The modern stove probably doesn't make you think about protecting forests. A group backed by the United Nations wants to change that in hopes of unlocking billions of dollars in funding for a little-known climate solution.
Some 2.4 billion people in the developing world lack access to "clean cooking," instead preparing food on wood and charcoal fire pits or inefficient kerosene stoves. The carbon-dioxide emissions are on par with the entire airline industry — about 2% of the global total — and exposure to soot shaves years off the lives of those who cook, who are often women and children.
There is also a cost to nature: More than one-third of the wood harvested for fuel isn't replenished, which contributes to forest degradation and threatens growing investment in nature-based climate solutions, according to a report out this week from the Clean Cooking Alliance.
"Lack of access to clean cooking is the most underinvested health and environmental problem in the world," Jillene Connors Belopolsky, the alliance's chief of staff and chief external-affairs officer, said. "It's historically been viewed as a women's issue."
The alliance works to spur adoption of stoves that meet international standards for indoor air quality, including those that use liquefied petroleum gas, biogas or ethanol. Electric stoves and pressure cookers also make the list.
Even though liquefied petroleum gas is a fossil fuel, it pollutes less than wood and coal and is the most cost-effective solution in sub-Saharan Africa, where the vast majority of households lack access to clean cooking and electricity, Belopolsky said. Farming communities also offer an opportunity in the region because animal and crop waste can be converted into biogas and ethanol.
But scaling clean cooking is hamstrung by a lack of financing from wealthier countries and the private sector, similar to most climate efforts in the "global south," which faces the direst impacts of global warming but has contributed the least to the crisis. Investment has hovered around $ 130 million annually, well below the $ 4.5 billion needed, according to estimates.
Connecting clean cooking to nature could unlock more funding. About $ 133 billion flows into forest protection and restoration, sustainable land management, and other nature-based projects, with calls to triple that sum this decade. If a fraction of that was funneled into clean cooking, it could make a big impact, Belopolsky said.
The Clean Cooking Alliance has advised more developing countries to put clean cooking in their climate-action plans and says investors and corporations should consider how the transition to cleaner cooking can make their investments less risky.
"You can't tell people they can't use the natural resources around them to feed their families without providing an affordable alternative," Belopolsky said. "If we invest billions of dollars to protect or restore forests or implement regenerative agricultural practices, but communities that live around those projects don't have access to clean cooking and are collecting wood, that's counterproductive and a risk to that investment."
There are signs the message is resonating. Between 2017 and 2020, the revenue that clean-cooking companies made from selling carbon offsets grew by 21 times. In 2020, Switzerland and Peru were the first countries to strike a carbon-offset deal under the framework of the Paris climate accord, which included clean-cooking projects. Switzerland provided the finance and eventually plans to count the emissions reductions toward its climate goals.

Polluters likely had a good year in 2018. According to numbers from advocacy group Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER), the number of criminal pollution cases that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) referred to the Department of Justice for potential prosecution was lower in 2018 than it had been in 30 years.
That’s probably not because industry in America is becoming more environmentally conscious. PEER suggests the reason for the low number of referrals is that the EPA is only employing between 130 and 140 special agents in the agency’s Criminal Investigation Division, less than the minimum 200 agents specified by the US Pollution Prevention Act of 1990.
The EPA only referred 166 cases to the Justice Department in 2018. According to numbers from the Associated Press, referrals peaked in 1998, with 592 cases referred for prosecution. Throughout the George W. Bush presidency, referrals ranged somewhere between 300 and 450. Referrals dipped during the Obama presidency to a range between 200 and just over 400. Referrals have been on a downward trend since 2012.

Meeting climate targets set in Paris in 2015 would significantly reduce air pollution, a World Health Organization report released at the climate change summit in Poland says.

