The embassy was asked by the media to comment on Friday’s announcement by the UK police that a small bottle they found in the home of one of the Amesbury poisoning victims contained the infamous Novichok nerve agent.
However, Russian diplomats said that they “cannot check or verify any British statements” because London “refuses to cooperate with us in any way possible” on the issue.
Russia would like the UK to share its data on the nerve agent attacks that targeted former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury last March, and another poisoning in Amesbury in late June, the embassy said. However, it added that they were “almost sure that the British side will not be informing us directly.”
The Russian mission pointed out that both poisoning cases took place “in the vicinity of the secret military chemical laboratory in Porton Down,” which may well lead to the conclusion that “some kind of ‘leak’ from this laboratory might have taken place. This cannot be excluded.”
“We have already demanded that the UK reveal information concerning ongoing research and production of chemical warfare agents in Porton Down,” it added.
The Porton Down chemical laboratory is located some 8km from both Salisbury and Amesbury.
The embassy also criticized the British authorities for asking the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to examine the substance found by the police at Amesbury.
The “independent verification” procedure initiated by the UK is “non-transparent, goes beyond the mechanisms outlined in the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC),” it said.
“This initiative is yet another step towards politicizing the OPCW to the detriment of its reputation,” the Russian mission said.
In late June, the UK and its allies voted to expand the powers of the OPCW, allowing the body to not only investigate alleged chemical attacks, but also to assign blame for incidents. Russia said that it was a “dangerous” development, as the neutral body was being turned into a political tool that will be used by the West to apply pressure on Syria and other dissident states.
On June 30, Charlie Rowley and his Dawn Sturgess were hospitalized after being poisoned at their home in Amesbury with what experts at Porton Down later identified as Novichok nerve agent. Sturgess died a week later, while Rowley’s health has improved. He is no longer in a critical condition, according reports on Wednesday.
In early March, Sergei and Yulia Skripal were found unconscious on the bench in Salisbury after a chemical attack and rushed to hospital. The UK authorities said that a Soviet-designed nerve agent, which they called ‘Novichok,’ had been used against the pair.
This gave London an opportunity to claim that Russia was “highly likely” responsible for the poisoning, and to introduce sanctions against Moscow. However, months later, the UK has yet to provide any convincing proof of Russia’s involvement, and it has turned down all requests for cooperation.
Meanwhile, the Skripals have miraculously recovered from the poisoning, despite Britain calling Novichok a deadly war-grade chemical. Their whereabouts are currently unknown, and Russian diplomats have been denied access to the pair.
The UK authorities say that the incidents in Amesbury and Salisbury are linked, but Professor of Chemistry at Cornell University, Dave Collum, told RT that “it’s impossible to make a connection as there’s been no data presented” to the public to back those claims.
He also reiterated that London’s statements of only Russia being capable of producing the novichok chemical were “totally false.” He described the nerve agent as “a simple compound,” which is actually just “three steps from commercially available materials.”
“I’ve put it on a final exam on my course… and they [the students] all got full credit. It was so easy, I knew none would lose credit because it’s like asking a bunch of bakers to make chocolate chip cookie recipe,” the US chemist said.

Staff at Salisbury District Hospital say that former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, who were found unconscious on a bench in Salisbury on March 4, were initially treated for opioid overdose, a new documentary reveals.
“The evening that Yulia and Sergei were admitted, at that point we were led to believe that they have taken an overdose, so there was no mention of nerve agent poisoning,” Sarah Clark, ward sister in charge of the shift on March 4, told BBC2’s Newsnight in an interview broadcast on Tuesday. “They were needing their support with their breathing and support with their cardiovascular system.”
Some initial reports on the Skripals indicated that emergency services suspected the powerful drug fentanyl may have been involved. The highly addictive synthetic opiate has been linked to a sharp increase in overdoses in the US and has also resulted in dozens of deaths across the UK.
The medical staff was apparently so sure of the drug overdose diagnosis that they did not even consider taking special precaution to protect themselves against potential exposure to the deadly military grade chemical agent, which they were soon convinced caused the ailment of the Skripals.
“At first, when they first came in, there was no indication of the fact that it was a nerve agent. And therefore, we take our normal protection when any patient comes in but would have not at that point taken any extra precaution in terms of protecting ourselves,” Clark said.
Things at the hospital began to slowly change when police told the medical staff on Monday morning that they were dealing with victims of a potential “targeted attack.” Dr. Duncan Murray, the hospital’s senior intensive care consultant, recalled how he discovered the identity of the Skripals at “six o’clock on a Monday morning,” while Cara Charles Barks, chief executive at the hospital, said that only by 10am was the case declared an “external incident.”
While the Skripals were first admitted to the hospital on Sunday evening, it was not until Tuesday that doctors realized they were seeing “symptoms typical of organophosphate” or nerve agent poisoning, the BBC investigation claims. This suspicion arose after Detective Sergeant Nick Bailey, one of the officers who had attended the scene but whose fate was not part of the BBC report, was admitted with “similar” symptoms.
While some of the symptoms exhibited by the Skripals were consistent with World Health Organization guidelines for opioid poisoning, it was not until a helping hand was extended by experts from the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) at Porton Down that the Salisbury medical team finally started treating the Skripals for nerve agent poisoning.
“Whilst a district general hospital laboratory cannot test specifically for a nerve agent, we are able to request tests for the effect of the nerve agent so we can measure anticholinesterase levels and see whether they have been affected. And it was our colleagues in Porton Down that helped us with the testing,” Medical Director Dr. Christine Blanshard said.
From that point on, doctors at Salisbury Hospital began to administer medical treatment, the details of which are kept secret due to medical “confidentiality” concerns. The hospital continued to receive advice from international experts, including the Porton Down chemical weapons research laboratory.
“Clinical decisions were ours, but we would be foolish not to take their advice, which we did. And I think that helped,” intensive care consultant Dr. Jukes noted. “When we began seeing some improvements, it happened a lot quicker than anticipated. Certainly, when you look at these groups of nerve agents, the expectations from the textbooks, the journals suggested a much longer period of recovery.”
Dr. Jukes, who did not initially believe the two would survive, said he was “exceptionally surprised” with the speed of their recovery. In fact, it happened so fast that he cannot easily explain it.
Dr. Murray of Salisbury District Hospital said their recovery is “attributable to the very good, generic, basic, critical care, excellent team care,” and not some magic pill, in addition to “some input from really, really well informed international experts, which very fortunate, some of who have happened to be on our doorstep at Porton Down.”

