The Duchess of Sussex was spotted on the grounds of the Berkshire polo club with her husband Prince Harry, 33, who played polo himself there yesterday Making a change from the modest, feminine dresses Meghan has been spotted in recently at public engagements, she took a day off from dresses to wear a relaxed ensemble. The outfit was typical of Meghan’s chic, tailored style before her May wedding to Prince Harry, with some speculating she had left behind her old style all together. Looking effortlessly chic, the former actress wore a crisp white shirt which she wore buttoned down with the sleeves rolled up. An unusual choice for the boiling heat, Meghan paired the oversized blouse with a pair of black skin-tight cigarette trousers. Another break from her preened, more formal looks, the Duchess wore a pair of plain black ballet pumps as she made her way through the polo club’s lawns. She wore a stylish Panama hat on her head, which she was also spotted wearing yesterday at the same polo club. Meghan is a big fan of the Panama style, having worn the $ 65 Madewell x Biltmore hat on numerous occasions, often featuring in her Instagram snaps before she shut down her account. Shielding her eyes from the bright sun, Meghan wore a pair of elegant oversized sunglasses. She accessorised the minimalist outfit with a over the shoulder clutch bag, casually slung across her body. Harry joined his wife in her casual look, himself wearing a simple grey T-shirt. The flame-haired prince’s outfit is a far cry from his full polo get up which he sported yesterday, complete with boots, tight white jeans and a polo shirt. It seems married life is suiting Meghan well, looking effortlessly happy and she smiled and chatted with friends at the prestigious polo club. Yesterday, Meghan’s outfit was very different, possibly paying tribute to her late mother-in-law Princess Diana, ahead of her birthday today. Joined by her close friend tennis star Serena Williams and her husband Alex Ohanian, Meghan wore a weather-appropriate summery shirt dress. Looking happy and relaxed, she wore the £299 Shoshanna dress and she cheered on Harry. The Ashland Sleeveless Belted Gingham Eyelet Dress, which has currently sold out, retailed for £299, a fraction of the price of Meghan’s usual pricey ensembles. With temperatures soaring to 27 degrees, Meghan’s A-line midi dress had open eyelet detailing, a tied belt at the waist and a wide, open collar, which Meghan wore buttoned down. On her feet the Duchess wore a pair of boho brown strappy sandals, tying above the ankle. The “Grear” sandals are £185 and from designer Sarah Flint, currently still in stock.

Just a few years ago, the various marques of the Volkswagen Group competed in a wide array of top-level motorsports. But that was then. These days, you won’t see Touaregs tackling the Dakar or Polos dominating the World Rally Championship. Audi and Porsche have pulled their hybrid prototypes from Le Mans and the FIA World Endurance Championship. And no VW Group brand is represented in Formula 1, Indy, or (unsurprisingly) NASCAR, either. Audi still competes in Germany’s DTM touring-car series and, as Porsche soon will, also backs a team in Formula E. But that’s about as close as any Volkswagen brands get to a factory racing effort nowadays.
–
The world’s largest automaker hasn’t given up on motorsports, though. It’s just taking a different approach. In fact, the Volkswagen Group produces a stalwart array of competition machinery. But instead of spending millions fielding those machines itself, it has built a business around selling its race and rally cars to customer teams. If you have a big enough budget, you can buy one, too.

Volkswagen

For $ 113,000 plus shipping and taxes, Volkswagen will hook you up with its Golf GTI TCR. The racer is based on the familiar hot hatch but adapted to compete under the cost-conscious TCR regulations embraced by the newly amalgamated FIA World Touring Car Cup and a network of national and regional touring-car series around the world. VW has delivered more than 75 of them since 2015, including seven in the United States since it arrived here last November. T&H Technologies handles distribution for North America.
–

–
Wolfsburg’s motorsports department also recently introduced the Polo GTI R5, a customer rally car that builds on the success of the Polo R WRC that won four back-to-back World Rally Championships from 2013 through 2016. The FIA limits the price of R5 rally cars to the equivalent of $ 220,000. While VW’s Polo GTI R5 has yet to reach the United States, the first five examples have already been delivered to teams in Europe and South America, with a further 10 to follow later this year.

