The dirty (baker’s) dozen competing in Season 12 of RuPaul’s Drag Race finally shared the screen on Friday, and regardless of who actually won or lost, we can all agree on one thing: This was the night that America fell in love with Heidi N. Closet. The Powers That Be may hate her drag name — Ru even took the time to explain how difficult it is to pronounce — but anytime Heidi got a spotlight, be it on the runway or on the set of a fake reality show, the judges couldn’t stop singing her praises. I’m not necessarily predicting that she’ll land in the Top 3 (or 4?), but Heidi serves as an important reminder that you shouldn’t judge a closet by its door. OK, on to the episode. In what may have been the shadiest mini challenge in Drag Race herstory, Ru asked Widow Von’Du and Jaida Essence Hall to rank their fellow queens based on first impressions. For the record, here’s who they each consider their strongest (and weakest) competition… Widow: Sherry Pie, Jan, Dahlia Sin, Rock M. Sakura, Aiden Zhane But Aiden and Heidi ended up getting the last laugh, as Ru revealed that they would join Widow and Heidi as captains for this week’s four-team maxi challenge. (Thus began the Week of Heidi!) And the shade continued as the captains assembled their teams: Aiden recruited Sherry and Brita, Heidi enlisted Jackie and Gigi, Widow picked Nicky and Crystal, and Jaida selected Jan and Dahlia. There was already something about Rock that made me want to reach through my TV and give her a hug, so that feeling only intensified when none of the queens chose her to join their team; she ended up tagging along with Jaida. This week’s maxi challenge was to write and act out an audition for World’s Worst, a reality show for “wannabe performers with big dreams, outrageous backstories and no talent whatsoever.” It actually turned out to be a really fun American Idol spoof, though I feel like the name was more of a nod to Ru’s short-lived CBS competition show World’s Best. (For the record, if the World’s Best judges panel had consisted of Ross Mathews, Charo and freaking Ornacia, CBS definitely would have renewed it for a second season.) And on the runway, a buttons-and-bows theme inspired a surprising variety of eccentric looks, from Heidi’s “delightful” Pinocchi-ho getup to Nicky’s oversized hair button. But it was Sherry who emerged the winner of this week’s challenge, due to… reasons. (I don’t think we really need to elaborate on her victory, do you?) Despite the aforementioned hair button, which the judges appreciated, Nicky found herself lip syncing against Dahlia — whose impressive runway look apparently wasn’t enough to redeem her low-energy performance in the challenge — to the tune of Ariana Grande’s “Problem.” Frankly, neither contestant seemed particularly engaged in the battle. If I had been in Ru’s wig, I would have sent them both home, especially after allowing two weeks to go by with nary an elimination. But I’m not in Ru’s wig. She is. And she chose to send home Dahlia Sin. Your thoughts on Season 12’s first elimination? Vote for the queen you would have sent home below, then drop a comment with your take on the episode.

]]>Studies show that increasing flexibility can eliminate generalized or specific body pain. If you have chronic pain Fibromyalgia or are trying re-condition your muscles, regular stretching will ease stress and tension due to work or other stressful issues in your life.
Since I’ve made Yoga a habit, I’ve noticed a change in my overall mood. A strong mindset is everything if you want to sustain a positive outlook on the things that happen to and around you.
Your mind is one of the most important assets and keeping it in the right place will help you get through those tough curve balls life can throw at us.
Six years ago, I started doing yoga each morning and now I do it morning and night for about ten to twenty minutes. Bottom line: Yoga can save your life, and it did mine. Thank goodness I did that because three years ago, my lung collapsed on a flight and almost died. It was traumatic and scary but I focused on doing as much breathing as my lungs allowed.
But even in the midst of the scary situation, my Yoga-strength lifted me up and out of that chair so I could get to a hospital. Looking back, I see how Yoga carried me through the trauma.
Mental and physical strength go hand-in-hand but mentally, you have to be in a good mind-frame to move through those hardships.
