Ms McGovern became a famous face for the BBC. Having daily spots on its flagship breakfast show, the broadcaster was able to increase her public profile through the corporation. She slowly rose through the ranks, becoming the main businesses presenter for Breakfast. Often, Ms McGovern would host the entire show. Her rise to the top was a remarkable story, given she started as an intern on the Tomorrow’s World programme before securing part-time work as a current affairs researcher. Many serenaded Ms McGovern with messages of congratulation after she announced she and her girlfriend were expecting their first child. She eventually gave birth to a baby girl in November 2019. She was, however, an outspoken critic of the BBC’s gender pay gap row, in which the corporation’s data revealed men earned disproportionately more for the same jobs. Shortly after receiving a salary boost in the aftermath of the row which saw her pay-packet increase to a six-figure salary, Ms McGovern again spoke out about her pay, or what she saw as a lack thereof. She complained to The Sunday Times that her fellow “posh” broadcasters earned more than her. JUST IN: Charlie Stayt hounds MP Simon Clarke over two-metre rule “But what the BBC doesn’t do enough of is thinking about getting people from more working-class backgrounds. “It’s just posh.” The Middlesbrough-born presenter said “a lot of people in management are from the same background”. “We’re talking about: ‘How do we represent more working class people?’ when they themselves are not working class. “So how do they know?” She went on to tell of an encounter with a manager who told her she was “too common” to be a BBC presenter. Ms McGovern, seeing the media storm she had caused by doing the interview, quickly made an attempt to clarify what she meant. The day after the piece was published, she posted a tweet that read: “I was asked to do an interview with the education editor at the Sunday Times about my work with Young Enterprise; a charity helping young people learn about business which I have been heavily involved with for many years. “Towards the end of the interview I was asked about BBC pay and culture. I said I thought that the issue wasn’t just about gender, but also about class. “I also said that we talk a lot in the BBC about how to be better at ethnic diversity, which is important because we’re not good enough at it. However we never talk about class and I suggested that if we did it would make us more diverse in lots of ways, including ethnicity. “I am in a very fortunate position; I love my job and never dreamed I would have such an amazing career and salary. I grew up in Middlesbrough, a town that is often portrayed in a negative light, but one I love. “I want the people I grew up with and everyone from a place deemed as ‘poor’ to know that they should never be held back from achieving the best in life and they should be proud of where they’re from. That’s it.” Ms McGovern left the BBC in October 2019 and now presents ‘The Steph Show’ on Channel 4’. Good Morning Britain hosts Susanna Reid and Ben Shephard welcomed former The Apprentice star Ryan-Mark onto the show to discuss his idea koala fur should be sold for charity. However, many of those watching the show hit out at the star for his “disturbing” suggestion. Susanna began: “You know, we’re there watching these terrible scenes on our screens, these poor creatures suffering and dying in these bushfires. Now you’re saying let’s use their fur. “You know it’s kind of a sick idea isn’t it?” “Well I don’t think it’s a sick idea because you have to take into account, the purpose of this, is to raise money for the animals in the rescue centres,” Ryan-Mark hit back. “I’m not saying, I’m not going on this debate saying we need to slaughter koalas. Susanna asked: “What kind of products would you make with the fur?” “It will be fur products,” The Apprentice star continued. “It could be a scarf for example. It could be something someone could wear.” Wendy Turner then cut in to ask: “Who would want to? It’s grotesque, it’s really grotesque.” The debate sparked fury from viewers watching Good Morning Britain with many taking to Twitter to hit out at Ryan-Mark and his idea. One viewer shared: “Are you for real? As soon as this is over people will start hunting Koalas!! This is a ridiculous concept! #gmb #savethekoalas.” Another added: “#GMB I think this is disgusting they are already going extinct and you need to let them die and respect that!! “This man is a horrible human being he is on the same level as trophies hunters!!” A third continued: “So raise money for charity you want to sell koala fur??? Are you stupid??? #gmb.” “#GMB Those koalas went through the most appalling deaths now skin them. Is he for real?!” someone else continued. “Is his publicity waning now. What an insensitive idea. His thoughts are disturbing…” Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am. Now Gary Usher has turned his attention to revamping an old betting shop into a posh eatery. The chef’s mission to launch Pinion in Prescot, Merseyside – the first restaurant to open there for 30 years – features in a Channel 4 documentary. Cameras follow Gary as he crowdfunds cash, facing scepticism from locals and his own financial adviser, who warns that his high-end bistro in a rundown town centre could fail. The St Albans-born chef, who now has six restaurants in the north of England, said: “When I was younger I definitely didn’t want to be a chef. I ended up in a kitchen washing dishes because I didn’t feel I had any choices – I was so thick, academically. “I was taking lots of drugs and I was shoplifting. I was a loser. But when I did start in a kitchen… I was suddenly good at something.” He went on to cut his teeth at the Michelin-starred Chester Grosvenor, Chez Bruce and