Concerns voiced by top Russian officials about the ongoing church row in Ukraine are proof that the institution should not be in the country at all, according to Poroshenko.

“Is it normal when the Kremlin urgently gathers the Security Council, presided over by Putin, with the only issue on the table: How to protect the Russian Orthodox Church in Ukraine?” Poroshenko said on Tuesday. He added that “your church, your troops, your armaments” have no business in Ukraine, and urged them to “go home, back to Russia.”

He also urged the “Ukrainian hierarchs” to hurry up and hold a “unification council” which could lead to receiving the much-awaited autocephaly.

“Ukraine waited for it for the long 1030 years straight after the baptism,” he claimed. The 988 baptism of land, which was back then called Rus’, led to the creation of the Russian Metropolis which later evolved into the Patriarchate, while the very term ‘Ukraine’ did not exist back then.

The canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church, however, has already refused to take part in such a “unification” gathering. Ukraine hosts three Orthodox Churches, yet only one of them – the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate – is recognized by other Churches.

Most Ukrainian clerics recognize its authority, while the government openly endorses one of the schismatic churches – the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kiev Patriarchate. It broke away in the 1990s and boasts its own self-proclaimed ‘patriarch’.

Poroshenko’s statements drew the ire of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which accused the top official of effectively violating the constitution of his own country.

“It’s a completely absurd, ridiculous statement. The Constitution of Ukraine guarantees the protection of the Church, especially this one, which was born on the territory of modern Ukraine, existed there for 1,000 years, and tutored our people,” the press service of the institution said, adding that the Church itself blessed the creation of the independent Ukrainian state back in 1991.

The Orthodox Church has faced a major crisis recently, as the Constantinople Patriarchy moved towards recognition of the independence of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which is a constituent part of the Russian Orthodox Church. Constantinople decided to send its exarchs to Kiev, interfering in the affairs of another Church – which is forbidden – and triggering a bitter row with the Moscow Patriarchate.

The situation in Ukraine is becoming more and more explosive, as it’s being deliberately pushed towards conflict, the director of the ‘Orthodoxy and the World’ web portal, Protoiereus Alexander Ilyashenko, believes.

“I feel that the whole situation is being pushed into the abyss,” Ilyashenko told RT.

The drive of the Ukrainian authorities for autocephaly will not likely be supported by any other Orthodox churches, since it might easily trigger a chain reaction, he warned. Yet, the words of the clergy seem to mean little to Poroshenko and his advisers.

“It’s a precedent case. One would be able to sow the same discord in other churches, in other countries – in Serbia, in Georgia, Romania – anywhere. There are disgruntled people everywhere,” Ilyashenko said.

“There are people who are dissatisfied with the status quo everywhere. They can be encouraged and pushed towards rash moves anywhere. In any country such events are possible.”

Ukraine’s Poroshenko accepts American patrol boats after claim the deal was deliverately stalled https://briefnews.eu/ukraines-poroshenko-accepts-american-patrol-boats-after-claim-the-deal-was-deliverately-stalled/ https://briefnews.eu/ukraines-poroshenko-accepts-american-patrol-boats-after-claim-the-deal-was-deliverately-stalled/#respond Fri, 28 Sep 2018 19:34:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ukraines-poroshenko-accepts-american-patrol-boats-after-claim-the-deal-was-deliverately-stalled/

The US Coast Guard has handed over two patrol boats that it no longer needs to Ukraine. The move is meant to boost Ukraine’s pathetic fleet, but was reportedly stalled for years due to corruption in the government.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Thursday took a break from complaining about Russia to the UN General Assembly in New York and travelled to Baltimore. There he joined Ihor Voronchenko, a career tank troops commander who currently serves as the chief of the Ukrainian Navy, for a ceremony. US Coast Guard Vice Admiral Michael F. McAllister signed over two Island-class patrol boats to Ukraine. A thankful Poroshenko said the American ships would help Ukraine fight Russian “intimidation”.