We can’t know when tragedy or hardships will strike. To understand how Yoga can transform your life, you must first know how it benefits you.
If you’ve ever looked at an ocean on a windy day and noticed busy, angry waves, you’ve probably also noticed that you can’t see the ocean floor even near the shore.
When our minds are busy with angry or turbulent thoughts, you can’t think clearly. Our thoughts or thinking paths we return to can be so destructive that our ability to function and work efficiently becomes encumbered.
Trouble in your work life may arise and leave you mentally exhausted from trying to keep up with everything and everyone. Being overwhelmed all the time will cause a burnout. A burnout essentially is when your mind and body surrender to the exhaustion and they both shut down.
Morning Yoga creates stillness in the mind which then leads to calmness which then leads to happiness. Twenty minutes of a stretch routine to focus on diaphragmatic breathing as you move with your body will target your anxiety and depression.
You can get overwhelmed at any time but when you establish any routine, you’ll be compelled to create more healthy routines such as snacking healthier, doing things that decrease your stress, and pre-planning so you can effectively tackle that ever-changing to-do list.
Have you ever flipped out on something small, almost unnecessary and asked yourself, “Why did I blow my lid over that?” Did you find yourself in that inevitable situation of needing to explain yourself after? I think to some degree, we’ve all been there at one time or another.
When we’ve entered ‘flip out’ mode or have become irritable, that’s a sign of an imbalanced emotional state of mind. You’ll wind up self-sabotaging without realizing it or feeling like you can’t get everything done on time and so, you lose it.
Our current moods reflect our emotional health and how we process life’s issues and mysteries.
Morning Yoga is a great way to strengthen your emotional health as it boosts your mood. Instead of keeping your emotions on a roller-coaster, do yoga, get off that up and down chaos and level out.
Think of your mood as a smooth ocean current, steady and still. A daily Yoga regimen will make you feel like you’re mind is floating on water.
Those sugar cravings can arise at any time but between 2:00 and 4:00 P.M., they can sneak up on you. What you’re feeling is sudden fatigue or a dip in your alertness, which can occur if you’re not getting enough adequate sleep.
But if you do some Yoga poses such as lying down with your legs stretched up a wall or sitting on the floor and raising up your arms, those poses can help you eliminate those cravings.
Developing a healthy sleep life, which includes morning and evening routines, are one of the ways morning Yoga can assist.
Balance means different things to everyone. Doing yoga each morning will enhance your sleep and aid in regulating brain activity.
When it’s night time, the brain produces melatonin. If you’re not allowing your brain the time to prepare for sleep, that can mess with your circadian rhythms and sleep cycles.
Doing Yoga each day is a wonderful form of meditation that directly affects your brain and mind simultaneously.
Some people are more alert in the mornings while others are at night.
Yoga will sustain your physical stamina and endurance throughout your work day and all the way into the evening. This was one change I noticed the more I incorporated Yoga into my mornings.
As someone who has suffered chronic fatigue, Yoga rescued me and allows me to work hours on end and keep my focus on important tasks. I stopped having spurts of weakness in my muscles mid-day.
Now that you know how morning yoga can change your life, it’s time to get started or pick it back up again if you’ve stopped for a while.
Here are ten beginner poses (that will make a difference) for your flexibility, stress levels and overall well-being:
The Cat and Cow pose is perfect for restoring energy in your body and directly affects your spinal cord.
First, plant your knees and hands on the ground, all fours, making sure that your shoulders align with your wrists and knees align with your hips.
Inhale as you lift your head and buttocks while lowering your stomach. Exhale as you slowly lower your head, curve your spine and lower your tail bone.
Breathe as you do these movements. With each breath, you’ll feel more of a range of motion and stress melting away.
The plank pose is great for strength. To do it, lie down on a Yoga mat and press your hands on it. Make sure your hands are under your shoulders and your toes are touching the mat.
