GUEST:
Most investors will tell you about the importance of a well-diversified portfolio and how you should never go all in on any single asset. This is good advice for most of us and makes even more sense in the unregulated cryptocurrency market, where volatility is high and most of the current projects are believed to have a short lifespan. While investing in nascent technologies like blockchain will always carry great risk, there are a couple of measures you can take to help reduce the gambling aspect of it and better manage risk within your crypto portfolio.
When I first started investing in cryptocurrencies, I decided to go all in on Ether, the native currency of the Ethereum blockchain. It made sense to me at the time as it was the technology I had been following the closest and that seemed to have the most going for it. There were big name companies joining the Ethereum Enterprise Alliance, and it had the most developers and the largest user community out there. And when taking into account that almost every ICO out there was building their project on top of Ethereum, the upside seemed massive. What I didn’t realize at the time was that I had also fallen into the trap of becoming a part of the Ethereum community on Reddit and Twitter myself, adding to my already strong confirmation bias.
I then came across Joel Monegro’s (now with Placeholder, back then with Union Square Ventures) article about Fat Protocols, which really resonated with me in explaining how the blockchain tech stack encourages innovation at the protocol layer to a much larger extent than was the case with the Internet. Monegro explained how investing in the few shared Internet protocols like TCP/IP and HTTP had never made a lot of people rich; it was the applications built on top of them that created most of the wealth. However, he said that with blockchain-based protocols, the value of the protocol will always grow faster than the combined value of the applications built on top of it.
The basic idea is that investing in a decentralized application (dapp) token can be compared to investing in a startup company. The chance of failure is high, even more so in the blockchain space, with its many inexperienced, post-ICO, newly rich teams and entrepreneurs. Investing in a protocol token, on the other hand, means you diversify across all applications that will be built on the protocol, drastically increasing your winning chances. This has made it a popular strategy among risk averse crypto investors, myself included, once I realized I was becoming an Ethereum fanboy.
We can use Ethereum to illustrate the concept of fat protocols. There are more than a thousand dapps being built on top of Ethereum right now, and many of them raise funds through an ICO and issue their own token. However, a dapp built on Ethereum has to spend Ether (calculated in Gas), to function at all. So, following Monegro’s thesis, and using Metcalfe’s Law, the demand for Ether is set to increase as more dapps get built and gain real world adoption, appreciating Ether’s value accordingly, while at the same time presenting it as a relatively low risk investment vehicle.
Currently the second largest currency by market cap, many expect Ether to dethrone Bitcoin (whose market dominance is at an all-time low right now) during 2018. It’s also worth noting that, at the time of writing, Ether’s market cap is at around $ 92 billion, while the combined market cap of all tokens built on top of Ethereum, is roughly $ 30 billion, so this certainly seems to support the theory of fat protocols.
The term fat protocols was coined (no pun intended) back in 2016 though, and with a complex blockchain technology stack in constant change, betting on protocol tokens alone doesn’t guarantee you great returns anymore. Because, what is a protocol, really? While most will agree on the definition of the word — being a data exchange standard, a set of rules that defines how unrelated objects can communicate with each other (in our case, nodes on the network) — what decides whether what you’re building is technically a dapp or a protocol? In his article from October last year, Jake Brukhman, cofounder of CoinFund, states that in many cases, it can be both.
Brukhman makes a comparison to the Internet architecture, where HTTP sits above TCP/IP, making HTTP an application of TCP/IP, while at the same time being a protocol for websites and applications built on top of it. Similarly, on a blockchain like Ethereum, we have Ethereum itself as the base protocol. Then there’s an increasing number of other protocols, each serving a different, usually quite specific, purpose. A few examples are IPFS for file storage, Whisper for communication between dapps, and 0x for decentralized token trading. If we look at 0x, it serves as an application of Ethereum while also being a protocol for other dapps and platforms, like MelonPort and Augur among others, which are building (parts of) their service on 0x.
Above: A small selection of the Ethereum stack. Credit goes to Jake Brukhman; I simply adapted one of his images to make it relevant for my example.
A result of the protocol fatness is that everyone wants to extract as much of the value creation as they can. So we have gotten ourselves a currency war, with hundreds of cryptocurrencies and tokens competing for world (or at least industry or vertical) dominance. Many of these small, often open-source, teams are building what they hope will become base protocols, the building blocks that are going to form the new back end of the Internet. Common for all of these teams is the belief that their technology is superior and what everyone else should be building on.
You may prefer to invest in protocols that sit lower in the stack, often referred to as infrastructure projects, or in front-end dapps with a more specific and limited use case. Perhaps you prefer to diversify vertically, in various dapps and protocols living on the same blockchain. Or you may be of the opinion that real diversification only happens when investing horizontally, in different base protocols. The fact is, it’s possible most of these protocols and their blockchains are going to fail, leaving us with a one-blockchain-to-rule-them-all scenario. It’s also possible multiple efforts will succeed and we’ll have a myriad of interoperable chains and protocols (which seems most likely when looking at the current landscape). Both approaches are likely equally risky from an investor point of view.
To add to the uncertainty, you run the risk of investing in a project that seems to fit perfectly within your diversification strategy, only to have it announce, after the ICO, that it’s moving to another blockchain, like Kik is planning to do with its Kin token, moving it from Ethereum to Stellar.
One of the smartest things we can do in this unclear market is step up our own due diligence and base investments on solid project fundamentals. This will put us in a better position to pick the emerging winners than most crypto investors.
Note: None of the above should be considered as investment advice. I own small amounts of various cryptocurrencies, but I’m neither a financial advisor nor an investment professional. I am just a simple holder, hoping that one day, some of the coins in my possession will head for the moon and take me with them.