The two 168-ton ships will probably be a significant boost to Ukraine’s naval capabilities. The country may have received dozens of warships and a robust shore infrastructure during the bitter split with Russia of the USSR’s Black Sea fleet in the 1990s, but years of negligence and underfunding reduced Ukraine’s naval force to a handful of barely-operational warships and a dozen or two of support vessels by the time of the 2014 crisis. And despite a hike in defense spending since then, the state of the Ukrainian Navy leaves much to be desired.

With neither funding nor shipbuilding expertise available, the Ukrainian navy seeks to create a “mosquito fleet” – a force of small boats whose main job is to harass larger Russian warships. In case of an actual armed conflict the boats are meant to attack en mass to overwhelm their target’s defenses and probably cause some damage before being destroyed. A similar approach was adopted, for example, by Iran against American missile destroyers patrolling the Persian Gulf.

Poroshenko’s acceptance speech didn’t mention an alleged conflict of interest, which may have stalled the handing-over of the boats by years. In late March, an investigation by the Ukrainian branch of Radio Liberty/Radio Free Europe reported that Ukraine and the US have been talking about a possible transfer of the boats since at least 2014, but red tape on part of Ukraine prevented any significant progress.

The report alleged that the reason may be President Poroshenko’s ties to a shipyard in Kiev called Kuznya na Rybalskomu. The company produces the Gurza-M patrol boats for the Ukrainian Navy. The RL/RFE reported that the US boats were superior to Gurza-M in terms of coast and capabilities, but their transition would have messed up with securing defense contracts for the president’s shipyard.

Ukraine’s Navy responded to allegations by accusing its authors of distorting reality and aiding Russia by publishing “confidential information of defense nature”. Poroshenko dismissed the report as “fake news” and pledged that the Island-class cutters would soon join the Ukrainian Navy.

It’s not clear however how much longer the transfer process is to take place. Ukraine has to pay over $ 10 million for various services necessary for an actual handover, including retrofitting of the boats, training of the crew, fuel etc. The training process alone would take at least four months.

Drummond and Cushing, the two cutters donated to Ukraine, are the seventh and eighth ships of the class handed over by the US Coast Guard to a foreign power. Earlier similar deals were struck with Pakistan, Georgia and Costa Rica. The boats have been in service in the US since 1985, and according to Vice Admiral McAllister they can be pretty efficient in skilled hands despite their age.

Poroshenko threatens disrespectful Moscow with ‘total destruction’ in gas dispute https://briefnews.eu/poroshenko-threatens-disrespectful-moscow-with-total-destruction-in-gas-dispute/ https://briefnews.eu/poroshenko-threatens-disrespectful-moscow-with-total-destruction-in-gas-dispute/#respond Fri, 09 Mar 2018 01:39:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/poroshenko-threatens-disrespectful-moscow-with-total-destruction-in-gas-dispute/ Russia will face a total annihilation for all its alleged misdeeds and disrespect for international law, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said, amid an escalated dispute between Russia’s Gazprom and Ukraine’s Naftogaz.

“Russia does not respect the law and does not respect the court’s decisions,” Poroshenko complained in what was described as a “late-evening interview” with the Financial Times. The Ukrainian leader apparently referred to the recent decision of the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce, relating to a dispute between the Russian and Ukrainian energy companies.

The Ukrainian leader went on to say that such disrespect of “international law” would result in Russia being “absolutely destroyed.” In an apparent attempt to add weight to his words, Poroshenko recalled that Kiev already filed several “complaints” against Russia to no less than the UN International Court of Justice itself. They, however, brought no consequences so far, nor anything close to the “destruction” so much anticipated by Poroshenko.

The Ukrainian leader also used his interview with the London-based business daily to once again accuse Russia of all kinds of misdeeds, ranging from the “illegal annexation” of Crimea to being an untrustworthy energy supplier. At the same time, he proclaimed Ukraine as “the most reliable supplier of gas” to Europe, adding that Kiev would not “allow” anybody to challenge that fact.