As if you are doing a push-up, lift your whole body off the ground, balancing on your hands which should align with your shoulders and your toes.
Your body should look like a long board. I hold that pose for thirty or more seconds.
For the spinal twist, another favorite pose, sit down in staff pose on your mat. Bend your right knee and position your right foot beside your left outer thigh, touching the floor.
Rotate your torso to the right and place your right hand on the floor behind your tail bone.
With your left arm, wrap it around your right leg. Repeat on the opposite side.
With downward-facing dog, think of the position as making a triangle with your body, and the floor is the bottom.
Plant both feet close together and stick your buttocks up, the highest point of the triangle, and align your hands with your shoulders.
This stretch is great for the spine as well and will ease tension in your shoulder muscles.
Make a ninety degree angle with your right knee. Stretch your left leg back behind you and reach your arms toward the ceiling.
This exercise promotes strength and tones the lower body.
Sit on the floor and position your legs as if they are butterfly wings.
Your feet should be touching each other with your hands on your toes. Both of your knees should be bent.
Slowly lean forward as far as you can and hold the pose.
Think of the Warrior II pose as a lunge but with your arms stretched out, one in front and one behind you, forming a T with your upper body.
This pose addresses balance and flexibility.
Lie down on the floor and bring your feet together, bending both knees, forming a wide diamond shape with your legs. It helps to have a pillow under your knees and lower back for extra support.
Once you’re lying down in that position, rest your arms beside your hips.
The low lunge pose is similar to the Warrior II pose.
Instead of forming a T with your upper body, stretch both hands up and over your head toward the ceiling.
One leg should be on the floor from the knee down and the other should be bent, forming half of a cube shape. This pose stretches your back and inner and outer thighs.
The bridge, I love, and I do this every morning and night after a long work day. The pose will align your spine and hips and addresses strength and balance.
Lie down on the floor or a mat and bend both knees, with feet planted on the ground.
Have your hands at your side and press them into the mat while raising your hips upward, creating a slight diagonal line with your torso, stomach and upper thighs. Keep your shoulders on the ground as much as you can.
Yoga is the best way to manage stress in your life. Stretching and using a Styrofoam roller will release the fascia in your muscles where the tightness and tension are stored.
Doing yoga in the morning is exercising your mind and body simultaneously. Diaphragmatic breathing in and out of poses regulates every system in your body, especially the central nervous system.
Your nervous system needs to be balanced and leveled so you can function at your optimal level.
If you’re functioning on overdrive or auto-pilot constantly, you will be mentally exhausted and drained more frequently, even without realizing it.
Morning Yoga is a resource for resetting all the systems in your body, stimulating blood flow and circulation, and recovering strained or tired muscles. It’s a way of eliminating those toxins we encounter in our environment as well.
Yoga has changed my life and I hope that after you read this, you try out a couple of these poses on your own and see how you feel.

]]>The National Academies of Sciences report shows that NASA’s so-called planetary protection policies form half a century ago are in need of reassessment, especially because of “sample return from, and human missions to, Mars” and missions to bodies “possessing water oceans beneath their icy surfaces,” for example Jupiter’s moon Europa.
Creatively named the Review and Assessment of Planetary Protection Policy Development Processes, the report adds that “such microbes might pose a health risk to the returning crew as well as the public on Earth,” hinting that prolonged exposure to space conditions could see microbes mutate, wreak havoc, and risk the health of billions of people.
Russian scientists have previously proven with an experiment called ‘Biorisk’ that various microorganisms from Earth were able to survive in the harsh conditions of space on the surface of the International Space Station (ISS). It was carried out starting in January 2005 from the Russian segment of the ISS and saw 68 different organisms, including bacteria, insects, vertebrate animal and higher plants, used as test subjects.
The mutated bacteria showed high aggressiveness and resistance to antibiotics on their return to Earth, the Russian report said.