Priced from $ 125,000, the RS3 LMS serves as the point of entry into Audi Sport’s customer-racing lineup. It’s based on Ingostadt’s smallest sedan, modified to compete in the same TCR class as the Golf GTI. Audi also offers two versions of its mid-engined R8 LMS: a GT4 model for $ 250,000, and the GT3 version for $ 450,000. Audi Sport Customer Racing USA has delivered 20 examples of the RS3 LMS, along with a dozen of the R8 LMS in GT4 spec, eight for GT3, and 25 of the previous R8 LMS Ultra.

Porsche

Porsche’s customer-racing department is not only the most prolific in the group but boasts that it’s the world’s largest manufacturer of race cars. Its paddock currently consists of the 911 GT3 Cup and GT3 R. The former will set you back $ 223,000, plus shipping and a $ 25,000 import fee, and is available only to customers competing in one of the 20 one-make championships Porsche runs around the world, or in competitive series, like the Pirelli World Challenge. An impressive 90 examples of the current model have been delivered to date. Anyone can buy a 911 GT3 R, though, for $ 520,000 (plus shipping and a $ 35,000 import fee), and 23 of the latest version have already been delivered. Porsche also previously offered a Clubsport version of the Cayman GT4 for $ 165,000, and may again once the new model is ready.

Lamborghini
–

–
Although historically not as involved in racing as some of its rivals, today Lamborghini offers two racing models, both based on the Huracán supercar. The latest Huracán LP620-4 Super Trofeo Evo forms the backbone of the marque’s spec-racing series in North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Your local Lamborghini dealer will sell you one, regardless of what you intend to do with it, for $ 295,000.
–

–
The rear-drive Huracán GT3 is sold directly by the manufacturer’s Squadra Corse department for $ 505,000 but is only available to teams entering it in recognized series such as the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship or the Pirelli World Challenge. As of last season, Lamborghini customer teams had about 60 Huracán GT3s competing in a dozen such series around the world, including the International GT Open, Blancpain GT Series, and Michelin GT3 Le Mans Cup.
–
Bentley
–

–
Like Lamborghini, Porsche, and Audi, Bentley offers a GT3 racer to customer teams. Approximately 30 examples of the Continental GT3 have been made to date, including two delivered to the States. Bentley is developing a new motorsports model based on the new roadgoing Continental GT, set to make its race debut in April. Once the kinks are ironed out on the track, the first customer cars will begin delivery later this year. In the meantime, the current Continental GT3 is still available from Bentley’s racing partner M-Sport for about $ 518,000 at current exchange rates, with no commitment to racing it required.

–
Of course the Volkswagen Group isn’t the only automaker producing race and rally cars for customer teams. But if you’re in the market for one, with such a wide array on offer, chances are the German group and its various brands will have the equipment you’re looking for.

RABBIT IS RICH by John Updike Penguin, £9.99 My favourite of the Rabbit books because it’s the most fun. For some reason I find stories about ordinary American life romantic. In this he has taken over a car dealership and is making good money. I like the sense of living alongside a character through a series of books and it’s perfectly written.
PORTNOY’S COMPLAINT by Philip Roth Vintage, £8.99 A gateway drug to Roth’s work. It’s an eye-popping account of one man. It’s funny and frank about sex and the fact that it’s a notorious book adds another layer of fun to it.
WHITE TEETH by Zadie Smith Penguin, £8.99 At university I read the minimum to not get thrown off my course because I was busy getting drunk. When I graduated in 2000 everyone was talking about this and it got me into more adult reading habits. It’s about immigrant families in London. Being a modern teenager it felt fresh and exciting.
POLO by Jilly Cooper Corgi, £9.99 I’ve always liked these sorts of books – I don’t want to label them with some snooty term – and am a fan of Jackie Collins as well. I found this really funny and naughty. Because I’d just left Oxford there were suddenly a load of jokes about posh people in it that I understood.
ALIAS GRACE by Margaret Atwood Virago, £9.99 I’ve just finished this. It’s an unusual book. I like her themes such as the dark power of female sexuality, as well as the internal lives of women versus what they present to the outside. This is based on a historical event and it’s a thrilling murder-mystery.
THE SECRET DIARY OF ADRIAN MOLE AGED 13 3/4 by Sue Townsend Puffin, £6.99 One of the funniest books ever. I’ve re-read it about 10 times. Once you look at your teenage years from the other side it’s even more hilarious. The older I get the more subtlety I find. It’s comforting because it’s relatable.