There’s little doubt that air quality has generally improved in the US in recent decades, but quantifying that improvement has been difficult. However, a recently published University of North Carolina study might have produced a more tangible figure. The NASA- and EPA-backed report determined that American deaths from air pollution dropped by 47 percent between 1990 and 2010 to 71,000 per year. The researchers achieved the figures by measuring the levels of two pollutants (ozone and PM2.5) in a 21-year computer simulation and comparing that to CDC data for related causes of death in given regions, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and ischemic heart disease.
The researchers primarily attributed the reduced deaths to tougher federal regulations over the period, particularly the Clean Air Act and the 2002 NOx State Implementations Call. They also singled out rules specifically targeting vehicle emissions. These policy changes had enough impact to overcome surges in population, electricity demand and commute lengths, the researchers said.
The team suggested that further improvements, such as the 2011 Cross-State Air Pollution Rule, have likely contributed to further improvements since 2010. They intended to study pollution-related deaths since 2010 using other forms of data.
Whether or not pollution levels keep falling is another story. The researchers are concerned the current US government’s anti-science stance and deregulatory policies may slow or even reverse progress on air quality. At the same time, technology isn’t standing still. Increased adoption of clean energy, electric cars and hybrid vehicles could help, as could reduced car ownership.

President Donald Trump’s administration on Tuesday released its new plan to regulate carbon emissions from coal-fired power plants.
Trump’s Affordable Clean Energy plan includes far less stringent regulations than the Clean Power Plan, which former President Barack Obama’s administration proposed in 2015. The new rules would allow states to write their own regulations for coal-fired power plants, whereas the Obama-era plan (which never went into effect) sought to shift electricity production to less carbon-intensive sources.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

The 92-year-old said in a new, short online film: “We hoped that Blue Planet II would open people’s eyes to the damage that we are doing to our oceans and the creatures that live in them.
“I’ve been absolutely astonished at the result that that programme has had. I never imagined there would be quite so many of you who would be inspired to want change.”
He praised families who have “changed their habits”, people who have been litter-picking on beaches, and the schools and communities which have “searched for ways to reduce their single-use plastic footprint”.
And the naturalist said: “What is more, the strength of your response has not gone unnoticed in the corridors of power, or in business boardrooms”, adding that “even as far away as China, change is happening”.
His comments came as the BBC announced more programmes and online – Plastics Action – for people to select one or more of five “small changes” to reduce their plastic footprint.
Sir David said: “Right now, eight million tonnes of plastics ends up in the oceans every year.
“But you, by your responses, have shown that, if we start doing those small steps that are easily achievable, we can before long really have an effect.
“The actions of just one of us may seem to be trivial and to have no effect.
“But the knowledge that there are thousands, hundreds of thousands of people who are doing the same thing – that really does have an effect – so please join us.”
BBC One programmes will include War On Plastics, presented by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, who will “experience first-hand the devastation that plastic waste is having on our planet, while continuing to challenge the most environmentally unfriendly businesses”.
Drowning In Plastic, a 90-minute special presented by Liz Bonnin, will “reveal the full scale of the world’s plastic problem and its impact on wildlife, exploring ways in which science can offer a solution”.
Short video diaries online, to accompany the series, show young birds with stomachs full of plastic.
And Stacey Dooley will present The Truth About What You Wear, on the damage to the environment and wildlife caused by the clothes industry.
Online, Plastics Watch will help people reduce plastic pollution and showcase BBC content on the issue.
Blue Planet 2 was the most-watched TV programme of 2017, reaching 37.6 million viewers in the UK, the BBC said.
Director-General Tony Hall said: “From today, Plastics Watch will reflect the changes happening around the UK and wider world, bringing together the bigger picture to inform, inspire and enable the public to make meaningful choices around their use of plastic.”

Buried beneath the snow on Greenland’s surface, ancient layers of ice hold deposits of lead that originated at mines and foundries in ancient Rome. Fluctuations in the amount of ancient lead pollution that reached Greenland turn out to be a remarkably accurate way to trace the economic impact of wars, plagues, and imperial expansion in Classical Europe.
Lead might seem unexciting, but the classical world’s economy ran on it. “The Romans made extensive use of lead for water pipes and other elements of plumbing, weights, soldering clamps between ashlar blocks or columns in architectural construction, sheathing the hulls of some ships, etc.,” classical archaeologist Andrew Wilson of the University of Oxford told Ars.
In a much more direct way, the economy ran on silver: Roman currency was minted in silver coins called denarii. When smelting silver, adding lead to the crushed ore helps concentrate the silver. High-temperature smelting at around 1,200ºC, along with the process of separating lead from silver after the fact, released a lot of lead into the air over Southern Europe during Roman times.