Gordon Ramsay’s York & Albany. Of his decision to raise money from the public, Gary said: “I don’t bother trying the bank first because I know they’ll say no. “If you put a hundred quid into this crowdfund in Prescot, we’ll give you a hundred quid’s worth of food in the restaurant when it opens.Without that initial money it would be impossible.” Gary is seen helping young chef Danny settle in the area. Danny, who has struggled with addiction and whose parents died when he was three, describes the chef as a “second dad”. Gary said: “If you can inspire a group of people by working harder than everyone else, that will come back round – and they’ll work harder than you, for you, with you, because they believe in you.” The Rebel Chef: My Restaurant Revolution, Channel 4, Thursday, 10pm He said: “If you’re going to assemble a team now, it’s not going to be six Oxbridge white blokes. “It’s going to be a diverse range of people who reflect the modern world.” But in an interview with Radio Times this week, Palin dismissed the suggestion that background matters more than being funny. He said: “What does he mean? If you’ve had a good education and you’re white you’re not able to write comedy? “What are they going to say? ‘Oh God! The man who wrote that’s an Etonian.’ ‘But it’s hilarious.’ ‘It’s no good, he’s an Etonian!’” The 75-year-old star met fellow Python Terry Jones at Oxford University, where the pair performed with comedy group The Oxford Revue. John Cleese, Graham Chapman and Eric Idle attended Cambridge University’s prestigious Footlights drama club, whose alumni dominated British comedy in the Eighties. Palin added: “It [Python] is known all over the world yet they still find it difficult to deal with.” He said the days when the BBC would commission 13 shows without asking to check the script have long gone. Palin observed: “They want to know what you’re writing about, how long it will take, how much it will cost. It has to be checked for political correctness, ‘compliance’, ‘diversity’. It’s much more controlled.” He also said he and Terry Jones still enjoy moments where things “click”, despite Jones, 76, who directed Monty Python’s Life Of Brian and The Meaning Of Life, suffering with dementia. Palin said: “He can’t communicate his thoughts any more. It’s sad. I’m very fond of him and I enjoy hanging out. Occasionally things click and we can understand each other.” The presenter stars as WM Thackeray in a new production of the 19th century author’s novel Vanity Fair. The first episode airs on ITV1 at 9pm on Sunday. Countryfile has become an institution on the BBC since it first aired nearly 30 years ago, and has added various different presenters to its roster over the years. Yet despite a total of eight years being a part of the programme, English broadcaster Ben, 44, was finally let go because of his background. Around the same time, Ben’s co-host Miriam O’Reilly on the show was also dropped from the team. The star, who was then aged 52, came out to share that she was fired because of her age. Speaking to the Daily Express, Ben explained that he was released from his contract because of his “accent”. “When Miriam was dropped from Countryfile she said it was to do with age,” he went on. “I was working with her and dropped from the show at the same time and was told it was because of my accent. “I don’t want to name names but I was told by someone [high up on the show] that my accent was inaccessible.” Following Miriam’s exit from Countryfile, she later successfully sued the BBC for age discrimination. Ben didn’t follow the same path however and even returned to the nature programme in 2014. The adventurer then left the show for reasons unknown a year later. Ben is currently in the planning stages of his monumental mission to Mount Everest with former Olympic champion Victoria Pendleton. The pair are tackling the climb in a bid to raise money for the Red Cross. Appearing on Good Morning Britain to discuss his new project, Ben couldn’t resist taking a good-natured swipe at host Piers Morgan, who is taking a break from the breakfast show this week. Speaking to hosts Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley, Ben joked about Piers’ incredibly competitive side. When asked how he feels about the challenge, the presenter said: “We may come back into the studio and I may hold my head a little bit down because we hadn’t done it but we want to show people it’s the whole journey. “We need Piers here because we need to reiterate to him it’s not about winning but it’s about taking part and having a go. “Just try, and if you don’t try, you’ll never know.” Despite the jokes, Ben confessed he is realistic about the failure rate of climbing Everest and will accept the disappointment if he doesn’t succeed the challenge. Countryfile continues Sunday at 7pm on BBC One.
SOMERLEYTONHALL
Fritton Lake on Somerleyton Hall estate in Suffolk has welcomed tourists for more than 100 years
But what could be more exciting than having your own holiday hideaway that earns you money?
Holiday lodge parks are sprouting up all around Britain’s coast, often replacing caravan parks, but a new generation of holiday providers is offering luxurious lodges on a spacious plot with perhaps a gastro-pub, spa and golf course nearby as well as unspoilt countryside.
Some of these holiday parks are even in the grounds of stately homes, such as Fritton Lake Resort on Somerleyton Estate in Norfolk, the home of Lord and Lady Somerleyton – Hugh and Lara Crossley.
Fritton Lake has welcomed locals and tourists for more than 100 years but as well as a campsite and club pub with rooms – The Fritton Arms – it also has Hill Wood, a new collection of contemporary log cabins with huge sun terraces beside a lake, in what is described as “a low density and tranquil environment”.