The president’s words about Ukraine being a gas “supplier” came just as the head of the national energy company Naftogaz, Andrey Kobolyev said at the CERAWeek annual energy conference in Houston, Texas, that Ukraine has not produced its own gas since at least the 1970s. The CEO also accused Ukrainian people of over-consuming gas during “select periods” when Russia’s Gazprom was supplying it.

Earlier, Poroshenko called for national unity in lowering gas consumption and enduring freezing temperatures until spring finally arrives. Despite repeated claims that the country has cut its dependency on Russian energy and was now purchasing only “reverse gas” from Europe, Ukraine had to limit its consumption after the Russian energy giant terminated its contract with the Ukrainian company as the two sides failed to come to an agreement.

Gazprom and Naftogaz have been involved in a bitter dispute since 2014. The argument concerned each side’s view on a contract signed in 2009. Gazprom demanded penalties from Naftogaz for insufficient withdrawal of gas and requested payment of the debt for those shipments that had actually been claimed. The Ukrainian company sought compensation for what it called “lost profit” from the lowered transit of Russian gas to Europe.

The dispute was brought to the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce. It initially ordered Naftogaz to pay more than $ 2 billion to Gazprom for the consumed gas. Later, however, it ordered Gazprom to compensate Naftogaz $ 4.6 billion, citing the changes in “market conditions” which do not allow Ukraine to withdraw and consume the agreed volumes of gas.

Gazprom CEO, Alexey Miller, called the decision “politically motivated” and refused to resolve Ukraine’s downward economic spiral at the company’s expense, announcing a withdrawal from all contracts with Ukraine. The Ukrainian authorities, meanwhile, started to seize assets belonging to Gazprom in what they called a “compliance” with the decision of the Stockholm court.

Erdogan struggles to stay awake during press conference with Ukraine’s Poroshenko (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/erdogan-struggles-to-stay-awake-during-press-conference-with-ukraines-poroshenko-video/ https://briefnews.eu/erdogan-struggles-to-stay-awake-during-press-conference-with-ukraines-poroshenko-video/#respond Tue, 10 Oct 2017 10:42:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/erdogan-struggles-to-stay-awake-during-press-conference-with-ukraines-poroshenko-video/

The Turkish president has been caught on camera battling a severe case of drowsiness during a press conference with his Ukrainian counterpart. Recep Erdogan yawned and his head drooped as Petro Poroshenko was speaking.

For a few seconds it seemed that Erdogan had actually nodded off, before snapping out of it when a Turkish journalist addressed him with a question.

In another instance, Erdogan is seen yawning on camera a few times as he tries his best to stay alert. Noticing that his counterpart is battling to stay awake, Poroshenko discreetly taps on the desk to help Erdogan stay focused.

The Turkish president paid a one-day visit to Ukraine on Monday. Before meeting with Poroshenko, he made a brief stop at Victory Square to lay a wreath at a military monument. After that he held a meeting with Poroshenko behind closed doors, which went on to last three hours instead of the allocated 45 minutes.

Ukraine ‘almost reached’ arms supplies agreement with US – Poroshenko https://briefnews.eu/ukraine-almost-reached-arms-supplies-agreement-with-us-poroshenko/ https://briefnews.eu/ukraine-almost-reached-arms-supplies-agreement-with-us-poroshenko/#respond Mon, 26 Jun 2017 01:15:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ukraine-almost-reached-arms-supplies-agreement-with-us-poroshenko/

Kiev has almost reached an agreement with the US about the supplies of “defensive weapons” that could be delivered as early as this year, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko told Ukrainian media.

“As for the defensive agreements, we now have an almost consensual text of the agreement [about the arms supplies],” he said, as cited by the Interfax news agency.

The Ukrainian leader then added that Kiev had been waiting for the visit of the US Defense Secretary James Mattis and expressed his hope that the agreement in question would be signed during this visit.