Another concern is that the contamination may affect the assessment of the substances on other planets for the signs of life, in other words, researchers may not be sure if a discovered bacteria is native to a planet, or if it came down with Team Earth. “Soundly framed and executed planetary protection policies will play a critical role in ensuring that space exploration efforts will deliver unambiguous answers about the possibility of life elsewhere in the solar system,” said Joseph Alexander, chair of the committee that wrote the report.
The authors of the National Academies of Sciences report say while these policies have worked well for the last 50 years, times are changing: NASA is about to blast off on more complex space missions than ever before.
A spacecraft will soon jet set to Jupiter’s moon of Europa to hunt for signs of life, and a new rover is set to blast off to Mars in 2020.
Professor of aeronautics at Stanford and one of the lead authors of the report, Scott Hubbard, told the tech and science publication The Verge that the need to update the policies is critical, as the space agency intends to bring samples back to Earth. “NASA is undertaking much more complex science missions than in the past, and at the same time they’re having to operate under cost restraints and schedule restraints,” he said. “These missions bring up all sorts of issues about possible contamination, both going there and bringing samples back.”
Authors of the report say that NASA needs more advice from external experts, like microbiologists and geneticists, about what kinds of microbes are resilient and could cause issues for spacecraft.
The report also claims that NASA should come up with a long-term plan and protocols and missions to ensure that regulations are prepared well in advance. “One of the problems we noted is that these planetary protection requirements tend not to be developed until the mission is already underway or getting started,” Hubbard said.

Dustin Byfuglien is a big problem for Vegas.
The 6-foot-5, 260-pound Winnipeg defenceman can do it all, as the Golden Knights saw up close when he helped the Jets win Game 1 of the Western Conference finals with a goal and an assist.
"We got moving our feet right away," Byfuglien said. "And the ice opened up."
Byfuglien has a powerful shot, as he showed with a slap shot 1:05 into the Jets' 4-2 victory .
The 33-year-old former forward, who played right wing for the Chicago Blackhawks during their Stanley Cup run in 2010, can join a rush on offence in even-strength situations and plays on the power play. The NFL-sized player is nimble enough to skate fluidly and he handles the puck with soft hands. Byfuglien can crunch opponents against the boards or on the open ice with checks and kill penalties with savvy positioning.
In Game 1, he did all of that and more.
"You saw the Dustin Byfuglien spectrum," Jets coach Paul Maurice said. "He can shoot the puck a ton. He can make soft-hand plays and he can be as big and strong as you want out there."
Vegas centre William Karlsson was asked to compare Byfuglien with any other player in the league. And he was stumped.
"He's kind of one of a kind," Karlsson said.
If the expansion Golden Knights can't figure out a way to keep the puck away from Byfuglien and work around him offensively, their inaugural season may not last beyond this series.
Game 2 is Monday night in Winnipeg.
Byfuglien leads the league's defencemen with 15 points and five multi-point games in the playoffs.
"When he is on his game, he is as good as anybody," Vegas coach Gerrard Gallant. "He's a big strong man and can play the game any way you want to play it.
"Buf is a good player, but hopefully we don't give him too many chances to load up like we did [in Game 1] and take that big shot."
The Blackhawks gave Byfuglien a shot to play in the NHL, taking a flyer on the Minnesota native in the eighth round with the No. 245 pick overall in 2003. He played his first full season in the league five years later and had 11 goals and five assists for Chicago during the 2010 playoffs.
Byfuglien didn't get to celebrate the championship for very long because the Blackhawks traded him to less than three weeks after hoisting the Cup. Chicago sent him to the Atlanta Thrashers, who became the Jets, to help manage its salary cap. He has become a three-time all-star with the franchise and a player respected enough on the blue+line to be in the running for the Norris Trophy six times.
Byfuglien, though, got off to a slow start offensively this season with a slump that seems improbable for a player with five goals in 13 playoff games this year. He began the season with a 29-game goal drought and finished with eight goals, his fewest in five seasons.