]]>Just 14 years old at the time, she went from the frontlines of competition at the first-ever North American Indigenous Games [NAIG] in Edmonton, to the frontlines of resistance during the Oka Crisis just days later.
“I think to myself, what would people like me have done after the Oka Crisis if I hadn’t had sport? I can tell you what they did and I would have done what a lot of people ended up doing. Self-medicating through other means to deal with my PTSD [Post Traumatic Stress Disorder] in unhealthy ways,” Horn-Miller said.
“Instead, I ended up channeling it through my sporting career.”
A Mohawk from Kahnawake, Que, Horn-Miller was a prolific swimmer and runner at a young age. She knew early on she had the ability to compete at the highest level in sport. That was reaffirmed when she walked into the first NAIG in Edmonton all those years ago.
“It was the only time in my whole career that I looked down the blocks and it was all Native people, people who looked like me. And that was special to me.”
And while that first international event was inspiring and empowering for so many reasons, Horn-Miller got a rude awakening less than a week from returning home from Edmonton.
In the summer of 1990 the town of Oka, Que., planned to expand a golf course without consultation onto a piece of land the locals call The Pines. The land is sacred to the Mohawk, who were opposed to the expansion because it is where their people are buried.
Horn-Miller was tasked with cooking midnight meals and breakfast to take to the warriors who were in the bunkers. Seventy eight days later, the stand-off ended at the Kanesatake Treatment Centre. It’s also the day Horn-Miller was stabbed in the chest by a soldier’s bayonet while carrying her four-year-old sister, Keniehtiio Horn, to safety.
“I don’t really remember it as one continuous memory,” Horn-Miller said. “I remember what I felt like. I felt like my mind, spirit, soul, body was going to explode. There was so much rage, fear and sadness.”
The doctor who treated Horn-Miller said had the bayonet been a centimetre either way it would have gone into her heart and she wouldn’t have survived.

The trauma from that event haunted Horn-Miller through her teens but the one thing keeping her motivated were sports. She excelled at water polo and her mother knew it.
“She put her life on hold,” Horn-Miller recalls. “I remember we moved from the reserve to Ottawa and we had a two-bedroom apartment there. She rented out both bedrooms and we slept on the couch. With that extra money she bought us a membership at the Y.”
Horn-Miller’s work with the National Inquiry into missing and murdered indigenous women and girls is deeply personal. (David Zalubowski/The Associated Press)
Horn-Miller was honing her skills at NAIG competitions throughout the 90s as both an athlete and a coach. Then in the summer of 2000, 10 years after Oka, Horn-Miller walked into the Olympic opening ceremony as co-captain of Team Canada’s water polo team.
“I knew I was being watched by my nieces and nephews and so many other people who were younger than me,” Horn-Miller said.
“And my little sister, I love her so much, she was one of the reasons why I never succumbed to those really dark moments in my teens when I was struggling. If I gave up and quit and gave in, I was showing her show to give up and give in. And I loved her too much that I wanted to show them how to persevere.”
Horn-Miller is now a part of the National Inquiry into missing and murdered indigenous women and girls, as the director of community engagement. She says this work is so deeply personal. And while Horn-Miller hears stories of tragedy she reflects on her life and what sport has meant to overcome pain.
“Sport in Indigenous communities is not a past time, it’s not something you do on the side to teach co-ordination,” she said. “It saves people’s lives and gives people focus and teaches people stress management skills. That’s what sport was for me, how I dealt with stress.”
That’s why Horn-Miller understands why the Games in Toronto could have a profound impact not just for Indigenous youth across Turtle Island, but for Canadians in general.
“When I hear stories, and situations for our women and girls I think what if we had sport co-ordinated in an accessible way. It would mean youth had other ways to get their stress out.”
More than anything, Horn-Miller describes the Games as a feeling of “coming home.” She says every time she competed or coached at NAIG she renewed her spirit and purpose. Now, she can’t emphasize enough the role the North American Indigenous Games in Toronto can play in healing a broken past. Horn-Miller said it starts with the athlete’s performing to their great abilities.
“We need that right now. We need all of them to be their most powerful, positive and beautiful,” Horn-Miller said.
“Not only do we need to show Canadians but each other and those kids looking up to them too. The only way the younger generation will believe they can do this is if you show them you’re doing it.”

