Wait times for surgery in B.C. have tripled since 2002, say the province’s anesthesiologists, who are urging more collaboration between the government, political parties and health authorities to solve the issue.
]]>UN Under Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs Mark Lowcock called for a humanitarian ceasefire in areas essential to aid supply and infrastructure. Because of the deteriorating situation on the ground, he said, the UN has been forced to revise upward its estimates of 11 million Yemenis on the brink of starvation two weeks ago. Now, 14 million Yemenis face “pre-famine conditions,” relying on food aid for their very survival.
Most of this aid – 80 percent – arrives through the port of Hodeidah. The Houthi-controlled city has been under siege by coalition forces led by Saudi Arabia since June. The Saudis have accused regional rival Iran of arming the Houthis through the port, though Iran denies the allegations.
UK-based NGO Save the Children claims nearly two-thirds (64.5 percent) of Yemenis “don’t know when or if their next meal will come,” warning that those who don’t die of hunger are still at risk of succumbing to disease. Yemen is in the midst of the world’s largest ever cholera outbreak, a situation exacerbated by what many believe to be deliberate targeting of hospitals by coalition forces.
Coalition forces, armed and trained by the US, have come under fire by the international community for raiding non-military targets like hospitals and wedding parties. In August, a Saudi airstrike blew up a school bus, killing 30 children. Still, repeated efforts by anti-war elements in Congress to pass legislation ending US support for the bloody conflict have failed.
The proxy war in Yemen has dragged on since 2015, killing or injuring over 60,000 people in the poorest country in the Middle East. Food prices have increased 68 percent and the currency’s value has depreciated 180 percent. More than 80 percent of the population now lives below the poverty line, and millions of Yemenis have been forced to leave their homes, including half a million in Hodeidah in recent days, according to UN reports.
Lowcock called for an increase of funding and support for aid operations, including an injection of foreign exchange into the economy, in addition to the cessation of hostilities surrounding the port and infrastructure areas.

A study published in The Lancet Thursday found that police killings of unarmed black Americans harm the mental health of the wider black American population, largely because the killings are perceived as a symptom of systemic racism.

As a hairdresser in the world’s second-largest city, he doesn’t make a lot of money and can’t afford his own apartment — a deal breaker for most Chinese bachelorettes who have endless options when it comes to suitors.
Today, China is home to 30 million more men than women, thanks to the decades-long one-child policy — which forced parents to pay fines, submit to abortions and raise children in secret. The government’s heavy hand on this matter was largely deemed by the West to be in violation of human rights. In 2015, a two-child policy was introduced to compensate, but the damage was done: China now faces a labor shortage and a rapidly aging population without enough caregivers, or taxpayers.
History is rife with examples of abusive population control efforts. Eugenics laws in 20th-century America, for example, saw at least 60,000 people in mental institutions sterilized in a bid to weed out “criminality, feeblemindedness and sexual deviance,” according to Alexandra Minna Stern’s Eugenic Nation: Faults and Frontiers of Better Breeding in America. In fact, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld in its 1927 Buck v. Bell decision the legality of involuntarily sterilizing patients with mental disabilities, which has never been overturned.

But the 7.6 billion-strong global population is expected to hit 9.8 billion by 2050. Greater numbers compute to fewer resources for everyone to share. Food security is a big concern, as is environmental degradation. According to the World Wildlife Fund, more than half the global population of wild animals was killed off between 1970 and 2010, including 76 percent of freshwater wildlife. Widespread poverty is another worry, especially given that birth rates are higher in developing countries.
So is it time for all countries to turn to drastic population control in order to sustain life on Earth, or is it a violation of human rights, no matter what?
China first implemented its one-child policy law in 1979, aiming to curb its burgeoning population and conserve resources. The costs of the policy were high — approximately 20.7 million people were sterilized and 14.4 million women received abortions in 1983 alone, according to 2016 research in the journal Studies in Family Planning. As a society that largely favored sons back then, female fetuses were more commonly aborted, and the policy is estimated to have prevented 400 million births in China overall. Three years of the new two-child law has done little to compensate. The labor and caretaking needs aside, there’s an even sadder prospect: For these parents, “some of their sons will never have the chance to marry,” says Lihong Shi, author of Choosing Daughters: Family Change in Rural China.
But government measures aren’t always so effective. In 1975, Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi responded to accusations of corruption by declaring a state of emergency. Her son Sanjay used this distraction as a means for introducing radical population controls. Roughly 8 million men were sterilized in 1975, but this did little to dwindle India’s population growth. Poor women simply continued having babies, and India is expected to surpass China as the most populous country in the world by 2024.