Fritton Lakes’ ShedRoom lodges have luxury contemporary interiors
Only four plots remain on the site five miles from the sea near the southern Broads, with prices from £265,000 and annual ground rent of £7,100.
Equally stylish are its ShedRooms with the option of a concierge service.
There are five plots left, from £240,000 with £6,100 annual ground rent (01493 488666; somerleyton.co.uk).
“Fritton Lake is part of a ‘rewilding’ project that is close to my heart,” says Lord Somerleyton.

“The land is being restored to its natural, uncultivated state, so expect to see deer and other wildlife roaming freely around the lake.”
When owners are not using their holiday homes, the estate says up to £1,500 net rental income per week can be earned by sub-letting organised through Fritton Lake Holiday Resort during the high season.
But while Somerleyton Hall is a one-off, market-leading Dream Lodge is also adapting to the demand for more space.
Managing director Simon Moir says of its two new sites: “We call them super-parks because there is approximately one lodge per acre – 26 per park in 26 acres of natural beauty.”

Elegant lodges such as those at Farnham Park, Suffolk are selling fast
Farnham Park in Suffolk, seat of the Duke of Norfolk, opened last summer and with the first phase of 26 lodges sold out, keen buyers are already registering interest for the second and final phase of 26.
The site is on parkland landscaped by Capability Brown and next to a golf course plus spa, gym and beauty salon facilities.
Prices start from £180,000 for a two-bedroom cedar wood lodge, rising to £350,000 (01279 297657; thedreamlodgegroup.co.uk).
The second super-park is at Newbury in Berkshire, next to the race course in an Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty with a golf club and health club nearby.

Lodges at Farnham Park in Suffolk cost from £180,000 for a two-bedroom cedar wood lodge
“We have already got people who have purchased options on the second phase but we are holding back and not releasing it on the market until next month,” says Moir.
The bigger plots are the result of feedback and he says: “We found that the lodges have become larger and we felt that the way to go forward was to give more recreation space between each lodge so they can’t overhear their neighbours and when they are sitting watching the sunset in the hot tubs they feel complete tranquillity.
“The lodges have increased by one-and-a-half to twofold and we felt the plots were inadequate for the lodges that take eight to 12 people.”
More sites with large plots are planned: “It is just about acquiring the right sites and we feel the planners have been supportive towards that type of layout,” says Moir, who adds that other park owners are following this model.
“Putting lodges where caravans used to be is not the right way to go about it so that is why we prefer to buy new parks,” he adds.
Dream Lodge offers a guaranteed 8 per cent rate of return for three to four years for investors who rent out their holiday homes through its letting service, followed by the option to join a select letting service.

Lady Amelia Windsor enjoys a charmed life as a member of the British royal family, and like most royal children she attended a posh private school.
However, such an education does not come cheap, and the fees at St Mary’s School Ascot are far beyond what most British parents could afford.
The school, which is located in Acost, is a boarding school which was named 2016 “Public School of the Year” at the annual Tatler Schools Awards.
The Roman Catholic school is a girls only institution and takes around 380 students at any one time, accepting girls age 11 to 18.
Students that board at the school are sorted into five houses, Babthorpe, Bedingfeld, Poyntz, Rookwood and Wigmore, which are all named after nuns.
Girls who aspire to attend the school must take an entrance exam, have an interview and a provide report from their current school.
The school’s website states: “If you wish to apply for entry to St Mary’s, we suggest that you register your daughter at least two years prior to the year of entry. This will place your daughter on the candidate list to sit our entrance examination.”
So how much does the school charge parents? For the academic year 2017 to 2018 the school charges £12,260 per term for full boarding.
If a child were to board from years 7 to 13 under the current fee, plus the initial £200 registration fee and £2000 acceptance fee required by the school, parents would pay a whopping £259,660.
What can parents expect in return for spending over a quarter of a million pounds on their child’s eduction?
Notable alumni of the school include actress Annabel Mullion, who had a part on Law and Order UK, BBC One Breakfast anchor Louise Minchin and wife of Harold Pinter, Antonia Fraser who wrote the Jemima Shore detective novels.
Lady Amelia Windsor’s Instagram account shows off the royal’s model credentials.
She has walked the runway for Dolce and Gabbana and is represented by the same agency as Kate Moss.
Lady Amelia has modelled for footwear designer Penelope Chilvers and has appeared in Teen Vogue.
She has also taken an internship at Chanel in the French capital before going to Edinburgh University to study French and Italian.
The model often posts pictures of her with her friends, at various festivals and travelling the world. She is also keen on selfies.