What has the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) at Porton Down confirmed?
The “military-grade nerve agent” used to poison the double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia on March 4 was confirmed as a strand of Novichok, a family of chemical weapons first reportedly developed in the Soviet Union in the 1970s.
Did it reveal the origin of the substance?
“It is not our job to say where it was manufactured,”said lab chief executive Gary Aitkenhead to Sky News, adding that it requires “extremely sophisticated methods to create, something only in the capabilities of a state actor.”
Could the Novichok have come from Porton Down itself?
In response to accusations that UK itself may have been behind the attack, Aitkenhead said that “there is no way anything like that could have come from us or left the four walls of our facility.” He refused, however, to confirm or deny whether Porton Down keeps its own stocks of the nerve agent.
Does this not contradict earlier statements by UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson?
Johnson appears to have been overemphatic at best, and dishonest at worst when he said that Porton Down was “absolutely categorical” that the nerve agent had come from Russia, after “a guy” at the lab told him that “there’s no doubt” about its source.

So, why is the UK government so adamant about Russia’s involvement?
Aitkenhead suggested that the government “used a number of other sources to piece together conclusions,” implying that the UK’s stance is as much guided by recommendations from its intelligence and police investigation, as from chemical tests on their own.
What next?
The international watchdog OPCW (Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons) is conducting its own independent analysis of the samples from Salisbury provided by Porton Down.
Russia, which denies responsibility for the incident, has demanded full access to the tests conducted by the OPCW and Porton Down, saying it would recognize “only those conclusions of international and national experts that would be based on irrefutable evidence collected in compliance with all procedures of international law.”

Several MPs have retweeted claims that scientists at the British lab investigating the poisoning of ex-spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter are actually struggling to identify the source of the nerve agent used.
Craig Murray, the former UK ambassador to Uzbekistan turned blogger, wrote on his website that scientists at Porton Down, the center responsible for identifying the nerve agent allegedly used in the attack against the Skripals, have failed to find evidence of Russian “culpability.” He said a “well-placed” source in the Foreign Office told him.
Murray added scientists had been “resentful” over the pressure put on them to prove the military-grade nerve agent is of Russian manufacture. The blogger’s comments and concerns were retweeted by Labour MP Chris Williamson, a frequent guest on RT, and the Scottish National Party’s Douglas Chapman.
Wow, if this is true Theresa May has some very serious questions to answer. It would interrsting to see what the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons has to say about this. https://t.co/LUoOs9l6rg

Chapman’s retweet was then posted by QC Jo Maugham.
A separate Murray claim on the Salisbury incident has faced criticism. A chemist hit back at Murray, tweeting at him that it could be possible for scientists at Porton Down to identify a substance they hadn’t seen before, a contradiction of the blogger’s argument.
“Yet now, the British Government is claiming to be able instantly to identify a substance which its only biological weapons research centre has never seen before and was unsure of its existence. ”

Claims that Russia was behind the attack stem from knowledge of the agent – known as Novichok – being developed by the Soviet Union in a covert program unveiled by defectors.
Vil Mirzayanov, a chemical weapons developer, argued only the Kremlin could have the capability to deploy the agent.
Murray’s claims comes after Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn defied critics as he doubled down on his position that more evidence is needed before the UK points the finger squarely at Russia. He said a lack of diplomacy in a “fevered” Parliament atmosphere could lead to “McCarthyite intolerance of dissent.”
“To rush way ahead of the evidence being gathered by the police, in a fevered parliamentary atmosphere, serves neither justice nor our national security.”
He went on: “Labour is, of course, no supporter of the Putin regime, its conservative authoritarianism, abuse of human rights or political and economic corruption. However, that does not mean we should resign ourselves to a ‘new cold war’ of escalating arms spending, proxy conflicts across the globe and a McCarthyite intolerance of dissent.”