The small Volkswagen Polo, introduced in 1975 to accompany the Golf that had debuted a year earlier, remains a vehicle of global importance for Wolfsburg, having shifted over 14 million units over its life span. But it’s never been exported to the United States. Volkswagen has just unveiled the sixth generation of its successful supermini, and no, Jeff, it’s not coming to America.
–
Now based on the compact version of Volkswagen Group’s ubiquitous MQB platform (MQB A0), the new Polo features a 3.7-inch wheelbase stretch over the outgoing car. The car offers more passenger room and cargo space (12.4 cubic feet) than the slightly smaller previous model, not to mention the fourth-generation Golf of twenty years ago—a car that is four inches longer than this new Polo. It’s handsome, too, offering a more pugnacious, slit-eyed take on the still attractive seventh-generation Golf aesthetic. Quoth VW: “The sixth-generation Polo has become a masculine car, which generates charisma from all perspectives.” We could come up with a lame kicker here, but trust that you’ll have more fun just reading the preceding sentence out loud to yourself in your best Arte Johnson German accent.

Available powertrains include a range of six gasoline engines displacing 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 liters with outputs ranging from 64 to 197 horsepower. The two lowest-output mills are available only with a five-speed manual transmission, while the 69-hp 1.0L offers a choice of a five-speed stick or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The three hottest mills offer either a six-speed manual or the seven-speed dual-clutch. Diesel options include a 79-hp/five-speed manual combo or a 94-horse unit backed by either a five-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch. Both diesel engines displace 1.6 liters. For the first time in a Polo, VW is offering a turbocharged 1.0-liter that burns natural gas. The 89-hp unit is available only with a five-speed manual transmission.
–
The new Polo is offered in five trim levels: basic Trendline; slightly nicer Comfortline; fancier Highline (a leather-wrapped shifter!); the Dr. Dre-approved Beats (featuring a 300-watt sound system); and, of course, the Polo GTI, which boasts the 197-hp 2.0-liter engine, the all-important horizontal red grille stripe, and, crucially, plaid seats,. The new Polo is available in 14 exterior colors, 13 dash-pad colors, 11 different seat colors, and with a total of 12 wheel designs, ranging from the base 14-inch diameter units all the way up to the GTI’s optional 18-inchers. Other options include wireless inductive phone charging, full-LED headlamps, adaptive Sport Select suspension, and the Air Care Climatronic HVAC system, featuring an air-quality sensor and allergen filter.

The Polo’s driver-assistance suite includes standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian monitoring, as well as optional features such as blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, semi-automated parking assistance, keyless entry, and adaptive cruise control with stop/start functionality. The responsibility of keeping the driver informed falls to VW’s new-generation Active Info digital dash display; the Polo is the first VW Group vehicle to feature this iteration of it. Infotainment systems come in both 6.5-inch and 8.0-inch varieties.
–
Volkswagen’s also using the launch of the new Polo to trot out We by Volkswagen, which it calls “a digital user platform from Volkswagen for all drivers.” So far, you can use it to pay for parking in Berlin, or at least you’ll be able to by the time the car goes on sale later this year, starting at just €12,975 in Germany. That’d be about $ 14,500 in the U.S., but the only way Americans can pay for a Polo is to rent one while traveling overseas. We’re seeing ads at $ 48/day if you pick it up at the Berlin airport.