The largest online platforms have come under intense scrutiny about how their sites were used and abused before the 2016 US presidential election.
But even though investors have coined a convenient acronym for Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix, and Google — FAANG — they’re by no means lumping their risks together.
“The giants that I am more concerned about than Amazon are Facebook and Google,” said David Eiswert, the portfolio manager of the $ 950 million Global Stock Fund at T. Rowe Price, which manages $ 991 billion.
“Apple and Amazon don’t monetize through selling private data,” he said. “Apple sells iPhones; Amazon delivers customer service.”
In November, top lawyers from Facebook, Twitter, and Google appeared before the congressional intelligence committees to answer questions about Russia’s meddling in the 2016 US election. Facebook, for example, had found evidence that fake accounts, most likely run from Russia, bought thousands of ads during the presidential campaign.
So it’s no surprise that these are the companies directly in the crosshairs of regulators.
“You’ve created these platforms, and now they are being misused,” Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California said at the November hearing. “And you have to be the ones to do something about it, or we will.”
In October, senators introduced a bill to require online platforms with at least 50 million monthly viewers to keep a public log of ads bought by individuals or groups that spend more than $ 500 over one year.
“I think Facebook’s EBIT” — earnings before interest and taxes — “margins are too high, and those returns represent a company that is just like a wide-open Wild West: Anybody can come on there and through an automated platform, buy ads, and target whatever they want and spew whatever evil stuff they want to do,” Eiswert said.
Critics are asking why free services like Facebook and Google can’t be regulated like radio or broadcast TV, Eiswert said.
Amazon, which Eiswert describes as a stock every long-term investor should own, is not completely off the hook. Its most prominent critic is none other than President Donald Trump, who has said the company is “doing great damage” to other retailers and making the US Postal Service “dumber and poorer.”
But Eiswert sees Trump’s regulatory influence over Amazon as limited.
Another trait that distinguishes Amazon from the other tech giants, Eiswert said, is that it is constantly investing to grow its business.
“We think there’s potential over the long term to have much higher returns because their dominance increases as they grow,” he said.

Dirk Jeschke, a former portfolio manager at Paul Tudor Jones’ hedge fund firm, is prepping a hedge fund in London for early next year.
Jeschke, 32, is planning a macro fund that will, among other things, emphasize medium- to long-term systematic macro strategies. He plans to launch the fund in the first or second quarter of next year.
Jeschke was a portfolio manager at Greenwich, Conn. based Tudor Investment Corporation from 2015 through May of this year, focusing on a multi-asset class macro strategy.
Before that, he worked in PIMCO’s G-10 rates and FX team, as well as its largest macro hedge fund. He also worked at Morgan Stanley’s quantitative and derivative trading strategies team in Hong Kong.
“My fund will do two things differently: emphasize medium- to long-term systematic macro strategies as well as balance and diversity among those strategies,” Jeschke said in an email to Business Insider.
He added:
“The main requirement for each core strategy is that it has a sound economic rationale going forward and a long history of strong risk-adjusted returns over a full business cycle. Those core strategies generate return streams from a diversified exposure to asset classes, investment styles, trends and market flows. Due to the diversity of the return streams, I believe I can bring them together in a portfolio that balances their ups and downs and that is robust with respect to short-term volatility, liquidity shocks and business cycle turns.”
Another Tudor staffer, Dario Villani, global head of portfolio strategy and risk, is also said to be preparing a new venture, Business Insider earlier reported.