The Ukrainian leader went on to say that this issue is a top priority for Kiev and the negotiation process is going “very actively.” The president also said that the “issue with the defensive arms supplies might be solved within this fiscal year.”

Poroshenko had discussed this issue with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson during his visit to Washington on June 20.

Kiev repeatedly stressed its need for lethal weapons. In February, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavel Klimkin said that Ukraine “clearly needs” lethal weapons as well as “effective cooperation with the US and NATO.”

“I do not like this differentiation between the lethal and non-lethal weapons. There is a clear definition of a defensive weapon, and we need it,” he said at that time.

In March, the top US commander in Europe also called for sending lethal weapons to the government in Kiev as one of the ways to do more to deter “Russian aggression.”

“I personally believe that we need to consider lethal defensive weapons for Ukraine,” General Curtis M. Scaparrotti, head of the US European Command (EUCOM), told the House Armed Services Committee. He also said that the US should “demonstrate strength in every area” when it comes to dealing with Moscow.

However, in April, Tillerson expressed doubt that the Ukrainian conflict was of interest for US taxpayers. According to the French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault, Tillerson openly questioned why American taxpayers should be concerned about the situation in Ukraine during the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting in Lucca, Italy.

Around 10,000 people have died in eastern Ukraine since the military conflict broke out in Ukraine in spring 2014. Back then, the post-coup government in Kiev sent troops to Donbass to quell the population, which rejected the power takeover in the capital.

Kiev and its Western backers accused Russia of supporting the rebellious republics’ forces in eastern Ukraine. Despite Moscow denying the accusations, the US imposed a series of sanctions against Russia, with the EU following in the American tracks. Moscow has repeatedly stated that Kiev is not fulfilling its obligations by violating the agreed ceasefire and refusing to negotiate with their own people.

Trump to meet with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko — and possibly iron out his stance on Russia https://briefnews.eu/trump-to-meet-with-ukrainian-president-petro-poroshenko-and-possibly-iron-out-his-stance-on-russia/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-to-meet-with-ukrainian-president-petro-poroshenko-and-possibly-iron-out-his-stance-on-russia/#respond Tue, 20 Jun 2017 05:05:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trump-to-meet-with-ukrainian-president-petro-poroshenko-and-possibly-iron-out-his-stance-on-russia/ Peter PoroshenkoUkrainian President Petro Poroshenko is on his way to meet with Donald Trump in Washington this week, with plans to pin down Trump’s stance on Russia.

On June 19, Poroshenko’s press secretary announced that the Ukrainian president had left Ukraine for a working visit to Washington. Trump and Poroshenko will from June 19-20, a source told Kyivpost.com.

The visit precedes Trump’s first meeting with Russian president Vladimir Putin at the G-20 summit on July 7-8.

Since its 2013 pro-Europe revolution ousted then-President Viktor Yanukovych, Ukraine has seen its former territory of Crimea annexed by Russia and a bloody, Russia-supported uprising in the country’s east.

Since Russia’s military entry into Ukraine, the US has put Russia under sanctions and relations between the two super powers have deteriorated. With Trump publically announcing his intention to revisit US-Russian relations upon taking office, Ukrainians have watched with bated breath.

In Ukraine, members of parliament told journalists that Poroshenko hoped to discuss Crimea, Washington’s role in reforms within Ukraine with Trump and the largely ineffective Minsk Protocol that both Russia and Ukraine had signed for an immediate ceasefire back in 2014.

The Ukrainian parliament “has appealed to American Congress to recognize Ukraine as its main ally within NATO along with the need to codify a direct wartime agreement between our countries,” wrote leader of the Ukrainian Radical Party Oleg Lyashko on his Facebook page.

After Trump’s election, both Russia and Ukraine had expressed hopes that the new administration would lead to closer ties between their countries — and, given Trump’s inconsistent views regarding the two countries, have both been disappointed thus far.

“We have no idea if [Trump] will keep his promises, because he can often change his mind overnight,” one Ukrainian official who knew of Poroshenko’s earlier phone calls with Trump, told reporters.
