Cat Chambers, Reef Break‘s pro surfer and grifter-turned-fixer, is on the run while yet tackling her toughest case yet — to clear her own name — as ABC’s summertime escapade comes to a close on a special night, this Friday at 9/8c.

Set in Nimitz Bay, a community on the fictional U.S. territory of Reef Island, Reef Break stars Poppy Montgomery as the aforementioned Cat, who heading into the finale was tricked into helping spring onetime cohort Doug O’Casey out of the clink. Now, Cat is on the lam, believed to have returned to her criminal ways.

TVLine presented Montgomery with some of our burning questions (Is she doing any of her own surfing? Why not let Grant Bowler use his real-life accent? Where did this show come from??), and invited her to tease the finale’s many cliffhangers — which, if France cooperates, could be resolved in a possible Season 2.

TVLINE | What is the Reader’s Digest version of the origin of this show? Because when ABC announced it for their schedule, it seemed to come out of nowhere.
Well, I sort of had this idea for a while about a surfing badass criminal chick on a tropical island. We pitched it and sold it to France, and then ABC Network heard about it and picked it up and suddenly it was 13 episodes, and off we went.  It was pretty wild.

TVLINE | It always took place in a fictional U.S. territory where cars apparently have steering wheels on either side?
Exactly. We made up this island that was somewhere in the South Pacific, but a US territory. We wanted to make it fictional so that we didn’t have to deal with any real baggage or politics of an island that existed. We wanted to create a world where we could almost do anything. It’s a bit like Fantasy Island.

TVLINE | Talk about filming it in Gold Coast, Queensland. What did that mean for you, as an Australian? It must have been a dream.
I mean, it literally was. I love surfing. I love tropical islands. I love riding jet skis and boats too fast. It was perfect. And I got to play a thief, which is far more in sync with my personality than playing a cop. I’m much more of a criminal than I am a cop-type, I think.

Reef BreakTVLINE | That’s the sense I get watching the show, that this must be among your all-time favorite roles. Like you said, you’re edgy, you’re sexy, you’re flirty, you’re funny, you’re smart….
It’s exactly what I wanted to do. We wanted it to be a wink, and a kind of “TV beach read” for the summer. It’s fun and a bit fantastic. It’s not meant to be heavy or win Emmys. It’s mean to be a sort of homage to all of the shows that I loved that I used to watch in Australia 10 years after you got them in America. [Laughs] But you never got to see girls. I was a young surfer in Australia and I would watch these guys drive fast cars and surf and everything, and I was like, “Why aren’t there any women doing that?” I really can’t think of another female surfer on television ever.

TVLINE | Like, maybe one of Charlie’s Angels surfed when they went undercover or something?
Yeah, or you had Gidget on that giant board. It was never a fierce competitive surfer, and the women in female surfing are badass and I think they need to be represented.

TVLINE | Along those lines, to what extent have we seen you actually surf on the show? I’ve been doing some freeze-framing and can’t quite tell.
Oh, none of the big waves are me. None of the standup. That’s my amazing stunt double, Angie. I got a black eye when I was surfing here in Malibu right before we started filming and they were like, “Nope, you’re not going to surf on any wave. It’s too much of a risk.” The other thing is, truly, I’m not that good. Angie’s amazing, she is truly fierce. She can do flips and all of that in the air. I’m deeply mediocre when it comes to surfing.

TVLINE | And as far as Cat the skateboarder a few weeks back, I called shenanigans.
I did pop it and catch it! I did the flip at the end. But I couldn’t do [those tricks] on a skateboard. I’d kill myself!

Reef BreakTVLINE | I find the casting of Ray Stevenson interesting and refreshing, because here’s this mountain of a man with salt-and-pepper hair pulled back into a ponytail. And you don’t see guys like that on TV. I feel like this is a guy who has lived a life.
Yeah. We wanted him to have that sort of Russell Crowe, brutish feel to him, and Ray was the perfect guy for it.  He’s like a father figure, in a lot of ways, to Cat, who has daddy issues, clearly. She married the father figure in her life and we wanted that to be real. Then you’ve got Des[mond Chiam as Wyatt], who’s literally the opposite. I mean, he looks about 22. He’s beautiful. Then we’ve got Rob Collins, who’s playing Doug O’Casey…. In the finale, there’s a lot of stuff with Cat and Doug. That’s a love triangle situation that kind of reveals itself in the last two episodes.

TVLINE | Wouldn’t that would make it a square at this point, a rectangle?
And then it veers off again. It might be a hexagon, because Jake is also sleeping with Ana Dumont, the governor. There’s a lot of cross-pollinating going on!