You can’t beat the game of kings
As regular S Magazine readers may know, I’m a lover of all things equestrian. So when I was given the chance to pick up a mallet and try my hand at a few chukkas of polo, I jumped at the opportunity.
Polo is the oldest recorded team sport in the world and can be traced back in ancient Persia to about 600BC. At that stage it was played by the military and noblemen, but the high-octane game we play today originated in a northeastern state of India in the 19th century.
It is now popular all over the world and is generally considered an elite sport among the super-rich. But, as I discovered, it’s much more accessible than people may think. What is more, you don’t need to be a pro to last a chukka – a seven-and-a-half minute period of play, for novices like me.
My tutor for the day was recently appointed Land Rover ambassador and rising star of polo Max Charlton. At just 26, Max is already one of only three British polo horsemen playing off a handicap of seven goals. He is a well-established member of the England squad and has played in most of the world’s major tournaments.
Max was born and raised in Windsor but, unusually, was not from a polo or horsey background. “I was introduced to polo by an architect, who was working on my parents’ house, when I was 12 years old,” Max tells me. “I had been riding and was involved in The Pony Club activities, but from my first experience on the polo pitch I was hooked.”
Berkshire was the perfect place for a polo-mad teenager, as there are several clubs in the area, including the renowned Guards, for which Max plays today.
Set in the grounds of Windsor Great Park, Guards Polo Club was founded in 1955 and is now the largest such organisation in Europe.
It is also where I am going to make my polo debut. The hallowed emerald-green pitch I am going to be riding across is called The Queen’s Ground and has been graced by many of the polo world’s great and good, including Prince Charles, Prince William and Prince Harry. And, I’m told, the Queen has regularly been an observer from the sidelines. No pressure then.
S MAG
Keen equestrian Vicky (left) is game for polo
Even with such a prestigious guest list, Max insists polo is not reserved for the upper classes and the super-rich. “It’s becoming ever more popular and it is more accessible than most people think,” he says.
“A lesson costs about £75, which is around the same price as a golf lesson, and you don’t need your own horse to enjoy the game as the clubs provide them. If you find you really enjoy it, you can join a low goal club and play in a team.”
During a professional polo match, a player will ride several horses, as the game is so intense and fast. So unlike some equestrian sports, the game relies less on a one-to-one partnership between horse and rider and more on overall skill and general horsemanship.
“I try not to get too attached to one particular horse,” says Max, “although I’m very sentimental about a little mare called Pixie. She broke her leg and it was thought she’d never play again, but after several operations she’s back on the pitch.
“The English polo summer season runs from May to September,” he adds. “But in the winter I travel abroad to play.”
New Zealand, Australia, Argentina and Barbados are among the countries Max has played, and he says that while it may sound glamorous, it can be hard being away from home for long periods.
Before I am given a mount, Max introduces me to a wooden horse for some stick-and-ball practice, designed to help me get my eye in and co-ordinate my swing.

Max Charlton
The ball is rolled towards me and I am asked to hit it with the side of the mallet in a smooth swinging arc. It’s more difficult than it looks, and bearing in mind I am perched on an immobile wooden frame, I’m beginning to wonder if I’ve bitten off more than I can chew.
Surprisingly, Max soon thinks I’m ready to proceed and introduces me to my pony (polo mounts are always called ponies despite their size – never call them horses). My ride for today is Lucia, a 12-year-old mare and polo veteran. Even though I’ve ridden horses for years this is something completely new. Polo ponies are very sensitive, unfailingly obedient, and are trained to accelerate at speed, spin on a sixpence and stop on a dime. Their direction is controlled through contact on the neck. This is called neck reining.
Max shows me how to hold the reins in one hand and how to correctly carry my mallet. At first it all feels very clumsy and I manage to inflict what turns out to be a cracking bruise on my shin with my own stick. But I love the feeling of my horse’s speed and agility under the saddle and it’s not long before I’m galloping end to end, with Max tirelessly delivering the ball back to me.
He is such a skilled and understated horseman he makes it look effortless. Easy it is not. I miss shot after shot but finally I see a chance and Lucia surges forward, she has seen the ball, too, and has locked on to it. Her ears are pinned flat back against her head and her hooves thunder beneath her as we charge towards the ball.
I swing, make contact and hear the satisfying noise of mallet against ball – it’s such a sweet sound and to my amazement the ball travels half the length of the pitch and through the goalposts. This is definitely more luck than judgment, but it feels amazing. It’s such an exhilarating experience and I don’t want to stop, despite the fact I know my muscles will be aching later.
After my lesson, I get to see how it’s really done and take my place on the sidelines to watch the Land Rover Duke of Cornwall Final, where Max and his team mates play an exhilarating match. Thanks to my morning in the saddle I’m able to follow the action. It may have something to do with my earlier adrenaline rush, the perfect summer afternoon or the glass of champagne I have in my hand, but I’m truly hooked now.
Max Charlton is one of Britain’s leading polo players and a Land Rover ambassador. Land Rover has been at the heart of equestrian sport for more than 30 years. To find out more, visit landrover.co.uk.