Virtual reality consultancy and testing firm Fishbowl has told UploadVR they have expanded their services to include augmented reality testing. The company produced their first AR usability test with Inkhunter, an application that allows users to see how a tattoo might look on their body before actually putting ink to skin. Describing the reason behind the expansion, CEO Geoff Skow highlighted the difficulties inherent in AR development, “There’s a huge gap between getting an AR app to work in staged environments and having it work for regular users in a real-life setting. Because everyone’s environment is necessarily unique (lighting conditions, surfaces, phone processors, a million other things) it’s absolutely critical for developers to test in as many different settings as possible.”
Skow said Apple’s new augmented reality SDK, ARKit, has triggered a stampede of developers clamoring to make their mark. With a standard SDK to work from, AR developers can now focus on big ideas instead of getting bogged down in minutia like camera calibration. Any would-be app maker can now tackle augmented reality with minimal overhead.
Despite the current boom, Skow says other testing firms are lacking in solutions designed for augmented reality creators. “Unfortunately for developers, the giant incumbents in the crowdsourced mobile user testing space have built solutions for a tap-first world. They can show you where people are tapping when using your app, and even have them think aloud so you better understand their mindset. … But that doesn’t cut it for immersive AR applications, because you’re missing the view of the environment the user actions are taking place in. You’re missing the context. ”
Skow says filming testers can help reach a more complete understanding of the user experience. “We’ve built up a remote testing panel of more than 1,0000 VR/AR enthusiasts across more than 600 cities around the globe. These testers have recorded more than 5,000 hours of split-screen playtests, which developers use to see both what the user is looking at and what they’re doing in real life. This helps them understand where and when users are encountering usability or performance issues.”
ARKit is barely over a month old, and no ARKit applications will hit the app store until IOS11 drops later this year, but Fishbowl is betting big on an augmented reality gold-rush when iPhone owners finally get their hands on ARKit developed apps.

Audi is getting serious about its portfolio of battery-electric models and is set to launch three battery-electric vehicles over the next three years, CEO Rupert Stadler officially confirmed at the 2017 Vienna Motor Symposium. There will be two mid-size crossover models and a more compact premium car. The push to go full electric seems to have put plans to offer a plug-in hybrid model of the Q7 SUV in the U.S. on the back burner, as we reported earlier this year. Here are Audi’s definite future plans for its fully electric e-tron models, in chronological order:
–
Audi e-tron Quattro: Previewed by the e-tron Quattro concept (above) displayed at the 2015 Frankfurt auto show, this crossover will feature a spacious interior, a futuristic cockpit, and high-performance powertrains beginning at more than 300 horsepower. The top model will deliver about 430 horsepower, including a short-term peak of around 500 horsepower. Maximum torque should be around 590 lb-ft. This model will have one electric motor up front and two in the rear, and the top model will be able to reach 60 mph in about 4.5 seconds, with a governed top speed of 130 mph.
–
Based on Audi’s modular longitudinal (MLB) platform and with a footprint similar to that of an A6 but taller, it will come to market in late 2018 as a 2019 model. The base model is likely to be priced starting at around $ 60,000.
–

–
Audi e-tron Quattro Sportback: If you’ve seen the Shanghai auto show concept (above), you have seen a good 80 percent of the final model. This is the Sportback version of the above described e-tron Quattro, and the concept’s looks are extremely close to those of the series production model. This includes the futuristic horizontal taillights stretching across the entire width of the vehicle. But it also includes the tiny camera rearview mirrors, which project the view onto OLED screens. Where legal, they will be offered; other markets get conventional mirrors. The interior will be cleverly differentiated from the e-tron Quattro, much as the Audi A7’s differs from that in the A6. We expect to see the same three-motor powertrain that is fitted in the e-tron Quattro, with peak power of around 500 horsepower for the top-of-the-line model. Pricing of the Sportback will be slightly above that of the regular model, carrying a premium of about $ 5000. It will appear on global markets in 2019 and be sold in the U.S. as a 2020 model.
–
Audi e-tron premium compact: This as-yet-unnamed premium compact car will be slightly bigger than the A3 sedan, and it will be the first Audi based on the Volkswagen Group’s modular electric (MEB) architecture. It’s fitted with two electric motors, one up front and one in the rear; power output in top configuration will be around 300 horsepower, but there will likely be lesser entry-level configurations. A range of around 300 miles is a given. When it comes to market in late 2019 as a 2020 model, we expect an entry price point of less than $ 50K; it will directly target the Tesla Model 3 (if Tesla manages to get it to market by then). A U.S. launch of Audi’s most compact electric has not yet been decided, but it is a strong possibility. For hints about its looks, see the Volkswagen I.D. Crozz (below) and the Škoda Vision E; Audi’s compact electric is a variation on the same theme.

With the MSRP of several Jaguar models now ringing in below the vaunted $ 50,000 mark, there’s more reason than ever to cross-shop British wares or at least notice their presence amid a sea of American, German, and Asian competitors. For the 2018 model year, the automaker’s top seller, the F-Pace, continues its pricing assault on the compact-SUV segment with a new base inline-four-cylinder engine, a new Portfolio trim, and extra safety features.