Reef BreakTVLINE | Petra is totally your long-lost daughter, right? A kid Cat put up for adoption or something?
That’s what we should do! That is not a bad idea. You’re brilliant, actually, because we’ve been talking about that. That’s so funny.

TVLINE | I thought it was a bit mean to have Grant Bowler, a Kiwi, on the show, there in Australia, surrounded by what has to be dozens of locals, and make him speak with an American accent.
We never wanted it to look like we were shooting in Australia, unlike Harrow, which is set in Australia. We wanted to show an American territory. But Grant slips his accent in and out there. He has kind of a combo accent.

Reef BreakTVLINE | What else can you tease about the finale on Friday night?
Like I said, there are quite a lot of surprises between Cat and her supposed nemesis, Doug O’Casey. Someone goes missing, and someone gets kidnapped…. There’s a lot going on. There are a lot of cliffhangers and it’s a bit of a wild ride.

TVLINE | Are any lives in jeopardy as the season comes to a close?
Oh, yeah. Like five. There are a lot of lives in jeopardy, I will just say that. Like a lot. I’m not sure how we’re going to deal with it all in Season 2.

TVLINE | What’s in it for ABC to renew Reef Break? If the numbers haven’t been huge, what else makes it attractive to them to renew this?
You know, I think we’ve got to take a look at the programming of it; there were so many preemptions and blackouts that it’s hard to get a real read on what the numbers were. Also, you get a lot of bang for your buck on this show, meaning it looks beautiful and we are doing it very “efficiently” when it comes to the price. But I also think it’s one of those shows that, given the right exposure, who wouldn’t enjoy it? It’s a fun ride. I think it’s just got to find it’s legs a little. And it’s an international co-production, so once it airs in France, we’ll get a real sense of what it looks like. If it’s a monster hit in France…

TVLINE | Oh, so you’ll be dubbed.
It’s the same Without a Trace an Unforgettable dubber. I’m telling you, she sounds exactly like me and it looks like her words match my mouth even though she’s speaking French and I’m speaking English. I have yet to meet her but I’m kind of in awe of her.

Single Parents Video: Angie and Poppy Talk Sleepovers (Adult and Otherwise) https://briefnews.eu/single-parents-video-angie-and-poppy-talk-sleepovers-adult-and-otherwise/ https://briefnews.eu/single-parents-video-angie-and-poppy-talk-sleepovers-adult-and-otherwise/#respond Tue, 02 Oct 2018 20:01:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/single-parents-video-angie-and-poppy-talk-sleepovers-adult-and-otherwise/

When you’re a single mom, sleepovers can be both blessing and curse. Allow Single Parents‘ Poppy and Angie to explain.

In this exclusive sneak peek at Wednesday’s episode (ABC, 9:30/8:30c), the women discuss how the nights that their kids spend at friends’ houses allow for the moms to have a little co-ed social time  — aka rare opportunities for romance… or, at the least, sex. But even though Angie’s got a co-worker-with-benefits named Owen (played by Champions‘ Andy Favreau), the clip shows her explaining to Poppy why sleepover nights, especially when Graham is involved, aren’t all they’re made out to be.

But does the problem really lie with little Graham, Poppy wonders, or with Angie herself?

Elsewhere in the episode, Douglas hosts the kids’ weekly Saturday-night sleepover, which Will sees as his chance to bond with the older man. (You can guess how into that idea Douglas might be.) And Poppy helps Miggy figure out what he wants to be when he grows up.

Press PLAY on the video above to hear the moms talk about their extracurricular activities — and to get a glimpse of Angie’s workplace hookup.

US money to support Afghan irrigation ‘helped’ poppy cultivation – watchdog https://briefnews.eu/us-money-to-support-afghan-irrigation-helped-poppy-cultivation-watchdog/ https://briefnews.eu/us-money-to-support-afghan-irrigation-helped-poppy-cultivation-watchdog/#respond Fri, 03 Aug 2018 12:22:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-money-to-support-afghan-irrigation-helped-poppy-cultivation-watchdog/ US counternarcotics policy in Afghanistan not only failed to reduce the notorious opium production, but also contributed to increased poppy cultivation due to Washington’s funding of irrigation projects, a new report said.

The US spent some $ 8.62 billion on counternarcotics efforts in Afghanistan in 2002-2017, a report from Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), the US government authority which oversees Afghanistan reconstruction, states. Despite these enormous 15-year-long efforts, the war-shattered country still continues to be the world’s largest opium producer. Plus opium poppy remains the “largest cash crop” in Afghanistan.

“Our analysis reveals that no counternarcotics program led to lasting reductions in poppy cultivation or opium production,” the document states, noting that “eradication efforts” in the country had no lasting impact. In addition, alternative development programs which often were “too short-term”, failed to provide sustainable alternatives to poppy, “and sometimes even contributed to poppy production,” it stresses.