So what can be done to effectively address our planet’s dwindling resources and degrading climate? In this case, those bumper stickers and T-shirts might be right: The future is female. Project Drawdown, a coalition on climate solutions, found that the combination of family planning among women and educating girls about career and income opportunities has the most potential, not only to slow population growth but also to reduce greenhouse gas emissions this century. “Once women have more education and earn an income, they decide to have fewer children,” Shi advises.
Educating and empowering women just might save us all.
What do you think? Do we need to start having fewer babies — and is it the government’s responsibility to force us? Let us know via email or in the comments below.

The UK cities with the oldest population have been revealed in a new study by The Centre for Cities.
It has found that people who live in cities are becoming younger, with the average age being 38 years old.
In 1996, people living in cities who were over the age of 65 was at 51 per cent, which has since fallen to 46 per cent in 2016.
But where is the city with the oldest population in the UK?
According to the BBC, Blackpool came out on top of the list, with an average age of 43.2 years old.
This was closely followed by Worthing (43 years old), Bournemouth (42.8 year old) and Southend (42.2 years old).
All of the oldest cities are also found on the coast, with a high amount of those who have retired.
Cities which age the quickest are also destinations that have struggled economically which sees young people leave in search of career prospects, and towns which are relatively new as people who moved there begin to age.
In contrast, cities with the youngest ages were Slough (33.9 years old), Oxford (34.4 years old) and Luton (35.1 years old).
The youthful locals are due to a number of reasons including high birth rates and university students.
Thankfully, the most expensive city in the world isn’t in the UK, with Singapore being named the worst for 2018.
London doesn’t even make the top ten, with other destinations such as Paris, Zurich and Hong Kong takes the top spots.
DOCTORS are struggling to cope with rising demand, an ageing population and rock bottom morale as the NHS is pushed to its limit, a damning new survey reveals. Research by the Royal College of Physicians has laid bare a system in chaos with 64 per cent of doctors believing patient safety has deteriorated over the past year.![]()
Experts from across the NHS agree with the findings, saying that without urgent investment patient safety is at risk.
More than 1,500 doctors across England, Wales and Northern Ireland responded to a survey suggesting the crisis in care has reached its nadir.
Responses to the RCP NHS Reality Check Update 2018 show 84 per cent think the workforce is demoralised while 47 per cent say they administered lower-quality care over the past year – 10 per cent higher than last year
Eight in 10 are worried about the ability of the NHS to deliver safe patient care in the next 12 months.
One doctor responding to the survey said: “Staff simply cannot deliver what is expected of them under current circumstances. We are not robots. We are human beings with limits.
“I cried on my drive home because I am so frustrated and distraught at the substandard care we are delivering.”
Professor Jane Dacre, President of the RCP, said: “It is extremely worrying and depressing that our doctors have experienced an even worse winter than last year, particularly when so much effort was put into forward planning and cancelling elective procedures to enable us to cope better.
“We simply cannot go through this again – it is not as if the situation was either new or unexpected. As the NHS reaches 70, our patients deserve better.
“Somehow, we need to move faster towards a better resourced, adequately staffed NHS during 2018 or it will happen again.”
The RCP has tabled a series of recommendations including making the UK more accessible and attractive to doctors from other countries and called on the Government to relax visa restrictions for the healthcare workforce.
It also wants funding for health and social care to match growing patient need and has demanded more investment in public health initiatives in an effort to reduce that need.
The findings come a week after latest performance data showed just 76.9 per cent on patients in major emergency departments are seen within four hours while bed occupancy last month stood at 95 per cent.
Prof Helen Stokes-Lampard, Chair of the Royal College of GPs, said: “We have huge empathy with our hospital colleagues and we know GPs around the UK would echo their sentiments around increasing workload, and concerns for patient safety.
“Our NHS is operating under immense pressures and we’re sure that everyone working in the health system can relate to this report in one way or another.
“The combination of a depleted workforce, intense workload and chronic underfunding has left our health service on the brink, putting both staff and patient wellbeing at risk.
“In general practice alone, our workload has risen by at least 16 per cent over the last seven years, but investment in our service has not risen at the same pace – something surgeries up and down the country are now feeling on a day-to-day basis.”
GUEST:
One of the fastest-growing regions in the U.S., Charleston, South Carolina is now the No. 1 mid-sized metro for millennials, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. As of 2016, the metro area was growing at three times the rate of the U.S. population.