"He had a helluva year and it was masked by the fact that he didn't score a goal for a long time and didn't generate points," Maurice said. "The question was `What's wrong with Dustin Byfuglien?' And the answer was, `Absolutely nothing,' because our hockey team was winning and he was playing right."
Byfuglien has been businesslike around reporters lately, appearing to be focused on his tasks instead of showing off tricks with a cosmetic tooth he can pop in and out of his mouth with his tongue. When a reporter asked about the Atlanta hat he wore in the dressing room before Game 1, wondering if it was a nod to his season with the Thrashers, he wasn't in the mood to play along.
"The what?" he asked. "I don't even know what hat I got on."
Byfuglien also wasn't interested in comparing the Jets' run to his success with the Blackhawks.
"That was a while ago," he said.
Discussing the challenges of facing Vegas goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury also didn't interest him.
"Get it behind him," he said. "Shoot pucks and hopefully they go in."
His first shot against Fleury found the back of the net, and the blast probably pushed the netting to its limit because it was so powerful.
"That first goal was a bomb," Vegas defenceman Deryk Engelland said.

Lenovo has issued a recall of 5th generation ThinkPad X1 Carbon laptops built prior to November 1 (if you own one, you can check your status here) after reports that the battery could overheat. There haven’t been any fires yet, but Lenovo warns that a fire hazard exists. Machines will be inspected and, if necessary, repaired for free in the recall program. Some 83,500 of the laptops have been sold in the US and Canada.
The cause of the problem? It appears that the laptops literally have a screw loose. An unfastened screw left in the laptops during their manufacturing can damage one of the lithium batteries and cause one of the cells to short out. This causes rapid overheating and failure of the battery, with three systems reported to have failed in the field.
The fix is, accordingly, simple: the unfastened screw will be removed. As Lenovo’s FAQ on the issue states, “Removal of any unfastened screw will eliminate any exposure of the battery to an unfastened screw.” No screw, no problem.

Update: A new high resolution version of the image has been released and we’ve added it below.
There’s a section in the song “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” that describes everyone dancing “in the new old-fashioned way,” and now the upcoming Bumblebee Transformers spin-off movie is putting its own spin on the concept of something being new and old-fashioned at the same time. A fresh photo from the film has emerged that showcases the title Autobot hero in his old-fashioned form as a yellow Volkswagen Beetle…but it’s also new, because we haven’t seen that character as anything other than a Camaro in a live-action Transformers movie yet. (Just go with me on this.)
Take a look at the new photo below, which also includes another look at the film’s human star, played by Hailee Steinfeld.
This will be the first live-action Transformers spin-off movie, and since it’s set in the late 1980s, the fact that Bumblebee is in his original Beetle form – as he was in the original animated series from the same time period – is a cool little callback. This is the first “hero shot” of the character we’ve seen from the film, but we’ve known for a while that Bumblebee would be getting a retro refit this time around since photos of old Beetles emerged from the set this past summer.
Meanwhile, Hailee Steinfeld’s mechanic character Charlie Watson stands beside her newfound friend. She’s sporting a “1980s rock” vibe that goes along with our first look at her character, but this time she’s wearing a vest (which is decidedly less rockin’ than a Motorhead T-shirt). In any case, this photo raises an almost incalculable number of intensely important questions: What is she staring at in the distance? Is she getting in the car, or getting out? What song is blaring on Bumblebee’s radio at this exact moment? WE MUST KNOW. But seriously folks…Transformers fans desperate for a coherent entry in this franchise would probably love the answers to those questions.
Here’s the official synopsis:
On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.
Bumblebee also stars John Cena, Jorge Lendeborg, Jason Drucker, Abby Quinn, Rachel Crow, Ricardo Hoyos, and Gracie Dzienny, and it’s directed by Kubo and the Two Strings filmmaker Travis Knight. The movie arrives in theaters just over a year from now, on December 21, 2018.