United States Agency for International Development (USAID) mainly focused its efforts on “large-scale, short-term interventions” which attempted to replace poppy with another crop.

Yet, the majority of these initiatives didn’t give a clear assessment “of how program activities contributed to reductions in opium production,” SIGAR assumes. “Some projects, for example improvements to irrigation systems, even contributed to increased poppy cultivation,” the document notes.

According to SIGAR, anti-narcotics efforts failed to reduce the drug-related threats to Afghanistan “in a meaningful way.” The sum of all opium seizures from 2008 through March 2018 stood at 5 percent of the opium produced in 2017 alone, the explosive figures from the watchdog reveals.

SIGAR’s findings are far from being the first that question US strategy in Afghanistan. Back in 2016 the watchdog revealed that the US Defense Department squandered $ 6 million airlifting nine rare, blond male goats from Italy into Afghanistan. The goal was to “bolster the cashmere industry” in the war-ravaged country.

In addition, since 2012 Washington ‘lost’ some $ 9.7 million in assets in Afghanistan because of the army’s negligence, the Inspector General of the US Department of Defense revealed in 2017, adding that enemy troops might even have used the resources against US troops.

Also in 2017, the US Agency for International Development (USAID) claimed that its mission failed to report results from 91 percent of Afghanistan Reconstruction Trust Fund (ARTF) contributions in its 2013-2015 annual reports. USAID provided Afghanistan with $ 1.5 billion.

Despite the US-led campaign in Afghanistan, which has been going on for nearly 17 years, Taliban militants still maintain a significant presence there. From 2001 to mid-2016, around 104,000 people, including 31,000 civilians have been killed in the war, data from the Costs of War Project said.

Kingsman 2 Golden Circle: Poppy Delevingne strips to red underwear in X-rated sex scene https://briefnews.eu/kingsman-2-golden-circle-poppy-delevingne-strips-to-red-underwear-in-x-rated-sex-scene/ https://briefnews.eu/kingsman-2-golden-circle-poppy-delevingne-strips-to-red-underwear-in-x-rated-sex-scene/#respond Sat, 23 Sep 2017 15:52:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kingsman-2-golden-circle-poppy-delevingne-strips-to-red-underwear-in-x-rated-sex-scene/

The X-rated moment sees the actress and model, 31, peeling down to racy red underwear before an attention-grabbing CGI-assisted shot gets very intimate indeed.

Egerton’s character Eggsy is seen being tasked with placing a red tracker on Delevingne’s character – in a very, very intimate part of her body.

What follows is a scene set at Glastonbury where his finger is tracked down her body and then inside it.

It made Egerton so uncomfortable that Delevingne’s husband had to act as a ‘hand double’.

Egerton said in an interview with ScreenRant: “In this one, I’m in the shot and I said to Matthew [director] ‘I’m not comfortable doing this’.

“So it’s not my hand – it’s Poppy [Delevingne]’s husband’s hand. He saved the world.

“It’s what Matthew does, it’s his signature thing. He likes to do something that shocks.

“In Kick-Ass it was Chloe Grace Moretz saying the C-word, in Kingsman 1 it was the bum shot of the Swedish princess, and in this one it’s the thing.”

He added: “And, you know, it’s not to everyone’s tastes, but it certainly gets people talking.

“All it is is explicitly showing what Bond alludes to and says in a double entendre kind of way.”

For all its big talking points, however, the action-comedy has received slightly less favourable reviews than its predecessor.

It’s facing It at the box office this weekend.

Police stumble on $500mn opium poppy field in North Carolina https://briefnews.eu/police-stumble-on-500mn-opium-poppy-field-in-north-carolina/ https://briefnews.eu/police-stumble-on-500mn-opium-poppy-field-in-north-carolina/#respond Fri, 26 May 2017 22:06:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/police-stumble-on-500mn-opium-poppy-field-in-north-carolina/

Undercover deputies in Catawba County, North Carolina stumbled on a field of opium poppy plants while conducting a separate investigation. The property owner, Cody Xiong was charged with manufacturing and trafficking opium, both felonies.

An undercover sheriff deputy was at Xion’s property conducting a warrantless “knock and talk,” following up on a tip about another matter.

Xiong opened the door, saw the investigator on his porch, and immediately confessed.

“I guess you are here for the opium,” Xiong said, according to the Washington Post.

The investigator wasn’t, but he was intrigued. Behind Xiong’s home investigators discovered a field of poppies with its bulging seed pods planted in tidy rows and obscured by trees.

