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/return-of-the-postcode-wars-how-uk-govt-allowed-london-to-be-carved-up-into-gangland/ Knife crime was coming down just a few years ago, but now London is gripped by an epidemic of attacks. Teenagers are being killed and children caught up in drive-by shootings in some of London’s most poverty-stricken boroughs.

In one week, eight people were stabbed to death, and this weekend, a girl aged 17 was shot in the chest, before dying in her mother’s arms. Knife crime experts and charities have slammed the government, which has slowly withdrawn funding and support for preventative projects. Children in the city, one group said, are suffering deep “trauma” both physically and mentally because of the attacks.

So-called ‘postcode wars’ which were prominent in 2010/11 are returning, with neighboring boroughs and gangs fighting over territory. Ben Kinsella, 16, was stabbed to death in 2008 after being set upon by three men. That year, 21 young people were stabbed to death in London; in one 24-hour period in July alone, six people were murdered.

In the following years, campaigners ensured the government listened to parents’ fears and honored the dead by plowing cash into knife prevention work. Yet, with a fall in violent crime, experts say the money ended and now as austerity bites the problems have begun again.

Those involved in knife crime in London appear to be disproportionately young black males. However, they themselves say it is more to do with the areas they live in, rather than race.

Patrick Green, CEO of the Ben Kinsella Trust, told RT UK: “Speaking to young black men in Tottenham recently, they said to me you could put anybody in their community, red, green, orange – and it would be exactly the same.

“There were two men in their late 20s who had never been to Oxford Street, until they were in their 20s, because they were fearful of leaving Tottenham. They were afraid of leaving their area, they said they would be attacked.”

Funding across the capital, Green said, is where the focus needs to be to stop problems before they begin.

He said: “The overall violent crime figures at the time were appalling and now they are right back to where they were when Ben was murdered. In 2014, figures were significantly lower than what they are now, around 25,000. Last year about 37,500. That’s a 50 percent increase in three years.

“When you look at the approach taken around 2010/11, there was a significant amount of concern around violent crime. There was a push for preventative work and youth work. There was a recognition if you want to stop violent crime you have to stop people carrying knives in the first place. Diversion work.

“Violent crime falls and there is a perception violent crime is no longer a big issue. A lot of services which are funded to help young people start to disappear under austerity cuts.”

The cash ended around 2014/15, and suddenly the numbers began to climb again.

Green said: “We need to be addressing the causes. If you start at poverty, this is the driver for most criminality. Knife crime across London, poverty is certainly a driver,” Green said.

“There is also a race issue between London and the rest of the country. The majority of people involved outside London are white, most of those involved inside London are black or ethnic minority groups.

“One consistent threat is deprivation, which drives drug and gangs and creates postcode wars. They carry a knife for protection and for status.”

Other activists have called for the legal framework to be addressed and punishment to resemble systems used decades ago in the UK.

Danny O’Brien from London-based Anti-Knife UK said there needs to be a tougher approach to criminality. He called for action on murders, stabbings and the carrying of knives, suggesting prisons do not work.

A national service-type arrangement is what is needed, he said.

He said: “For every knife case it is different, nobody knows what they are going to get. We have to start getting tough on young men and women carrying knives – but not prison. Custodial sentences don’t work. People come out of prison and want to take over their area again and then you get these conflicts.

“Criminalizing people doesn’t work. You get a boy given a sentence and then he can’t work, and then he has a chip on his shoulder, and then he turns to crime again. There needs to be a national service-type arrangement. There is also an issue with communities talking to the police, they don’t want to be a ‘snitch.’ There is no trust between the authorities and the communities.”

O’Brien also said rising figures in domestic violence must be addressed. Police have often claimed the rocketing figures are down to more reporting after campaigns to women to open up.

Knife crime charities and women’s services have said more must be done to protect victims of domestic violence.

REVEALED: Your postcode defines how SAFE your food is https://briefnews.eu/revealed-your-postcode-defines-how-safe-your-food-is/ https://briefnews.eu/revealed-your-postcode-defines-how-safe-your-food-is/#respond Sat, 25 Mar 2017 02:44:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/revealed-your-postcode-defines-how-safe-your-food-is/

With around 500,000 food poisoning cases a year, the latest Which? research reveals there is still a huge variation in food hygiene standards across the country, with one in five high or medium risk food establishments failing to meet requirements.

Which? found that in 20 local authority areas the chances of someone buying from a food business that is not meeting hygiene requirements was as high as 1 in 3, and in the lowest-rated local authority area, Hyndburn in Lancashire, this rose to nearly 2 in every 3 outlets.

As the Food Standards Agency undertakes a fundamental review of how the food enforcement system works, Which? analysed data submitted to the FSA and Food Standards Scotland by 386 UK local authorities and ranked those local authority areas based on: the proportion of medium and high risk premises meeting hygiene requirements, the proportion of total premises rated for risk, and the proportion of planned interventions (such as inspections or follow up actions) the authorities achieved.

The lowest ranking local authority areas according to Which?’s analysis include:

• Hyndburn in Lancashire was the local authority area with the lowest ranking with only 35 per cent of its medium and high risk businesses meeting acceptable hygiene standards.

• Birmingham, with 8071 food businesses, was second from bottom overall, with only 59 per cent of medium to high risk businesses found to be broadly compliant with hygiene rules. In contrast, 82 per cent of medium to high risk businesses were compliant in Leeds, which has a comparable total of 7603 premises.

• Four London local authority areas (Newham, Ealing, Lewisham and Camden) were all ranked in the bottom 10.

The highest ranking local authority areas according to Which?’s analysis include:

• Erewash in Derbyshire, which topped the table with a 97 per cent compliance rate.

• Sunderland as the highest ranking Metropolitan Borough in England.

• The five most improved local authority areas since our analysis two years ago are: Bexley, Sunderland, Stock port, South Cambridgeshire and Barrow-in Furness.

Bexley is now ranked number one in London, despite being bottom of the UK-wide table four years ago.

With food production becoming ever more complex at a time when the resources of regulators and Local Authorities are under pressure, the FSA and FSS review will look at options such as tighter checks when a food business opens and how data from businesses can be used more effectively.

However, Which? is concerned that proposed reforms could see a potential shift towards more inspections being carried out by third parties employed by businesses in place of checks by public authorities.

Which? is calling on the regulators to ensure that a robust food standards system is put in place that serves consumer interests and avoids any conflicts of interest.

In a landscape that is heavily underpinned by EU regulation, a comprehensive strategy for enforcement post-Brexit is needed, as the UK is likely to take on much more responsibility for checks on imported food products.

Alex Neill, Which? Managing Director of Home Services said: “People expect their food to be safe, but there is clearly still work to be done.

“As we prepare to leave the EU, the Government and regulators need to ensure that there is a robust, independent system of enforcement in place “to give people confidence that the food they’re eating is hygienic”.