Often among the 34 new residents Charleston welcomes each day are venture capitalists and real estate developers, who are drawn to Charleston for a chance to participate in a fast-growing economy, while living in a more affordable coastal hub. These change agents have helped shaped Charleston into an emerging location for startup activity, and its tech community offers lessons for other cities on how to capitalize on an influx of new residents.
VentureBeat’s Heartland Tech channel invites you to join us and other senior business leaders at BLUEPRINT in Reno on March 5-7. Learn how to expand jobs to Middle America, lower costs, and boost profits. Click here to request an invite and be a part of the conversation.
The seeds for Charleston’s startup community were sown 26 years ago, when nonprofit software company Blackbaud made the move from New York to Charleston. Since Blackbaud planted itself in Charleston, the region has welcomed more than 250 additional tech companies and 11,000 tech workers. (Disclosure: Blackbaud is an investor in Charleston Open Source.)
The game-changing moment for Charleston’s tech community was the 2001 launch of the Charleston Digital Corridor, a city-backed initiative to attract and grow technology startups. To date, the Corridor has launched more than 80 startups, including Blue Acorn, GoodDoneGreat (acquired by corporate social responsibility platform YourCause), and PeopleMatter (acquired by hiring platform Snagajob). Soon, the Corridor’s resources were attracting startups from outside the region, like Echovate, a “people analytics” software firm that chose Charleston over cities like Raleigh, Austin, and Boston.
Since then, the Charleston tech community has continued to invest in accelerator programs and pitch competitions to help take startups to the next level. Starting in 2014 with just 20 members, Charleston Women in Tech now has a membership of 1,500 members and was one of only four all-women’s groups to receive an invitation to the first-ever White House Tech Meetup in 2015.
There’s also the nonprofit Harbor Entrepreneur Center, which, four years after its 2014 launch, has graduated more than 30 groups of aspiring entrepreneurs. Last year, Charleston also welcomed a new pitch competition from local startup Launchpeer, which grants winners a $ 50,000 investment and free access to Launchpeer’s developers, designers, and VC connections once the company relocates to Charleston.
These days, Charleston companies are attracting more sizable investments than in years past — like machinery software company Atlatl, which raised $ 10 million in 2015. In the past five years, there have been more than five major exits by Charleston companies.
In 2017, Charleston’s venture capital ecosystem reached a new milestone with the establishment of Good Growth Capital, a $ 20 million venture capital fund dedicated to startups from Charleston and the Southeast. The fund was started by Amy Salzhauer and David Mendez, both seasoned investors who, like so many others, moved to Charleston from New York and Boston, respectively, to raise their families. The firm has invested in several Charleston companies since its inception, including Questis, an enterprise-level financial platform and PT On Demand, a private pay platform for physical therapists.
The rise of tech in Charleston has also reshaped the community as a whole and inspired substantial real estate growth. This trend was spearheaded by Steve Zoukis, who moved to Charleston to retire after a successful career in New York real estate. Noticing that Charleston’s startups were starting to outgrow the confines of Charleston’s historic downtown, Zoukis and his business partner, S.C. native Michael Wooddy, invested $ 65 million into an eight-acre tech and creative district with two developments: Half Mile North and Pacific Box & Crate.
Modeled after the amenity-laden campuses of Silicon Valley, these developments are transforming the city’s Upper Peninsula, an area once home to warehouses and mechanic garages. Automated bookkeeping company Ceterus is one of dozens of companies that have migrated to the Upper Peninsula. After moving to Charleston from Michigan three years ago, Ceterus has attracted $ 10.2 million in funding.
As tech in Charleston evolves, the region faces new hurdles. Charleston’s next big challenge is attracting the volume of talent necessary to sustain its growth, an issue familiar to many growing tech communities. Our organization, Charleston Open Source, is a collaborative effort by Charleston tech firms, working to address this problem. The Charleston Regional Development Alliance also recently launched the Charleston Community Guide to help businesses and talent find their place.
Today, Charleston is home to scores of innovative tech companies in industries like real estate, HR, cybersecurity, health care and ecommerce. The growth of Charleston’s tech community illustrates the importance that today’s entrepreneurs place on an affordable, vibrant lifestyle that is often not found in places like Silicon Valley and New York.
David Ginn is the president and CEO of the Charleston Regional Development Alliance (CRDA). He has been with the CRDA since its inception, serving as the organization’s executive vice president and project director before being named president and CEO in 2000. In 2016, CRDA launched Charleston Open Source, a partnership with local tech companies that is designed to attract and retain tech talent in Charleston.