The poppies will have to be weighed to determine the exact value of the haul, but authorities estimate there were about 2,000 pounds of poppies in all, valued at an estimated half-billion dollars. Police also confiscated multiple firearms and ammunition.

“The poppy plant does produce opium,” Catawba County Capt. Jason Reid told WSOC TV. “We have some plants that have scored, which is allowing the drug itself, the opium, to pour out of the poppy plant.”

“Poppy plants in Catawba County and North Carolina is something new to the area, and they’re planted in rows of other vegetables being grown here. He knew what he was growing,” Reid said.

The farm was well hidden at a dead-end gravel road in the rural foothills, forty miles from Charlotte.

It took 10 deputies and SBI agents to pull up the field of poppies.

“It was out there,” Reid told the Washington Post. “Only residents know that it is out there at the end of the road. It wasn’t something you could just ride by.”

Reid’s investigators think the plants were being grown and harvested and then shipped elsewhere to be turned into heroin.

Xiong was charged with manufacturing a Schedule II drug and trafficking in opium, both felonies. He was arrested and released on $ 45,000 bail. He could not be reached for comment and it’s unclear if he has a lawyer.

The investigation into Xiong’s operation now involves DEA agents.

The sap from the seed pods of opium poppies is extracted after slitting the bulb, according to a PBS “Frontline” story on the drug trade. Then, the jellylike fluid can be combined with other chemicals to produce a range of opiates including morphine, codeine and heroin.

There are many varieties of poppies, often distinguished by their bright flowers; among them, the opium poppy, or Papaver somniferum – the only one that’s illegal to grow.

Claremont, where authorities made the bust, has a population of roughly 1,400 people, according to the census. It is about an hour’s drive northwest of Charlotte, the state’s largest city.

‘I guess you’re here about the opium’: Police find $500 million in poppy plants by accident in North Carolina https://briefnews.eu/i-guess-youre-here-about-the-opium-police-find-500-million-in-poppy-plants-by-accident-in-north-carolina/ https://briefnews.eu/i-guess-youre-here-about-the-opium-police-find-500-million-in-poppy-plants-by-accident-in-north-carolina/#respond Wed, 24 May 2017 20:26:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/i-guess-youre-here-about-the-opium-police-find-500-million-in-poppy-plants-by-accident-in-north-carolina/ Afghanistan opium poppy heroinREUTERS/Goran Tomasevic

CLAREMONT, N.C. (AP) — A field of poppy plants that could be used to make opium was discovered in North Carolina and had an estimated value of $ 500 million, a sheriff says.

Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid said the only other opium poppy plant field found in the U.S. this year was in California.

The acre (nearly half a hectare) of poppy plants were in rows, similar to how corn would be planted, in a field behind a home.

“One of our narcotics investigators came to the house looking for something else. When he knocked on the door, the guys said ‘I guess you’re here about the opium,'” the sheriff said.

The sheriff’s office says Cody Xiong was arrested and charged with manufacture and trafficking by possession. It’s unclear if he has a lawyer.

Officials don’t think opium was being made on the property.

“The plants are being harvested here, and sent somewhere else where the opium is being produced from the plant,” Capt. Jason Reid said told WBTV.

David Giuntoli, Poppy Montgomery to Lead CBS' Mission Control Drama Pilot https://briefnews.eu/david-giuntoli-poppy-montgomery-to-lead-cbs-mission-control-drama-pilot/ https://briefnews.eu/david-giuntoli-poppy-montgomery-to-lead-cbs-mission-control-drama-pilot/#respond Mon, 13 Mar 2017 23:59:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/david-giuntoli-poppy-montgomery-to-lead-cbs-mission-control-drama-pilot/

Grimm vet David Giuntoli and Unforgettable star Poppy Montgomery are headed to space.

The duo will headline CBS’ drama pilot Mission Control, from sci-fi novelist Andy Weir (The Martian), our sister site Deadline reports.

The potential series centers around the next generation of NASA astronauts and scientists as they juggle both their personal and professional lives during a critical mission with no margin for error.

Giuntoli — who is currently wrapping up a six-year run as homicide detective Nick Burkhardt on NBC’s Grimm — will play Stevenson, an astronaut and the mission’s commander. Montgomery’s role as Julie, the mission’s flight director, reunites the actress with the Eye network, where she starred in Unforgettable, Without a Trace and last year’s comedy pilot Furst Born.

Giuntoli and Montgomery join the previously cast Nestor Serrano (The Last Ship) and Levi Fiehler (The Fosters), who play the Johnson Space Center’s director and an intense “propeller head” who thinks in computer code, respectively.

Charles Eglee (Hemlock Grove, Dexter) and Simon Kinberg (Designated Survivor, The Martian) will serve as executive producers on the project.
